Louden Swain seems to have another standalone show in the works, this time in Seattle in January! The band popped up on TicketFly as having a show at Chop Suey in Seattle, Washington on January 19.
The band is also listed on the venue’s website, here. It’s an all ages show, and doors open at 6:00pm. General admission tickets are available for $25, and a VIP Meet and Greet is also available for $60.
The short film Five Minutes has been accepted by the Catalina Film Festival. The film festival goes from September 27 to October 1, and Justine Bateman’s short film will be played on September 29. It will also be available to watch on Amazon Prime starting October 1.
Five Minutes stars Louden Swain, Supernatural and Kings of Con actor Rob Benedict and Shadowhunter’s Isaiah Mustafa.
The film is about what happens after an exercise the parents do at a progressive elementary school, and the drama and laughter it brings.
We have now entered the second half of the Sharp Objects series. This latest episode, “Closer,” focuses on the town as a whole coming together again, which last occurred during episode 2, “Dirt,” at Natalie’s funeral. Will Calhoun Day provide a relaxing atmosphere for the townspeople, who have been uptight and scared in the aftermath of the latest murder?
Of course not. This is Sharp Objects, after all.
Here is a recap of “Closer.”
Obligatory spoiler warning – read ahead at your own risk!
This episode picks up from last week’s frenetic final 90 seconds. We see Amma once again skating by herself down a street in the dark of night, and a car is shining its headlights on her, gaining on her. We now see that it is Camille in her Volvo, and she’s found her sister safe.
Camille wakes up at home, and it’s Calhoun Day. The front lawn of the Preaker-Crellins property is getting prepared for the festivities. Alan and Adora are getting dressed for the day in their bedroom. There is seemingly no turmoil between them, even though in last week’s episode, we saw Alan enter Adora’s bedroom after she told him she did not want him there.
After checking in with her boss Frank and giving him an update, Camille heads downstairs. As she passes Adora’s room, a flashback occurs.
She is 15 years old with short hair, and her sister Marian is with her, as when we first met them in the series premiere. The girls are watching a photographer stage their mother’s bedroom for a photo shoot. At one point, Camille picks up the photographer’s expensive camera and pretends to shoot her sister, who provides funny poses. Adora catches the girls and reprimands Camille only.
Back in present time, we see a framed cover of Southern Home magazine, and next to it is a write-up of the Preaker-Crellin home. The article features a picture of Adora and Marian in the bedroom, smiling for the camera. Camille is not included in the picture.
In town, folks learn that Camille’s latest write-up about Wind Gap has been published, and many people do not enjoy the light in which the town has been cast in it. Detective Willis is concerned about the fact that the article was released on Calhoun Day, believing it will reignite people’s fears and anger. Chief Vickery believes that Willis gave Camille confidential information and is particularly mad that the entire article is based on “…sources close to the investigation.” Willis says he did not tell Camille anything she hadn’t already figured out herself.
Back in the hustle and bustle at the Preaker estate, Amma asks Adora to help her rehearse for the play by reading through her lines with her. Camille offers to help Amma, and as they’re reading, Adora stops them and asks Camille what she is wearing for Calhoun Day. (Everyone dresses up in Confederate garb for the occasion, and Camille is wearing her usual all-black long-sleeved attire.) Adora says that she is taking her clothes shopping immediately.
The women arrive at the clothes store in town. It’s obvious that Adora has called ahead, because the shop owner is expecting her. She asks who Camille is, and Camille introduces herself. Adora says, “This is my eldest daughter. She takes after her father…his coloring, his temperament.” Inside the store, Camille confronts Adora. “That’s more than I’ve ever heard you say about my father.” “There’s not much else to say,” Adora responds.
Amma tells her mother that Camille’s latest article has been published, and in it, Camille claims that either John Keene or Bob Nash killed the two girls. Camille says that that is not what she said, but Amma points out that the article states that “Wind Gap kills its children.” This display is more humiliation than Adora can handle, and she growls – literally – at both of them to shut up.
The shop owner takes Camille to the dressing room with a few outfits for her to try on. All of them are sleeveless summer dresses, so Camille picks another dress that would fully cover her. In the dressing room, she asks for the dress she picked out, but no one gives it to her. And, her mother removes her clothes she was wearing from the dressing room door, so Camille is stuck inside the dressing room in her undergarments, with nothing to cover her scars.
Adora asks her which dress is the best one, and Camille says that none of them will work. Amma asks Adora what’s going on, and Adora says, “Your sister is being stupid.” Camille asks and then begs Amma to go wait in the car, but when Adora will not back down, Camille bursts through the dressing room door, in only her bra and underwear, and throws the dresses in her mother’s face. This is the first time Adora has seen her daughter’s skin in years, and it’s Amma’s first time ever.
Adora says, “It’s worse than I remember.” She then asks her if it’s over (referring to her self harming), and Camille lies and says it is. “Hardly matters. You’re ruined,” Adora says. “All out of spite! You want to know who your father was?! That’s who he was – all spite. I’m glad Amma saw.”
Camille returns to the dressing room, buries her face into the summer dresses, and screams.
Back at home, Amma apologizes to Camille for giving her a hard time about the article. Amma takes her to her room and shows her a dress with long sleeves that is suitable for Calhoun Day, that she has picked out for Camille. Camille puts it on and heads out to the front lawn.
Detective Willis runs into Bob Nash on the lawn. Bob, who has been spiking his drinks with liquor from the trunk of his car and is now properly drunk, asks Willis why he is there and if he has forgotten that he has lost a child. Willis reassures him that he is taking the investigation very seriously, but Bob is not satisfied and points out John Keene across the lawn and tells Willis to lock him up.
Meanwhile, John and his girlfriend Ashley confront Camille about her article. Ashley is most concerned with the fact that none of her words from Camille’s interview of them are included in the write-up. “I am John’s only advocate! You don’t want to burn this bridge. I know things, Camille,” Ashley says.
Camille catches up with Detective Willis, and she tells him the history behind the Calhoun Day celebration. Millie Calhoun, Camille’s great-great-great grandmother, was the town founder’s child bride. When the Union Army came to arrest her husband Zeke for deserting his duties, they kidnapped and tortured Millie. “And this is a holiday?” Willias asks. “We don’t have a lot of happy stories around here,” Camille explains.
Throughout the day, Adora has noticed Camille and Detective Willis getting close, enjoying the day together. At her first chance, when Camille leaves Willis to help Amma with her lines for the play, Adora pounces. She invites him up to the house to give him a tour. The women from last week’s luncheon scene (including my fave, Jackie) are on the porch. They notice Adora taking the detective inside the house, and it appears Adora wants them to.
Jackie sees Camille on the lawn and tells her that Willis is alone with Adora in the house. As she makes her way back to the house, Camille runs into some old friends that we first saw at the wake of Natalie Keene. They make fun of her relationship with Detective Willis and ask her personal questions about him. Then they ask her why she thinks John Keene is the murderer of the girls. When Camille says she does not believe that, they say her article makes it sound like she does, and they point out that Bob Nash, who is even more drunk at this point, also got the same idea from the article.
A quick flashback cuts into her vision: she is an 18-year-old with long hair again, in her cheerleader’s outfit we saw in last week’s episode, and she is surrounded by others on the cheerleading squad. This flashback tells us that these “friends” of hers were a part of the cheerleading squad with her in high school and probably treated her as badly back then as they are in present time.
Camille looks up and sees her mother and Willis in Adora’s bedroom window. Adora tells Willis about Camille’s sister Marian and how, when she died, Camille’s strength died with her. Adora also tells him that she is recovering from a “recent episode,” and that she is very delicate. “A rare rose…but not without thorns.”
It’s time for the play to begin, and we learn that Amma and some other schoolmates took drugs – likely LSD or ecstasy – a few minutes earlier. Camille downs a few beers. Ashley is still shocked and offended that nothing she said was included in Camille’s article. Chief Vickery is keeping a close eye on the very impaired Bob Nash.
Amma makes it through the play and does a good job, even though she is obviously under the influence of something psychoactive. She does notice at times throughout the play that Camille is not paying much attention, because she is too focused on talking with Detective Willis. This seems to upset Amma.
As everyone applauds the actors on stage, there is a ruckus at the back of the crowd. Bob Nash has begun attacking and punching John Keene. Chief Vickery and Detective Willis rush to break up the fight. Bob is screaming at John, calling him a murderer. Others from the crowd join in, and Camille starts to realize the impact her article might have had on everyone’s biases and emotions.
And while all of the partygoers have their backs turned to watch the fight, Amma seizes the opportunity to run off stage. And no one sees her.
As a screaming and crying Adora yells for her daughter from the front porch, a search party assembles and runs into the woods to try to find Amma. Camille joins, and as she’s running through the woods, she sees a girl dressed in white – as Amma was – about 50 yards ahead of her, hiding behind a tree. It is her sister, Marian. Camille follows the vision of her sister and eventually ends up at the creepy hunting shed. Inside is Amma, who has obviously been physically attacked but is alive and conscious.
Back at the Preaker home, Amma is resting comfortably in her own bed. Adora and Camille are on the veranda. Adora says she wants to apologize for something, but Camille interrupts her and thanks her for not telling Detective Willis about her history with self-harm. Adora points out that he will find out eventually, if their relationship continues… “when you get close.” Camille says she never gets close with anyone, precisely because of her scars. Adora then says that is what she wants to apologize for:
You can’t get close. That’s your father. And it’s why, I think, I’ve never loved you. You were born to it — that cold nature.
I hope that’s some comfort to you.
Camille leaves the house in a rage and goes to Detective Willis’ motel room and spends the night with him.
So, we already knew that Alan wasn’t Camille’s father. But we now know that Camille does not know who her father was at all. Does Adora resent Camille because she was perhaps an unwanted pregnancy? Is that why she’s so damned mean to her? And is Camille’s father still alive?
Be sure to return for a recap of Sharp Objects‘ sixth episode, “Cherry,” which will air on Sunday August 12th at 9 p.m. EST.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 and unfortunately ended in 2003. The show followed slayer Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) spanning 7 seasons as she fights monsters, high school and life in general along with her friends and watcher Giles (Anthony Head). Buffy the Vampire Slayer did continue on with further seasons as a comic book published by Dark Horse Comics.
During the current Supernatural hellatus, I have been re-watching Buffy from the beginning and couldn’t help but notice how many actors have been on both shows. I thought this would be a good time to take a look back at some memorable Supernatural actors that have made appearances on Buffy.
Julie Benz
Julie Benz played Darla the vampire who was the sire and former girlfriend of Angel on Buffy and also played Layla Rourke, whoDean meets when Sam takes him to get healed on Supernatural season 1, episode 12 “Faith”.
Felicia Day
On Buffy, Felicia Day played a shy slayer in training named Vi, but on Supernatural she plays our beloved IT girl, honorary Women of Letters and hunter-in-training, Charlie Bradbury.
Charisma Carpenter
She played an 800-year-old witch named Maggie Stark on season 7 episode 5 of Supernatural, “Shut up, D.Phil.” Charisma Carpenter was also the spoiled-brat turned ass-kicker Cordelia Chase on Buffy.
James Marsters
Also in “Shut up, D.Phil.” on Supernatural and married to Maggie Stark was Don Stark played by Ghost of the Robot musician James Marsters – who you may also recognize more notably as the vampire Spike from Buffy.
Amber Benson
Ironically, Amber Benson played Lenore, a vegetarian vampire on Supernatural Season 2 episode 3 “Blood Lust’, but on Buffy, she helped fight vampires and monsters with her girlfriend and fellow witch Willow.
Mercedes McNab
Mercedes McNab played the annoying Sunnydale high schooler turned vampire Harmony Kendall on Buffy. In Supernatural, she played Lucy, a party gal unknowingly turned into a vampire on episode 7 of season 3 “Fresh Blood”.
Harry Groener
Anthology Professor Morrison, who appeared in three different episodes in season 7, 8 and 9 of Supernatural was played by Harry Groener, who also played the evil Mayor Richard Wilkins on Buffy.
Rob Benedict
You may recognize this member of Louden Swain since he played the vampire Jape who worked for Adam on Buffy, but on Supernatural,Rob Benedict played Prophet Chuck Shurley (aka God).
David Haydn-Jones
Before David Haydn-Jones was Arthur Ketch and off doing Ketch things on Supernatural, he was on Buffy as Hobson, a member of the Watchers Council.
Megalyn Echikunwoke
Megalyn Echikunwoke is not only Dean Winchester’s ex-girlfriend Cassie Robinson, she was also a witch named Vaughne in the episode ‘The Killer in Me’ on Buffy.
Chad Lindberg
Playing a computer whiz on both shows, Chad Lindberg, Supernatural’s Ash, was on Buffy as David Kirby in the episode “I Robot, you Jane’.
As Supernatural continues, I look forward to seeing if any other actors from Whedonverse shows make an appearance. Who was your favorite crossover actor? Let us know in the comments below!
Last week, Kim Rhodes (Supernatural’s Jody Mills) and Stands began hinting towards the creation of what Rhodes referred to as “#thingy” that was hand-illustrated by Rhodes herself. That “#thingy” has now been revealed as Kim Rhodes’ Little Ray of Pitch Black Coloring Book!
In a separate Tweet, Rhodes also makes it clear that this is not just a coloring book, but an activity book as well! Illustration pages are joined by a paper doll, an achievement list page, and other fun activities! Each coloring book also comes with a box of black crayons.
For the campaign aspect of this project, upon purchasing the coloring book, you’ll be joining Rhodes in supporting New Leash on Life, an organization that is dedicated to helping shelter animals receive a chance at a better life, and a portion of all proceeds made by this campaign will go towards supporting them! For more information on New Leash on Life, please visit their official website.
Also make sure to check out the Instagram post from Rhodes below, in which she explains the story behind “#thingy,” and her inspiration for this project:
The crow featured within this Instagram post is an example of an illustration that can be found within the coloring book.
For those that may be struggling to find the funds to procure a copy of the coloring book at this point, Rhodes hilariously Tweeted out the eventual rebellious act of releasing a free page for everyone’s enjoyment, so keep an eye out for that!
NOW THEN! As I always say, don’t buy if buying would make you unhappy. Happiness is the goal. At some point, I will share a single page publicly you can print and color for free. No, I didn’t ask @Stands. Gonna do it anyway.
If you wish to buy yourself a copy of the “Little Ray of Pitch Black” coloring book, make sure to visit the Stands page before the campaign ends in two weeks!
Please note that shipping for Kim Rhodes’ coloring book will begin during the second week of September.
Louden Swain fans have been waiting (im)patiently to hear when the band’s acoustic album will come out. Today we received confirmation from drummer Stephen Norton that Splitting the Seams will drop October 26th!
If you didn’t hear the news earlier this week, Max Joseph, co-host of MTV’s Catfish, took to social media to announce that he’s made the decision to stop working on the show. Max and Nev go together like peanut butter and jelly, so while it’s hard to think about the series continuing without him, it’s a reality we have to face.
Nev Schulman asked on Twitter yesterday who we think would be a good co-host to work beside him on Catfish, and while there were plenty of big names suggested such as Chrissy Teigen (model, actress, and wife of John Legend) and Perez Hilton (celebrity blogger), I had a different thought altogether.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name, Matt is currently a regular on General Hospital, playing Dr. Griffin Munro, and is also known for his roles as Michael and Young John Winchester on the incredibly popular TV series Supernatural. Matt had recurring roles on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Kings of Con, and How to Get Away With Murder as well.
Perhaps most relevant, though, is Matt’s recent co-host spots on Extra TV. Matt has co-hosted quite a few times in the past year, and as a viewer, he seems incredibly comfortable in front of the camera. He’s engaging, always has what seems like a genuine rapport with the other co-host, and his enthusiasm would be well-suited for a show like Catfish.
Maybe one of the reasons he seems so easy-going shooting live like this is due to his appearances at Supernatural conventions. Matt attends several conventions a year, and as part of that, he oftentimes shares the stage with co-workers Rob Benedict and Richard Speight, Jr. for hour-long panels where the trio takes questions from the audience. Without any prior knowledge of what might be asked, Matt is more than used to thinking on his feet, and regularly has the audience engaged and in stitches with his comedic timing and witty sense of humor.
Applying this to Catfish, I think Matt would be able to roll with whatever punches are thrown his way, which sometimes happens literally when it comes to filming an episode of Catfish. He’s already proven that he’s a quick thinker and that he doesn’t have any problems relating to people from all walks of life.
Which brings me to my next point: Matt is not afraid to be in touch with his feelings. He talks eloquently about how becoming a father has changed his life, raising butterflies with his wife Mandy, and his love for Disney’s Moana. A lot of the time on Catfish, people get emotional for a variety of reasons. Whether it’s coming out to loved ones for the first time, being lied to, or finally finding the long-distance love of their life, Nev and Max provide a shoulder to cry on during almost every episode. I am absolutely certain that Matt would not only react genuinely with compassion and empathy, but he would be in his element when it comes to building people up and helping them to see their worth. Hundreds of fans can also attest to the fact that Matt gives excellent hugs, and honestly, that can’t be understated when it comes to making people feel better.
Finally, I think Matt and Nev would get along famously. One of the biggest selling points for Max and Nev co-hosting Catfish was their on-screen chemistry, and while we can’t tell for sure until they’re face-to-face, fans of both men will know they already have a lot in common. Matt uses his social media platform to encourage voting, keeping families together, and putting an end to gun violence – all things Nev has also spoken about. The pair are interested in living healthy lifestyles, which you can see scrolling through either of their Twitter feeds. They’re both what Nev calls “modern men”. They’re both first-time parents to young children and take active, hands-on roles in raising them. Nev and Matt are passionate about putting an end to stereotypical gender roles, which you can see in the video Nev posted here, as well as in photos of Matt looking incredible dressed as a cheerleader below.
Another important point for MTV and Nev to consider is the passionate fan base Matt would bring along with him. Supernatural fans in particular are known for being very involved on social media, often trending during the airing of episodes, participating in many fund-raising campaigns, and dominating several online votes to win awards for Supernatural actors and directors alike. I think it’s fair to say that Supernatural fans would show up in droves to watch and support Matt Cohen on Catfish.
So as you can see, Matt Cohen would bring a lot to the table as a potential co-host for Catfish. He’s got the skill, the in-person experience with fans, the right disposition, the enthusiasm, the fan base, and the kind of sense of humor that’s going to have him laughing at all of Nev’s puns and dad jokes. All MTV has to do is give him a chance.
Do you think Matt would make a great co-host for Catfish? We’ve love to see what you think! Make sure to let us know by using the hashtags #MattCohen4Catfish, #Catfish, and tagging @CatfishMTV in your social media posts!
Say it isn’t so! Catfish fans everywhere are wiping away their tears because co-host Max Joseph announced today on Twitter that it’s time for him to move away from Catfish.
In his own words, Max says, “With Catfish still going strong after 7 seasons, 117 episodes, 31 specials, and showing no sign of slowing down, I feel it is finally time to for me to make my exit.”
I’m sure I’m not the only Catfish fan absolutely devastated by this! The bromance between Nev and Max is one of the things many fans love most about the show, and it’s almost impossible to picture the next season without him in it at all!
Of course, everybody at Nerds and Beyond wishes Max well in everything he does in the future, but Catfish just won’t be the same without him! Make sure to tune in on August 22 to Max’s final episode on MTV!
I only hope we don’t lose sight of one thing- that it was all started by a mouse.
Walt Disney
ABC announced that they will be broadcasting a celebration of 90 Years of Mickey Mouse on November 4. Mickey’s debut as Steamboat Willie was November 18, 1928 and 90 years later, we are remembering all that Mickey has done!
The celebrations for the historic mouse have just begun! Recently, Disney unveiled a painting that commemorates Mickey’s success and his beginning. Now on November 4, there will be a two-hour special starting at 8 p.m. EST, featuring musical performances (not yet announced so stay tuned!), tributes, and even short films never seen by the public! It’s time to join in with the family to relive all of Mickey’s finest moments and how he and the Disney franchise changed and inspired everything we know today.
Wayward Sisters may not have gotten sent to series, but that doesn’t mean recurring Wayward characters like Jody Mills are gone for good. In fact, Kim Rhodes (who plays Jody Mills), shared a tweet today that let us know she’s currently shooting for Supernatural’s 14th season!
No spoilers, but I’m preeeeeety sure I just made this season’s #spn gag reel. #walkingishard
Although it isn’t confirmed officially, Yadira Guevara-Prip, who played Kaia Nieves, is also reported to be in the same episode according to IMDB.
We are so ready for guest appearances from any and all of our Wayward ladies in Season 14 of Supernatural! Who are you looking forward to seeing next season? Let us know in the comments below!
