Today, fans in the US can finally begin streaming the first episode of the third and final season of the hit fantasy drama series A Discovery of Witches. Nerds & Beyond had a chance to chat with Alex Kingston, who portrays the witch Sarah Bishop, about season 3 and her experiences working on the show.
Based on the All Souls trilogy by author Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches follows the story of a reluctant witch named Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and a charming vampire named Matthew de Clermont (Matthew Goode). After giving in to the whims of their forbidden romance, the two find themselves wrapped up in a dangerous game as the world of creatures searches fervently for a long-lost bewitched manuscript.
Sarah is Diana’s aunt and the sister of the late Rebecca Bishop. Following the death of her beloved partner, Emily Mather, in the season 2 finale, season 3 will present new challenges and an enormous amount of grief for Kingston’s character.
Note: This interview has been edited for clarity.
Nerds and Beyond:Life has changed dramatically for your character, Sarah, at the beginning of season 3. You spent the first two seasons with Valarie Pettiford as a constant scene partner, but now Emily’s gone. What was it like working on season 3 with this new dynamic for your character and without Valarie?
Alex Kingston: It was very hard to film without Valarie. Particularly because we didn’t know until a few days before shooting began that Valarie was not going to be there. We finished season 2 under the impression that, in some way, the character of Em would survive or there would be a coma for a long time. We hadn’t been told definitively that she was dead. It literally was a few days before that we found out. It was, for me, a massive shock. I was really looking forward to having another season with Valarie, because we got on so well. We really had become such good friends. So I was super excited to see her again, particularly having been in lockdown with a pandemic. And, you know, she was allowed to come to London to film. It was so exciting, and then we were told she’s dead. The shock of not having Valarie was was, I would say, similar to the shock that Sarah experiences when she realizes that Em isn’t going to make it, and she dies.
Simon Ridgway/Sundance Now/Bad Wolf
It was very, very, very hard for me to film through the entire [season], actually. Whenever Em was mentioned, or there was something to do with Em, I would just cry. We were sort of like halfway through the season, and I thought I was kind of over it. And then, suddenly her name came up out of the blue, and hearing somebody say her name, I just completely lost it. I was a mess. So it was hard. It was really hard. But in the funny sort of way, for me, the season ends when things sort of resolve themselves. In a sense, I’d had that resolution as well for myself, because we just had to get on, and I had to get on without her. It was a different dynamic for sure. Without Em being there, it allowed for Sarah to learn to understand Diana and to connect with her in a way that she didn’t necessarily need to before, because Em did that. Sarah loves Diana, Em was the one who was the empathetic outwardly, where Sarah found it more difficult to be open emotionally. So that was the journey that Sarah then, in a sense, found herself on.
Nerds and Beyond:I was just speaking about the same thing with Teresa Palmer, because we had discussed how losing Emily has changed the dynamic between Diana and Sarah. I’m very interested to watch that play out. I think that Sarah and Emily were such a great pair, because they both had their own strengths. They were both different, but they worked so well together. It was great watching them on screen, so it’s going to be very interesting to see how Diana and Sarah now find their way back to each other without Em as that middle person.
Kingston: Yeah. And I kept thinking, Oh, come on, Em could be a ghost! Spirit! Please. The funny thing is, her loss is very much present in a sense. Her spirit and the lack of her actually physically being there, I think, is almost like a character in itself for the whole show. She’s gone, but she’s not forgotten. Her “being” is still very much present.
Nerds and Beyond: What do you admire most about Sarah as a character?
Kingston: I admire the fact that, given that she’s someone who — I mean, if you’re going to use the term, you could say she starts out as someone who’s kind of racist. But she is open enough as a person, or she’s willing as a person, to listen and accept that she is wrong. And is wrong about the ideas she had in the past about certain creatures. I think that’s one of the things that drew me to wanting to partake in the series. Because I felt initially, oh my gosh, this is a genre that has played out so many times, you really need another show with vampires?
Adrian Rogers/SundanceNow/Shudder/Bad Wolf
But this aspect of them, their fear of each other, their suspicion of those particular creature groups, their culture, as it were, I thought that is a parallel to the world that we’re living in. It’s so interesting, because in so many ways, they’re super inclusive, like there is total gender fluidity. They don’t even notice the things that, in a sense, we struggle with at the moment as humans on this planet. But yet they have their other forms of, if you’re going to use the word, racism. And that’s something that I feel that, Sarah, that’s a separate journey for her — the understanding that what she thought in the past was actually wrong, and she reassesses how she views people and reacts to them. I think that that, for me, is one of the greatest journeys. She learns compassion along the way.
Nerds and Beyond: Looking back on the first two seasons, since I know you won’t want to spoil season 3 yet, what’s the scene that stands out to you that’s one of your favorites?
Kingston: I’m going to tell you something about season 3, because it’s not going to give away any spoilers. It doesn’t relate to the scene itself or the storyline. As you’ve seen, there’s been a lot of filming in Oxford. And I hadn’t been, because Sarah had been in the States. I have rarely been to Oxford. So for me, just going to that city was extraordinary. But we then had the incredible good fortune of not only being allowed to film in the Bodleian Library, but within the Bodleian Library (which is this ancient gorgeous library in Oxford), there is a library called the Duke Humphrey. It’s not open to the public, you have to have a special dispensation to go there. It has the most rare and ancient books.
To actually be able to go into that library and just sort of be in this incredibly ancient world … I know that Teresa had filmed there before, but I hadn’t been there. So for me, that was super, super special. I mean, I don’t know whether I’ll ever be allowed to go in there again. I’m holding that memory. And also in season 2, I mean, I love filming abroad. I love filming on location. So to go to Italy and film there and be in this fabulous castle, those are the things that I love.
Nerds and Beyond: Yeah, I can understand that. The sets are beautiful. Just watching the show, even if you weren’t paying attention to the plot, just seeing the visuals … it’s amazing.
Kingston: Absolutely amazing. We were so lucky to have the design team that we did. It helps the acting, if you’re in something that feels so real. Whether you’re filming a prison show or a detective show or hospital show, if you’re in a truly authentic set, it just makes your job so much easier.
Nerds and Beyond: Fans are really excited for season 3, but it’s bittersweet because it’s the final season. So how would you sum up your experience working on the show? What’s a takeaway that you have?
Kingston: I joined an amazing family. It’s those relationships where you may not see each other for a while, but then the minute you see each other again, it’s as though time stopped, and you just continue from where you left off. I’d say that it was an amazing privilege to be allowed to be part of that journey.

It’s a bittersweet day — the third and final season of A Discovery of Witches has finally begun. Matthew and Diana’s return to the present day is a heartbreaking affair as they learn that Emily has been killed by Peter Knox, who is voted out of the Congregation for his crimes. Baldwin is displeased to discover that Sept-Tours has become a glorified boarding house for witches and daemons. Meanwhile, a blood-raged vampire is still on the loose …
A heartbreaking return
We pick back up at Sept-Tours shortly following the season 2 finale, in which Emily Mather was killed at the hands of Peter Knox, though thankfully Marcus survived his scuffle with the power-hungry witch. Matthew and Diana arrive home to a devastating, heartbreaking scene. Later, Diana is mourning Em when Matthew makes an incredible discovery — they’re having twins.
A familiar face arrives at Sept-Tours, sporting a fresh new haircut and a stylish leather jacket. While Diana is happy to see Gallowglass after a few days apart, he’s even happier, because for him it’s been centuries. Together, the witches, humans, daemons, and Phoebe discuss what to do about Peter Knox and what happened during Matthew and Diana’s time away.
Later, Phoebe tries to introduce herself to Matthew, but she receives a cold greeting from the vampire in return. Matthew is angry with Marcus because he believes he didn’t adequately fulfill his role as Grand Master in his absence. Riled up, Marcus takes the opportunity to bite back at Matthew for keeping the blood rage disease a secret from him.
Sarah returns to the place where Emily died, and the witches’ page from The Book of Life reappears. Sarah fills Diana in on what actually happened to Emily, who can’t bring herself to believe that Emily would pursue higher magic. She’s upset when Diana says she can’t use her magic to get Em back, so when Diana tells her that she’s pregnant, Sarah’s response is cold and disapproving.
Peter Knox’s punishment
Des Willie/AMCN/SkyUK
The witches, vampires, and daemons of the Congregation arrive in Venice for a meeting requested by Agatha. The vampires take the floor first, bringing up the concerning issue of the vampire that’s been on a human killing spree. (If you didn’t recognize the vampire leader of the Congregation, that’s because Trystan Gravelle stepped down from the role of Baldwin, passing it on to Peter McDonald for this season.)
Peter Knox eventually turns the conversation into an attack on Agatha, making note of the illegal fraternization of creatures that is currently taking place at Sept-Tours. Agatha, in turn, accuses Knox of murdering Emily and proposes that he’s removed from the council for his crimes. Baldwin seconds the motion because it’s an act of war for a witch to set foot in Sept-Tours without an invitation. The Majority vote, which includes Satu, does not end up in Knox’s favor. Knowing that her family is in danger now with a reckless Knox set loose from the Congregation, Agatha calls Nathaniel and tells him that he, Sophie, and the baby need to go into hiding.
A funeral and an unwelcome guest
A fog lays heavy over the grounds of Sept-Tours while they hold a funeral for Emily, sending the witch on to her next journey. Afterward, Sarah apologizes for lashing out at Diana when she told her about the babies, and then she gives her the page from The Book of Life. Baldwin is waiting for Matthew back at the house, and he asks where he’s been these past few months. He’s taken aback when Matthew reveals that Philippe gave his blessing to him and Diana for their marriage. A power struggle ensues as Matthew argues in defense of Diana’s family, but Baldwin reminds him that only the vampires should matter to them.
The de Clermont family sits around the table for dinner, strictly observing the covenant at the behest of Baldwin, while the rest of the house’s occupants dine elsewhere. Diana treads into dangerous waters against Baldwin’s temper as she questions the merits of the covenant. After dinner, she asks Matthew about a man that Baldwin mentioned — Benjamin. Matthew explains that after the First Crusade, he lost control on the human and turned him when he betrayed the creatures and threatened to expose them. He reflects on his terrible choice to abandon a newborn, blood-raged vampire. Diana realizes that she met him in Bohemia, at which time he went by Fuchs.
Gallowglass and Marcus lament over their current situation, and the former reflects back on when his father and Fernando formed a scion because of the difficulty of living under Philippe’s rule. He grins as he suggests that history should repeat itself. They gather the rest of the de Clermont family and excitedly pitch their idea to split up the family from Baldwin, but Matthew isn’t interested.
Refuge with Fernando
Des Willie/AMCN/SkyUK
The next day, Matthew, Diana, and the rest of Sept-Tours’ visitors take their leave. They seek refuge with Fernando, a vampire that was mated to Matthew’s late brother Hugh. Sarah is upset that nobody talks about Em anymore, and she’s surprised to find solace in Fernando. He explains that despite the fact that they were mated for six centuries, Philippe refused to recognize their union. When Hugh died, Fernando was alone in his grief.
Matthew and Miriam discuss continuing their research on the decline of creatures and the search for a cure for blood rage, but they need a lab. Diana solves the issue by introducing them to her friend, Dr. Christopher Roberts. Chris tells Matthew that he’ll need a bit more details from them before he agrees to take their project on in his lab. He laughs when they tell him that witches and vampires exist, but he’s quick to eat his words when Diana shows him her magic.
Benjamin Fuchs
Domenico meets with Baldwin to share some additional news about the vampire that’s been killing humans, something that he couldn’t share in front of the Congregation. He reminds Baldwin that he doesn’t have to be his enemy, handing him a folder that contains photographs from the murder scenes.
We then see Benjamin Fuchs in the current day. He receives a phone call from an unknown number and asks, “When did they get back?” in reference to Matthew and Diana. He exits his hotel room, leaving behind a bloody scene in his wake.

The feature-length, anime-style film produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Catwoman: Hunted releases next month.
Ahead of the release, new images tease Julia Pennyworth, played by Lauren Cohan. In the film, Elizabeth Gillies’ Batwoman will attempt a heist. However, multiple forces (including Stephanie Beatriz’s Batwoman) are in play.
Catwoman: Hunted also stars Jonathan Banks as Black Mask, Steve Blum as Solomon Grundy, Keith David as Tobias Whale, Zehra Fazal as Talia al Ghul and Nosferatu, Jonathan Frakes as King Faraday and Boss Moxie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, and Kelly Hu as Cheshire, among others.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be ever-changing after the conclusion of the Infinity Saga in 2019, it’s certainly not slowing down. New heroes have been introduced, old ones have gained a larger spotlight, and the level of new content Marvel Studios has on their ever-growing slate continues to get longer. There are supposedly dozens of unannounced projects in the works, along with the multiple already announced. So, here’s what we know is coming on the television side of Marvel in 2022 and beyond.
Curious about Marvel’s upcoming films? Check out our breakdown of those, too!
Ms. Marvel
Marvel Studios
Release Date: Summer 2022
Kamala Kahn is set to make her MCU debut this summer on Disney+ in Ms. Marvel. Portrayed by Iman Vellani, Kamala is a 16-year-old Pakistani American from Jersey City. While she’s an aspiring artist, an avid gamer, and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, she’s also a huge fan of the Avengers — particularly Captain Marvel. However, Kamala has always struggled to find her place in the world. But all of that changes when she gets powers like the heroes that she’s always looked up to.
The character Ms. Marvel was created editors Sana Amanat and Stephen Wacker, writer G. Willow Wilson, and artists Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie, first appearing in Marvel Comics in 2013.
The series is directed by Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. A sneak peek was shown during Marvel Studios’ 2021 Disney+ Day Special.
She-Hulk
Marvel Studios
Release Date: 2022
Move over, Mark Ruffalo, because there’s a new Hulk in town. She-Hulk will introduce Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, a lawyer who specializes in superhuman-oriented legal cases. Various Marvel characters are also set to appear, including Ruffalo’s Hulk and Tim Roth as the Abomination. Created by Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, Jennifer Walters’ history with Marvel Comics dates back to 1980.
Directed by Mohamed Diab, Moon Knight is set to hit Disney+ this year. Oscar Isaac joins the MCU as Marc Spector, a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The globetrotting action-adventure series will see the multiple identities that live inside of Moon Knight thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt. The character Moon Knight was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, first appearing in Marvel Comics in 1975.
The show’s exact release date has yet to be confirmed, but audiences were able to get their first glimpse at the show in Marvel Studios’ 2021 Disney+ Day Special.
What If…? Season 2
Marvel Studios
Release Date: 2022
Even before season 1 had debuted, Marvel confirmed that its first animated series What If…? would be getting a second season. The first season was met with mixed but mostly positive reactions, some episodes garnering more excitement than others. What If…? has also now gone MCU live-action canon, with the confirmed appearance of Strange Supreme arriving in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
What If…? brought back many of our favorite MCU voices, with uncanny replacements for those whose original actors did not return, with the notable final performance of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. The full season of What If…? was cut short, Disney citing the COVID-19 pandemic as reasoning, shortening the anticipated 10-episode season to nine. The 10th episode, centered around Gamora who did appear in the season 1 finale, was not included but will be featured in the second season.
Season 2 will explore more “what if” moments in the Marvel universe, bringing with it the same range of emotions felt in the first — some action, some humor, some heartbreak, and a lot of stunning animation.
Secret Invasion
Marvel Studios
Release Date: 2022
He’s been around since Iron Man in 2008, and it’s about time Nick Fury got his own story.
Secret Invasion was an eight-issue comic series, with multiple tie-ins, from Brian Michael Bendis highlighting a Skrull invasion of Earth, with many posing as Marvel heroes. Skrulls posing as Marvel heroes isn’t something new to the MCU, and may likely be revisited, after Spider-Man: Far From Home saw Skrull-versions of both Maria Hill and Nick Fury aiding Peter Parker in the fight against the Elementals and Mysterio.
Nick Fury has been off-world for a year at this point in the MCU’s timeline, hiding out on a Skrull ship up in space, while Maria’s real whereabouts are currently unknown. In the comics, there is no alliance between Skrull and heroes, so it won’t be following the series exactly as Fury is currently camping out with them as an ally. Why Fury went up into space after returning in the Blip is something we hope Secret Invasion addresses.
Ben Mendelsohn returns as the Skrull Talos and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, with Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Kinglsey Ben-Adir also starring in unknown roles.
No Confirmed Dates
I Am Groot
Marvel Studios
Returning from a fan-favorite performance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Baby Groot is set to star in his own original Disney+ series. Although we haven’t seen the baby version of audiences’ favorite Flora Colossus since the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I Am Groot, will feature Groot in his baby form once more. The series will be an animated series of shorts, and will feature new and certainly unusual characters that can only be expected of the Guardians franchise. While there is no official release date thus far, the series will be coming to Disney+ sometime in 2022.
Loki Season 2
Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios
The first season of Loki introduced the MCU to the Multiverse, something that is now being very deeply explored.
Loki was the first, and so far only, series to receive a second season (although we’re holding out hope for Hawkeye). Tom Hiddleston returned as the fan-favorite redeemed villain Loki and Sophia DiMartino starred as Sylvie Laufeydottir, a Loki variant hellbent on getting revenge for her traumatic childhood, much like the Loki we know and love. In the end, she did, breaking the Multiverse entirely after killing the Kang variant He Who Remains played flawlessly by Jonathan Majors.
The series left off on a massive cliffhanger, with Loki’s TVA reality as we knew it completely altered. His newest, and probably best, friend Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) no longer remembers him, and statues of Kang the Conquerer now stand tall in the TVA facilities.
We know Kang the Conquerer’s next appearance will be Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so expect Loki season 2 to come sometime after its July 28, 2023, as he’s surely tied into season 2 somehow.
Agatha: House of Harkness
Marvel/Disney+
“It was Agatha all along…” Everyone’s favorite new villain is getting her own series. Kathryn Hahn wooed audiences almost instantaneously as the charismatic Agatha Harkness in WandaVision and whether Marvel knew it was coming from the start or is capitalizing on her popularity isn’t known, but they’re correct either way.
Agatha Harkness has a rich comic history, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, as a witch older than the Salem Witch Trials and Wanda Maximoff’s mentor. While nothing about a plot has been mentioned, expect a dive into her past as one of the most powerful witches to ever grace the Earth (and Underworld). WandaVision‘s Jac Schaeffer returns to pen the script and executive produce.
Will Mephisto finally make his appearance here? That’s a joke. Or maybe it isn’t…
Armor Wars
Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studio
In the Armor Wars seven-issue comic series written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton, Tony Stark discovers someone selling his tech to supervillains, and while we know that won’t be how the series itself goes, we can imagine that Rhodey will still be protecting the late Tony Stark’s legacy from someone trying to steal it. (This has big Sharon Carter/Power Broker return vibes …).
According to a previous chat in October with Rhodey star Don Cheadle, the series is very early in its planning days, so casting rumors and more may start to emerge this year.
Echo
Marvel Studios
Hawkeye introduced us to Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, a deaf character who led the Tracksuit Mafia in the wake of her father’s death with her steely demeanor and strong proficiency in hand-to-hand combat. The Hawkeye finale (spoiler alert!) saw Maya leave the Tracksuits after she discovered that Kingpin was the one that orchestrated the death of her father. Before disappearing entirely, Maya shot Fisk.
Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada and making her first Marvel Comics appearance in 1999, one of Maya’s comic identities is Echo, which reflects her ability to copy other people’s movements. We can assume that in separating herself from her past, the series may depict Maya’s journey to leaving behind a life of crime and putting her abilities to use as a hero instead. And seeing as how Kingpin’s fate was left up in the air, it would be shocking not to see him pop back up. Maya also has ties to Matt Murdock in the comics, which feels quite convenient considering Charlie Cox is now officially Daredevil in the MCU following his portrayal of the character in the 2015 Netflix series.
The writing team for Echo currently includes Shoshannah Stern, Josh Feldman, Rebecca Roanhorse, Bobby Wilson, Steven Paul Judd, Jason Gavin, Ken Kristensen, Dara Resnik, Jessica Mecklenburg, Kaitlyn Jeffers, and head writer Marion Dayre.
Ironheart
Marvel Studios
Ironheart is set to star Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a genius inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man. Riri made her Marvel Comics debut in 2016 courtesy of Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato, Eve Ewing and Kevin Libranda. Following Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame, Riri’s talents are exactly what the future of the MCU needs.
Spider-Man: Freshman Year
Marvel Studios
Spider-Man: Freshman Year will follow Peter Parker’s journey to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU. Hopefully, this means Spidey fans will get a look at how the MCU version of Spider-Man got his powers and became the friendly neighborhood hero so many have come to love. The series will, according to the official press release, “celebrate the character’s early comic book roots.” Jeff Trammell (Craig of the Creek) will serve as head writer for the project. It is still currently unknown if Tom Holland will return to voice Peter Parker.
X-Men 97
Marvel Studios
First, the popular 90s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series is getting a reboot from Disney+ under the name X-Men 97. X-Men 97 will pick up where the fan-favorite 90s cartoon left off. Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf writer) will serve as head writer for this series. While no official release date has been announced thus far, the series will hit Disney+ sometime in 2023. Recording for the series has already begun.
X-Men ’97 will bring back original voice actors, both in reprised roles and new ones, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Alison Sealy-Smith, Chris Potter, Catherine Disher, Adrian Hough, and Christopher Britton. New cast members include Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio.
Marvel’s Zombies
Marvel Studios
Marvel Zombies will make its way to Disney+ back from the dead with What If…?‘s Bryan Andrews set to direct. Zombies were introduced to Marvel with a limited comic series written by Robert Kirkman with art by Sean Phillips in late 2005. It is currently unclear if the series will be a continuation of the What If…? zombie episode or a separate series entirely.
Untitled Wakanda Series
Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios
This one is still a complete mystery beyond knowing Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler’s involvement. In early 2021 Coogler signed a deal with Disney for multiple projects, and per his quote, they may have multiple series in the works, although not all will be centered around Wakanda.
“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company,” Coogler said. “Working with them on “Black Panther” was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.”
Anyone’s guess is good at this point in time, although many have been hoping for a series led by Dora Milaje General Okoye played by Danai Gurira.

Upside Down, Bouncing Off The Ceiling
Colin Bentley/The CW
In the upside dow — parallel reality, Hannah reveals that when Temperance returned to Horseshoe Bay, she saw a signal of six roses. As Keeper she was instructed to open the cell no matter what was inside it. As soon as Hannah unlocked the Copperhead’s door, Hannah was trapped. She chastises Ace for not knowing it was her, and Ace sarcastically replies that a ghost, “was a better guess than Hannah turned invisible and is trying to signal us for help by throwing things at me. I nearly got a concussion.”
Hannah shares an even more troubling factoid: when the moon is full, all living beings inside their parallel reality are “purged” forever. The next full moon just so happens to be tonight. Ace immediately wants to find Nancy, but Hannah thinks she won’t figure it out based on her fruitless knocking. Ace quietly says that, “I can get through to her, trust me,” in a move sure to make Nace shippers swoon. At the police station while Connor talks to Nancy, Ace realizes radios should get Nancy’s attention. He speaks to her through the radio, with Nancy hearing static bursts from a police radio. But Park turns the radio off in what is either an accident or brilliant scheming depending on his motivations, and Nancy walks away.
Later, after Ace gets through to Nancy, Temperance tells the group about the artifact as they assemble to save Ace and Hannah. Cora Dow had created it to experiment with time, but it decayed, releasing the energy that created the space Ace and Hannah are in. She needs a Hudson and a Marvin to help with the ritual as Bess and Nancy join in. After Ace and Hannah are saved, Hannah quits the Historical Society, feeling responsible for unleashing the Copperhead.
Bad Romance
Colin Bentley/The CW
Nancy comes downstairs to find Jean in the kitchen — meaning she spent the night with Carson. Carson arrives to interrupt the most awkward of morning-afters. It’s revealed that Nancy had told her father she was spending the night at George’s before Ace didn’t show for his love confession — meaning poor Nancy clearly thought a romantic night out was in her future.
At the station, Park helps Nancy with a broken copier. In a hilarious moment, Park goes to wipe ink off her cheek … as Nancy leans in for a kiss and is forced to swerve. This poor girl is striking out on all fronts today as Park blushes and stammers. Left alone, Nancy gets a call from Nick about the body outside the youth center. Nancy arrives with Park, and George immediately picks up on the uncomfortable energy. Nancy sheepishly shares what happened as George snorts, “You got swerved?” Nancy feels like she’s off her game, and George realizes what happened with Ace as she “pretends” not to know they’ve been crushing on each other. George pulls Nick away as Park offers to drive Nancy back, an offer she declines as she rushes for the safety of her own car.
At the ball, Ace tries to get close to Nancy. Connor reveals Ace missed his interview (“Hair that good never works in a morgue”), which tips Nancy off that there’s something serious happening with Ace. On the dance floor, Ace wants to try reaching Nancy again as an exasperated Hannah tells him that just because he’s in love doesn’t mean Nancy will hear him. Park finds Nancy in a coat closet, and they hash out their differences. Park reveals he can’t stop thinking about everything he loves about Nancy (SWOON). He says, “I knew if I kissed you, I wouldn’t be able to stop,” as he leans in. They make out (and perhaps more) in the closet, because Nancy is a woman with priorities and I respect her for it.
Colin Bentley/The CW
After their private party in the closet, Nancy and Park head to the dance floor as a crestfallen Ace watches. Ryan and Nancy make up from an earlier fight, and Ace attempts to tap Nancy on the shoulder as he whispers, “I need you to know that I’m here, Nancy.” Nancy feels something on her shoulder, but can’t make out what it is. Ace is tapping in Morse code on her shoulder, and she finally makes out A-C-E. The rest of the message comes through, and Nancy goes to Temperance for help.
Ace returns right behind Nancy when the ritual is complete. She hugs him, and he reveals his closeness was on purpose: “I figured if I was going to be obliterated from existence, it might as well happen while I was looking at … a friend” (Oh, Ace, my beloved.) Park asks Nancy out to dinner, which she happily accepts with a kiss as poor Ace arrives looking for his jacket just in time to see the kiss. Cue the wallowing Taylor Swift song of your choice, I personally threw on “All Too Well” but there’s no shortage of options! Nancy apologizes for not realizing Ace was missing sooner, and Ace immediately empathizes and tells her not to worry. They awkwardly say good night as a devastated Ace hides his pain.
A Little Party Never Killed Nobody
Colin Bentley/The CW
Bess is trying to extract information from Temperance as they prepare for the Long Night Ball that evening. She is not at all subtle about this, but she notices that Temperance’s blood map is spilling over. Temperance seems just as surprised as Bess. Bess keeps frantically calling Ace for help as Temperance finds the small medal the technician died holding. Bess casually asks if this has anything to do with the “blood map” and Temperance gives her a not-at-all reassuring, “All will be revealed in good time,” as she saunters away.
Bess goes to Addy for help, but Addy isn’t sure about the significance of what Temperance found. Bess decides to dose Temperance with a truth spell at the ball. Everyone looks spectacular at the ball as Nick and George dance. Nancy asks Ace via text why he stood her up as Park arrives. Bess puts her plan into motion as Temperance gives her speech. Unfortunately for Bess, Temperance realizes what happened and has everyone light their candle from hers, spreading the spell.
Nancy asks what Park looks like naked while George confesses her secret misgivings about her relationship with Nick. Addy appears unaffected and frantically tells Bess something went wrong, but she can’t stop talking either. Connor the coroner even confesses to leaving his socks in the freezer and blaming it on Leo. Bess realizes she’s been played as Temperance looks on. Addy accidentally reveals that she does know what the ore is, but didn’t share it because it is sacred to her people. Jean asks why Carson didn’t tell Nancy about her, and Carson shares he was afraid after Karen.
In the most devastating moment of the ball, George and Nick fight, with George saying he needs to save everyone and that that’s why he loved her while Nick asks if she ever really loved him. George says she does, but she doesn’t compare to his fantasy girl who needs saving in his head. Nick walks away, and both are devastated. Temperance tells Bess she is trying to collect all four pieces of Charity’s soul to bring her back, supposedly under the influence of the serum. She also tells Bess that she purposely spread the truth serum to get back at Bess for trying to trick her.
Darkness on the Edge of Town

Early in the episode, a man fixing a pipe frantically looks at a small item as sensors go off everywhere. Suddenly, a green mist overtakes him, and he passes out, choking. At the youth center, Nick and George talk about a burst pipe incident as Addy notes the two are no longer engaged. Nick chases after a loose ball and finds the technician from earlier in his tent.
Park says it’s tough to rule out natural or supernatural causes of death yet for the technician. Additionally, the utility company has never seen this man before. Connor the coroner, my favorite recurring character, returns to tell them that he has no idea how this man died, ruling the cause of death as inconclusive for now. He says, “It’s like the life was sucked right out of him. And I would know since I sat through Leo’s first grade production/debasement of Our Town” (I love this man.) Connor does have an ID: the man’s name was Michael Isaacs. He casually mentions that Ace had an interview with him scheduled for the afternoon before leaving, surprising Nancy.
Ryan’s old friend Tyler arrives. Ryan thinks he’s here for business, but Tyler is looking to find someone to clean up his image from “bogus” ethics complaints. He’s impressed by Ryan donating to the youth center and cleaning up the Hudson name. If Ryan can do the same for him, he’ll make Ryan the head of corporate giving at his company. Ryan calls Nick regarding Tyler’s offer as Nick frantically tells him now is not the time considering there’s a dead body in the parking lot. Ryan pitches George and Nick on Tyler’s donation as Addy overhears. She tells them that Tyler’s business is deeply unethical, tainting the water supplies of several communities. Ryan protests that Tyler’s making amends which Addy says isn’t enough. Nick has reservations about the way Tyler want the money used. Addy points out that the field Tyler wants them to build a pool on is sacred.
Ryan goes back to Tyler, who reveals that the real reason for asking to build the pool is to get at a rare mineral under the town. He notes his competitor at Swift Enterprises (Hi Tom!) probably figured out the ore was there first. He promises Ryan that the offer is real — he just needs that pool. At the ball, Nancy and Ryan fight over Tyler and the ore, both saying heated things they don’t mean as the truth spell takes over.
Ryan, wanting to prove Nancy wrong, doses Tyler with the truth serum. It works, and Tyler reveals everything as Ryan records him. It turns out Tyler is actually after an indigenous artifact and will try to seize the youth center land by eminent domain to get it. Ryan threatens to release the audio unless Tyler gives up his quest for the land. After the ritual, Addy kisses Bess to remind her that she loves her and that she shouldn’t beat herself up. Addy wonders why the artifact was buried in the field as they slow dance.
At the youth center, Nick remains playing basketball. He sees Temperance in the tent and confronts her. Turns out, Temperance’s plan was a bit more complex than she told Bess. Once she reassembles Charity’s soul, she needs to bring out the darkness under Horseshoe Bay to destroy the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead (seems simple, what could go wrong?). This is why the Women in White kicked her out. She says Nick will give her access to complete the ritual and not tell anyone, or she will kill every child at the youth center via a hex (harsh, but effective.) She needs three days, and her symbols around the tent light up as Nick looks on in horror.
