‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 6 “Marigold”

In episode 5, Five located Pogo and Allison has escaped with Harlan to save him from a Sparrow fate after he killed two of their team. Klaus is also discovering the extent of his powers after being resurrected from his accidental death at the hands of Stan and a harpoon gun. Five and Lila found the Commission abandoned and Five watched his 100-year-old self die in an iron lung, cutting a strange tattoo off his chest before returning back to Hotel Obsidian. Read on to see what happened in episode 6, “Marigold!”

Pogo Had to Gogo

Unlike the Umbrellas, the Sparrow Academy is a Pogo-less institution. In a flashback scene, we discover that Pogo left after having an argument with Sir Reginald Hargreeves about his intentions for the children he’d become so fond of after watching a sparring match between Ben and Jayme. It’s clear Reggie has had an ulterior motive for the superpowered kids all along, something about “the other side.” We just don’t know what… After the disagreement, Reggie kicks Pogo out of the Academy permanently.

Back in the present day, Five tries to jog Pogo’s memory of their meeting in the 60s to no avail and follows him back to his camper in the woods.

There, he finally gets Pogo’s attention when he reveals the tattoo he cut off of his older self back at the Commission. Pogo recognizes his work and the meaning of the sigils. Project Oblivion, the words jogging Five’s memory of his dying 100-year-old self uttering the same word.

The pills Klaus has now weaned Reggie off of were from Pogo, a method of keeping the Sparrows safe from Reggie’s Oblivion kamikaze mission. Pogo warns Five that if Project Oblivion has restarted, it means danger for everyone. And Five takes his first step towards his destiny, getting the sigil tattooed onto his chest.

Freeing Harlan Once and For All

Viktor meets Harlan and Allison at the drive-in theater and the two begin to strategize how they can rid Harlan of Viktor’s gifted powers. Harlan has a much better grasp over his powers than Viktor does, explaining to him that it’s all about sound. He just needs to listen to the energy waves — every living thing has a distinct sound — and not the sounds that everyone else can hear. As Harlan tries to help Viktor see the extent of his powers, it’s not going well and Allison steps in, her own powers not able to breach the energy field surrounding the pair. That is until she also finds an entirely new level of strength as she’s brought into the energy field, knocking Harlan to the ground using her voice alone without even needing to utter her classic “I heard a rumor.”

Harlan details to Viktor what it was like growing up with this power he couldn’t control, naming it Marigold, and challenges Viktor to not listen with his ears, but his own Marigold. With the help of Harlan’s trusty headphones, he finally begins to understand what Harlan means.

Meanwhile, Allison is hallucinating Ray. Thankfully, she knows it’s a hallucination but it’s not making it any easier. She knows that her Ray died nine years ago, but she still details to him the pain she feels from losing both him and Claire until she notices the effects of Harlan and Viktor as the world goes dark, electricity crackling in the background.

Harlan and Viktor are in the air, energy swirling around them, and Viktor finally completes his task and removes the power from Harlan, freeing him from the prison he’d put him in. As Viktor recovers, Harlan makes the mistake of telling Allison the truth about their mothers — that he accidentally killed them — setting Allison off. He’s the reason Claire doesn’t exist and the world is ending.

That’s all the motivation Allison needs to kill Harlan to appease the Sparrows, bringing his body to their door, Luther in his new red suit standing outside with the Sparrow team.

Where’s Stan?

In a shock to no one, Diego and Lila have misplaced their child and worry he might have been Kugelblitzed. A trail of Slim Jim wrappers leads Diego to a secret door in the White Buffalo Suite, a light tunnel of light behind it. The two venture after him and find themselves in White Buffalo Suite … with a twist. Everything in the room is the backside of the one they’ve just left, including the buffalo … its rear end now sticking straight out at them. And Diego never forgets an ass, so this is definitely a different place.

When they get down to the lobby that looks exactly the same as the one they’re used to, they discover they’re in Hotel Oblivion, and ringing the bell on the desk is strictly not allowed. Then, Lila reveals the truth. Stan is not their son. He’s the son of a friend and technically she kind of kidnapped him.

As Diego tries to leave the hotel through the revolving door, he ends up right back inside. Something is definitely off about this place. So Diego, in all his well-thought-out glory, rings the bell that was explicitly stated should not be rung. A gong echoes, everything goes eerie and dark, and then they hear a chain clanging. It’s a very large armored man with a scythe who takes two of Diego’s fingers as a souvenir before the pair can escape back down the mystery tunnel. Thankfully, the two keep it from crossing over into Hotel Obsidian’s White Buffalo Suite and then Stan walks in with a Slim Jim and slushy only to be obliterated by the Kugelblitz right before Diego and Lila’s eyes.

Sparrow Family Meeting +1

Despite their best attempts to hide it, the Sparrows know they have a guest. Fei busts Sloane and Luther thanks to their shared wall and Sloane’s squeaky bed and invites Luther down to the family meeting called by Ben.

Luther finally explains why the Umbrellas are so obsessed with Sparrow Ben, citing a Jennifer incident as the source of their Ben’s demise, and that it’s just because they all miss Ben. Their Ben. Their Ben who was the exact opposite of the Ben sitting before him. Luther hopes that maybe some of Umbrella Ben is still lurking beneath Sparrow Ben’s rough exterior.

Then, he offers Luther a spot on the Sparrows, a shiny new red uniform and all. A plan of Ben’s that was not run by Fei and she’s none too pleased.

Klaus and Reggie, an Unlikely Duo of Chaos

The White Buffalo Suite has left Klaus back to Reggie, who has a painting of a white buffalo above the mantle in his office. He knows it must all be connected. Klaus wants help discovering more about who he is and why his own Reggie treated him the way that he did.

Step one of their work together? Killing Klaus … again.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Review: An Emotionally Satisfying Missing Chapter

Lucasfilm’s six-part series Obi-Wan Kenobi has come to an end, closing yet another chapter in the ever-expanding Star Wars live-action universe. Set 10 years after the harrowing events of Revenge of the Sith, the show serves as a much-needed, necessary bridge for the gap of time leading up to A New Hope. It’s equal parts entertaining and nostalgic, and it’s a brilliant tribute to the everlasting mark that Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen left on the franchise so many years ago.

Warning: This review contains spoilers.

Nearly two decades have passed since McGregor last donned the robes of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it’s important to acknowledge that his continued portrayal of one of the most iconic Star Wars characters to ever exist goes far beyond that of fan service. A seasoned actor that has left his mark on Hollywood time and time again, McGregor confidently carries the show as its titular star and brings his character back to life with determination and grace as he channels both the spirit of his prequel trilogy performance and the legacy of the original portrayal by Alec Guinness. Beyond the lightsaber battles and the blaster fire, Obi-Wan Kenobi is also an exceptional character study of the fractured, broken man that he was reduced to in the wake of Revenge of the Sith, which McGregor conveyed with heartbreaking honesty.

Like two halves of a whole, the return of Christensen alongside McGregor played a crucial part in the show’s draw and success as well. It was common knowledge that Christensen was poised to make a comeback, but little was said on the full extent of his role, which made the Attack of the Clones era flashback one of the show’s best surprises. Meanwhile, the raw and terrifying conversation he has with Obi-Wan in the finale after their intense battle — dangerously toeing the line between Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker through his cracked helmet with a damaged voice modulator, bathed in blue and red light — is the pinnacle of a series climax.

Lucasfilm

Obi-Wan Kenobi introduces an array of intriguing new characters to the Star Wars universe, namely Indira Varma’s brave and driven Tala and Moses Ingram’s ruthless Inquisitor Reva. Tala’s fate is a particular shame, because Varma fits right in within the world of Star Wars and would do well in a larger role. The most standout newcomer by far though was Vivien Lyra Blair, who took on the enormous responsibility of portraying Princess Leia at the young age of 10 in a role that was pivotal to the entire show’s story from start to finish. Conveying the personality of a spirited, fearless child wise far beyond her years, Blair’s acting is an impressive tribute to both Carrie Fisher’s Leia and Natalie Portman’s Padmé Amidala. Further to that, the way she’s written helps to elaborate on how she came to be the beloved character audiences were first introduced to in the original trilogy.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is undoubtedly a love letter to the Star Wars prequel trilogy, one that serves to breathe new life and appreciation into the story of the rise and fall of a Jedi Master and his Padawan. The script is adorned with an array of clever, sentimental, and riveting parallels to various facets of the franchise as a whole, like when Vader ruthlessly drops Obi-Wan into a wall of fire, forcing him to recover from his burns in a bacta tank afterward. While the recent sequel trilogy’s films didn’t shy away from dutiful nods either, these words and moments pack a far heavier punch here. And of course, the show’s best kept secret of all arrived at the very end in the form of an appearance from Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn’s Force ghost.

The show has repeatedly been touted as a special event series, rather than a multi-season affair. As a standalone, Obi-Wan Kenobi is an emotionally satisfying and crucial missing chapter to a story that serves as the backbone to Star Wars as a whole. However, given the relatively short amount of time that passed between the premiere and the finale, on top of the narrow scope of the overall plot, plenty of potential storytelling avenues still remain open should Lucasfilm decide to pursue another season. Further episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi could both serve to continue to flesh out the mysterious lost years of the Jedi Master while also opening up opportunities to explore more untold facets of the Star Wars universe. Whatever the future holds, let us hope that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of these characters and the actors that have brought them to life.

All six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Catch up on all of our coverage on the series, including episodic recaps and more.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 5 “Kindest Cut”

In the fifth episode of the third season of The Umbrella Academy, “Kindest Cut,” further depths of Klaus’ abilities are revealed, Harlan explains the tragedy he caused, Five and Lila return from their trip to the Commission, and the Umbrellas and the Sparrows each try to figure out what they’re going to do next with the Kugelblitz looming over them.

Actual-death experiences

Following his accidental death at the hands of Diego’s son, Stan, Klaus wakes up in the Void. He walks to a beach and enters a mausoleum. A younger version of himself is sitting slumped against the wall, and Reginald kneels down beside him, carrying on with his tests. Klaus finds himself back in a memory from his teenage years, in which he fell off of a roof, and then he sees Stan shoot him again. He realizes that these weren’t near-death experiences — he actually died. After he steps out of the mausoleum, Klaus finds his mother sitting at a table on the beach. She remarks that he’s died 56 times now, and she assures him that he doesn’t need to continue mourning her.

Harlan’s mistake

Following the devastating news that Harlan is the one that killed the Umbrella Academy’s mothers, Viktor chases after Harlan and demands to know the truth. It was an accident. On the day that Sissy died, Harlan felt Viktor again, so he reached out … but it wasn’t Viktor. He had connected to the mothers, who were currently terrified because they could feel something growing inside of their bodies. Harlan tried to break the connection, but he couldn’t. After that day, he hid himself away … until now, when he felt Viktor’s powers again.

Reconvening and resurrection

Viktor, Luther, Diego, and Allison meet in the lobby (the latter two looking a bit rough around the edges after their wild night of bar fighting), and Five and Lila come tumbling back after their trip to the Commission. Allison realizes that they have the briefcase, but it doesn’t appear to have survived the trip back. Lila hugs Diego, realizing that there’s no time for her to hold grudges any longer. Diego spots Stan sneaking by the lobby with his arms full of supplies, and he follows him back to the White Buffalo Suite, where his son shows him Klaus’ dead body on the carpet; he was going to use the chemicals to dissolve it.

Putting their heads together for a brilliant solution, Diego and Stan roll Klaus’ body up in the carpet and lug him down the hallway and into the elevator. The concierge barely bats an eye. Shortly after the elevator begins to move, Klaus comes gasping back to life, and Diego and Stan promptly lose their minds.

The Sparrows plot their next move

In the wake of the deaths of Jayme and Alphonso at Hotel Obsidian, Fei and Ben argue over what their next move will be. Fei wants to work together with the Umbrellas to solve their growing problem in the basement — because people all over the world are disappearing now — but Ben is more concerned with punishing Harlan first. Together, they join Grace in the basement and stand before the Kugelblitz, and they use her eye in an attempt to inspect it closer.

The Kugelblitz grows

The Umbrellas sit at the hotel bar and discuss the Kugelblitz, which Five describes as the end of everything. Their best plan would be to go back in time and eliminate the paradox, but it’s not possible considering the briefcase is kaput. Five doesn’t want to risk using his powers to fix things, because we all know what happened last time he tried that. Another wave from the Kugelblitz comes crashing through, taking more innocent lives, and Five calculates that they have 4 to 5 days left until — you guessed it — the end of the world. They debate what to do about the Sparrows and Harlan, and Klaus finally takes it upon himself to mention the “big, bad, glow-y thing” in the basement of the Academy. So at least they know where the Kugelblitz is.

Viktor heads upstairs to talk to Harlan, and Diego and Lila send Stan off as they finally start to rekindle their relationship (not realizing that an odd, glowing door has opened up in the White Buffalo Suite). Meanwhile, Luther and Allison have a chat. They embrace, and Allison is under the assumption that Luther still wants her, but that’s not the case at all. Angry that he’s leaving to go after Sloane, she uses her powers and compels him to kiss her. Later, Allison catches Viktor sneaking Harlan out of the hotel. He wants to try to take back his powers so he can save him, and Allison agrees to help.

The Mothers of Agony

Netflix

Klaus and Five are still sitting in the lobby, and when Five shows him the tattoo that he cut off of his older self, Klaus tells him that it’s a symbol for a biker gang: the Mothers of Agony. Five immediately heads to the bar where the gang is located, and in the back room he finds none other than Pogo.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 4 “Kugelblitz”

In the fourth episode of the third season of The Umbrella Academy, “Kugelblitz,” Sloane spends some time with the Umbrellas, Five and Lila find the last thing they were expecting at the Commission, Klaus has an unfortunate incident, and the full story of Harlan is revealed.

Sissy and Harlan

We open with a flashback to when Sissy was driving away with Harlan at the end of season 2. They escape and find a new home, and Sissy seems to have found happiness with another woman. However, things turn sour when Harlan accidentally kills his pet rabbit with his powers, and they leave town. Harlan is bullied at his new school, and his powers go off again, hitting all of the kids surrounding him. While he was growing up, Sissy had to constantly move Harlan from town to town. Eventually, she passes away in the hospital on October 1, 1989. Harlan stands at her bedside, stricken with grief, and energy bursts from his chest as his powers go haywire.

The aftermath

Sloane wakes up on the floor at Hotel Obsidian, and she runs off when she sees what happened to Jayme and Alphonso. Sloane runs off, and when Luther finds her, she attacks him, convinced that he set her up. Diego and Allison intervene. Allison uses her powers on Sloane to force her to tell them where the briefcase is, and they learn that the Sparrows didn’t have it after all. Meanwhile, Viktor follows Harlan, who remarks that he hasn’t aged at all — which would make sense, considering it’s only been three days for Viktor since he saw Harlan. The older man explains that ever since Viktor saved him at the lake, he can hear people with powers … like a tuning fork. He explains that he doesn’t have control over his powers, though.

A strange discovery at the Commission

Five and Lila walk inside of the Commission to find that it’s been ravaged by the effects of the Grandfather Paradox. After Five finds a recording of what happened just before the timeline collapse, Lila brings him the master handbook in hopes that they can find some information inside of it. They make their way over to the operations bunker, and Five is suddenly very itchy and farting uncontrollably. Oddly enough, the bunker denies Lila’s biometric scan, but it accepts Five’s. They enter the room, which is mostly empty besides an old man laying inside of a chamber resembling an iron lung. Five realizes that the man is him; he’s the one who founded the Commission (and Lila is beyond amused). The room is paradox proof, which is why his paradox psychosis stopped once they entered. The older version of Five tells them that they must be there because of a Kugelblitz. If so, there’s no way to fix it, and all that will be left … is oblivion. He releases himself from the chamber to show the young Five what he has to look forward to, and he instructs him not to save the world. The old man dies, and Five cuts off the strange symbol tattooed on his chest.

It was Stan … in the White Buffalo Suite … with the spear gun

Netflix

Diego brushes Klaus off when he tries to tell him about the “blinding orb of light” that he found in the Academy basement, and he tells “Uncle Klaus” that he’s babysitting Stan while he cleans the hotel in payment for destroying the lobby with a Molotov cocktail. The pair makes their way through the rooms, cleaning cart in tow as they dig into some heart-to-heart therapy while Stan tries to steal everything in sight. They find an intriguing room that’s not on the list, the White Buffalo Suite, and they break into it, mesmerized by its odd décor. Unfortunately, the fun and games end when Stan accidentally shoots Klaus right through the chest with a spear gun.

Diego and Allison’s night out

Allison is still keyed up over everything that she’s been through, so Diego takes her out for a drive and tries to get her to talk about what’s bothering her. Knowing that she’s in the mood for a fight, he parks in front of a rowdy looking bar with a Confederate flag hanging outside of it. A place that the two of them likely won’t be very welcome. It’s time to have some fun.

The Sparrows’ demands

In a turn of events, Sloane accuses Luther of using her to get information, but he’s able to convince her otherwise. Sloane joins Luther, Diego, Allison, and Viktor for a meeting in the lobby, and they debate what to do about Sloane and Harlan. Eventually, they agree to return Sloane to the Sparrow Academy, but in return, Ben demands that they hand over Harlan.

A dark secret

Harlan goes looking for Viktor, and he comes across the newspaper clippings with the Umbrellas’ mothers. He demands to know why Viktor has them. We flash back to Harlan’s meltdown after his mother died, and we learn that Harlan’s outpouring of power is what killed them all.

Pride Month Spotlight: Carina DeLuca From ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 19’

Welcome to the latest installment of our 2022 Pride Month Series! Each weekday in the month of June, we will be highlighting a different member of the LGBTQIA+ community who we think is a great example of representation and dynamic characterization. We will focus on fictional characters, celebrities, and activists alike — the positive voices within the LGBTQIA+ community and in mainstream media. Today’s spotlight is on Carina DeLuca, the Italian OB/GYN attending at Grey Sloan Memorial in Grey’s Anatomy and spin-off, Station 19.

First introduced in season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy, Carina (portrayed by Stefania Spampinato) quickly became a fan-favorite. Audiences adored her witty personality, matched with her eccentric characteristics and female empowerment. And when she started appearing on Station 19 beginning in season 3, it was clear her heart caught the eye of firefighter Maya Bishop, whom we spotlighted last year. The two together are a force to be reckoned with, especially when it comes to supporting one another. Carina has gone through a lot in the years she’s been on the shows, but she has also done a lot to not give up, and it’s why she’s being highlighted.

ABC/Craig Sjodin

Fans were first introduced to Carina in season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy, and they immediately fell for her charm, wit, and personality. After finding out that her little brother, Andrew, was working for a female Chief of Surgery, Carina came to Seattle to meet with Miranda Bailey about doing research about the female orgasm at Grey Sloan. While it seemed like Carina wasn’t going to be on for very long, she caught the eyes of several doctors and has remained on since.

One thing that stands out about Carina is how much she cares about others, specifically her baby brother. Carina and Andrew’s relationship is like your typical sibling relationship. They loved each other, were embarrassed by one another, were proud of each other, and just wanted the best for their sibling.

Carina offered Andrew to stay with her after breaking up with Sam Bello, even if that meant walking in on her and Arizona. When he had a mental breakdown, all Carina wanted was to be there for him. Andrew’s mental stability was not good at one point, and both of them were afraid he was going to end up like their father, who was not a good man. But Carina never once gave up on him, and she had the support that she needed to help him.

Raymond Liu/ABC

Someone else that will always have Carina’s heart is her wife, firefighter Maya Bishop. The two first met in the third season of Station 19 at a bar. The relationship started off as nothing, mostly just as a hookup here and there. They eventually realize that they both want to take things further, and to do so, they vacation together. Throughout their relationship, Carina is always there for Maya when she needs her. Even when they get into fights, Carina is still waiting for Maya to come back. However, after Maya admits to Carina she slept with Jack, Carina reluctantly tells Maya she loves her. This new relationship was new territory for the both of them, and it shows how supportive and understanding they are of each other.

Last season on Station 19, the couple took their relationship a bit further. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Marina had been struggling with social distancing. Barely seeing each other was getting to them, with Carina being at the hospital and Maya at the fire station on the frontlines. After talking it out, Maya suggests Carina move in with her to make things easier on the both of them.

Christopher Willard/ABC

Just episodes later, things took a turn for the worse. Throughout season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy, Andrew’s mental health was declining. He was getting more agitated and bipolar. It was a tough time for Carina because she wanted to be there for him; she just wanted to help him even if he didn’t necessarily want the help. It took some time, but Andrew got the help he needed, and Carina could finally breathe again while also keeping a lookout for her little brother.

Soon, things changed. After the DeLuca siblings tracked down a woman who Andrew was positive was responsible for sex trafficking, he gets stabbed. Despite the efforts at Grey Sloan, Andrew later dies. Maya takes time off from work to be there for Carina. She is in constant pain and agony, as if a part of her died along with her brother.

The aftermath of Andrew’s death was heartbreaking. He and Carina were as close as ever, and it’s like nothing was the same after it. Even now, Carina still feels that heartache, as most people do when they have to say goodbye to a loved one. But it’s because of Maya that she’s able to get through everything. Not long after Andrew’s death, she reveals she may go back to Italy since her visa’s expiring. While Maya offers to go with her, Carina does end up going by herself since Maya realized she can’t leave the station. They both don’t want Carina to leave, and when Maya brings up the idea of marriage, Carina admits she doesn’t believe in it due to what her parents went through.

Thankfully, on the way to the airport, Carina talks with a friend back home, making her realize that she really does love Maya and would do anything to be with her. She meets Maya and Andy at the hospital and proposes to Maya. The pandemic and Andrew’s death only brought them closer together. Although things were a bit bumpy for them this past season, it was well worth it.

ABC/Craig Sjodin

During this current fifth season of Station 19, Carina and Maya have had the chance to discuss expanding their family. While at first Maya wasn’t on board with having kids and Carina wanted it, Maya gave in after spending some time with Dean’s daughter, Pru. Their journey to finding a sperm donor was not an easy one. Carina and Maya both want very specific things for their sperm donor and it nearly tears them apart. However, after Jack brings up to Carina that he could be the sperm donor, things take a different turn.

Here they have someone they know, they can trust, but with Maya’s history with Jack and Carina not being his biggest fan, it was unclear where it would go. After coming to multiple dead ends with a sperm donor, Carina and Maya talk to Jack about really being the donor and the three start to work towards making it happen. Things got a bit bumpy towards the end of the season, as Carina’s hormones were starting to get to her and after it was found out that Jack has a brother, Carina was feeling even worse, missing her brother.

This last year has not been easy for Carina, not in the slightest. Or, even her entire life hasn’t been easy. Losing her brother, struggling with getting deported, having problems with her marriage, it does a number on you. However, the last few episodes of season 5 of Station 19 brought some light to her life. Things turned around with Maya and Jack, and the three started to work towards bringing a baby into the world. And in the season finale, Carina was able to get her green card.

Carina DeLuca is an empowered female doctor who cares so much about her patients, her friends, and her family. While she may not have had the greatest life growing up, she has the best one now, and it’s all because of who she is sharing that life with. Maya brings out the best in her and they are always there for each other in the worst times, even if it seems like they can’t really help. Seeing how Carina and Maya grow stronger in season 6 will surely be something to look forward to, and how Carina will deal with even more challenges that will probably come along with having a baby. If anyone can do it, she can.
