The Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards nominations are out, and the hit movie from this summer Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds has received two nominations.
Free Guy is nominated for the following categories:
Best Visual Effects
Best Comedy or Musical
Directed by Shawn Levy, Free Guy released August 13, 2021 and immediately won the hearts of audiences. Free Guy follows video-game NPC bank teller, Guy (Ryan Reynolds) who develops free-will due to his artificial intelligence programming after meeting the love of his life, Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer). There are a couple of problems though: Molotov Girl is actually Millie, a real-world person and Free City, the game in which Guy exists, is at risk of being destroyed. Guy and Millie have to go against the clock as they are hunted by Antoine (Taika Waititi) and anything the video game giant can throw at them, including a CGI’d up Reynolds as Dude.

In this episode of The Sex Lives of College Girls, Whitney comes clean about the affair, Kimberly learns the truth about Nico, and Bela writes her first piece for the Catullan. Read on to find out everything that happens in “The Surprise Party.”
Warning: brief mentions of sexual assault.
Surprise! Nico’s a Cheater
HBO Max
Episode 7 revealed that Nico has a girlfriend, and she’s Leighton’s friend, Maya. Leighton is planning a surprise party for her brother and she, of course, invites her roommates to the party. Kimberly stresses about what to buy him and Whitney even suggests a journal, but Nico tells her not to worry about it. One surprise up Leighton’s sleeve is his girlfriend. Because his hookups with Kimberly have been mostly under wraps, things get awkward fast once the reveal happens. Nico tries to apologize but Kimberly wants nothing to do with it. On her way out of the frat house, she takes the Econ file he offered her previously to help her pass the class.
“Hot guys don’t journal. They let their thoughts fade away; that’s why they’re hot.”
Whitney’s Truth
HBO Max
At the beginning of the episode, Whitney shoots the winning goal to advance the team to the NCAA Tournament. Riding the high from the game, she gets called into her head coach’s office. She learns that someone has been sleeping with Coach Dalton and when questioned about it, she dodges it entirely. The truth coming out would ruin her future and her mom’s campaign. She plans on letting it disappear until she’s told the bus driver saw Dalton kissing a girl; not just any girl, one of the Black players on the team. She realizes she has to come clean to the coach, so she does. She goes to her home to admit she had been sleeping with him but it’s over now. However, the statement had already been given and she promised Whitney she wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore.
At the end of the episode, it’s revealed that both coaches were relieved of their duties and will no longer be servicing the team.
Bela’s First Winning Piece
HBO Max
Per tradition, every new Catullan writer must submit a piece on their first day. Carla offers to team up with Bela and it gets approved. While they’re discussing what they should write about, something is weighing heavily on Carla. Ryan (you know, the one being creepy with girls?) has been inappropriate with her, sexually assaulting her. Unfortunately, Bela had been in the same situation with him, but chooses not to say anything to her. When asked if she was planning on telling anyone, Carla confides she doesn’t know; everyone already thinks she’s weird. The next day, all members are told that Carla has parted ways with the Catullan for an unknown reason. Though Bela wins, she makes note that Carla helped her with that piece. Everyone brushes it off, making jokes of their own, but Bela knows the reality of the situation.

In this episode of The Sex Lives of College Girls, things get steamy between Kimberly and Nico. Meanwhile, Whitney and Canaan reconnect, and Bela preps her final submissions for Catullan. Read on to find out what happens in “I Think I’m a Sex Addict.”
Essex? More Like EsSEX
Kim wakes up in Nico’s bed after spending a spicy night with him. They decide not to tell Leighton. Later in the dining hall, Kim still tells Bela and Whitney. (And just in the nick of time before Leighton arrives.) Meanwhile, things between Nico and Kim get even spicier. Kim begins to miss class and showing up late to work thanks to the amount of sex she and Nico have. Lila eventually figures it out. Kim tells Lila about her slipping Econ grade, and Lila tells her to ask for extra credit.
So, she does. Professor Bennett agrees. However, when Kim goes to start it, the call of the eggplant is simply too loud. She and Nico get caught by Professor Bennett, and Kim loses her extra credit. When she goes to see Nico later (not for sex this time), he shows her a stash of test answers, but she declines to accept them. She instead suggest they go watch a documentary she’s excited about.
Whitney Makes a (Re)connection
HBO Max
This episode, Leighton learns about Whitney and Dalton. In the dining hall, Leighton lists her definitive famous Chris ranking (Pine, Hemsworth, Evans) when Whitney spots Canaan. Leighton sends Whitney to shoot her shot.
A bit later, Canaan brings Whitney to the Katherine Johnson House on campus. She meets another student, Jayla, who invites her to stay for dinner. It’s nacho night! Unfortunately, she and the other three have to go to an acapella show. After they manage to escape, Whitney returns for nachos (and Canaan).
The Funniest Person in the Room
HBO Max
Final submissions are due for Catullan. Bela and the rest of the hopefuls turn theirs in. After, Ryan shows her and a couple others the sacred upstairs of the house. Bela shows off her SNL knowledge, and geeks out over the autograph wall. But then Ryan decides to once again be absolutely disgusting. Bela is unsure how to respond, but she’s able to leave.
Back in her room, she waits to find out if she made the team. Just as she’s about to give up hope, a group of Catullan members knocks on her door. The start of the initiation ritual. She made the cut! We’re very proud.
Leighton’s New Groove
HBO Max
Things are going well with Leighton, Alicia, and the women’s center group. She finally seems to have a good rhythm going with them. Eventually, she and Alicia decide they’re officially girlfriends. When Leighton gets a call from someone named Maya, she tells Alicia not to worry. Maya’s not a threat. She’s Nico’s girlfriend. Oh boy.
The first eight episodes of The Sex Lives of College Girls are streaming now on HBO Max. Episodes 9 and 10 release next Thursday, December 9. Keep up with our recaps and other coverage here.
In this episode of The Sex Lives of College Girls, it’s parents weekend at Essex! The roommates and their families head out to a very expensive, very awkward dinner and Bela tells the truth about her career path.
All the parents arrive at Essex. Leighton’s dad is insistent on taking the “perfect family photo” because he’s had dreams about being an Essex family since Leighton was young. Whitney attends an event with Kimberly who is dressed in a Dashiki. Kimberly says she’s wearing it because she got an invite to the Black Affinity House so she wants to show respect.
Whitney waves her off to talk to her mom in private. She has something important to say but the Senator is busy, offering to fit her daughter into her schedule at a later time. Whitney tells her to forget it, she’ll see her at dinner.
HBO Max
Kimberly is stressed about affording the bill, even breaking out in hives over it. Leighton offers to pay for their share of the bill because her dad will never notice — until he does. Retrieving the credit cards for everyone to return them, he notices Leighton’s is in the bunch instead of Kimberly’s mom’s card. Leighton gets flustered trying to explain the situation; Kimberly says she asked her to pay. Kimberly’s mom is visibly upset about the entire ordeal and gives Leighton the cash to cover their portion, despite Leighton’s protests.
Bela’s spent the weekend convincing her parents she’s a neuroscience major, even having them sit in on a class with her. They spot her professor at dinner and tell her to say hello. The problem? He’s not actually her professor. She does what she’s told and her dad follows behind, offering him a Subway card. The professor says there’s been a mistake. He prides himself on knowing his students … and Bela isn’t one of them.
Bela must then admit that she is lying to her parents. She wants to write comedy. Her dad says they spend too much money for her to be “fooling around” at Essex. Her mom is much more forgiving and understanding about it, reassuring Bela he will come around and she will talk to him.
HBO Max
Once the dinner is over, Whitney and her mom are waiting outside for the car to pick them up. Whitney’s dad didn’t show up to dinner, and it upsets her mom that no matter how hard she tries, Whitney always hates her but loves her dad.
Kimberly stumbles upon the frat house to pay Nico a visit. They discuss dinner and how much it sucked. Nico admits for the record, he doesn’t view Kimberly as “poor.” Kimberly knows she is, but that’s okay. The two get impossibly closer until finally … they kiss. Kimberly asks if they should head to his room, Nico jokes about needing eight hours of sleep.
Leighton and Alicia are cuddled up in bed watching The Bachelor. Leighton says she thinks she likes Alicia more than anyone she knows. They fool around and, well, you know how the rest goes.
