1923 is set to star Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones). It is written and executive produced by Sheridan who has a growing catalogue of shows on Paramount+ including 1883, Mayor of Kingstown and Lioness.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Review: Must-See Series of the Summer

0

Prime Video released The Summer I Turned Pretty, a 7-episode first season based on the book by Jenny Han, last Friday. Han, who is most well-known as the author of the wildly-popular To All The Boys series, returns with this captivating series.

The series follows Belly, a teenage girl who has spent the summer growing up alongside her Mom’s best friend, Susannah, and her two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly’s brother, Steven, also joins them. However, this summer is different — Belly is all grown up, and the boys are starting to notice.

The story weaves its way through growing up as a teenage girl, discovering boys, and also the affection of the two boys she’s grown up with. Lola Tung, who is a newcomer, is a perfect choice to lead the series. She’s captivating and fun in a way that makes you take the journey along with her and feel for her. Gavin Casalegno, who was previously on The CW’s Walker, is a perfect Jeremiah — he’s sweet and charming, and it’s easy to see why Belly feels drawn to him. Christopher Briney is perfect as the quiet and mysterious Conrad. There’s times where you just want to hate him, but he acts so effortlessly to draw you back into his world and why he’s doing the things he’s doing. Sean Kaufman is so fun as Steven, and you really love getting to watch him and his relationships as well.

Dana Hawley/Prime Video

The writing for the show is incredible. On the surface, you might think it’s a fun, summer love story but the story soon delves so much deeper and instantly has you hooked. What’s really great about the series is that it’s not only the teens who are focused on. The adults all have stories of their own, and their characters are exceptionally fleshed out. Jackie Chung and Rachel Blanchard in particular have such great chemistry as best friends, and Blanchard carries a heavy burden where you can see her struggle throughout the whole season.

All of the friends of the core four are so greatly cast as well. Minnie Mills, Summer Madison, David Iacono, and Rain Spencer each command the screen when they’re on it.

The season is only elevated even further by the fantastic music choices. Taylor Swift’s music appears in multiple episodes, and really gives that summer love feeling. There’s also songs you’ll recognize from trends on TikTok, as well as Olivia Rodrigo.

It’s no surprise that before the series even aired, Prime Video has already renewed it for a season 2, which makes sense considering Han authored multiple books in the series.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a must-watch event of the summer, and one of the best shows of the year. The Summer I Turned Pretty is available to watch now on Prime Video.

After a sold-out, one-night-only show on Friday night of the Governors Ball Music Festival in NYC, Halsey took the stage to deliver an incredibly breathtaking performance.

It was a show filled with emotion and words of encouragement for fans that filled the main stage area. The crowd sang, screamed, climbed others’ shoulders to belt out the lyrics to “Hurricane”, and danced while Halsey’s stage lights lit up the crowd.

It was an incredible night to remember as Halsey concluded the headlining set with “I am not a woman, I’m a god”.

Nikki, one of our staff photographers, was there to capture Halsey’s performance. Check out the photos below!

Pride Month Spotlight: Wylan From Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse

Welcome to the latest installment of our 2022 Pride Month Series! Each day in the month of June, we will be highlighting a different member of the LGBTQIA+ community who we think is a great example of representation and dynamic characterization. We will focus on fictional characters, celebrities, and activists alike — the positive voices within the LGBTQIA+ community and in mainstream media. Today’s spotlight is on a character that hails from author Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse, Wylan.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Grishaverse novels up through ‘Rule of Wolves’.

When Kaz Brekker is presented with the deal of a lifetime from merchant Jan Van Eck in the novel Six of Crows, the leader of the Dregs can hardly turn down the offer. If he can manage to rescue the scientist Bo Yul-Bayur from Fjerda, he’ll be 30 million kruge richer. In order to pull off a statistically impossible heist at one of the most impenetrable places in the world, he’ll need a carefully selected team. The team in question ends up consisting of thief of secrets Inej Ghafa, sharpshooter Jesper Fahey, Grisha Nina Zenik, Fjerdan Matthias Helvar, and, much to the surprise of the others — Wylan Hendriks.

While they’ll no doubt need a demolitions expert on their journey, the young boy with ruddy gold hair wasn’t exactly who the rest of the team was expecting. Kaz is quick to defend his choice, because there’s always a method to Brekker’s madness. He eventually reveals to the others that while the boy may not be on Raske’s demo level, his real name is Wylan Van Eck. Utilizing the estranged son of Jan Van Eck is Kaz’s seemingly foolproof insurance plan to ensure that the payment portion of their mission doesn’t go sideways (although that sentiment … does not age well). Wylan had also been to the Ice Court for an embassy dinner with his father, which meant he could help Matthias create blueprints.

The story behind how Wylan went from his comfortable life as the child of a rich merchant to someone fighting to survive life in the Barrel remained a mystery to the others at first. Inej received conflicting intel about his past, sharing with Jesper that he had perhaps been caught in a sweaty romp with one of his tutors. She also noted that his father wrote to him every week, though Wylan never opened the letters. When Wylan popped up in the slums of Ketterdam, despite going by his mother’s maiden name to disguise his identity, he made his way onto Kaz’s all-seeing radar. Knowing that having a merchant’s son in his back pocket would come in handy, Kaz sent Jesper to the tannery where Wylan was working at to recruit him for the Dregs.

As the Crows began their mission, there was a stark contrast between the hardened survival skills of the others versus Wylan’s soft nature; his hands were born to make art and play music, not to fight.

“They hadn’t even left Ketterdamn, and Wylan already seemed completely out of his depth. He wasn’t much younger than Kaz, but somehow he looked like a child — smooth-skinned, wide-eyed, like a silk-eared puppy in a room full of fighting dogs.”

‘Six of Crows’

Slowly but surely, even with the odds stacked against him, Wylan managed to hold his own and earned his place among the six. Even as early as the ambush on the docks, Jesper was impressed with his quick thinking when Wylan used a flash bomb to save them.

Jesper takes to calling Wylan “merchling,” and despite the exasperated, teasing way that he communicates with him — “Jesper had been stuck somewhere between the desire to taunt the little merchling into another blush and the urge to flirt him into a quiet corner just to see what might happen” — a slow burn steadily blossoms between the two throughout Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. Although they spent plenty of time beating around the bush (what with their lives on the line and such), the attraction between the two was instantly a mutual affair from the moment that they met, with Jesper wanting to kiss him right then and there in the tannery, and Wylan observing the other boy’s “most perfectly shaped lips.”

During the aforementioned incident at the docks, Jesper didn’t think twice about flirting with him in the heat of battle as he called out, “You can’t kiss me from down there, Wylan.” Their ill-timed flirtations continued on throughout the heist, with Jesper often reducing Wylan to a blushing mess with forward comments like, “Stop being dense. You’re cuter when you’re smart.” When they were attempting the nearly impossible tasking of breaking through the chain links for the gate, Jesper suggested, “If only you could talk to girls in equations,” and Wylan’s casual response was, “Just girls?” Jesper internally lamented what a shame it was that they may not make it out of the heist alive as he said, “No. Not just girls” — a casual confirmation of the compatibility of their individual sexualities. This would be brought up again later when Jesper jokingly threatened to tell Matthias that Wylan kissed Nina … and then corrected himself by saying he’d tell Nina that Wylan tried to kiss Matthias.

The true tragedy of Wylan’s character would later be revealed — he hadn’t been kicked out of his house after an illicit affair with his tutor. Rather, Jan Van Eck absolutely despised his son because, despite his intelligence, he was unable to read. One day, he told Wylan that he was sending him away to a music school (for “as long as it takes people to forget I had a son”), but in reality, his father had tricked him; he tried to have him killed on the way there to completely erase him from his life and prevent him from inheriting the Van Eck empire. Wylan narrowly escaped the attempted murder, scraping out a life for himself in the Barrel in the aftermath, and the letters that Van Eck sent him were not sentimental but rather a way of cruelly taunting him.

Jesper and Wylan’s relationship continued to grow stronger throughout Crooked Kingdom. Wylan notably accompanied Jesper to meet with his father, and Jesper then joined Wylan on his shocking visit to his mother’s grave (in which he found out that she was still alive and locked in an asylum, courtesy of Jan Van Eck). Unable to resist his feelings any longer, Jesper finally propositioned Wylan when his emotions were running high after a fight with his father.

Unfortunately, thanks to the fact that Wylan was stuck wearing Kuwei Yul-Bo’s face after Nina’s jurda parem-induced tailoring, Jesper discovered that he had accidentally kissed Kuwei. Wylan was hurt and offended when he found the two of them, but soon after, Genya tailored Wylan to look like himself again, and the two boys finally acted upon their undeniable feelings for one another.

“Jesper’s mind emptied. He wasn’t thinking of what had happened before or what might happen next. There was only the reality of Wylan’s mouth, the press of his lips, then the fine bones of his neck, the silky feels of his curls as Jesper cupped his nape and drew him nearer. This was the kiss he’d been waiting for. It was a gunshot. It was a prairie fire. It was the spin of Makker’s Wheel. Jesper felt the pounding of his heart — or was it Wylan’s? — like a stampede in his chest, and the only thought in his head was a happy, startled, Oh.”

‘Crooked Kingdom’

Although the journey to get there was unforgiving, and not everyone made it out alive, Wylan and Jesper found their happy ending at the end of Crooked Kingdom. Much to the dismay of Jan Van Eck, Wylan inherited everything from his father after all. Jesper told the furious merchant that he would be the one to read to Wylan (to help him in his handling of the estate). When Wylan then asked him if he meant it, if he would really stay with him, Jesper happily obliged. Later, in the second book in the King of Scars duology, Rule of Wolves, Wylan and Jesper are found living a (mostly) peaceful life of domesticity (besides being recruited for yet another mission by Kaz) in the elegant mansion, accompanied by Wylan’s now-free mother as well.

Over the course of the Six of Crows duology, Bardugo takes cares to give each of her characters ample character development inside and out, and Wylan Van Eck is no exception. His story is a gripping, triumphant tale of a boy that survives a painful, unloving upbringing and eventually discovers the found family that he deserves. He finds romantic happiness along the way with Jesper, a person that embraces his “unexpected courage” and “wide-eyed, generous way of looking at the world.” Even when everything else is falling apart around them, the two continuously support one another unconditionally without judgment. And most importantly of all, Wylan grows tremendously as a person as he works alongside the Crows, learning that he’s capable of so much more than Jan Van Eck could ever fathom.

The Grishaverse has been adapted into a Netflix series, Shadow and Bone. The story takes place during Bardugo’s first trilogy, but the timeline was modified to insert the Crows into the mix as well (albeit with a different story). Five of them appeared in season 1, and the upcoming second season will see the long-awaited introduction of Wylan, who will be portrayed by Jack Wolfe. Jesper may have had a brief tumble with a stable hand in the first season (read our show-centric Jesper Pride article from 2021 here), but it’s safe to assume that his thoughts will soon be occupied by someone else entirely when Wylan comes into the picture.

‘Love, Victor’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 8 “Brave”

Well, this is it. We’ve reached the end of Love, Victor. In this final episode, all our characters make major decisions about their lives to lead them into their futures. And in true Simonverse fashion, viewers head back to the winter carnival. Read on to find out what happens in “Brave.”

Big Changes for the Salazars

Victor meets Felix outside, who wishes Victor a happy friendiversary. Victor gifts Felix his pastry which prompts Felix to mention how he misses spending the mornings with the Salazars. Victor tells him they’ll be at the awards ceremony, and Felix can get his fix then. He adds that Nick is going, too, and things with him are going well. Felix shares that Lake came over and is optimistic about where they might be headed. Meanwhile, Victor thinks Benji is in his rear … when he gets a text from Benji about wanting to talk. (Let the record show he meant to say “rearview,” and yes, he knew exactly how it sounded.)

Victor meets Benji at Brasstown. Benji breaks the news that he’s going to a boarding school in Connecticut, which he wasn’t on board with until he saw Victor kissing someone else. He says it’s okay and that seeing Victor move on meant that he probably should too. Benji says maybe they’ll see each other during the holidays before they super awkwardly hug, and Benji leaves.

In other Salazar news, Armando comes home early from work absolutely fuming. He begins anger/stress eating and tells Isabel about how his boss was making homophobic remarks. When Armando asked his boss to stop because Victor is gay, his boss insulted Victor, and Armando cussed him out and then quit. (And good for him!) Isabel takes the information mostly well, but quickly begins stress eating with Armando as they realize what it might mean for them financially.

Mia Breaks the News

Lake tells Mia about Felix, and Mia is confused about where Lake and Felix stand. Lake equates Felix to a cozy sweater when she spots school transfer requests on the counter. Mia tells Lake that she’s moving to Palo Alto. She knows it’s sudden, but Lake understands, and the two promise to FaceTime every day. When Lake asks about Andrew, Mia isn’t sure that long distance could work.

Speaking of Andrew, he meets with Mia at school, excited about the carnival. She breaks the news to him, but he’s not worried; he has it all figured out. Mia keeps trying to emphasize that she doesn’t want it to affect his school or basketball. When he tells her that she’s his future, she disagrees, which leads him to ask if she’s breaking up with him. She doesn’t know, and Andrew is upset that she doesn’t want to fight for them.

The Gay Award

Kelsey McNeal/Hulu

Everyone files into the school’s auditorium for the awards ceremony. Felix spots the Salazars and begins to head towards them but changes his mind when he sees Pilar, opting to sit with Mia and Lake instead (and Felix and Lake are definitely vibing). Rahim joins the Salazars and notices Pilar glaring at Felix. She’s mad that Felix seems to have moved on to Lake despite having just broken up with her. Rahim tries to be supportive but gets distracted when he begins talking about how good-looking Felix is. When he snaps out of it, he says he thought Lake and Lucy were together, and Pilar tells him they’re not.

The ceremony begins, and Victor is the first to receive his award. He acknowledges why he’s really getting it and admits he was hesitant at first until an unnamed friend (aka Rahim, who’s smiling in the audience) helped him out. He shares how he didn’t know any out gay kids when he first moved, but he met a group of people who took him in: a best friend who’s always there for him, a now ex-girlfriend who made him feel safe, and the person he fell in love with. Victor continues that he thought being brave meant not being scared, but actually, it means embracing scary things. He ends his speech by thanking his friends and family.

After the ceremony, Nick finds Victor. Victor is about to tell him something, but Nick beats him to the punch and knows Victor isn’t over Benji. Regardless, Nick is glad he met Victor and wishes him luck. As he walks down the hall, he bumps into Liam, who gets salty until he learns Nick isn’t Victor’s boyfriend anymore. Meanwhile, Victor’s family congratulates him. A few moments later, Victor hands off his award and sprints dramatically down the hall to go take care of something.

Worth Fighting For

Victor goes to see Benji, who is packing up the car with his now annoyed father. Victor begins to tell Benji that he hasn’t moved on and mentions how Benji’s dad went to see him. Benji didn’t know this and gets upset, and his dad gets defensive. Victor agrees with Benji’s dad because he knows he was just trying to protect Benji. However, Victor doesn’t think he’s bad for Benji, and he loves him, and if Benji feels the same, he should stay. Benji is at a loss for words but soon tells Victor that he’s too late.

Elsewhere, Mia goes to Andrew and says she does want to fight for them. She was scared that Andrew would get bored with long distance and break her heart. He assures her that he won’t, but she isn’t so certain. But Andrew is.

Brave

Felix picks up Lake to take her to the carnival. They kiss, and after, Lake tells him that their being together wouldn’t be a brave thing to do even though it would be comfortable. She’s in love with Lucy, though she hasn’t said it out loud yet. So, Lake decides to be brave, and a bit later, she brings Lucy to a condo that her mom owns. Lake says she told her mom about her and Lucy’s situation and that her mom said it would be okay for Lucy to move into the condo. Lake understands if Lucy doesn’t want to, but Lucy interrupts her. She tells Lake how being in Creekwood used to make her sad, but now when she drives past places, she’s reminded of Lake. Lucy tells Lake that she loves her, and Lake says it back before they kiss and head to the carnival.

Full Circle

Gilles Mingasson/Hulu

The Salazars get to the winter carnival, and Isabel and Armando break the news that they are starting their own electrician business. They get caught up in the moment and begin to kiss, much to the extreme dismay of the kids. When they break apart, Isabel wants to take a family photo. As they head off, Felix gets Pilar’s attention. He apologizes for what happened, sharing how the Salazars gave him a safe place. When he realized how much he needed tham and thought he would lose that, he pulled away. He adds that Pilar deserves someone who will put her first and apologizes for not being that someone. He begins to walk away, but Pilar grabs him and drags him into the family photo.

Victor and Felix find Andrew, Mia, Lake, and Lucy. Andrew notices something is wrong with Victor, who tells them about Benji. Lake tries to lighten the mood when Mia’s move comes up again. So, Lake decides they’re going to go play games. Victor needs to do something first, though. He walks through the grounds, spotting Rahim and Connor enjoying themselves and Nick and Liam caught up in conversation. But his final destination is none other than the infamous Ferris wheel. He plans to ride it alone … until Benji shows up.

The two get on, and Benji tells Victor that he had a long talk with his parents. He told them that they’re his trigger, not Victor. Benji continues that he wants to be with Victor. However, he needs to work on himself and isn’t sure how it ends with them. He asks if Victor ever wonders what would’ve happened if they rode the Ferris wheel together when Victor first moved there. Victor says no because that’s not their story. This is, and it’s perfect, and the episode (and show) ends as the two kiss on the top of the Ferris wheel.
