Pride Month: A Farewell and a Thank You

0

Hello, Nerds and Beyond reader!
As Pride Month 2018 comes to a close, I wanted to take today to speak about the past month, our spotlight choices and most of all, say thank you.

I should probably start by introducing myself. My name is Emily, and I have been the woman behind the rainbow curtain. In late May, I decided to take on this Pride project – to produce a series of articles featuring a different LGBTQ+ character every day. Many members of the Nerds and Beyond staff joined me in writing about their favorite characters, and each day (except one, I blame time zones and international travel) I assisted in the editing, scheduling, and graphic design for the articles. And it has been an absolute pleasure.

I have loved working with our staff and I have loved seeing everyone’s reactions – including some famous faces! Thank you for giving me, and us, the platform to be proud and celebrate Pride.

I know that the series mainly featured gay, lesbian and bisexual white characters. While we had a few articles featuring ace, pan and trans characters, as well as some queer people of color, I know it was not enough. I want to explain some of our restrictions as well as apologize.

Our articles were limited to the characters we know and media we consume, which admittedly may not be as diverse as it should be. Additionally, queer representation is limited through media. For example, Todd Chavez was one of only a handful of characters to be canonically asexual on television, and many trans characters are not played by trans actors, which we did not want to represent here. In a study completed by GLAAD, in 2017, out of 902 characters on primetime scripted broadcast television, only 58 (6.4%) were queer. Of those 58, 97% of them were gay, lesbian or bisexual, and only 36% were people of color.

We recognize, and are frustrated by, this lack of representation. We can only look forward to next year’s Pride, where we can hopefully show even more diversity as new characters are written every day.

Finally, thank you. Thank you to everyone who read our Pride articles, or liked them on Twitter, or shared them with a friend. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this wonderful month, and we look forward to putting out more content for you as the rest of the year continues – including a very special interview “coming out” tomorrow!

Misha Collins Promotes GISH – Join the Hunt Now!

Misha Collins, founder of the international scavenger hunt formerly known as GISHWHES, posted a video Friday morning discussing the upcoming hunt.

“Lately I’ve been noticing that I’ve been having a harder time than usual talking about the Hunt, the upcoming annual scavenger hunt that I run, formerly known as GISHWHES, now known as GISH,” Collins said in the video.

Collins has been very politically vocal on his social media accounts, and he addresses in the video “that with the current state of the world with so much scary hateful divisive rhetoric circulating, that it’s hard to talk about the game that [he puts] on and feel like it should be what [he] should be talking about.”

“Then it occurred to me that this thing that we do, this GISH, is really a force for good in the world,” Collins said.

Through GISH, which underwent a revamp this year with the addition of the free GISH app and a brand-new name and logo, participants have rescued Syrian refugee families, funded a dance school in South Africa, provided a home for a veteran who lost his legs, saved endangered species in the Nepalese rainforest, funded a children’s center in Haiti, and helped countless others in their local communities and around the world.

“So what we’re doing is important and it’s fun,” Collins said. “It’s bringing a little light and a little joy into our lives this summer, but it’s also spreading good and doing good in a way that I think is important.”

Watch Collins’ full message below:

The hunt begins on July 28 and runs through August 4. You can register on the website or in the GISH app, and you can invite up to 14 people to join your team, or join an already existing team. If you don’t have a team by the time the hunt begins, you’ll be matched with others to play.

Can’t afford to play? You can apply for a Gisholarship, which are randomly and anonymously dispersed at the end of registration. If you wish to donate to the Gisholarship fund, you may do so here.

The winning team earns a trip to New Zealand with Collins. Past trips have included castles in Croatia, Viking adventures in Vancouver, volcanoes in Hawaii, and treks in Iceland. Also in past years, some of the wackier and more creative entries have been collected into a coffee table book, available for purchase in the annual Shwag Shwop. Other prizes and awards are laid out here.

Sign up today for one of the most life-changing experiences you will ever have.

David Haydn-Jones Launches “<3 = Love" Campaign

David Haydn-Jones (Arthur Ketch, Supernatural) released the second wave of his “<3 = Love” campaign today on Represent.

The new design is similar to last year’s, although this time around the dominating color scheme is purple instead of red. Like last year, a portion of the proceeds will be going to The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. According to Haydn-Jones, the first “<3 = Love” campaign sold 569 units and raised more than $2,500!

The new design is available on all kinds of merch, including t-shirts, hoodies, baseball shirts, hats and tote bags!

In case you missed out on the original design, Haydn-Jones has re-released the red design as well, which is available on t-shirts and hoodies.

Some fans have set up a matching program, so if the merchandise is out of your budget or you’re able to donate something to a fellow fan, you can go here and see about signing up for the program!

Make sure to check out the rest of the merch and support a good cause by purchasing something from the “<3 = Love” campaign here!

Pride Month Character Spotlight: Detective Rosa Diaz

0

Welcome to the twenty-eigth article in our Pride series for the month of June! Each day we will be highlighting a different LGBTQ+ character who we think is a great example of representation, dynamic characterization, and overall badassery. Check out the rest of the series here.

When the words “I’m bi” fell out of Rosa’s mouth, my heart stopped.

Until then, I had never heard a character (or a person for that matter) just come out and say it. Not without derision or weird curiosity or hints or some long drawn out speech apologizing for or explaining their sexual identity.

Just two words and tears (mine).

Detective Rosa Diaz, for those who don’t know, is one of the lead characters in the ensemble workplace comedy Brooklyn 99, played by the wonderfully talented Stephanie Beatriz. She is tough as nails with a take-no-crap attitude and a soft spot for the people she loves. She would sooner pull a knife than discuss feelings (much like another plaid-wearing character I know and love). She is intensely private, even going so far as renting her apartments through false identities and shell corporations, which makes the reveal about her sexuality all the more important, not just for bisexual characters in media but for the character herself.

Beatriz, who came out as bisexual in 2016, spoke to Variety last year about the decision to write Rosa as bisexual, the actress “(jumping) at the chance to offer teenagers and young adults a positive example of a bisexual character”:

I was so excited about it because as somebody who identifies as bi — queer — I just had nothing like that when I was growing up….The gay characters I can remember were most often stereotypes. Even a show like ‘Friends,’ you watch back, and you’re like, ‘Ooh, I can’t believe that’s the choice they made.’ And as someone who’s bi, you have absolutely nothing — no representation at all. And to be able to try to do something like that on our show and have a character come out as bi was really important for me.

Bisexuality is underrepresented in media. According to GLAAD’s 2016-17 report Where We Are on TV, “of the 278 regular and recurring LGBTQ characters on scripted broadcast, cable, and streaming programming, 83 (30 percent) are counted as bisexual.” Also according to GLAAD, bisexuals can’t seem to shake one damaging trope: that of the “duplicitous manipulator,” especially when it comes to bisexual females.

“Too often, creators overwhelmingly choose to portray bisexuality as a villainous trait rather than a lived identity,” said GLAAD’s Senior Strategist, Global and U.S. South, and bisexual advocate Alexandra Bolles in the report. “This trend of inaccurate portrayals undermines how people understand bisexuality, which has real life consequences for bi people and their wellbeing.”

Beatriz addressed that herself to Variety, asking “what does that mean for a 12, 13-year-old watching television and consuming media, and thinking, ‘Well who am I then? I guess I’m not this thing because I’m not a villain, I don’t want to be hypersexualized, I want what everybody wants, to live happy and well.”

Rosa (Beatriz) upon seeing a beautiful female Uber driver.

Executive producer Dan Goor also stated in the article that the Brooklyn 99 writers wanted to reflect how different it is for someone who is bisexual to come out to their friends and family versus someone who is gay.

And it is.

Bisexuality has often been synonymous with indecisiveness, and can be dismissed based upon the gender of the person’s partner rather than being seen as a valid identity. It, like other non-heterosexual identities, has also been dismissed as simply a “phase.”

Brooklyn 99 addresses these misconceptions in the episode where Rosa decides to come out to her parents, who both dismiss her sexuality as a phase and claim that even though she says she’s bi, she’ll eventually choose and marry a man to have a family. While her father appears to have come around, the jury’s still out on Rosa’s mother, a storyline that hopefully will be revisited when the series comes back for a sixth season on NBC.

Rosa (Beatriz) playing family Pictionary, drawing a gay wedding as she tries to help her family understand her sexuality.

Rosa, and Beatriz, are blazing a trail, one of acceptance, and realistic and positive representation. Like her captain and other LGBT lead character Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), Rosa is written as more than just her sexual identity, showing us that sexuality isn’t all that you are, a fact further driven home by the fact that she was not initially written as a bisexual character.

She also shows us the sheer power of a label, and how scary it is to apply that label to yourself and share that with others, especially your loved ones. She inspires people to own their sexual identities, and realize that personal acceptance is just as important as societal acceptance.

Own who you are. Just like Rosa.

Review: The Edison at Disney Springs!

Welcome to the Edison! This restaurant is a new spot to time travel back to the time of Thomas Edison in his prime. It will  will blow you away and you won’t be disappointed! Let’s jump right in!

Atmosphere:

This theme of the restaurant is very 1920’s-30’s. You will wine and dine in Edison’s factory workshop and inside is beautiful and very classy. There are projectors and screens showing clips from his era of inventing (old movies, cartoons) for you to enjoy as you eat your meal. If you enjoy jazz music, this is the place for you! Bars are available on both floors depending on where you are seated. On top of that, there are special members of the restaurant  dressed in a steampunk type costume who come around to greet guests and teach you all about science! But wait there’s more! They have people on stilts that greet guests when they come in!  Do you like your picture taken? Don’t worry because they have that covered too

FUN FACT:

As our favorite steampunk character came around, he taught us about polarity and the Earth’s atmosphere. If for whatever reason the Earth loses polarity, everyone on Earth would instantaneously blast into SPACE!

Food:

”Caesar Romaine”

This salad is what you might find at many restaurants but at The Edison, this specific salad has some surprises. First of all, the dressing for the Caesar was lighter and not as creamy and unique sourdough croutons with shaved Parmesan. The salad was absolutely delicious and a great way to start out a meal.

“Fried Calamari“

Now I know what you’re thinking. Calamari (squid) doesn’t sound all that appetizing. If, however, you like calamari, it is fried incredibly at The Edison. It’s not rubbery and it is just crunchy enough for you to enjoy. It looks similar to onion rings but tastes delightful.

“Prime Rib”

This entree I didn’t have the pleasure of trying but from what I’ve heard from guests, it melts in your mouth and is to die for! No steak sauce necessary because it is amaizng all on its own! Definitely recommended for those who enjoy steak or prime rib. You won’t be disappointed!

“The Edison Burger“

For this meal, again I got input from other guests and the burger was cooked to medium with 100% accuracy. Perfectly pink inside with flavorful bacon and whatever sandwich toppings you desire that is given per the menu. So tasteful!

“Creamy Mash“

One of my favorite parts of the night was tasting this amazing creamy mashed potatoes. The butter melted right on my tongue as I took my first bite. It was the best mashed potatoes I have ever tasted! It was served in a silver pot to keep it nice and warm!

The names of the items on the menu are after some of Edison’s work (called Catalog of Parts)! I love the creativity this restaurant provides!

Service:

I never have had any issues with Disney dining wait staff. They are always friendly and very on top of it with drinks and refills. The Waiters/Waitresses are dressed in suspenders and bow tie which looks as though they might work in the factory. Even the Hostesses wear show girl type dresses as guests enter the establishment.

Another two Mickey thumbs up for this restaurant! I will definitely be visiting again but make your reservations ASAP as this newly opened location will be difficult to obtain. Don’t miss it!!

Pride Month Character Spotlight: Blanca Rodriguez

0
Mj Rodriguez as Blanca Rodriguez

Welcome to the twenty-seventh article in our Pride series for the month of June! Each day we will be highlighting a different LGBTQ+ character who we think is a great example of representation, dynamic characterization, and overall badassery. Check out the rest of the series here.

Pose is an exciting new series on FX that is centered around the drag ball culture of the late 1980s. The show is set in New York City in 1987 and gives us a peek into a segment of LGBTQ+ culture that, by and large, has been absent from our screens (although Madonna’s “Vogue” video brought drag balls into the mainstream for a short while).

The series has earned critical praise, both because of its truthful portrayal of what life was like for the LGBTQ+ community in the Reagan years, and also for utilizing LGBTQ+ actors, writers, and producers to tell their own stories. There are five transgender women of color who lead the show, all of whom portray transgender characters. And the show’s writing and producing teams include Janet Mock and Our Lady J.

Broadway star Mj Rodriguez plays “Blanca,” a member of the House of Abundance family. Within the first few minutes of the series, Blanca learns that she is H.I.V.-positive, and this harrowing news motivates her to live her life more fully. She becomes frustrated with her house mother’s overpowering sense of leadership and leaves the House of Abundance to found her own house, so she can create something that will last after she is gone. The House of Evangelistas is born, and Blanca begins taking in misfits and others who have been discarded by their own families and communities, giving to them what she herself has never had.

Jojo Whilden/FX

By the end of the first episode, Blanca’s warm and nurturing spirit is evident and powerful. She is house mother, but she also appoints herself as guardian of those living with her. One of her “children,” Damon, is a 17-year-old dancer who has been disowned by his parents because of his sexuality. Blanca not only gives him a place to sleep, but she also “forces” him (literally dragging him by his ear as some mothers do) to audition for the prestigious New School of Dance in the city. Damon gets accepted to the program, and Blanca’s steady maternal presence in his life is established.

Blanca further proves herself as parental role model in the second episode. After staying up until the early morning hours waiting for Damon to return from a date, she gives Damon the “sex talk” that he never received from his own parents, emphasizing to him the vital importance of practicing safe sex. Her concern for his well being is instinctual and also personal: she wants more than anything for Damon to avoid making the same mistakes she has made in her life.

The Christmas-themed third episode of the series focuses on the family unit as a whole that has been created in the House of Evangelistas. Each member of the family shares memories of Christmas that are mostly rife with heartbreak. Blanca sets out to change everyone’s Christmas experience by decorating their apartment with a tree, constantly playing Christmas music, and even cooking a complete turkey dinner. Even a hilarious kitchen disaster does not dampen the Christmas spirit.

Pose is a dance-musical show, but it isn’t all glitz and glam. It tackles difficult subject matters that are often glossed over or avoided completely in other television shows and movies. For example, in the second episode, Blanca goes to a bar to meet her friend Lulu for drinks. And the patrons and staff of the bar – all cisgender gay men – make it clear to Blanca that she and Lulu, also a trans woman, are not welcomed in that establishment. Blanca demands that they are served drinks, but the bar’s owner asks them to leave, because as he says, “I’m not throwing a costume party.” Blanca is confused why they are not accepted in a gay establishment. But her friend Lulu explains clearly that rampant transphobia exists even within the LGBTQ+ community:

Everybody needs someone to make them feel superior. That line ends with us, though. The shit runs downhill, past the women, the blacks, latins, gays, until it reaches the bottom and lands on our kind.

Blanca’s story is refreshing, because never has a transgender character in a television series been given such depth, presence, and sheer power to live her life and tell her own story. Her identity affects every part of her life, but it is not the only aspect about her that we get to see. She is a mother figure, compassionate and resilient, who only wants to help her children find their place in the world. By the end of episode four, she still has not shared with them her H.I.V. status, only because she fears that they will worry about her health instead of focusing on their own dreams. Her motivation to create something that will last long after she is gone is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

Pose has four more episodes set to air this season. If you are looking for a show that has complex characters and captivating storylines, set to a killer ’80s soundtrack, then Pose is the show for you.
