‘Moon Knight’: Breaking Down Details From the Trailer

The highly anticipated trailer for Marvel Studios’ next Disney+ series, Moon Knight, is finally here, which will see Oscar Isaac truly embrace the chaos as a haunted, complex vigilante. From what we’ve seen so far, it appears that the show is poised to envelope audiences in what may be one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most dark and twisted ventures yet.

Moon Knight is due to hit Disney+ on March 30, and in the meantime, we’ve broken down some key details from the trailer.

Steven Grant

Moon Knight is Marc Spector, a man who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. In the comics, two of his personalities that often come to the forefront are millionaire Steven Grant and cab driver Jake Lockley. Meanwhile, Marc himself has a history as a boxer, a Marine, and a CIA operative.

In the trailer, we see that he has been living in London as Steven, a mild-manned gift shop employee with a sleeping disorder (who also happens to be plagued with blackouts and memories of another life). The show’s official synopsis confirms that the MCU’s Marc is a mercenary as well. It remains to be seen if Jake will make an appearance.

Who is Layla?

Steven finds a phone, and when he answers it, a woman named Layla (portrayed by May Calamawy) says, “Oh my god, you’re alive. What’s wrong with you, Marc?” This confuses Steven, who appears to be repressing Marc Spector. We’ve got a few options here with her, since the trailer subtitles didn’t reveal her last name. There’s a mutant in Marvel Comics named Layla Miller, though it’s unclear how she would tie into the story of Moon Knight in a relevant manner, so that feels like an unlikely long shot. She could also be a modified version of Marc’s love interest Marlene or another existing comic character, or she may simply be an entirely new character for the show.

Ethan Hawke confirmed as Arthur Harrow

We now know that the villain that Ethan Hawke is portraying is Arthur Harrow, a minor character from the comics and an enemy of Moon Knight. From what we already know of him, he’s a scientist, but he’s certainly looks like a cult leader in the trailer (and Hawke previously confirmed that be based his character on David Koresh). Initially, audience speculation for Hawke’s character included Sun King and Randall Spector aka Shadow Knight — and who knows, Marvel could be merging characters here!

The creature in the bathroom

At one point, Moon Knight can be seen punching a viscous-sounding creature on the floor of a bathroom, and it appears that the fight partially destroyed the room. Though the trailer doesn’t quite give us a good look at it, it could very well be a Jackal.

A glimpse at Khonshu

Moon Knight trailer
Marvel Studios

There’s a very brief moment during the trailer when we get a glimpse at the Egyptian god of the moon, Khonshu. In the comics, Marc is left for dead in the desert during his time as a mercenary, and Khonshu brings him back to life in exchange for his service as the vigilante Moon Knight.

Moon Knight will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on March 30. Stay tuned for all of our coverage on the series, including episodic recaps, theories, reviews, and more!

‘Moon Knight’ Official Trailer Released, Premiere Date Announced

2021 was undoubtedly a jam-packed year for Marvel Studios. Not only were there four films on the slate, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe also expanded exponentially by introducing Disney+ exclusive television shows as well, capping off the year with five incredible new series when all was said and done.

Looking to 2022, fans eagerly waited for news during Marvel’s Disney+ Day special last November. While several teases were shown for what’s to come this year, the only show that received a hint of a release date was Ms. Marvel, which will land on the streaming service this summer. Considering that Hawkeye ended in December and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness won’t arrive until May, this would be quite a drought for audiences after all that the previous year had to offer.

However, fret not, Marvel fans … “the one you see coming” will be here sooner than we thought. The official trailer for Moon Knight was released tonight, along with some exciting news — the series will premiere on Disney+ on March 30! The first poster for the show has also been revealed.

Moon Knight follows Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac), a mild-mannered gift-shop employee who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy also star.

Watch the trailer below.

The series is directed by Mohamed Diab and the team of Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead. Jeremy Slater is the head writer, and Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Mohamed Diab, Jeremy Slater and Oscar Isaac are the executive producers.

The character of Moon Knight was created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, making his first appearance in Werewolf by Night issue #32 in 1975.

Stay tuned for more news on Moon Knight, including episodic recaps, reviews, theories, and more, and check out what else is still to come from Marvel Studios — series-wise — in 2022 and beyond.

Benedict has announced the link to pre-order a physical copy of the album, too!

A tracklist was also released, which features his singles such as “Elevator” and “Secret”, as well as seven other songs.

2. Secret
3. Elevator
4. Star
5. Easy To Me

8. Cautionary Fairytale
9. Leave The Light On

Here’s more about the album:

“Leave The Light On is actor Rob Benedict’s first solo album after three decades as lead singer of the LA-based indie band Louden Swain.  The songs were written during a personal tumultuous time, which found Rob rebalancing himself after the devastation of the divorce of a twenty-four year marriage.  The album was composed over the last 5 years and completed during lockdown.  To record the songs, Rob traveled to Nashville and enlisted producer/musician Tyler James (Escondido, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes) to produce and help orchestrate.  The result is a 9 song record that shows a side of Rob that few people have heard – a deeply introspective and sonically rich atmosphere filled with discovery and ultimately, hope.”

You can pre-order your copy of Rob’s album here. It will also be available digitally on Apple Music, Spotify, and more. Make sure to check it out when it releases on January 21!

James Bay Releases Clip of New Song “Brilliant Still”

0

James Bay is staying booked and busy, especially with news of his New Songs New Stories tour (that sold out in a matter of hours) beginning later this month. Gearing up for the tour, the English singer-songwriter has released multiple clips on Twitter of new music — songs that will debut on the tour and that are presumably from his third album that is currently in the works. Today, Bay took to Twitter to release another clip of a new song titled “Brilliant Still.” Check it out below.

This is nowhere near the first new clip that Bay has released. From “Can I Stay Tonight” to “Better” to songs with no title revealed, the singer has kept fans on the edge of their seats with all of the new tunes.

While tickets may be sold out for the New Songs New Stories tour, hopefully, Bay will continue his sneak peeks on Twitter and release news about his long-awaited 3rd studio album soon. As always, stay tuned for more updates.

Daniel Brühl Joins Cast of ‘The Movie Teller’

0

As first reported by Variety, Daniel Brühl has joined the cast of director Lone Scherfig’s upcoming Spanish-language film, The Movie Teller.

Brühl is known for his portrayal of Baron Helmut Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making a comeback in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as well as his leading roles in The Alienist and Rush. The Spanish-German actor, while most often seen in English or German-language roles, is also fluent in Spanish, which can be seen in several of his films, such as Los Pelayos, Eva, and 7 Days in Havana.

He’s set to star alongside Bérénice Bejo and Antonio de la Torre in The Movie Teller, in which he will portray a character named Nansen. After the European outsider earns the respect of the families that he encounters at a Chilean mine, he finds himself in a relationship with a local woman named María Magnolia (portrayed by Bejo).

Sara Becker will play María’s daughter, who is the town’s “movie teller” thanks to her special knack for story-telling. While the town residents cannot afford to go to the movie theater themselves, they raise enough money to send María’s daughter alone so that she can “recount to them the stories she’s seen on screen” and “bring the tales to life” upon her return.

The Movie Teller, which is adapted from Hernán Rivera Letelier’s autobiographical novel, will begin shooting on March 21 in Pedro de Valdivia.

Interview: Cranston Johnson Talks ‘Naomi’ and Playing Zumbado

On January 11, The CW debuted its newest series, Naomi. The show follows its title character Naomi McDuffie. When a strange event shocks her town of Port Oswego, Naomi enlists the help of her friends to discover its origins. Along the way, she confronts people who will be the key to unravelling an important mystery. One such person is used car salesman Zumbado, played by Cranston Johnson.

Prior to Naomi, Johnson has brought his talents to both film and television. He’s best known for his role as Detective Marvin Hanson the television series Hap and Leonard. Johnson also played recurring roles in shows such as P-Valley, Atlanta, and Filthy Rich, among others. His most recent foray into film is in Women Is Losers, streaming on HBO Max. Other film credits include The 24th, The Best of Enemies, and more. To celebrate the premiere of Naomi, we had the opportunity to talk with Cranston about the show and his role as Zumbado.

Note: This interview was edited for clarity.

Nerds & Beyond: First of all, I want to congratulate you on Naomi! I’m so excited to see this show. What has your experience been like working on the show thus far?

Cranston Johnson: Thank you so much. It’s been a dream come true, outside of the COVID restrictions, which have been a little restrictive. But, you know, as actors, we’re conditioned to kind of have these hurdles come in, and you find a way to get over them and continue to create.

But outside of that, cast, crew, being in Atlanta – I’m originally from North Carolina, so being back that close to home where I can see my family and everything, it just feels like everything… It’s kind of like a perfect storm. It’s been amazing. Very fulfilling work to play the character of Zumbado. It’s really like a family atmosphere with our wonderful cast. And I’m excited to be doing work with Ava DuVernay, somebody who I’ve looked up to for a while. It’s been an awesome experience. I couldn’t ask for more. I’m very grateful for it.

Nerds & Beyond: What drew you initially to the character of Zumbado?

Cranston Johnson: So, initially when I got the read, I usually first and foremost look over the sides, flip through the script, or whatever. But then you kinda see who’s attached to it, like who the writers are, who the executive producers are, or the director and all these things. And I saw Ava’s name on there – and I’m just piggy-backing on what I said before – she’s someone that’s really inspirational to me on a personal and professional level. I had the opportunity to audition for her for a couple of other projects, and for this thing to come around full circle and to be cast in the role was very exciting.

But initially, the fact that the character is written as an enigma is really, really exciting to me. I love playing characters that aren’t just cut and dry, that you can’t just pick out and tell who they are immediately. To me, that’s my most exciting work to do. So, when I saw that he’s this enigmatic, mysterious used car owner that is kind of lurking, you know. The audition scene was the scene from the pilot, the one where I have this interaction with Naomi in the woods. And it was just so well written, and there were so many layers to inject aggression, to inject vulnerability, to inject just this mystery of what you want to do. I was like, “Wow. This is amazing. I would love te play this character.” And just reading and doing research of the comic book and the origin of Naomi and everything. Her being a young, Black teenage superhero. All those things are just very inspirational to me. So, it was really exciting to be attached to the project and getting to do this wonderful work that I’m blessed to do right now.

Nerds & Beyond: And bouncing off of that, you do mention how – I mean he is this very sort of like mysterious character. Can you explain a little bit about how you really got into the headspace of playing somebody like him?

Cranston Johnson: So, when I began to break him down, the main thing that I wanted to focus on, of course, is to honor the text that you’ve been given. Honor the circumstances that you’ve been given. But you know, also trying to find these little Easter eggs, these little nuanced moments that you can bring to the character to make it – you need to make it exciting and fun to watch.

So, one of the things that I wanted to focus on was just kind of approaching him and playing him from a calm, relaxed, and in control type of character. Obviously, he appears to be imposing. He appears to be dangerous and all of these things. So, you know, there’s no need to be super aggressive with your vocal tone or any of that. Because to me, the scarier people are the people who will whisper something to you in your ear rather than the person who’s yelling at the top of their lungs about something that they’re gonna inflict this pain on you. To me, it’s always the scary guy that’s gonna whisper that and be kind of calm and relaxed. So, I really kind of enjoy being that creepy guy. [laughs] You know, the guy kinda lurking in the alley in the middle of the night. It’s kind of fun doing that, and I got a kick out of just seeing some of the fear that Kaci [Walfall] was projecting on to me. It was just really motivational to play that role. I really enjoy that. That’s exciting to me.

Nerds & Beyond: Yeah, I definitely think you nail it. I was a little creeped out by him in this first episode for sure. [laughs] So you definitely nailed it.

Cranston Johnson: Well, thank you. [laughs] Thank you so much.

Nerds & Beyond: And I also think what’s so interesting about this show already is how it subverts what we’ve become so accustomed to seeing with superheroes in film and television. Why do you think that’s so important for this show?

Cranston Johnson: Well, I think it’s important because, if nothing else, it’s just a fresh spin on something that’s been done. Comic books have existed for many decades, and there’s so many fans of these comic books and of these adaptations that come to film and to television. One thing that I was really excited about is that these people are in plain clothes. ‘Cause a lot of times when you think of comics, you think of the cape, or the tights, or you know whatever the costume may be. But I really enjoy that, at this moment, we appear to be every day, oxygen breathing human beings. And you know, what separates Zumbado from someone else outside of his creeping if he looks like just a regular guy. To me, grounding it in that reality makes it very interesting and special to watch, because then, when the supernatural things come in, to me it amplifies the intensity of the supernatural once you see what appears to be normal people doing these things. So, I really enjoy that, and I think that unique spin that – I’m sure it has been done, but I really like that avenue that the creators and the writers have taken for Naomi.

Nerds & Beyond: And sort of speaking of just superheroes in general, we’ve already seen how important Superman specifically is to Naomi. So, for you, what do superheroes in general mean to you?

Cranston Johnson: Well, superheroes to me, in general, I think, of course, Superman – my first experience, I think of any comic book characters – Superman, Wonder Woman – you know, they’re just very iconic. They’ve been around forever, and to me, they just represent… I guess just an escape from the everyday reality that we have. It’s just something fun to kind of get immersed into these worlds of the supernatural, and just asking yourself these questions of what if this was real? What if people did have these powers? I think it’s just a fun time to escape from your normal, everyday kinda reality and just kind of sit back and enjoy watching these characters save the world or go through their origin stories, as we’re watching right now with Naomi, because part of her is starting to dip her toe into that water of understanding what does this mean? Who am I? So, for me that’s what superheroes represent.

cranston johnson
Boris Martin/The CW

Nerds & Beyond: What do you hope viewers take away from this show in general?

Cranston Johnson: I hope that viewers take away from our show what the tagline is for the show – to not believe everything you think. And by that, get out and make your own discovery. Get out and experience life for yourself. Don’t take everything that you’ve been taught – whether it’s in school, whether it’s from your friends, whether it’s from whatever. Wherever you get your education from, don’t 100% solely rely on that and take that as gospel. Get out and do your own research. Get out and explore the world and ask the difficult questions that may make people uncomfortable sometimes but will give you just a better understanding of maybe who you are or why things work the way that they work. Because I think we fall into this comfortable mindset once we’re conditioned, whether if we watch the news and we’re just, you know, we’re like, “Okay. That’s what happened then.” Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t, you know. Just be curious. I think that’s what I want people to take from our show – to intrigue their curiosity.

Nerds & Beyond: Finally, my last question for you, what are you most proud of with your portrayal as Zumbado and also the show?

Cranston Johnson: Well, I’m most proud of the show [for] the fact that we have a young, Black female superhero. To me, that’s very empowering, being a Black man to see that we can be interpreted as superheroes as well on screen. I think it’s very exciting for my little cousins, my nieces. I’m so excited that I have some comic books that I got signed by the cast, and I can’t wait to get those to them just to show them and to liberate them – to let them know that you’re special, you know. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not special, whether they find inspiration through Naomi or whatever it may be. But I think it should show these images to show that there is no limit to what you can do in the world. And even though, like you said, we may look at the show as being supernatural and not reality, there are so many things in our show that are tied to realities. So, being a part of something inspirational like that… there aren’t many shows out there doing that. To me, that’s what I’m most proud of by being attached to Naomi and being in the Naomi family and the DC family.

As far as the personal with the Zumbado character, I think this is some of my best work thus far. I know for a fact that it’s the most fulfilling work that I’ve done, because as the season continues along, we’ll get to see some of the layers peel back from Zumbado, and we’ll get somewhat of an origin story a little bit. We’ll dip into that around midseason. So, it’s just really exciting when you get to play a very well-written, well-layered, complicated character, and that’s how I define him. That’s acting gold for me. And I’m just really proud first and foremost for everyone to see our entire cast and how talented they are, and just the wonderful things that they’re going to bring to the screen. But you know, selfishly, I mean I’m excited for my family, my friends to get to see this work that I’ve been doing. Hopefully people who haven’t seen me other things will enjoy the work and they’ll be interested in kind of seeing more that I have to offer. So, that’s all that I could ask for.

Nerds & Beyond: That is all that I’ve got for you today. Did you have anything else that you wanted to add?

Cranston Johnson: No, I just want to thank you for your time and your interest and consideration in the show. Thank you so much.

Nerds & Beyond: Of course! And thank you as well for sitting down to talk with me. It’s been great hearing what you have to say.

Naomi airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on The CW. Keep up with our recaps and other ongoing coverage here.

‘Scream’: Some Of The Frighteningly Fun Easter Eggs & References In The Fifth Installment

0

This article contains major spoilers for Scream (2022).

The Scream franchise has returned to theaters after eleven years. Scream released exclusively into theaters January 14, 2022 and was brought to screen by an incredible cast and creative team who took special care to make a worthy “requel”, appropriately full of Easter Eggs and references.

Kirby From Scream 4 Is Alive

This is probably the Easter Egg that will receive the most attention from fans, and rightfully so. Following Scream 4‘s release, a common complaint was the supposed slaughtering of Hayden Panettiere’s fan-favorite character Kirby Reed. While fans have spent the last 11 years debating Kirby’s true fate (she was never actually confirmed as dead, just shown being stabbed by Charlie Walker), the debate can now be laid to rest. While Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid) is watching videos on YouTube, on the side of the page the column of suggested videos was incredibly intentional. One of the videos is titled “Interview with Woodsboro Survivor Kirby Reed”, confirming that Kirby did in fact survive. With the success of Scream, hopefully fans are able to see the horror expert in a future installment.

Sidney’s Husband Isn’t A New Face

One of the biggest reveals in Scream (2022) is that Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott is all grown up and finally has a family of her own – a husband and daughters. While conversing with David Arquette’s Dewey Riley about the new string of murders, Sidney mentions her husband by name — Mark. Fans of the franchise will recognize the name Mark from Scream 3, as Detective Mark Kincaid was a main character for the movie.

“A Young Meg Ryan”

In the first Scream, Dewey Riley jokes that he can see Sidney Prescott being played by a young Meg Ryan in the eventual movie-adaptation of her life. While this isn’t a carved out and planned Easter Egg or reference, per se, Meg Ryan’s son Jack Quaid stars in 2022’s Scream as Richie Kirsch. How’s that for a casting coincidence?

“It’s Like Jodie Foster In The Silence of the Lambs

In 2022’s Scream, we see Sam Carpenter hallucinating visions of her real father, Billy Loomis, talking to her and taunting her into unleashing the Loomis inside and going on a stabbing-spree of her own. While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen our final girl hallucinate a dead parent (Sidney has visions of her dead mother in Scream 3), this time there is a definite call-back to the original Scream. In 1996’s Scream, Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis tells Sidney, “It’s like Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs, when she keeps having flashbacks of her dead father.” This line is certainly more ominous now, as twenty-five years later Billy’s own daughter Sam is going through the same thing.

Gale Weathers Aesthetics

Not only does Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers reference how horrible her bangs were in Scream 3, she also continues on the legacy of the brightly colored ensembles, specifically the red suit. Gale is known for wearing various red outfits throughout the franchise, which was thankfully brought back for Scream, wearing a red suit when she returns to Woodsboro to reunite with her husband, Dewey, and cover the new string of murders.

“Red Right Hand” Returns

The song “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was featured in the original trilogy but was notably missing from Scream 4. Thankfully, 2022’s Scream remedied this loss by featuring the song once again during the murder of can’t-take-no-for-an-answer Vince, the nephew of Stu Macher, played by Kyle Gallner. In the scene, Ghostface slips into Vince’s car while Vince pees a wall and turns the song on the radio. While the song may now be more recognizable thanks to Peaky Blinders, it has always felt like the perfect song for Scream‘s tone and it was enjoyable to hear it in the franchise once again.

Rian Johnson

Scream ends up being a commentary on toxic fandom, which is immensely needed in 2022, as you all know if you’ve ever been on the internet. Toxic fandom cannot be mentioned without mentioning the fandom response to Rian Johnson following Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Hilariously, Johnson is mentioned in Scream as being the director for Stab 8, the in-franchise movie that received horrible fan reactions and ultimately leads to Amber and Richie trying to remake the movie themselves.

The Blood Wipe

The signature Ghostface blood wipe from the Buck 120 hunting knife has returned. This became an iconic shot of Ghostface in the original Scream, as both Billy Loomis and Stu Macher wipe the blade in the same fashion after committing their murders. After Sam Carpenter finishes her now very-ex-boyfriend off through multiple stabbings, she stands over his body and wipes the blade in the same fashion.

“With Pleasure!”

If you’re in a Scream movie, you probably don’t want to antagonize whomever is behind the Ghostface mask anymore than you need to. If you’re Sidney Prescott, of course, this doesn’t apply as we originally saw in Scream 2. While Sidney is being taunted on the phone in the sorority house, she taunts the killer to come and get her, to which the masked killer replies “with pleasure”. Now in 2022’s Scream, we see Barrera challenge Ghostface the same way, which is met with the same response Sidney received in Scream 2.

The Stab Franchise Cast List

The Scream franchise has always been incredibly meta. In Scream 2, it is revealed that there is an in-franchise horror movie franchise about the Woodsboro killings and Sidney’s life thanks to Gale Weathers’ book. This franchise-within-a-franchise is called Stab, and as of 2022’s Scream there have been eight Stab movies made, though the eighth was a huge disappointment. The Scream 2022 opening sequence includes Jenna Ortega’s Tara being interrogated over-the-phone in a series of (you guessed it) horror movie related questions. Rather than asking questions about different movies in the genre like past Ghostfaces have done, this iteration of the killer chooses to ask questions only about the original Stab movie.

Stab, which is based on the events of the first Scream movie, features known celebrities playing versions of Sidney, Gale, Dewey, and others characters from the original Woodsboro killings. Ghostface asks Tara who plays Casey Becker in Stab, which prompts Tara to Google the cast list. Before deciding the answer is Heather Graham, Tara scrolled through the cast list, calling back others who appeared in the in-universe Stab franchise like Luke Wilson, David Schwimmer, Tori Spelling, and more. The cast list also shows Gale Weathers as being played by Jennifer Jolie, the fictional actress played by Parker Posey in Scream 3.

The Friend Group Introduction

Following the opening sequence in both 1996’s Scream and 2022’s Scream, we meet the friend group of the movies’ leading lady — in 1996 we were introduced to Billy, Stu, Tatum and Randy while in 2022 we were introduced to Wes, Amber, Chad, Mindy and Liv. Introducing the friend group suspect list isn’t the only similarities these two scenes have — in 1996 we see Tatum and Stu sharing a bag of green grapes between themselves. In 2022, Wes and Amber are sharing a bag of the same fruit while being introduced.

Will Hollywood Ever Stop Setting Mikey Madison On Fire?

No, they will not. Mikey Madison was first set on fire in Quinten Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time … In Hollywood in which she plays a member of the Manson Family, Susan “Susie” Atkins. In the Tarantino film she is set ablaze with a flamethrower, while in Scream she is doused in a flammable substance and pushed onto an ignited gas stove. Nobody can flail around like they’re on fire like Mikey Madison can at this point in Hollywood.

Legacy of Scream (1996)

Tatum Isn’t Forgotten (Finally!)

Rose McGowan’s Tatum Riley from 1996’s Scream is an icon and fans of the franchise still faun over how wonderful of a character she was. Tatum even speaks one of the franchise’s most iconic lines, “Please don’t kill me, Mr. Ghostface, I want to be in the sequel!”. Despite how popular of a character Tatum was following release, Tatum has really not been mentioned or remembered in any meaningful way until now. Thankfully, when we see the interior of Dewey’s mobile home, Dewey appears to have her ashes on his mantle in a lovely memorial to his sister.

Randy Meeks Lives On

As it is established that the victims in this new set of Woodsboro killings are somehow related to the original killings, it’s no surprise that there would be characters related to the original horror nerd Randy Meeks featured in the movie. Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin are members of the main friend group and are the twin niece and nephew of Randy, who tragically died at Ghostface’s hand in Scream 2. Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) even takes after her uncle in her love of horror. Not only are Randy’s niece and nephew present, their home interior shows a plaque on their mantle along with several photos dedicating their living room as the “Randy Meeks Memorial Home Theater”.

These two tributes aren’t enough for Randy, however. In 2022’s Scream third act, Mindy Meeks-Martin is watching Stab, particularly the scene where Randy is watching Halloween and telling the characters in that movie to turn around, failing to take his own advice and realize Ghostface is directly behind him. While this is happening on-screen in Scream, Mindy is shouting at the portrayal of her uncle that he needs to turn around, failing to do so herself as Ghostface creeps up on her in real-life. Thankfully, she realizes her near-fatal mistake before it’s too late and is able to turn around and save herself from being stabbed too badly.

Horror Homages

What’s In A Name?

The most obvious character name that was meant as a loving dedication is Dylan Minnette’s character, Wes Hicks, so received the name Wes in honor of the late Wes Craven. Tara and Sam also pay homage to a horror giant with their last name Carpenter after Halloween creator John Carpenter. Since Billy Loomis is revealed as Sam’s real father, her true last name would be Loomis making her name Sam Loomis, another homage to horror as both Psycho and Halloween have a character named Sam Loomis. Additionally, Mikey Madison’s Amber Freeman receives her name from the wife of James Vanderbilt, one of the Scream writers.

Psycho-esque Shower Scene

Shortly before the deaths of Sheriff Judy Hicks and her son Wes Hicks, Judy receives a call from Ghostface while on her way to pick-up dinner. Ghostface is brutal during this call, promising Judy that her son is going to be dead by the time she returns home and that there’s no way she will make it in-time. During this phone call, Wes is in the shower in a Psycho-esque scene, which Ghostface even points out. Despite building tension thanks to Ghostface’s taunting, Wes ends up not dying in the shower, after all.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Wes Craven wasn’t only the mind behind Scream, he was also behind another famous horror franchise A Nightmare on Elm Street. In the 1996 movie Craven had a cameo appearance as a janitor named Fred, wearing the iconic red-and-green striped sweater. This time around in 2022, there is a quick shot of a street sign while audiences receive a look at the town of Woodsboro. The street name is none other than “Elm Street”.

For Wes

Not only did the late Wes Craven receive a character named after him, there are references to him throughout the entirety of the film. After Wes Hicks is murdered by Ghostface, the school has a wake party to honor his memory, and shots are taken with a cheer of “For Wes!”. Finally, when Sidney enters Stu Macher’s old house in the third act of the movie we see Craven’s signature hat hanging next to the door. At the end of the movie, the screen reads “For Wes” before the credits role, paying one final and touching tribute to the horror giant without whom the Scream franchise wouldn’t be what it is.
