As first reported by Variety, Daniel Brühl has joined the cast of director Lone Scherfig’s upcoming Spanish-language film, The Movie Teller.
Brühl is known for his portrayal of Baron Helmut Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making a comeback in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as well as his leading roles in The Alienist and Rush. The Spanish-German actor, while most often seen in English or German-language roles, is also fluent in Spanish, which can be seen in several of his films, such as Los Pelayos, Eva, and 7 Days in Havana.
He’s set to star alongside Bérénice Bejo and Antonio de la Torre in The Movie Teller, in which he will portray a character named Nansen. After the European outsider earns the respect of the families that he encounters at a Chilean mine, he finds himself in a relationship with a local woman named María Magnolia (portrayed by Bejo).
Sara Becker will play María’s daughter, who is the town’s “movie teller” thanks to her special knack for story-telling. While the town residents cannot afford to go to the movie theater themselves, they raise enough money to send María’s daughter alone so that she can “recount to them the stories she’s seen on screen” and “bring the tales to life” upon her return.
The Movie Teller, which is adapted from Hernán Rivera Letelier’s autobiographical novel, will begin shooting on March 21 in Pedro de Valdivia.
