‘Saturday Night Live’: Billie Eilish & Paul Rudd to Host Final Two Episodes of 2021

Billie Eilish and Paul Rudd will be the final two hosts for Saturday Night Live in 2021.

This will be Eilish’s first time hosting the comedy-sketch show and second time appearing as the musical guest, pulling “double duty”. Eilish’s hosting debut will occur December 11. Eilish joins a group containing Britney Spears, Harry Styles, and Nick Jonas (and more) as the few artists who have hosted and performed as the musical guest on the same night. Eilish will also continue the string of first-time hosts for Saturday Night Live this season: Owen Wilson, Kim Kardashian West, Rami Malek, Jason Sudeikis, Kieran Culkin, and Jonathan Majors were all tapped as first-time hosts this season, as well.

People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” Paul Rudd will host Saturday Night Live for the fifth time on December 18. Joining Rudd as the musical cast is Charli XCX, who will also be performing for the second time on the SNL stage. Rudd will join the coveted “Five-Timers Club” following hosting in 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2019.

Past episodes of Saturday Night Live are available to stream on Peacock.

‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’: Natasha Liu Bordizzo Cast as Sabine Wren for Disney+ Series

The Star Wars: Ahsoka series has added another Mandalorian to the mix: Star Wars Rebels’ Sabine Wren. Natasha Liu Bordizzo (The Society) will bring the animated character to life, marking Sabine’s live-action debut.

Debuting in Star Wars Rebels, Sabine is an art-loving weapons expert from Clan Wren. During Rebels, Sabine comes into possession of the Darksaber before ultimately relinquishing the blade to Bo-Katan Kryze. Kryze, as Star Wars fans will note, somehow lost the Darksaber to Moff Gideon prior to the events in Disney+’s hit series The Mandalorian. We last saw Sabine looking for Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn alongside Ahsoka Tano in the series finale of Rebels following their disappearance. Ahsoka made it clear in Season 2 of The Mandalorian that she is still searching for the pair. Ahsoka is brought to live-action by Rosario Dawson.

This news follows the confirmation that Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker for the Ahsoka series in October. While plot details are still unknown for the series, it will take place during the same timeline as The Mandalorian and with the growing cast list, there appears to be plenty of Rebels reunions in store.

Star Wars: Ahsoka has yet to receive a release date but will air exclusively on Disney+.

Peter Dinklage and the Actors Fund To Be Honored at the Gotham Awards

0

Actor Peter Dinklage will receive a Performer Tribute and The Actors Fund will receive the Gotham Impact Salute during the 2021 Gotham Awards Ceremony. A full list of nominees can be found here. The ceremony is taking place live and in person on Monday, November 29, 2021 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

The Gotham Film & Media Institute event unofficially begins the movie awards show season that will eventually conclude with the Oscars on March 27.

Dinklage is in great company: Kristen Stewart (Spencer, Happiest Season) is also a Performer Award nominee this year. Other tribute nominees include Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), who is receiving the Directors Tribute, Eamonn Bowles (Splinter, Jiro Dreams of Sushi), who is receiving the Industry Tribute, and the cast of Netflix’s The Harder They Fall who are getting the Ensemble Tribute.

A much-beloved actor, Dinklage has been a constant in Hollywood for many years. He gained his first accolade as a leading man in the 2003 movie The Station Agent. The film brought him Screen Actors Guild and Independent Spirit Award nominations, among others. One of his most memorable roles, however, is that of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. He starred in the series from its premiere in 2011 right through to its finale in 2019. During that time, he won four Emmy Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award, among other tributes. Dinklage also won a Screen Actors Guild Award with the ensemble cast of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Most recently, Dinklage has starred in Cyrano. The film is based on a play by Erica Schmidt, which Dinklage also starred in, and has received rave reviews. The movie releases on December 21, 2021, after initially premiering at the 48th Telluride Film Festival back in September. His other famed works include Reed Morano’s I Think We’re Alone Now opposite Elle Fanning, which he also produced and which won the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival; the all-star X-Men: Days of Future PastAvengers: Infinity War; Mark Palansky’s Rememory, with Anton Yelchin, and many more.

Dinklage’s extensive theater credits include A Month in the Country, for the Classic Stage Company; Things We Want, with The New Group, for which he received a Drama League Award nomination; the world premiere of Knickerbocker, at the Williamstown Theatre Festival; and the title roles in Richard IIIUncle Vanya, and Cyrano.

Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, said:

“The roots of Peter Dinklage’s extraordinary career are firmly grounded in independent film. As his work has grown in major features and TV shows to reach audiences everywhere, Peter has remained a steadfast supporter of this community of independent artists, bringing so many iconic characters to life through his powerful, captivating, and often hilarious performances. Cyrano puts Peter’s full range as an actor on display. We are thrilled to recognize this most treasured performer who has won the hearts of audiences across the world as part of this year’s celebration.”

The Actors Fund will also be honored at The Gotham Awards for its work providing leadership, resources, and financial support during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly during the lockdown in 2020 in which much of the New York industry shuttered.

Since the pandemic began the fund has provided more than $23.9 million in assistance to more than 17,100 people in need. The Fund serves everyone in film, theater, television, music, opera, radio, and dance with programs including social services and emergency financial assistance, health care and insurance counseling, housing, and secondary employment and training services.

Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, stated:

“There are few organizations in our industry that   play such a pivotal role in lifting up and supporting so many performing arts and entertainment professionals by offering a wide array of essential services while addressing a variety of challenges faced by workers of all backgrounds. We are honored to recognize their incredible work supporting the many people who keep us entertained.”

Interview: Marcus Rutherford and Josha Stradowski Discuss Bringing ‘The Wheel of Time’ to Life [EXCLUSIVE]

The Wheel of Time turns, Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.” And so it is now, with more than thirty years passed since Robert Jordan’s fantasy epic began with The Eye of the World that we now get our very own live-action version of The Wheel of Time. Nerdy children of the nineties rejoice!

For those unfamiliar with the fourteen book saga, The Wheel of Time series follows a group of friends from a small village called The Two Rivers as they get swept up into an epic adventure (that includes magic, Aes Sedai witches, and monsters), and learn that the fate of the entire world is entwined with their own.

We were lucky enough to have a moment to chat with two of our young heroes – Marcus Rutherford (who plays Perrin Aybara) and Josha Stradowski (who plays Rand Al’Thor). We spoke about cast bonding, filming during a pandemic, and familiarizing themselves with a lesser-known fanstasy epic.

Nerds and Beyond: Hi! I was curious, since your core group is playing childhood best friends, – you know, small town, known each other since you were babies and the like – what was the cast bonding like? Did it begin right after you were cast or while you were on set? And was it made challenging at all because of pandemic requirements?

Marcus Rutherford: Yeah, I think at the start, we were kind of, you know, we all had to relocate to Prague for like, ten months initially, and we got put into these sort of training camps to do horse riding and stonework and swordfighting. So, we were having all these new experiences together, and were kind of forming bonds. But then yeah… to be on a show that kind of stops and starts, and you have this global pandemic hit us on our first season. Yeah, you kind of become stronger and realize in that moment that this thing’s bigger than a TV show. And that when everyone’s okay we’ll come back to it. But you realize that most people definitely still want to escape and have real, magical worlds to escape into and so on. It’s been amazing to share this with the world.

Nerds and Beyond: So fantasy language can get very complex. And Wheel of Time’s vocabulary is particularly complicated. And there is a glossary at the back of the books, but I was wondering what the show’s approach to that language was, and what you guys did to help familiarize yourselves with it. And if there were tricks to help make it feel more natural?

Josha Stradowski: Well I guess, you know, as these characters go out into the world, the audience is being introduced to all of these times and all of these places, but the characters are as well. So that’s the same, you know, because they grew up in the Two Rivers and they’re quite unfamiliar. It’s really unknown territory for them as it is for the audience. So I think as the characters are finding new cultures and new worlds, and like you said, new languages and things, it probably will seem quite overwhelming. But I think that kind of matches how it feels in the books. Everything’s new in that and it will be quite similar when you’re watching the show.

And I think that’s how it is, that this world is so expansive, new things are coming in. And this season is basically about establishing as much as possible, really. All the new languages and cultures and people that you come across. So I think it’s really exciting.

The Wheel of Time hits streaming on November 19 on Amazon Prime.

Interview: Zoë Robins and Madeleine Madden Discuss the Importance of Gender Dynamics in ‘The Wheel of Time’ [EXCLUSIVE]

We were lucky enough to have a moment to chat with two of our young heroines – Zoë Robins (who plays Nynaeve al’Meara) and Madeleine Madden (who plays Egwene Al’Vere). We spoke about the current popularity of the fantasy genre and what sets The Wheel of Time apart from it’s more familiar counterparts.

Nerds and Beyond: I was curious, because we’re in a period that has a new wealth of fantasy in movies and television. It’s popular again. And I was curious, what do you think the quality is in The Wheel of Time, and its world, that makes it special and unique? What helps set it apart from other more established franchises like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones?

Zoë Robins: I think what makes Wheel of Time stand out is the way it deals with things like gender dynamics and themes of balance. I think that’s something that we haven’t seen before on screen. And in fantasy, at least not so detailed. I think what’s been a pleasure to work with in The Wheel of Time world, are these women that are in power and it’s not a big deal, you know what I mean? It’s accepted, and it is what it is, and rightly so. And that’s been lovely to be a part of as an actor, and behind the scenes too.

Madeleine Madden: Absolutely. It’s not a radical idea that women can be what they want and who they want to be, and love who they want. It’s just the way the world is. And women championing each other, and I think really helping each other see what their true potential is. I think that’s what really makes it a standalone in this genre.

The Wheel of Time hits streaming on November 19 on Amazon Prime.

J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Launches Podcast Division, Signs Exclusive First-Look Deal With Spotify

0

J. J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is rolling out a new division: Bad Robot Audio. The new entity will produce and develop original scripted and non-scripted audio content. Bad Robot Audio is launching in exclusive partnership with Spotify. It will be led by former Audible and Spotify Emmy-nominated Audio and Digital Executive, Christina Choi. Bad Robot’s President and COO, Brian Weinstein made the announcement.

Bad Robot has enjoyed global creative and commercial success across film and television thanks to great storytelling and worldbuilding. Its exclusive, multi-year partnership with Spotify will open up new ways to tell stories through audio, with both narrative non-fiction and fiction podcast productions.

Filmmaker J.J. Abrams formed Bad Robot in 2001. The company has produced television series such as Alias, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest, Westworld, Lovecraft Country, and Lisey’s Story; films such as Super 8, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker, the Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and Cloverfield franchises; and also interactive content including the mobile app Action Movie FX. Bad Robot’s first foray into publishing, S., a novel conceived by Abrams and written by Doug Dorst, was a New York Times Best Seller.

Discussing the announcement, Abrams said:

“Podcasts have obviously become a go-to destination for entertainment, education and discovery. Given Bad Robot’s work in TV, film, games and music, podcasts was an obvious topic of conversation within the company for a long time. We are thrilled to welcome Christina Choi to lead the way, and to collaborate with Dawn and the incredible Spotify team to bring some incredible stories to life.”

Dawn Ostroff, Chief Content and Advertising Business Officer at Spotify, also welcomed Abrams and the Bad Robot team.

“We’re incredibly honored to welcome visionary J.J. Abrams and his renowned Bad Robot productions into the Spotify family. Bad Robot productions have produced some of the world’s most riveting and award-winning content and we cannot wait to see how their imaginative stories transcend into the audio space”

Bad Robot Audio joins two other Bad Robot entities. Loud Robot, an artist-friendly independent music label, launched in 2018; and Bad Robot Games, a newer entity, develops large and indie-scale original games for mobile, PC, and console.

‘Supernatural’: 15 Underrated Episodes

Today marks one year since the end of Supernatural; though with 15 seasons there’s a myriad of different ways to experience the show all over again. You could do a full re-watch of every season for the umpteenth time, or you could pick and choose your favorite episodes to provide yourself some of that sweet serotonin.

If you’re like me, you could revisit one episode from each season that you feel deserved more love. Like all shows, Supernatural has its ups and downs, and some episodes are definitely better received than others; but there’s something strangely cathartic about giving a second chance to those few “undesirables.”

Here’s a list of 15 underrated Supernatural episodes.

Season 1

1.03 – “Dead In the Water

This episode provided us with our first-ever glimpse of Dean interacting with kids, and for that, I’m eternally grateful. Though it was early in the show’s run, it always stuck out as being particularly unique, because the resolution to the episode had nothing really to do with the Winchester brothers. They fought exactly how they knew to fight, but in the end what stopped the belligerent spirit was the Sheriff’s sacrifice. Another bonus: you have the stellar directing of the late Kim Manners.

Notable quote: “Must be hard with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pick-up line.” -Andrea Barr

Season 2

2.04 – “Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things

WB/The CW

Supernatural’s sophomore season dealt heavily with the duality of life vs. death, beginning with John Winchester’s sacrifice to save a dying Dean, and continuing throughout with the question of what exactly was happening to Sam. Dean carried the weight of the secret whispered to him by his father: would he need to kill his own brother? And though this episode might not progress the larger plot forward, it shows how morality can be twisted when a loved one is killed — something the Winchester boys deal with at length in later seasons.

Notable quote: “What’s dead should stay dead.” -Dean

Season 3

3.14 – “Long Distance Call

WB/The CW

The writer’s strike resulted in a shortened season for us viewers. However, it still features some top tier episodes, including fan favorites “A Very Supernatural Christmas,” “Bad Day At Black Rock,” and “Mystery Spot.” But one episode that’s often overlooked is “Long Distance Call,” with the boys hunting something pretending to be the deceased loved ones of its intended victims. It’s an emotional ride, showcasing a strong performance from Jensen Ackles as Dean, struggling with his own phone call from their father. Admittedly though, I’m a little biased in this pick, because I appreciate that Sam got to take down the monster-of-the-week for once.

Notable quote: “Do you want a poem?” -Sam

Season 4

4.04 – “Metamorphosis

WB/The CW

Season four is a hell of a ride. It introduces angels into the mix, and Sam and Dean are pitted against each other for a majority of it. In “Metamorphosis,” the boys are trying desperately to stop a suburban dad from transforming fully into a rugaru. It details more of the conflict of how to handle something not quite human, yet not quite monster. And it’s also apparently the first episode where Castiel is called “Cas,” so that’s neat.

Notable quote: “It doesn’t matter what you are, it only matters what you do. It’s your choice.” -Sam

Season 5

5.05 – “Fallen Idols”

WB/The CW

Okay, hear me out. Is it campy? Yes. Is it a little absurd? Also yes. But is it a great time? Definitely. Paris Hilton guest starring isn’t something I ever would’ve considered in a series like Supernatural, yet it works. Fighting a god masquerading as famous dead icons — and the still very alive Paris Hilton — is something only this show can pull off. This episode has the added benefit of being a nice little bit of fluff following the heavier four that preceded it.

Notable quote: “Four score and seven years ago, I had a funny hat.” -Dean

Season 6

6.05 – “Live Free Or Twihard”

WB/The CW

This originally aired during peak vampire-mania; everything was becoming Twilight, up to and including Supernatural. The Winchesters track down a vampire preying on young female fans of an indeterminate yet obvious nod to Twilight, titled “My Summer of Blood.” Dean gets bitten, and it’s then that we learn Sam is very much not okay. I still remember the sinking feeling in my gut while watching live and seeing that slow, detached smile.

Notable quote: “Newsflash wizard, vampires pee too.” -Dean

Season 7

7.16 – “Out With the Old”

WB/The CW

Sam and Dean work to track down some cursed objects, while also dealing with the Leviathans. The episode’s premise isn’t incredibly complex, but cursed objects are always an interesting plot device — because they could be literally anything. Also, watching two grown men try to tackle a little girl in ballet slippers is unintentionally hilarious, but maybe that’s just me.

Notable quote: “If you dig down deep, it’s all Dick.” -Frank Devereaux

Season 8

8.08 – “Hunteri Heroici”

WB/The CW

Castiel wants to hunt! It’s very endearing that he’s trying to be like the Winchesters, because he could just as easily flit off anywhere and leave them in the dust. But he chooses to cut himself off from heaven before trying his hand at hunting, of all things. And his first hunt is this wacky episode featuring death by cartoon gags. It’s one of the episodes you can just put on, turn off your brain, and enjoy. However, if you hate cartoon-like violence and excessive use of zany sound effects, it might not be for you. But even with that in mind, give it a shot. It could surprise you.

Notable quote: [interrogating a cat] “I’ve almost cracked him.” -Castiel

Season 9

9.08 – “Rock and a Hard Place”

WB/The CW

This is the second entry on this list that features a guest star who’d previously worked with Jared Padalecki in a horror film — the first being Paris Hilton from House of Wax. In this episode, Lindy Booth (Cry Wolf) plays Bonnie, who the boys encounter while aiding Jody Mills in a hunt at a Church chastity group. Also in the episode is James Kirk, who played a young Ben in Dark Angel, while Jensen Ackles played the adult version of Ben (As well as his twin brother Alec). It’s a Ben reunion! A Beunion!

Notable quote: “Too many things are things.” -Sam

Season 10

10.06 – “Ask Jeeves”

WB/The CW

This is essentially Supernatural‘s version of Clue; as the Winchesters discover a voicemail on Bobby’s phone leading them to a supposed inheritance. With the boys technically being Bobby’s next of kin, they head to the house in search of answers, and instead encounter a magnificent cast of characters. The guest stars in this episode, combined with the A+ dialogue, make it an incredibly fun watch. Not to mention the numerous references to the aforementioned board game. See if you can spot them all.

Notable quote: “Ugh. Homosexual murderers. Like Leopold and Loeb.” -Heddy

Season 11

11.19 – “The Chitters”

WB/The CW

This episode deserved to be a spinoff. Yes, I said it. Cesar and Jesse Cuevas should have their own show. I’d watch that married couple build their farming business for an entire five-season run. Beyond my love of the two of them, this episode also features a glimpse into a potential non-hunting future for either of the Winchester brothers. It’d previously seemed unheard of to believe that anyone could escape “the life,” but Jesse and Cesar managed it, and it could have given the brothers hope for the same someday.

Notable quote: “Sleeping is the new smoking.” -Dean

Season 12

12.20 – “Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes”

WB/The CW

Sam and Dean are helping Tasha and her twin brother Max search for their mother, who’s gone missing while hunting a powerful witch. Witchcraft featured in the series has always felt unsightly, with grotesque imagery, such as someone’s teeth falling out, or vomiting up their insides. This episode harkens back to days of witches’ past, complete with that unsettling feeling it leaves in your stomach. And the idea of an un-killable twig doll is the thing of nightmares, just saying.

Notable quote: “We do terrible things all the time to save each other. I mean, that’s what you do for family. Who am I to stop him?” -Dean

Season 13

13.18 – “Bring ’em Back Alive

WB/The CW

The introduction of the multiverse might seem too far-fetched for some, but I appreciate that it at least gave us an opportunity to revisit characters long since passed. Like Charlie, for instance. Though it isn’t quite the same, the alterna-Charlie is still very much welcome if it means more of Felicia Day. This is a good one, featuring the return of Felicia, as mentioned, but also another appearance by the effortlessly charming Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel. Not only that, we get to watch Gabriel straight-up murder Asmodeus, and isn’t that what we all want in life?

Notable quote: “It’s been… um… what’s the opposite of fun? That.” -Gabriel

Season 14

14.15 – “Peace of Mind”

WB/The CW

This episode is actually what prompted this entire article. I needed a space in which to declare how my love for this episode burns like a thousand hot suns. It’s nearly flawless; a venture alongside Cas and Sam into the idyllic town that could give Pleasantville a run for its money. Dean partners with Jack as well, but the dynamic between Cas and Sam is what really sells this one. It isn’t often they get to share scenes alone, especially the more comedic ones. I can’t stress enough how much you need to watch this episode. It’s such a good one that I struggled to pick a quote because there are so many that are pure gold.

Notable quote: “God has a beard.” -Castiel

Season 15

15.10 – “The Heroes’ Journey”

WB/The CW

The final season brought with it a lot of throwbacks while simultaneously giving us a fair share of new ideas. For instance, the boys are stripped of their plot armor and have to deal with what is essentially a monster fight club. It’s the only time the Winchesters have been oh so very human, and it makes them all the more relatable. We’ve all been there: gassed for dental surgery and dreaming of tap dancing alongside DJ Qualls, right? No? Just me?

Notable quote: “You need to get a colonoscopy, stat.” -Garth
