Recap: ‘Criminal Minds’ Season 14, Episode 1 – “300”

SPOILER ALERT: Plot details for Criminal Minds’ Season 14 Premiere, “300,” will be discussed in the following recap. Read at your own risk!

Wheels up, Criminal Minds fans: the hit CBS drama is back for its fourteenth season for a brand-new year of taking down criminals! The premiere, which aired on Oct. 3, was a landmark episode for another celebration, the airing of Criminal Minds’ 300th episode. This is a remarkable accomplishment for a television series, and what a way to kickstart this milestone than premiering its fourteenth season?

The premiere episode, appropriately named “300,” followed the events of the massive cliffhanger dropped on fans during last year’s season finale, where Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) were abducted by the Cult of Messiah, Benjamin Merva (Michael Hogan).

Right off the bat, witnessing this crime and its choice in victims was a horrible way to leave off the thirteenth season. Reid and Garcia, veterans of the show since its first season, are easily two of the top fan favorite characters in the show’s fanbase; while they are FBI agents, their lovable and gentle personalities onscreen make it extremely difficult to believe that anyone would want to harm them. Reid, at least, has often proven himself able to handle dire situations such as this one, and has been depicted as ruthless to overcome his enemies. Garcia, on the other hand, while in possession of a sharp mind, is certainly no field agent, and has hardly had any need to protect herself when confronted with dangerous situations.

Plus, Reid has already undergone so much personal trauma throughout the show’s run, more than what any person would consider fair. Most recently, he was wrongly sent to prison while his mother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s grew progressively worse. That’s not counting everything else he’s gone through in past seasons.

The BAU, now missing two of their family members, have to try and find them before it’s too late, and that takes on a different emotional toll not only on the characters, but on the show’s fans. Just watching JJ (AJ Cook) break down in the bathroom and being consoled by Prentiss (Paget Brewster) was enough to get me bawling.

Can’t this team catch a break, and haven’t they suffered enough already?

During this episode, fans are given a massive mental whiplash and a flash to the past with a surprising revelation: we have seen this cult before, all the way back in the show’s fourth season.

Does the name Benjamin Cyrus ring a bell for fans?

That’s right: this cult known as the Believers is a revived group, having originated from the initial cult formed by Cyrus (Luke Perry) in the episode “Minimal Loss.”

It was fascinating to see how an case from nearly a decade ago still comes back to haunt the BAU, especially with the editing work that was done to link these two cases together effectively. The flashbacks sequences to Liberty Ranch were obvious inclusions, but new scenes were filmed so that it looks as though they included the newer characters of Meadows (Karen David) and Merva. They did not appear within “Minimal Loss,” but the editing was done and captured in such a way that it looked incredibly authentic. Plus, it was a huge throwback to see younger Reid and Prentiss onscreen.

It’s portrayed that this new cult, while they captured and abducted both Reid and Garcia, were primarily focused on having Reid as their victim due to his tie to Cyrus back on Liberty Ranch. It was due to Reid’s undercover position as a social worker within Cyrus’ church that led to his gaining of Cyrus’ trust, which ultimately led to Cyrus’ downfall. Reid’s history with this old case may have been the fuel needed to light the fire of revenge within the new cult, and presented the perfect Victim #300 — another appropriate titular event.

However, through commendable teamwork and power that only the BAU could display, Reid is able to relay information to Garcia that comes in handy when he eventually finds an escape for her, and she, upon her return to the FBI headquarters, is able to dispatch the team to Reid’s location. Fortunately, it all ends happily; Reid and Garcia are reunited with their team, Meadows is arrested, and the cult members were either killed or arrested.

“300” thrusts forward a recurring theme of Criminal Minds: the past, no matter how far back, can still come back to haunt you. We saw that with Aaron Hotchner (Thomas Gibson) and the criminals The Reaper and Mr. Scratch, with Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) and his abuser Carl Buford (Julius Tennon), and Reid with Cat Adams (Aubrey Plaza) and Lindsey Vaughn (Gia Mantegna), just to name a few.

Yet, this premiere also exemplifies another huge theme of the show that hopefully will remain strong throughout the season: the BAU is family, and family will do whatever it takes for one another.

Criminal Minds returns on CBS on Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. CT.

Alright Lilo & Stitch Fans!

If you haven’t heard, it was announced that Disney will be producing another live action movie, this time of the beloved 2002 movie Lilo & Stitch. There is currently no word on a release date or casting news.

The story follows Lilo and her older sister Nani who live in Hawaii and are trying to make ends meet since their parents died. Nani is trying to impress Child Protective Services so that Lilo doesn’t get taken away from her. Stitch, as Lilo names him, starts becoming Lilo’s only friend, until struggles tear them apart. Once Stitch gets caught and is about to be taken back to space, we learn that Stitch is apart of Lilo and Nani’s family and he is granted the right to stay.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the remake is intended to be a live-action/CG hybrid produced by the team behind the live-action remake of “Aladdin,” currently in production and set to release in May 2019. It is unknown at this time if the live-action version of Lilo & Stitch will be released in theaters or on Disney’s proposed streaming service set to launch in 2019.

While not a commercial success, Lilo & Stitch found an audience and launched several direct-to-video sequels and a television series. This movie also changed the way many think about family and gave audiences a quote they all remember:

Five Films to Watch This Halloween

0

Now that October is here, and it is officially fall, we need to talk about something exciting.

No, it is not about the changing leaves, sweater weather or pumpkin-flavored life. October means it is time for Halloween and there are many Halloween-themed movies to choose from.

With that in mind, here are five movies to watch this Halloween:

Hocus Pocus

Released: 1993

Kathy Najimy (left), Bette Midler (center), and Sarah Jessica Parker (right) star as the Sanderson sisters in the 1993 classic “Hocus Pocus.” (Courtesy of IMDB)

Taking place in Salem, Massachusetts on October 31, the new kid Max unknowingly brings the Sanderson sisters back to life. The Sanderson sisters are played by Bette Midler (Winifred), Kathy Najimy (Mary) and Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah).  There is music, comedy, and a talking cat, a great movie for Halloween.

Trick ‘r Treat

Released: 2007

Quinn Lord stars as Sam in the 2007 horror film “Trick ‘r Treat.” (Courtesy of IMDB)

It is a dark comedy anthology movie that takes place on Halloween night. The only connection to each story is Sam, a kid in orange pajamas and a burlap sack mask. When Sam appears, you know things will take a turn for the worse.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Released: 1975

Richard O’Brien (left), Tim Curry (center) and Patricia Quinn star in the 1973 cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” (Courtesy of IMDB)

This cult classic takes place on a November night when Brad and Janet are stranded because their car breaks down. While looking for help, the couple finds a mansion and meet Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Riff Raff, and Magenta.  There are catchy songs, horror, and science fiction in this film.  Remember, let’s do the time warp again!

The Hills Have Eyes

Released: 2006

Emilie de Ravin (left) and Dan Byrd star in the 2006 remake of the Wes Craven film “The Hills Have Eyes.” (Courtesy of IMDB)

The scariest movies are the ones that have people as the monsters. This is a remake of Wes Craven’s 1977 version.  A family traveling in an RV are going through the desert and after getting sketchy directions for a shortcut, which of course they take, they become stranded. Not long after, they are hunted and not everyone survives.

Cabin in the Woods

Released: 2012

From left, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, and Kristen Connolly star as five college friends in Joss Whedon’s 2012 film “The Cabin in the Woods.” (Courtesy of IMDB)

This horror comedy comes to you from the mind of Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Dollhouse and Angel. Taking place at a cabin in, you guessed it, the woods, five college friends want a break. Of course, the cabin is very isolated and then they face monsters and horror that are more than they appear.

Whether you are a fan of horror, musical, comedy, animated, or b-rated style movies, there is something for everyone.

New York Comic Con Thursday Recap: Fraser’s Ridge, Tom Felton, and More!

0
Tom Felton and Natalia Tena answer questions from the audience at the “Origin” Panel at New York Comic Con in New York, NY, Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018. Both received many questions about their work on the Harry Potter franchise as well as their roles on the new Youtube Premium series.

It feels more like New Year’s Eve in Times Square and less like a Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Thousands of attendees pack every corner of the exhibition hall, panel rooms, and even offsite locations like the Hammerstein Ballroom and the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, making it an exciting coming together of fans – a lot of fans.

With hundreds of panels and exhibitors each day of the show, it would be impossible to recap every awesome occurrence. But that being said, here are a few of the highlights from day one of NYCC 2018.

Starz’s Outlander and American Gods Booth

The Motel America Diner of “American Gods” and Fraser’s Ridge of “Outlander” are brought to life at the Starz booth at New York Comic Con.

Throughout the convention, Starz will be providing authentic experiences to fans from two of their hit shows, American Gods and Outlander. On the American Gods half, fans can step into an authentic replica of the Motel America Diner. Filled with easter eggs and nods to the show that only true fans will get, pop in and have a seat at a booth or go up to the counter to pick up free merchandise with the download of the Starz App. Fans can also take a picture with either the #OldGods or #NewGods and have it sent directly to them. Finally, fans can enter for a spot at a cast signing later this weekend.

Over on the Outlander side of the booth, the door to Jamie’s cabin may as well be the stones at Craigh na Dun, because once you step inside you feel as though you are in the 18th century. The historic fragrance and beauty company, Caswell-Massey (est. 1752), is on site providing limited edition scents as well as insights as to how Outlander works to create authenticity to colonial America. Fans can also have a leather luggage tag monogrammed by the leather company Royce – a perfect and necessary item for any time traveler. And, like the American Gods diner, fans have the opportunity to win a spot at a signing with the Outlander cast.

SYFY Wire Fan Lounge

A collaborative mural project at the SYFY Wire Fan Lounge at New York Comic Con. Fans can color in and design tiles while their phones recharge or they wait to select their free shirt.

SYFY, the cable network, is a clear sponsor and supporter of New York Comic Con, as is its media site SYFY Wire. Their activities are centered at the Syfy Fan Lounge at the Crystal Palace Mezzanine. The Fan Lounge offers several activities of note. Fans can sit and recharge their phones, get makeovers – including rhinestones and glitter – by makeup artists, and add to this fan-made mural, all while waiting to receive a free t-shirt. Shirts are available for five SYFY original series: Krypton, Deadly Class, Night FlyersHappy! and The Magicians. There are also claw machines where you can try your hand at winning a “Happy” plushie. It is a great spot to meet fellow fans, rest and recharge, and get some free swag while supplies last.

YouTube Premium’s Origin starring Tom Felton and Natalia Tena

Senior TV Editor at People Magazine Breanne Heldman moderates the “Origin” panel at New York Comic Con featuring Mika Watkins, Tom Felton, Natalia Tena, Sen Mitsuji, and Philipp Christopher on Oct. 4, 2018. The cast and creator teased the upcoming Youtube Premium series to the crowd at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

Finally, a panel almost as out of this world as the show it is about. Origin is a Youtube Premium series that will be released on November 14, 2018. It tells the story of a group of humans that seek out a new planet to escape their past, only to wake up on a derelict and abandoned ship. How – or if – they survive, is up to them. The panel featured moderated questions, a sneak preview of the first episode, and a Q&A with audience members. For the full scoop, stay tuned tomorrow as our NYCC coverage continues.

’30 Miles From Nowhere’ Starring Rob Benedict: Trailer Released + Monster Fest 2018!

0

30 Miles From Nowhere, starring Rob Benedict, has just released two important pieces of news! First, the trailer has been released, giving us our first look at the film.

Here’s more about the film:

After the untimely death of their old college pal, five friends (and one new girlfriend) descend upon the Wisconsin summer home they frequented in their 20s. The creep factor at the cabin is high, with a thumping in the crawl space, blood spurting from the pipes, and a cockroach infestation in the guest bedroom. When a storm moves in, trapping them in the woods, they find themselves faced with the ultimate human dilemma, to kill or be killed, in order to make it to morning. 30 MILES FROM NOWHERE is a thriller about what fear does to the human brain, and how an ordinary citizen becomes an unwitting soldier.

The film also stars Carrie Preston, Birgundi Baker, and Seana Kofoed and is directed by Caitlin Koller.

Second, the film has been accepted as part of the lineup at Australia’s Monster Fest 2018! The film will make it’s world premiere at the festival, and will also have a Q&A with director Caitlin Koller. It will be screened on November 24. More information can be found here.
