‘9-1-1’: Our Biggest Questions Following the Season 5 Winter Finale

0

FOX’s hit first responder series 9-1-1 wrapped up the first half of season 5 with a Christmas bow but left us with a shocking twist, and many questions. As we wait for the return of the series in March, here are the biggest questions we’re left with after the winter finale.

Where are Maddie, Chimney, and Jee-Yun?

FOX

Season 5 has been a rough one for Maddie and Chimney. The season began with Maddie’s ongoing postpartum depression struggle for three painful episodes. Seeing no out, Maddie leaves Chimney and Jee-Yun in LA with no indication of where she’s headed. Episode 4 dealt with the aftermath of her absence for Chimney and he decides to pack up Jee-Yun and follow Maddie. We’ve had precious few check-ins with either of them since that decision. Episode 7 gave an update on Chimney and Jee-Yun who found themselves in Boston hoping to locate Maddie. While Chimney reconnects with an old friend there and gets some sage advice, that’s the last time we see them.

Their departure has left a gaping whole in the 118 (and in our hearts). It’s known that actress Jennifer Love Hewitt took maternity leave from the series, prompting Maddie’s departure, so we anxiously await her return. We’ve been robbed of excellent opportunities for the crew to coo over baby Jee-Yun and what we’re certain would be excellent Uncle Buck content. However, the show has the entire second half of season to bring us said content and deliver a satisfactory answer on where Maddie went and how Chimney convinces her to come home. (Plus we still have our hopes up for a Chimney and Maddie on screen wedding!)

Henrietta Wilson, M.D.

Aisha Hinds in 9-1-1
Jack Zeman/FOX

Season 4 heavily featured Hen’s journey as she embarked on a new life goal, becoming a doctor. Fans watched Hen attend her first year medical school courses alongside work and balancing her home life. It’s safe to say Hen’s plate was full in season 4. However, there’s been no major on screen time and only the briefest of mentions of her ongoing classes this season.

Is Hen still passionate about her plan? Is she struggling or thriving with the challenges of med school? We’d love to see more of her learning the ropes and gaining confidence incorporated in the remainder of season 5.

Is Eddie Leaving the 118?

FOX

Perhaps the biggest question on our minds is that winter finale cliffhanger; will Eddie really leave the 118? With the characters introduction in season 2 and phenomenal growth throughout the years we’d be hard pressed to imagine the 118 without Eddie Diaz (and 9-1-1 without Chris!). The show has grappled with what direction to take Eddie’s character, first he joined a literal fight club, then got serious about dating, then ended that relationship after suffering panic attacks at the idea of staying with Ana. It’s been a whirlwind of trauma for him so could his story be coming to a close?

Eddie’s an endearing anchor of the 118, often paired with the lovable Buck and producing a beautiful friendship between the characters that is hard to imagine the show ending without severe reactions from fans. It’s worth highlighting that the show has slowly introduced a new character, Ravi, who could be poised to take Eddie’s place on the 118 should he truly leave. Whether it’s a permanent move or we’ll see Eddie in a new capacity (perhaps only as an EMT or another “safer” role like dispatch), we remain hopeful this won’t be the last of Eddie and Christopher Diaz on our screens.

Hen and Karen’s Foster Journey

FOX

Hen and Karen’s foster parent journey is another beautiful season 4 storyline we’ve yet to revisit in season 5. The couple was put through the wringer of emotions as they grappled with fostering Nia, loving her, and then returning her to her mother. It’s a best case scenario moment for Nia and her mom, but a painful loss for Hen and Karen. They get closure when they see Nia and her mother at a park and after some conversation agree to continue fostering.

However, Hen and Karen’s home life has seen little screen time this season and it’s left a big question mark after their journey was featured so heavily. Will they foster again? Are they simply waiting for a child that needs a home? We hope to see more of this storyline in the second half of season 5.

So, Where is Karen?

Speaking of Hen and Karen, we’ve only seen Karen a handful of times this season. After heavy story developments in Karen and Hen’s lives these last seasons, Karen’s absence feels sudden and noticeable.

Actress Tracie Thoms has also been a guest star on Station 19 likely prompting Karen’s minimal screen time this season. We miss seeing our powerhouse couple of (soon to be) doctors on screen together and growing as a family. Our fingers are crossed that she will return regularly in the coming episodes for further details on the above changes to Hen and Karen’s lives!

Chris’ Two Dads

Jack Zeman/FOX.

9-1-1 is known for its amazing season openers and finales, so we were all moved when Eddie’s season 4 near death experience resulted in his telling a very worried Buck that should he die, Buck will legally become Chris’ guardian. It was a special moment that highlighted the profound bond between Eddie and Buck.

It’s been jarring to see a special moment like this glossed over in season 5. Neither Buck nor Eddie have mentioned it again and we still don’t know if Christopher himself is even aware of this arrangement. Adding insult to injury, we’ve seen far less Buck and Chris content this season, which is often some of the show’s most heartwarming moments.

Taylor “Why Is She Here” Kelly

Jack Zeman/FOX

Taylor Kelly first arrived on the show as a traffic reporter bent on breaking into headline news and chasing down the best angle for every story. She spies that opportunity when the 118 rescue the traffic crew from a crashed helicopter and she pitches a first responder coverage story. She and Bobby butt heads repeatedly over it, and Taylor fights to include Bobby’s accidental LSD-induced confessions in her piece. From here, she and Buck strike up an interesting friendship that slowly transitioned into a romantic relationship.

Season 5 took the time to dive into Taylor’s backstory and further develop their relationship (hello very first “I love you”s), perhaps hinting at Taylor as a more permanent fixture for the series. Alternately, the season could be setting up another crushing break up for Buck and a subsequent Buck 3.0 character arc development. Either way, we’re curious to see what the second half of season 5 has in store for Taylor and Buck.

Dispatch Developments

Jack Zeman /FOX

With Maddie’s absence, May is our only look into the dispatching world, and we’ve seen less of it this season. May faced some office drama with the “return” of Claudette in season 5. Claudette talks down to her, is the exception to the rules in many ways, and the two butt heads as Claudette takes over her calls. The character calls back to May’s earlier experiences with high school bullies and allows her the chance to grow as a character when she confronts Claudette.

It felt natural to introduce a new character as we wait for Maddie to return, however once they settle their differences, Claudette seemingly disappears from the scene. On a shown known for keeping its characters with big personalities, Claudette’s sudden absence is noticeable. When Maddie returns, we’d love to see how Claudette and Maddie interact! We’ve also seen much less of Josh this season, something we hope is remedied with Maddie’s return as well.

ALBERT, MY LOVE, COME BACK FROM HORSESHOE BAY

Of all the secondary characters to come and go on 9-1-1, none have quite stolen our hearts like Albert Han. His happy go lucky attitude and determination to escape the crushing pressure of his and Chimney’s father (something Chimney understands well) endeared him to us immediately. For 17 episodes we watched as he couch hopped, struck up friendships with the 118, and ultimately pursued his own career as a firefighter in the season 4 finale.

We’ve seen Albert only once in season 5, only via FaceTime with Chimney, and we sorely miss him as a recurring character. Actor John Harlan Kim took on a recurring role on the third season of Nancy Drew, playing the suave FBI Agent Park (and a love interest for title character Nancy). With filming for Nancy Drew wrapped in early December, there is a chance for Kim to reprise his role as Albert in the latter half of 9-1-1. Albert has become part of the 118 extended family and though he’s been absent in season 5, we’re certain fans would welcome his return with open arms (hopefully soon!).

It’s safe to say that we’re excited to see what 9-1-1 has in store for our favorite first responders when season 5 returns in March 2022. Check back with us for more coverage including episode synopses, photos, and more as they become available.

‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Explains What Happened After the Sarlacc Pit

The first episode of the newest Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, has finally premiered, and with it have come some long-awaited answers about how Boba Fett survived what was thought to be a gruesome fate by way of a Sarlacc.

During season 2 of The Mandalorian, Star Wars fans were shocked to see the return of the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett, who had accidentally fallen into the treacherous pit of a hungry Sarlacc and died in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi. While he did survive in the Expanded Universe, those stories were wiped from canon in 2014 in preparation for The Force Awakens and subsequently referred to as Legends. So for all intents and purposes, Boba Fett was still canonically dead up until his reappearance in 2020.

Temuera Morrison, who has a lengthy history with Lucasfilm that dates back to his 2002 appearance as Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones, suited up as Boba Fett for The Mandalorian. Despite Fett’s minimal screen time in the original trilogy, the bounty hunter has been a fan favorite character for decades, so his epic revival was a truly a cause for celebration. But one question still remained — how exactly did Boba Fett escape the Sarlacc pit? The first episode of The Book of Boba Fett has come bearing answers.

Lucasfilm

The episode opens with a sleeping Boba Fett. The bounty hunter was shown as being heavily scarred in The Mandalorian, but given his new status as the crime lord of Tatooine, he now has the luxury of sleeping in a bacta pod to heal. But his time asleep seems to be fraught with nightmares. Following a flashback to a very young Boba Fett mourning the death of Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones, we then see what happened when he woke up in the belly of the Sarlacc. Coughing and gasping for air, he turns on the light on his helmet and quickly takes stock of his surroundings. Spotting a seemingly lifeless stormtrooper, he makes his way over and steals some air from their breathing tube. Then, he engages his flamethrower, burns his way through the creature, and eventually digs his way up to the surface of the sand.

Exhausted, Fett passes out. A pack of Jawas later shows up on a sandcrawler and pilfers all of his armor, which would later fall into the hands of Cobb Vanth (as seen in The Mandalorian). As for Boba Fett? He was found by Tusken Raiders who decided to take him hostage. While his attempts to escape were futile, and he was unable to best them in battle, it was shown at the end of the episode that Fett had perhaps begun to prove himself to their leader after defeating a monstrous sand creature in battle with nothing but his chains.

It remains to be seen what other flashbacks are in store from The Book of Boba Fett, but it’s safe to assume that Boba Fett likely went on to gain the respect of the Tuskens. This would explain Fett’s fighting style and use of a gaderffii as a melee weapon, as first shown in The Mandalorian episode “The Tragedy.”

The next episode of The Book of Boba Fett will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Wednesday, January 5. Stay tuned for our weekly coverage, including episodic recaps and more!

‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Recap: Episode 1 “Stranger in a Strange Land”

The long-awaited premiere of The Book of Boba Fett is finally here, a Star Wars live-action series that sees the infamous, legendary bounty hunter reinvent himself on Tatooine alongside the mercenary Fennec Shand. The first episode, “Stranger in a Strange Land,” tells two stories simultaneously — the current state of Boba Fett’s new rule on Tatooine and what really happened to Fett after he was eaten by the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi (a question that has been plaguing fans since his surprising revival in The Mandalorian). Let’s take a look at some of the major takeaways from the first episode.

Surviving the Sarlacc

Boba Fett is plagued by nightmares as he restlessly sleeps inside of a bacta pod (which is why he’s looking far less rough than he did in The Mandalorian). And thus, an untold story that has been a mystery to Star Wars fans since 1983 is finally shown. We see Boba Fett as he finds himself in the belly of the Sarlacc. After stealing some air from the breathing tube of a lifeless stormtrooper, Fett uses his flamethrower to escape, and he digs his way through the sand to the surface.

He passes out from exhaustion afterward. As night falls, a pack of Jawas arrives in their sandcrawler and pilfers all of his armor (which would then end up in the hands of Cobb Vanth, as seen in The Mandalorian). Later, Tusken Raiders find him and take him prisoner. Fett is forced to walk behind the banthas on foot through the deserts of Tatooine. The Tuskens keep him tied up at their encampment, but he manages to break free from his bonds and makes a run for it. The Tuskens quickly catch up to him, and one of them challenges him to a fight, easily defeating him with their swift movements.

Just a day in the life of Tatooine’s new crime lord

Fennec wakes Boba Fett up and tells him that it’s time to start the day. Residents have arrived to pay their respects. Fett takes his spot on the throne with Fennec standing beside him. Dokk Strassi comes to welcome him to Mos Espa, which is quite awkward for both of them considering that he used to work for the Trandoshan. The mayor’s majordomo then presents himself in the mayor’s stead, though Fett is displeased to find that he has not come bearing a tribute. Rather, the mayor expects Fett to pay him. (“What? I’m the crime lord. He’s supposed to pay me.”) They send him away empty handed.

Two Gamorrean guards are brought in next. They used to work under Jabba and then Bib Fortuna, and they refused to surrender after both were killed. While they have been brought in as tributes, Fett proclaims that torture is not a part of his agenda as a ruler, despite 8D8’s insistence that he needs to project strength in order to be accepted as a daimyo. Instead, Fett sees an opportunity in the undying loyalty of the guards, and he offers them a job — which Fennec thinks is a bad idea.

Ruling with respect

Fennec continues to be confused by Boba Fett’s choices as they venture out into the streets of Mos Espa, something that Jabba rarely did. While she insists that he should be brought out on a litter, Fett has no interest in being carried around like a noble. Jabba may have ruled with fear, but Boba Fett intends to rule with respect.

In an effort to keep Jabba’s empire intact, they have begun to make their rounds. They pay a visit to Garsa Fwip at the Sanctuary, but shortly after they leave, they’re ambushed by a group of assassins. They manage to gain the upper hand once the guards arrive, and Fennec captures one of them to bring in for interrogation.

Fett proves himself

Fett is weakened after the surprise attack from the assassins, and he tells the Gamorrean guards to get him back to the bacta pod. He continues to dream, and we see more of his time with the Tuskens. A Tusken child brings Fett and the other prisoner, a Rodian, to dig for water in the relentless heat of the desert. The Rodian eventually comes across a strange body part, which turns out to be attached to an angry sand creature. While the Tusken, the Rodian, and the massiff that accompanied them seem unable to do anything, Fett manages to kill the creature with his chains.

The Tusken returns to the encampment, triumphantly holding the head of the sand creature. Fett walks beside them, holding his chains. The child parades around with the head, taking all of the credit for the kill. However, the leader of the Tuskens seems to recognize that it was likely Fett that defeated the creature. They walk over to him and hand him water.

The next episode of The Book of Boba Fett will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Wednesday, January 5. Stay tuned for our weekly coverage, including episodic recaps and more.

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’: The Best Tarlos Moments From Season 2

FOX first responder series 9-1-1: Lone Star is gearing up for a chilly third season so we are counting down some of the best moments from season 2 of one of the best couples on the series: Tarlos. Last season saw T.K. Strand and Carlos Reyes have some pretty big moments, from their first big fight to moving in together.

As Lone Star‘s leading LGBTQ+ couple, Tarlos was explored even more in season 2 and the two first responders experienced some terrifying moments that brought them closer together. As we prepare for season 3, let’s take a look back at some of their best moments from season 2.

126 Hangs

Just like many shows for the 2020-2021 season, 9-1-1: Lone Star, as well as parent series 9-1-1, took place during the COVID-19 pandemic for the second season. And because of it, we were gifted with plenty of scenes of Paul, Marjan, Mateo, and later, Nancy, hanging out with T.K. and Carlos at Carlos’ place for some 126 hangs. In the first episode, however, a very stressed T.K. finally arrives, without cheeseballs, and he tells Mateo that his “boyfriend” (the first time he uses that word with Carlos on screen) created a safe place for them all to hang out during lockdown and he’s not going to spoil that with junk food. While explaining to his coworkers why he’s so stressed, Carlos comes over to rub his boyfriend’s shoulders. It’s a short moment but a memorable one, nonetheless.

Hallelujah

The second episode was an intense heartbreaker. Due to the active volcano in Austin, the 126 took a call at a pool party where paramedic Tim Rosewater was killed. Following a devastating return to the firehouse, the crew went their separate ways to grieve as “Hallelujah” played in the background. T.K. goes to Carlos’ house, where Carlos is waiting for him and sitting on the steps. T.K. walks over to Carlos, sits down and Carlos just comforts him. It’s a beautiful and touching moment with not just Tarlos but the whole 126 during a heartbreaking time.

The Makeup

Since this is the best Tarlos moments, I am going to spare you from reliving the upsetting fight in episode 4 after Carlos introduces T.K. as “a friend from work” to his parents. Rather, just skipping right to their open and honest conversation. After talking to his parents, T.K. goes back to Carlos’ house to talk to him. Carlos admits how his parents never really talked about him coming out. T.K. tells him that it’s important for him to feel safe in the relationship and to take all the time he needs. He will gladly be his friend, or personal shopper, for however long it takes. It’s one of the most vulnerable scenes between the two of them and it follows their first big fight and it’s beautiful.

The Cool Kids Table

Kevin Estrada/FOX

Episode 7 of Lone Star sees T.K. in his new paramedic position at work. However, it isn’t all great at the start, as Nancy gives him the cold shoulder from taking over to rearranging the bus. As T.K. and Carlos are cuddling and watching TV, T.K. tells Carlos about his problems. Carlos gives him advice about how Nancy and Tim both were never really included in anything and that the firefighters are the cool kids. This conversation, in turn, makes T.K. realize just what he and the rest of the crew have been doing and Carlos tries to comfort him. It’s a short but sweet moment between the two and I wouldn’t have it any other way. More Tarlos cuddles please.

Worried Carlos

Jordin Althaus/FOX

One of my favorite episodes of the second season has to be the midseason finale, mostly because it’s very Carlos-centric and offers a lot of Worried!Carlos. After teaming up with Owen to find out where EMS 126 went, Carlos finally reunites with T.K. at Charles’ restaurant and the moment is as heartwarming as ever. A very concussed T.K. is relieved to see his boyfriend, and Carlos tries to hold him up as he’s slowly losing consciousness. Before Carlos goes to the hospital with T.K., it’s revealed that Carlos’ dad, Gabriel, knew of their relationship since they ran into them at the farmer’s market. He tells Carlos he better get a proper introduction next time. It’s such a sweet moment and definitely up there for one of my favorites.

The Big Move

T.K. and Carlos took a big step together in season 2. They moved in together! Owen even helps them and gifts them with Marlon Blendo. This moment really showcases just how far Tarlos has come, and how far T.K. has come, considering what his last relationship put him through. However, the move doesn’t last long unfortunately because….

The Fire

Not long after T.K. moves in with Carlos, they are the victims of a serial arsonist. As Owen tries to get a hold of his son, T.K. and Carlos realize that the house is going up in flames. Upstairs with no fire extinguisher, T.K. says they have to jump. They say what is basically a goodbye and “I love you” but before they jump, Owen, Billy and Judd come to their rescue. Outside on the ground, T.K. comforts Carlos, who keeps blaming himself for not having an extinguisher on the second floor. It’s such a heartfelt moment and a heartbreaking moment at the same time, and it proves just how much the two care for each other.

Honorable Mention

While the midseason finale included plenty of Worried!Carlos, it also included some Soft!T.K. moments at the beginning of the episode. This honorable mention goes to the moment during T.K.’s sobriety anniversary party, where he’s giving a speech to his friends and family. The paramedic mentions how since coming to Texas, he’s met an incredible man who showed him it’s okay to open up, and he and Carlos just look at each other. It’s a sweet moment that shows just how much of an impact Carlos has made on T.K. and vice versa. That they are able to overcome anything.

There will surely be even more Tarlos moments in season 3! So don’t miss the premiere this Monday, January 3 at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT on FOX! Check out our other 9-1-1: Lone Star coverage here. Take a look back at our favorite season 1 Tarlos moments here.

‘tick, tick…BOOM!’: 3 Songs That Reduce Me To Tears No Matter How Many Times I Watch Them

0

I stopped keeping track of how many times I’ve watched tick, tick…BOOM! since its November 12 release on Netflix. As a former theatre kid who used to dream of perhaps one day being in Rent, and who has watched clips of Larson for years with admiration, the film instantly found its way into my “comfort films” category.

tick, tick…BOOM! marks the directorial debut for Grammy Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda. Written for the stage by Jonathan Larson originally as a rock monologue and penned for the screen by Steven Levenson, tick, tick…BOOM! tells the story of Jon (Andrew Garfield), a young theater composer in New York City. Jon, much like many others in the big city, dreams of writing the next great American musical. Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a performance that could launch his career or destroy it, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere, especially those close to him. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and must figure out what he, like all of us, must do with the time given to him.

No matter how many times I watch this film, I am reduced to tears by three songs consistently. As someone who doesn’t generally cry due to films (The Notebook and The Titanic have never done it for me), I want to share why these three songs have the emotional impact they do and why, in my opinion, everyone should give tick, tick…BOOM! a watch if they haven’t already.

“Sunday”

Jonathan Larson’s loving homage and light-hearted parody to his idol Stephen Sondheim. The original “Sunday”, the masterpiece Act I closer to Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, features lead Georges Seurat guiding the subjects of his newest painting into a glorious chorus in perfect harmony while on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Larson’s version swaps the scenic island for the legendary Moondance Diner, where Larson once worked as a waiter, subbing himself for Seurat. With Netflix’s adaptation of tick, tick…BOOM!, debuting director Miranda had to transform this song from Sondheim, to Larson, to Miranda. The result is a beautiful tribute to four decades of musical theatre.

Through a series of cameos from Broadway stars and familiar choreography, Miranda brought Sondheim and Larson together in a way that celebrates the history and diversity rich in the two musical theatre giants’ work. The scene is enough to give me chills with so many familiar faces showing up, but when Garfield’s Larson takes Bernadette Peters’ hand in the same way Mandy Patinkin took it in the original “Sunday”, the tears pour out of me.

If Larson could see this song on this scale, with a full transformation for the diner, a full ensemble to bring the harmonies to life and the amount of broadway history that was able to be thrust into a two-and-a-half minute long piece, he would also likely be reduced to tears. Larson would no-doubt appreciate the scale of work Miranda and the entire tick, tick…BOOM! ensemble put into fully imagining his vision for this singular number.

“Real Life”/”Why”

Okay, technically this first entry is two separate songs, but they go hand in hand in such a phenomenal and heart-gripping way that it only makes sense to include them together. “Real Life”‘s lyrics may only consistent of four simple words repeated with growing expression and desperation, yet it manages to be tragic all the same.

In the film, we hear this haunting song beautifully brought to screen by the immensely talented Robin de Jesús portraying Jonathan’s best friend, Michael. Jonathan has just learned that the musical that took eight years of his life to write, Superbia, has no future and feels as though his time is running out. Michael and Jonathan get into a disagreement over Jonathan taking life for granted, and Michael has reveals to Jonathan that he is HIV positive and therefore time is truly running out for him. As Michael sings the question “Is this real life?” repeatedly, Jonathan makes his way through the city in a panic, an expressive and emotional monologue on his lips as the world seems to be crumbling around him.

What follows “Real Life” is perhaps the most emotional song from the entirety of tick, tick…BOOM! In “Why”, Jonathan recalls his fondest memories with Michael and their journey together as two artists trying to make their way in New York City from childhood to adulthood. Not only is Jon reminiscing on his life with Michael and the events that made him want to spend his time on musical theater, he is also questioning if he has what it takes to make it in Broadway and if the amount of sacrifice that comes with this career is worth it.

This is the number where we see Jonathan come to his senses and decide that he needs to continue putting his all into his art, no matter the sacrifice that comes along with it. Performance wise, Garfield can (of course) always be counted on to deliver an emotional and heart-gripping performance, which is exactly what he does. The tears start streaming down his face, and my tear ducts take that as their sign to join in.

Given that Larson would, in real life, go on to write one of the most impactful stories about the AIDS epidemic, these numbers are vital in showing one of the most pivotal moments in the young artist’s life.

“Louder Than Words”

Jonathan Larson had so many questions left to ask and so many questions left to answer before his tragic passing in 1996. Whether the questions were big or small, Larson created an incredible ensemble of lyrics for “Louder Than Words”, using the lyrics to pose some of the many questions he had.

Maybe it is the emotional monologue about Jonathan Larson’s real-life impending passing that prefaces the song, but by the time Garfield sings the lyric “Cages or wings, which do you prefer?” for the first time, I am in tears. The lyrics that were so carefully chosen by Larson and the questions he chose to ask in this song reveal so much about who he was as a person. Larson was artistic, emotional, compassionate and intelligent human being with flaws who wanted to use what he loved most to improve the world: music. His questions are as deep and introspective as the art he gave to the world.

The song ending with Jonathan playing “Happy Birthday” on the piano is more emotional than originally intended by Larson when he composed the rock monologue initially. The entirety of tick, tick…BOOM! leads up to Jonathan’s thirtieth birthday, which he has been dreading as the signifier that his youth is over and therefore his time to open his first Broadway show has run out. For me, this is emotional to watch now because Jonathan Larson deserved to hear so many more “Happy Birthday”s.

Bonus – “Sextet” from ‘Superbia’

The sheer joy of hearing music from Superbia is beyond words, so much so that when the workshop cast sing ‘Sextet’ I can’t help but cry. It almost feels surreal to get to hear music from Superbia, which I certainly thought would never be a reality for me. The robotic and futuristic tune is too upbeat and joyful to bring me to tears, but it does inspire goosebumps. I truly wish a full-length Superbia was something possible, but am endlessly appreciative of the opportunity to hear even just a sliver of the show Larson spent 8-years of his life writing … and re-writing. I would love to see Superbia realized to its full potential on-stage or on-screen one day, but would also completely settle for a soundtrack recording.

Be sure to watch tick, tick…BOOM! streaming now on Netflix.

Bookshelf Finds: ‘The Starless Sea’ by Erin Morgenstern

0

For a lot of readers out there, you will understand the torment of a giant To Be Read pile that just never seems to go down. Whether it’s a timing issue or the habit of buying too many books, you and I both know that most of those purchases are going to go on the TBR pile and will stay there for a very long time.

This is what has happened to our TBR piles since 2015, and we are now digging through it to unearth some old popular reads that have been steadily gathering dust to review them in what will be an ongoing series. The first book in our new series is The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.

The Starless Sea first came out November 2019 and was instantly a feature on Bookstagram, as Morgenstern’s first book, The Night Circus, had been a fan favorite. So it was only natural for everyone to rush and buy the second book.

The Starless Sea features Zachary Ezra Rawlins, a university student who enjoys novels and video games and found a magic door when he was a child but didn’t open it. Years later, he finds a book in the library that depicts the moment he found the door and wonders how a moment in his life could be in a book. His curiosity leads him on an extremely surreal adventure, full of whimsy and danger.

The Starless Sea is not at all like The Night Circus. Whilst both books are heavy on whimsy and magic, The Starless Sea asks the reader to put all logic aside and believe in the impossible. There are multiple tales within the book, going back and forward, and you have to pay close attention on how every story finally fits together. It really is like going down a deep dark rabbit hole. Since the book is almost twice the size of The Night Circus, you really do need to be invested to keep up.

The best part about The Starless Sea is that there is no fixed genre. Fantasy, romance, and adventure are all mixed up together and it keeps the story fresh. The detail of the surroundings is especially beautiful. What book nerd wouldn’t want to read about an underground world specifically for book lovers? Morgenstern has created a space we have all dreamed about, a space filled with books and candles and copious amounts of tea and cake, with cats sleeping in armchairs and reading nooks hidden away in every corner. The setting itself is what made the book so enjoyable, although I loved the characters just as much.

Erin Morgenstern is definitely an author with a unique and imaginative voice and this really stands out in her novels. I look forward to any other books she writes.

What did you think of The Starless Sea? Did you like it as much as The Night Circus? Let us know in the comments! If you are a fan of Erin Morgenstern, you can keep up to date with her projects by following her on Twitter he re.

‘The Batman’: The Bat and The Cat Play Games With The Riddler in New Trailer

0

A brand new trailer heavily featuring Batman and Catwoman has arrived for The Batman.

The Batman is a reboot of the iconic DC Comics property spanning all the way back to 1939. This film thrusts The Lighthouse alumni Pattinson into the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Pattinson will star alongside Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Paul Dano as The Riddler. The Batman is written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, with Reeves directing the film as well.

Reeves previously revealed that the film takes place in the second year of Wayne deciding to become Batman, so the vigilante is still green and figuring out what it means to be a hero in Gotham. With no less than four infamous villains being pulled from the comics and planted on the big screen for this movie, Batman will have plenty to handle.

The official synopsis follows:

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City,” reads the synopsis. “With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth, Lt. James Gordon — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman currently has a release date of March 4, 2022. Check out the new trailer below!

‘A Discovery of Witches’ Review: Season 3 First Thoughts

Less than two weeks remain until the third and final season of the romantic fantasy series A Discovery of Witches arrives, which follows the story of the witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and the vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode). Ahead of the premiere, we’ve had a chance to check out the first two episodes of season 3, and we’re here to share some of our spoiler-free thoughts.

As with the first two seasons, season 3 of A Discovery of Witches is based upon author Deborah Harkness’ third and final installment in the All Souls trilogy — The Book of Life. Following Matthew and Diana’s adventures in 1590, this season sees them return to the present day. Although the beautiful costumes, sets, and certain characters of the past will be missed, it’s a relief to see Diana back in her element and both of them reunited with the friends and family they had left behind.

While season 1 depicted Diana’s struggle to accept her powers as a witch, season 2 focused on Diana’s quest to come into her full potential. At her core, Diana was born to be an extraordinary witch, and season 3 has begun to tap into what a formidable force to be reckoned with she is. Palmer has always had a knack for going toe-to-toe with Goode’s snarling, temperamental exterior (and in the same vein, James Purefoy last season), but seeing her beside him when the playing field of their powers has finally been evened out adds a wonderfully charged layer to their dynamic.

A Discovery of Witches continues to make excellent use of its runtime, weaving together intricate threads of an intriguing plot and leaving viewers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what’s going to happen next. The show’s pacing has always been carefully balanced between world-building, plot exploration, and action, and that’s still very much apparent in this final season. It’s an impressive feat given everything that’s been packed into the show thus far, and it’s what makes it so enjoyable to watch.

The premise of A Discovery of Witches may be crafted upon Diana and Matthew’s romance (which is a swoon-worthy tale that Palmer and Goode continue to bring to life in a beautiful manner), but there are also so many other captivating characters to be invested in beyond our leading star-crossed lovers. Right off the bat in season 3, one of the most exciting familiar faces is Steven Cree’s Gallowglass (waltzing in fit for the 21st century), who was truly a standout addition to season 2. Malin Buska’s Satu is also back, promising what will most certainly be another hauntingly powerful performance, along with Gregg Chilingirian as the fascinating, enigmatic Domenico. The first two episodes also give a taste of this season’s main villain, who promises to be a wickedly alluring presence.

Additionally, here’s to hoping that the show is able to make more use of the talented Aiysha Hart after Miriam’s minimal role in season 2. Due to scheduling conflicts, Trystan Gravelle was unable to reprise his role as Matthew’s brother, Baldwin. Peter McDonald has stepped into the role this season, bringing something new to the table as the daunting head of the de Clermont family.

Overall, season 3 of A Discovery of Witches is off to a fantastic start, beginning to close out an epic series with the same high production quality that audiences have come to know and love. A Discovery of Witches season 3 will premiere on AMC+, Sundance Now, and Shudder in the U.S. on Saturday, January 8. Stay tuned for our weekly episodic recaps!

Marvel’s Upcoming Films In 2022 and Beyond

Contributors: Kaity, Lindsey, Hannah

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be ever-changing after the conclusion of the Infinity Saga in 2019, it’s certainly not slowing down. New heroes have been introduced, old ones have gained a larger spotlight, and the level of new content Marvel Studios has on their ever-growing slate continues to get longer. There are supposedly dozens of unannounced projects in the works, along with the multiple already announced. So, here’s what we know is coming on the film side of Marvel in 2022 and beyond.

Morbius

Sony Pictures

Release Date: January 28, 2022

Sony’s Shared Spider-Man Universe is expanding, and not just because of the multiverse being opened up in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following the success of the Venom movies, Sony will add another Spider-Man Universe anti-hero to their ranks with Dr. Michael Morbius in the upcoming action thriller Morbius.

Morbius follows the origin story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist with a rare blood disease who develops a cure. Unfortunately, cures come at a cost sometimes, and in Morbius’ case, the consequence is becoming a blood-thirsty half-vampire. Morbius will add to the list of anti-heroes joining Sony’s Shared Spider-Man Universe alongside Venom.

It is yet to be determined exactly which universe this movie takes place in, as the trailer contains references to Sam Raimi’s early 2000s Spider-Man trilogy, the early 2010s The Amazing Spider-Man, the MCU’s Spider-Man as well as a cameo appearance from Michael Keaton’s Vulture, and reference to Tom Hardy’s Venom. Jared Leto will star as Morbius alongside Jared Harris, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Marvel Studios

Release Date: May 6, 2022

The teaser trailer debuted in the end credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home and as expected will directly influence Strange’s story going forward. He’ll seek out Wanda from her mountain refuge she took off to after her stay in Westview and we’ll discover just what the Darkhold may have contained regarding the Multiverse. Wong, Marvel’s recently confirmed Sorcerer Supreme, will return alongside Strange and Wanda, along with Karl Mordo from the first Doctor Strange film.

Marvel’s first animated series, What If…?, is also set to become live-action canon as Dr. Strange is seen coming face-to-face with Strange Supreme, referencing the events of episode 4. Shuma Gorath, one of Strange’s biggest foes, will also be joining the ranks, who was highly speculated to also make an appearance in the animated series.

America Chavez, the Multiverse-hopping Young Avenger, is set to make her debut, joining the ranks of all the other previously introduced Young Avengers including Tommy and Billy Maximoff (Speed and Wiccan), Eli Bradley (Patriot), Kid Loki, Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), and Cassie Lang (Stature).

Thor: Love and Thunder

Marvel Studios

Release Date: July 8, 2022

Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is set to become the first of Marvel’s heroes to exceed a solo trilogy with Thor: Love and Thunder. Taika Waititi returns to direct the fourth installment where we’re set to see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster take up the mantle of the Mighty Thor.

Thor’s new best buddies, the Guardians of the Galaxy, will be making an appearance, along with the return of many Thor favorites including Waititi’s rock alien, Korg. A notable absence will be Thor’s brother, Loki, who has not been confirmed for the film. Loki actor Tom Hiddleston has mentioned to not expect him in the film, but as always with Marvel, everything should be taken with a grain of salt. Tessa Thompson as Asgard’s new King, Valkyrie, will return along with Lady Sif played by Jaime Alexander.

The new additions to the cast include Russell Crowe as the God Zeus and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. While no details about the plot outside of Jane Foster’s transformation have been revealed, it’s fun to speculate. Will Zeus be friend or foe to Thor and friends, and will they team up to take on Gorr? Or is there something more sinister lurking beneath Zeus?

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)

Sony Pictures

Release Date: October 7, 2022

Arguably the movie that started the multiverse craze, 2018’s animated hit from Sony Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will receive its first sequel next October. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will continue the story of Miles Morales as Spider-Man and his multiversal adventures with many Spider-Friends at his side.

With the first installment of this franchise taking place largely in Miles’ home universe, it appears that part one of the sequels will involve an adventure through the Multiverse. In the first look released early in December, we see Miles (voiced by Shameik Moore) and Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) reunite and head off into the Multiverse together. The fun doesn’t end there though, because fans of the web-slinger also receive a look at Miles entangled in a face-off against Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 (voiced by Oscar Isaac). Spider-Man 2099 first appeared in the end-credit scene for the first movie.

In addition to part one of the Spider-Verse sequels, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part Two) will be coming sometime in 2023, with no exact date confirmed as of now.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Marvel Studios

Release Date: November 11, 2022

After the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, so many questions linger about the future of Black Panther and Wakanda. Who will take up the mantle? So far, Marvel and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler are staying mum.

Speculation has risen around T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, played by Leticia Wright, as well as Winston Duke’s M’Baku, Danai Gurira’s Okoye, and even Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia. What is confirmed is that T’Challa will not be recast, so however, this movie begins is sure to be heartwrenching as we acknowledge the loss of T’Challa in the MCU more than two years after Boseman’s untimely death.

Martin Freeman will return as Everett Ross and Angela Bassett as Ramonda. Ironheart Riri Williams will also make her debut in the film, with her Disney+ series already confirmed with no release date set. Dominique Thorne will take up the mantle of Ironheart, a teenage engineering genius who creates her own version of the Iron Man suit. Later, Tony Stark relinquishes his hero ways and bestows the honor of being the Avengers’ armored hero to her.

The film is currently in production, facing a long delay when Leticia Wright suffered a back injury, rendering her unable to film. Production is confirmed to begin again in early 2022 after the holidays.

Kraven the Hunter

Marvel

Release Date: January 13, 2023

Kraven the Hunter will be Sony’s fourth Spider-Man universe antagonist project, following two Venom movies and 2022’s Morbius. Kraven will be directed by J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier), with the screenplay coming from Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk.

Wenk has spoken about the story for the movie being largely based on Kraven the Hunter’s most popular comic storyline, Kraven’s Last Hunt, and that there is potential for Kraven to receive a sequel. Considering the comic run includes an epic show-down with Spider-Man, there is certainly a lot of opportunity for Kraven the Hunter to be used by Sony to propel their Shared Spider-Man Universe forward even more.

Details are still scarce for the upcoming Kraven project, although superhero alumni Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been confirmed as the titular role, following his performances in other superhero movies Kick-Ass and as Pietro Maximoff in the MCU’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Marvels

Marvel Studios

Release Date: February 17, 2023

Captain Marvel is back with two new heroes at her side: Ms. Marvel and Spectrum.

Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan will appear in her Disney+ series before joining her namesake in the upcoming film. The Ms. Marvel series is set to debut sometime in 2022. Spectrum has already joined the MCU in WandaVision, with S.W.O.R.D.’s newly returned Captain Monica Rambeau gaining powers from her multiple trips through Wanda Maximoff’s Westview hex barriers. Monica is also the daughter of Carol’s best friend, Maria Rambeau.

Nia DaCosta will direct the sequel which is rumored to also feature Carol Danvers’ longtime friend Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, along with appearances by Zawe Ashton and Seo Jun Park in unknown roles. Filming for The Marvels began in August 2021.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Marvel Studios

Release Date: May 23, 2023

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been in development since 2017 when Marvel confirmed that James Gunn would close out the trilogy. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to be one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most influential movies of Phase 4, after initially being scheduled to kick off the post-Infinity Saga.

Gunn is keeping details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 relatively scarce so the movie can have the most impact. The core cast for Guardians movies up to now will return: Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, and Vin Diesel as Groot. In addition to the five Guardians, Karen Gillen will return as Nebula along with Pom Klementieff as Mantis. New to the Guardians ensemble is Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji as a thus far unconfirmed character.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take place primarily after the events of Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love & Thunder in which the Guardians are set to appear. Exact details on the story have yet to be unveiled, although multiple members of the cast have commented on how “emotional” the upcoming cosmic adventure will be. Gunn has also confirmed that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will play a vital role to Vol. 3, introducing a character who is, in Gunn’s opinion, “one of the greatest MCU characters.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Marvel Studios

Release Date: July 28, 2023

Helmed by director Peyton Reed and written by Jeff Loveness, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania will see the return of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/Wasp, Michael Douglas as Dr. Hank Pym, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne. Franchise newcomer Kathryn Newton will be stepping into the existing role of Scott’s daughter Cassie. Meanwhile, Jonathan Majors will be returning as Kang the Conqueror.

The plot of Quantumania, which recently wrapped filming, is unknown at this time. However, we do know that Kang took control of the Multiverse and the Time Variance Authority following the death of one of his Variants, He Who Remains, at the hands of Sylvie in the Loki season 1 finale. And given that the MCU has strategically been introducing members of the Young Avengers — an adolescent team of heroes from the comics — we’re also hoping that the news of Newton’s casting signifies the future of Cassie Lang as Stature.

Untitled Film

Release Date: November 3, 2023

While we don’t know what it is, it very well could be any of the properties listed below.

No dates set

Fantastic 4

Courtesy of Marvel/Disney

Ever since Marvel Studios acquired the Fantastic Four property in March 2019, excitement has built for the MCU’s take on what hasn’t been the most successful heroic group despite two previous attempts. Casting rumors have swirled as well as Reed Richards’ name consistently coming up in speculation for many of Marvel’s past projects.

Marvel has stayed silent on its Fantastic Four plans, only hinting at the arrival of the quartet with teasing images. The only known fact thus far is that Spider-Man leader Jon Watts will helm the Fantastic Four film, which is very good news, especially after his epic conclusion to the first MCU Spider-Man trilogy with Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Blade

Marvel Studios

A Blade reboot is coming, and Mahershala Ali will be taking on the role of Eric Brooks aka Blade, a half-human/half-vampire who lives his life in pursuit of eradicating the world of the undead. Blade was first introduced via Marvel Comics in 1973 and eventually made his way to the big screen with a trilogy starring Wesley Snipes that began in 1998. A television series starring Sticky Fingaz followed in 2006.

While minimal information has been released about the film thus far, we do know that Stacy Osei-Kuffour is set to write and Bassam Tariq will direct. Delroy Lindo was also recently announced for an undisclosed starring role.

Ali’s Blade hasn’t physically appeared in the MCU quite yet, but he did have an extremely brief voice cameo in the post-credits scene of Eternals. When Dane Whitman was preparing to reach for the Ebony Blade, a powerful yet cursed weapon, Blade chimed in off-screen, “You sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”

Captain America 4

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier saw Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson go on an arduous journey (both physically and mentally) to finally accept the Captain America mantle that Steve Rogers had passed on to him in Avengers: Endgame. Steve’s choice of a successor was undoubtedly one of the most worthy contenders there could be. However, for Sam, he had much to grapple with as a Black man who was being asked to step into the shoes of one of the most iconic superheroes to ever exist and to wield a shield with quite a complicated legacy. By the finale, though, Sam eventually ditched his Falcon getup and swooped in (literally) with his brand-new Cap suit, courtesy of Wakanda.

Earlier this year, news began rolling in that Anthony Mackie had reportedly closed on a deal for Marvel’s fourth Captain America film, which is said to be written by The Falcon and The Winter Soldier‘s Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. It’s unclear at this time if Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes will work alongside Sam in the upcoming film, or if he’s pivoting in a different direction for his next MCU appearance.

Note: Captain America 4 has yet to be officially confirmed or formally announced by Marvel Studios.

Deadpool 3

Fox

Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth will officially make his way into the MCU in what will be Marvel Studios’ first R-Rated feature film. While it appears that other former-Fox properties will be rebooted, this is not the case with Deadpool.

Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are attached to the project as the screenplay writers, with Reynolds overseeing the script due to his deep connection to the role. While the script is already in the works, filming on this movie probably won’t begin until sometime in 2022 or 2023, slating Deadpool 3 for a 2023 or 2024 release.

Reynolds is currently the only confirmed member of the cast.
