A Farewell To Rick Grimes of ‘The Walking Dead’

After nine seasons, Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, is saying farewell to The Walking Dead in episode nine this Sunday, November 4. Since the first episode aired, fans have been following him on this journey, crying with him during every loss, rejoicing with him during every win, and watching his circle of family and friends get smaller and smaller. From the moment he woke up from his coma, Rick Grimes has been fighting for a better future.

Lincoln wrote a touching letter thanking the fans and media for their support of the show and his character. Here are some excerpts from the letter, which can be read in its entirety on the TV Guide website.

“Thank you…For coming with us on this journey. For the nine years of fear, heartache, anger and, let’s face it, guts you’ve shown by making it through these 115 episodes and counting… For understanding that despite the high volume of undead, this is actually an ongoing story about what it is to be alive. A story of hope, family and friendship… It’s been a wild ride, shaped by the relationship between the show and the fans of the show, and in no small part you good people of the press.”

As a “thank you” and farewell to Andrew Lincoln for portraying the strong, complicated, and at times flawed character, Nerds & Beyond presents some fan-favorite Rick Grimes moments.

Jennifer (@macd1982):

“My favourite ‘Rick moment’ is also probably my favourite moment of the entire series and it happened early on in the first season. It’s the moment Rick is finally reunited with his family seemingly out of the blue. Andrew’s acting in that scene never fails to make me emotional, no matter how many times I watch it (and I have watched it a lot). The disbelief, relief, and sheer joy that he cycles through in quick succession as he hugs his son and his wife … it’s such a small scene but it had a huge impact on me.”

Courtesy of AMC.

Nicky (@nicky_normshine):

“Shooting zombie Sophia, caused him so much pain. The realisation that this world really was happening and could happen to his family at any moment. What his life and his son’s life had become. Yet still standing up and being the one to take the lead. He always has, maybe that’s what his downfall was. “

Courtesy of AMC.

Theresa:

“As odd as it sounds, I would have to say it was when he killed Shane in season 2. They had a very interesting and complicated relationship and history. They were friends and worked together, but once Rick was out of the picture and in a coma, he took over Rick’s life as if he wanted to be him. When Rick woke up from the coma and was finally reunited with his family Shane was once again pushed aside. Shane tried to undermine him and was very resentful. So, with all of that emotional build up to have it where Shane was going to kill him unless he [was killed first] was inevitable. You could tell Rick was both heartbroken and a bit relieved for killing his former best friend. That conflict within himself I think he carried with him through all the seasons.”

Courtesy of AMC.

Deb (@Classichassis):

“We all know that Rick has not always made what we would consider the right choices, but he certainly didn’t back down from making the tough calls. When I look back at his years on the show, I think this is the thing that stands out for me the most. Rick always put his responsibility to the group ahead of his own interests.

Rick wanted to build something; he wanted a future for his kids and the others in the group, not just an existence. He wanted to build a life.  He always tried to be the best father he could be. Rick tried to teach Carl survival and defense skills, while emphasizing how important it was to actually LIVE every day, not just survive.

I personally am going to miss Rick on the show. I never thought this day would come. I didn’t see how it could. While I fully realize that in a show like The Walking Dead no one is considered safe, I always felt that certain characters were safe.  Now I know that anything can happen.  We shall have to keep watching to see what happens from here but in the meantime, let’s say a heartfelt goodbye to Rick Grimes. Here’s to your honor, dependability and your ability to see the good in almost anyone (Negan excepted of course!) We will miss you Rick… Daryl has some big shoes to fill.”

Courtesy of AMC.

What else is there to say except, you will be missed Andrew. Thank you for bringing Rick Grimes to life. All the best to you in your future projects.

‘Supernatural’ Season 14, Episode 4 Recap: “Mint Condition”

0
Happy Halloween! This Halloween-inspired episode, “Mint Condition”, was written by Davy Perez and was full of nerdy Dean, callbacks and Easter eggs, and fantastic one-liners like “I’ve seen you get winded eating a taco.” We have been excited for this episode since the pictures of Jared and Jensen in costume outside the comic-book store were released. So without further ado, let’s get started!

Spoilers ahead!

The episode begins with Stuart, an employee at a comic book store, unboxing a package that includes a Mezco 15-inch Mega-Scale Panthro action figure. Stuart is in the process of stealing this new toy from the shop when his boss, Samantha, calls to voice her displeasure for Stuart insulting a customer earlier in the day. After hanging up the phone, Stuart locks the shop up, taking the Panthro action figure with him. Later, at his house, Stuart is yelling at the pizza delivery person for taking over 30 minutes when the action figure suddenly comes to life. Stuart goes to investigate why the toy is magically in a different spot, when we see the Panthro become animated and start swinging its nunchucks to attack Stuart as he screams in terror.

The next scene opens with Dean lying in bed, hugging a pillow, eating pizza, and watching a horror movie marathon. He is completely into it, when Sam knocks on the door to try and convince him to come out of his room. Dean immediately notices that Sam has shaved his ‘grief beard’ and comments that it is as “smooth as a dolphin’s belly.” We next learn that Dean has been hiding out in his room for almost a week because Cas and Jack are out hunting, there is no new information on Michael or his monsters, Dark Kaia is nowhere to be found, and, as Dean says, “the house is full of strangers.” But Sam knows exactly what to do to get Dean out of the house: entice him with a case involving killer toys. And it works.

Sam and Dean head to the comic book store, dressed in short-sleeve button down shirts; Sam has a pocket-protector, and Dean has a lollipop. (Thank you, costume department.) Dean teases Sam about shop-owner Samantha being a female version of him, so Sam responds that the other employee, Dirk, is a version of Dean. Dean fiercely disagrees right before he and Dirk begin fanboying and discussing the Hatchet Man replica.

After talking to female Sam and learning that Stuart is now at his mom’s house because he was kicked out of his apartment, the boys go to talk to Stuart about the attack. They ask Stuart about the accident while drinking homemade apple cider made by Stuart’s mom — and Dean makes sure to switch mugs with Sam in order to have the one with The Flash emblem on it. Stuart lies and says that he made up the whole story, and when he is questioned further, he kicks Sam and Dean out of the house. The boys, dressed in some amazing jackets (again, thank you, costume department), then head to the Impala to wait for Stuart to leave so they can check the house for hex bags.

While waiting in Baby, the boys discuss Sam’s hatred for Halloween and do more research on Stuart’s online presence. Sam points out that Stuart has been the recipient of a lot of online bullying, and Dean then blesses us with the wonderful line, “Gotta love the internet, where everyone can be a dick.”

The boys duck down in Baby to avoid being spotted by Stuart’s mom when she leaves the house, and they then wait for Stuart to also leave. But Stuart surprises them by coming out of the house bleeding and yelling for help. Sam and Dean run to him to help, and Sam agrees to stay with Stuart while Dean goes inside to investigate the situation. Dean follows a trail of blood into Stuart’s room up to a Texas Chainsaw Massacre poster, when suddenly a floating chainsaw comes flying at his head. Dean ducks just in time, and the chainsaw slams into the poster and gets lodged into the wall.

The following scene shows Sam and Dean at the hospital with Stuart and his mother. Dean explains to Sam that he swept the house for hex bags after the flying chainsaw incident and did not find any. However, he did find significant EMF. Dean ends up staying at the hospital to watch over Stuart while Sam goes back to the house to figure out the ghost situation.

Dirk is also at the hospital to wait for his best friend Stuart to wake up after the accident. He and Dean are watching the Hatchet Man horror movie, All Saints Day III, that Dean loves so much, and they bond while discussing which film in the series is their favorite. As always, it is fun to watch Dean talk about something he loves and is passionate about. The fun conversation takes a slight melancholy turn when we learn why Dean loves scary movies: “Growing up, it was nice to check out once in a while. I like to watch movies where I know the bad guy is gonna lose.”

Courtesy of the CW

Meanwhile, Sam, not finding any EMF at the house, has gone back to the comic book store to ask his female counterpart a few more questions. Samantha informs him that the previous store owner, Jordan, recently passed away of cancer and left the store to Samantha and Dirk. Sam asks why Stuart did not have part ownership, and Samantha explains that Jordan had fired Stuart for stealing merchandise, but Samantha and Dirk re-hired him after Jordan had passed. Sam finds out that Jordan was cremated right before the ghost makes his presence known. Sam tries to get Samantha out of the store before it is too late, but unfortunately he is knocked out (again) by the life-size Hatchet Man figurine.

Later, Sam wakes up and finds Samantha. He then has to explain to her that ghosts are real and can possess things, while simultaneously trying to figure out how to get her and himself out of the locked store. (The Hatchet Man figurine took the store keys with him when he left.) After failing to break the apparently shatterproof glass, Sam has to come up with a new plan.

Next, we see Dean snacking on junk food and continuing to bond with Dirk over the best gory horror movie death scenes. Sam calls to warn Dean that Hatchet Man is possessed by a ghost and is headed towards the hospital to try and kill Stuart. Dean completely misses the point and actually gets excited that his favorite horror movie villain is on his way to potentially kill him.

The next few scenes are quick snippets of Dean giving Dirk the talk and telling him to remain in the salt circle he just made around Stuart’s bed, and of Sam attempting to pick the lock at the comic book store, all while the possessed Hatchet Man is on its way to the hospital. Dean goes to head off the Hatchet Man, leaving Dirk alone with Stuart in the salt circle. Sam’s lock pick breaks and he has to figure out yet another way to get out of the store.  The ghost makes an appearance in the hospital room where Dirk and Stuart are, scaring Dirk so much that he runs away.

In what was an incredible piece of directing by Amyn Kaderali, the next scene has Hatchet Man chasing Dirk throughout the hospital, which directly parallels the Hatchet Man movie playing on the television in the hospital security guard office. The show perfectly cuts back and forth between the real-life chase and the movie chase sequence as both versions of the Hatchet Man close in on their targets.

Smart Sam makes an appearance in the next part of the episode when he puts cleaning chemicals into a Scooby Doo lunchbox to create a small bomb. He hurriedly puts it on the door hook, runs behind the counter with Samantha, and then BOOM! The two Sams excitedly look up to see that the plan worked with a shocked “Cool!” from each of them.

Courtesy of the CW

The Sams exit the shop and make their way to the hospital, where Jordan, the ghost possessing Hatchet Man, has chased Dirk down to the morgue where Dean finds him. Hatchet Man suddenly pops up from underneath a sheet and presses the button on the suit to say, “Time to slice and dice!”

Dean gives the ghost the choice to give up and go peacefully or to remain and fight Dean. Hatchet Man presses his button again and says that it is “Time to slice and dice!” Dean smiles, happy that the Hatchen Man made that choice.

The Sams arrive at the hospital and try to figure out how the ghost is managing to go to all different places. Samantha realizes that the keychain with the store keys used to be Jordan’s and has been where all the attacks have taken place. The two rush into the morgue just as Dean is about to be hit with an axe, and Dirk saves him. Dean then rescues Dirk in return and ends up in a Hatchet Man chokehold. Sam yells for Dean to toss the keychain off of Hatchet Man over to him. Sam tries to set the keys on fire, but it is not working fast enough as Dean is being slowly strangled by the ghost. Samantha grabs some ethyl alcohol off a table to use as an accelerant, and the keys burn causing the ghost to also go up in flames. The brothers explain to Samantha and Dirk that Jordan is gone and no longer a ghost and that everyone, including Stuart, is safe.

Our next to last scene is a classic broment while riding in Baby. Dean thanks Sam for making him get out of his bedroom and for helping him out of his funk. Sam implores Dean to not go back to hiding in his room when they get back to the bunker. He then tells Dean what we have wanted him to say since Dean was no longer possessed by Michael:

Sam: What happened with Michael… You said yes for me, for Jack, for your family. You did the right thing. What happened after, just because Michael was wearing your face doesn’t mean any of this was on you. I don’t blame you. No one blames you. You got to try and stop blaming yourself. Please.

Dean: I’m not going to get over it, okay? I’m just not. But you’re right. I’m not doing anybody any good by staying cooped up in my room, so… whatever you need, I’m there. All right, chief?

Dean finally needles out of Sam why he hates Halloween so badly. Surprisingly, his reasoning is actually a fairly normal traumatic childhood memory that many of us can relate to. While he was at a Halloween party in sixth grade, he accidentally threw up all over his crush because of nerves when they went to go bobbing for apples. Dean tells him that he has got to get over that and that next year, they are doing Halloween right. Dean starts spouting off all kinds of matching costumes they can wear including: Batman and Robin, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Shaggy and Scooby, and many more characters that we would love to see these two get dressed up as.

Courtesy of the CW

The episode ends with the hospital security guard making his rounds. He makes his way to the morgue and finds the knives and hatchets from earlier. He finally stumbles upon the life-sized Hatchet Man replica lying on the floor, and the scene goes to black with a voiceover of Hatchet Man saying evilly, “Trick or Treat!”

This whole episode was creepy and yet lighthearted and fun in a way that only Supernatural can pull off. I have to give all of my praise to the crew for this fantastic episode. The set design in the comic book store was incredible. It was a blast to try and locate all of the little call-backs and Easter eggs like the Hell Razer posters (“Hollywood Babylon”, season 2, anyone?), the Scooby Doo lunchbox, and the Red Hood cosplay suit. I have already mentioned how much I love the costume department for their work in this episode. I must also give all the kudos to the visual effects team for their hard work with the fake movie All Saints Day III, the Panthro action figure, and everything with the Hatchet Man. Of course, we also have to praise Davy Perez for such brilliant writing and Amyn Kaderali for giving us a classic 80’s horror movie feel within a Supernatural episode. It is always great to watch Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki utilize their comedic acting skills.

Seeing Dean let his inner fanboy out and Sam lovingly put up with Dean’s nerdy geek-outs is one of my favorite parts of this show that we hardly ever get to see. This episode is definitely one to remember!

Stay tuned next week for a brand new episode of Supernatural, Thursday November 8 at 8/7 EST on The CW.

‘The Flash’ Season 5, Episode 4 Recap: “News Flash”

0
Danielle Nicolet, Danielle Panabaker, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Candice Patton in ‘The Flash.’ Image courtesy of IMDB.

The first three episodes of this season’s The Flash have been great, but the latest episode, “News Flash,” was not exactly brimming with excitement.

We start off with a peek at the night of The Enlightenment. A young woman is documenting everything on her cell phone, including the moment Barry and Nora destroy the satellite. She appears to be hit by a piece of debris that knocks her phone from her hand. Nora then appears and saves her from a much larger piece. When the girl picks her phone back up, she notices something odd about it.

Back to the present, Iris is trying way too hard to win over her daughter. It’s kind of sad. Her attempt at breakfast leads to the smoke alarm going off and produces barely edible food. Nora gets a text from Sherloque asking the team to meet at S.T.A.R. Labs. She seems thankful for the opportunity to escape.

The fact that Cisco is not there (nor in this episode at all) is immediately written off as him staying at his parents’ house while he heals. Sherloque goes on to explain that he is working on finding out who Cicada is. But Ralph thinks explaining what is going on with the mask would make more sense. Sherloque decides reluctantly to humor Ralph and work with him.

The team, minus Ralph, Sherloque, and Cisco, heads to the softball field for the annual CCPD match against the Central City Fire Department. What is important here is something I pointed out before: without his powers, Barry has no athletic ability to speak of. There’s also an apparent lack of hand-eye coordination. They have him stuck in right field for a reason.

Grant Gustin in ‘The Flash.’ Image courtesy of IMDB.

In the stands, Nora talks about this app she downloaded called Spyn Zone, run by Spencer Young (the girl we saw at the beginning of the episode) that keeps the user updated on the goings on in the city. Cecile asks if the app is like Iris’ website, to which Nora somewhat agrees. But she says that it is more up-to-date. After some thinly veiled sniping between Nora and Iris, Nora leaves to get some food. Shortly after walking away, she gets another notification from Spyn Zone and then her eyes flash purple.

A man walks onto the field, and Cecile can tell that something is weird. She yells at someone to stop him. Nora comes running up in time to grab the man’s backpack and throw it up into the air where it explodes. Both her eyes and those of the man (a CCPD officer) flash purple and neither person has any idea what happened. We see Spencer Young at the scene, videoing everything before walking away with a smug smile. The team is surprised to see that Spyn Zone had already covered the story within minutes of it happening. Iris and Caitlin worry that Cicada may see it and come after Nora.

This leads Iris to talk to Spencer since they are acquaintances. She tells her about the new person killing metas and asks her to stop writing about XS. After assuming she is called XS because she is “extra small,” Spencer refuses to stop writing about what she wants and assumes Iris is jealous, since her work is so much more popular.

When a fire breaks out at Central City Picture News, Barry and Nora race over to put it out. Barry walks Nora through the steps, because she has never done this before. Unfortunately, Spencer had been waiting for them and, with Barry taking a long time talking to Nora, she types a headline into her phone and swipes it up. The message appears on an electronic billboard, reading, “The Flash Spotted In Las Vegas.” Immediately, Barry’s eyes flash purple and he takes off for Sin City. This leaves Nora to put out the fire on her own with her mother talking her through what to do.

When they regroup, Iris points out that Spencer admitted wanting to get famous by making XS famous. Nora seems really upset about her mom talking to Spencer. Having already referred to Spencer as cute, it seems that Nora may have a bit of a crush. That is verified when they fit Nora with a watch that will tell whether or not Spencer is a meta once she pushes a button. When she meets Spencer though, she doesn’t push the button as mutual flirting ensues. (As an aside, I like that both Barry and Oliver have kids that are part of the LGBTQ+ community. I wonder if they will bond over that someday…assuming Barry doesn’t go missing and Oliver gets out of prison.) When Iris intervenes, she finally pushes the button and they find out that Spencer is not a meta.

Iris tries to tell Nora that she needs to avoid Spencer even if she is a super cute, non-meta. When she says that she is trying to protect her, Nora flies off the handle and we finally learn why she is so cold to her mom. In the future, Iris put a meta-dampening chip in Nora to block her powers. Until a few months prior, Nora didn’t even know she had powers.

Ralph sciences his way to finding out the type of mask that Cicada wears and then goes to a local factory where they are used. He figures that whoever was wearing it would be their man, but as it turns out, every worker at the factory uses those masks. The workers at two nearby facilities and the fourteen total in the midwest area also wear masks. So, thousands of employees wear the masks and they aren’t the only company that uses them. Little do they know, they are actually at the right plant, and Cicada takes notice.

Sherloque gets curious about the mask and decides to test a theory. He takes one of the masks back to the lab and asks Caitlin to punch him in the chest as hard as she can while he wears the mask. The resulting injury causes him to sound just like Cicada when he breathes through the mask.

A bomb sighting at Central City Stadium leads to the place getting evacuated, and Nora and Barry head over to find the bomb. Neither one finds anything though. Iris points out the timestamp on Spencer’s post about the bomb, which was five minutes before the first call even came into the police station. Somehow, they figure out that the app’s headlines are hypnotizing people. Unfortunately, they realize this moment too late: Spencer is there and swipes a headline onto the jumbotron that reads “XS Kills Flash!”

Nora proceeds to try to do just that. They start a high-speed chase through the stadium that ends when Barry is inexplicably stopped and drawn backwards until he and Nora run into each other. The crash gives Nora the upper hand as she sits atop Barry, phasing through his chest to presumably grab his heart. Iris shows up just in time to shoot her with a tranquilizer dart. From there, it’s only a quick look around the stadium to find Spencer, which kind of makes me wonder why they didn’t see her when they were looking for a bomb. They must not have looked that hard.

Sherloque finally reveals what he learned from being punched in the chest. The man they are looking for sounds like he does when he breathes through the mask because his lungs are injured. When Nora helped punch the satellite, the pieces had a different trajectory that turned someon other than David Hersch into Cicada. Since the satellite was flooded with dark matter because of Devoe, the pieces were capable of transferring power to whatever they hit. In this case, that includes new Cicada and his dagger.

In a sweet gesture, Sherloque gives all the credit to Ralph for following his instincts about the mask. Wondering if dark matter could be applied to non-living things, they check Spencer’s phone and realize that instead of making more metas, they managed to make meta-tech, putting meta abilities into the hands of anyone holding the item. As much as I didn’t care for the Spencer storyline, I did enjoy this turn of events.

Once everything had calmed down, Iris apologized to Nora for suppressing her powers in the future, but thinks it was the right thing to do. She does not know why she did it, but she assumes that it was for a good reason. This leaves Nora furious and when Barry asks what’s going on, she tattles like the child she is. To her dismay, Barry sides with Iris and says that the reason, whatever it was, was a good one and that he would stand by her. In angsty teen fashion, she runs off, probably slamming a door behind her. She goes to her grandparents’ place, and Joe and Cecile welcome her with open arms.

The last thing we get to see is Orin and he is not looking too good. He is in so much pain that he can barely stand. He does realize he can crush some sort of metal with his bare hand though. However, even that realization is not enough to distract him for long from the searing pain of the gaping wound in his chest. Judging from the size of it, I have to assume his own dagger was what caused that wound, pushing the dark matter inside him.

I’m not sure if we will get to see more of that next week, but we will get to see Troy James take on the role of Peter Merkel, aka Rag Doll. For those that don’t know, Troy was a contortionist on the last season of America’s Got Talent. He didn’t make it into the finals, but it looks like he landed a pretty sweet gig all the same. Check out next week’s promo to see what he can do.

‘This is Us’ Season 3, Episode 6 Recap: “Kamsahamnida”

0

This week’s This is Us episode gave us one of the show’s better Pearson “talks” and dived deeper into the relationship between Kevin and Randall. As always, if you have not yet caught up stop reading here to avoid spoilers.

The episode begins with Kate calling everyone to let them know that the IVF worked and she and Toby are expecting a baby. The most hilarious response comes from Randall, who squeals higher than Madison at the news and begins dancing in his kitchen screaming, “I can’t believe it! My sister’s having a baby!” When he asks to congratulate Toby, however, Kate has to share the news with everyone about Toby’s depression. Kevin offers to come out and help Kate but she explains there’s nothing he would be able to do. After all of the phone calls, Kate goes into the bedroom to check on Toby. She tells him that she is going to take their dog Audio for a walk and invites Toby to go along. He declines, rolling over and staring at the wall.

12-year old Kevin and Randall are in their living room playing a video game. After Kevin wins, he begins tackling a helpless Randall to show off as Kate watches from the couch, unamused. When Jack comes home, Rebecca notices that he has a black eye. He tells her he was boxing at the gym. The kids, intrigued, want to know more but Rebecca sends them to set the table for dinner. She turns to Jack, upset that he’s not just punching a bag anymore, he’s boxing people. He explains it is nothing while Rebecca worries about the fact he could eventually get brain damage because some boxers have. “The guy that gave me this, that tagged me, his name’s Stuart,” Jack reassures her. “Okay? Guys named Stuart don’t give you brain damage.” Regardless, Rebecca makes him promise her to stop boxing other people and stick with the bag.

Beth is calling to check on resumes that she sent out as Randall is in their bedroom trying to decide on a shirt to wear to church. When Tess and Annie choose different colors for their dad, he says he’s choosing between Paul and John (a reference to The Beatles). He turns to Beth: “Ringo!” who looks at him like he is crazy and lets him know, “The hell I’m Ringo.” Annie asks why he’s going to church in Philadelphia and he tells her that because he’s running for office in Philadelphia he needs to connect with the people. After he describes how much he loves cheesesteak, Annie asks if they can talk about the girls now. Randall and Beth say of course and Tess begins explaining how they are way behind in selling their Girl Scout cookies. Their biggest sale was Beth’s office but now they don’t have that. Randall begins to offer to help but Beth tells him no, she will handle it. She begins telling the girls to get ready and make posters and tells them to ask Deja if she wants to help.

Kate is in the park with Audio. She’s on the phone with Rebecca discussing Toby as Audio is playing. He runs to a trash bag and begins eating something. Kate panics and gets off the phone and rushes over. She can’t tell what it is he ate but from what little she could see she knows it wasn’t food.

Kevin is staring at the picture of his father and the woman from Vietnam. He tells Zoe he wishes he knew more about the woman, especially because of the necklace. Zoe, who hadn’t heard him, takes off her earphones and closes her laptop. She has finally finished working on her documentary and is now at the point of waiting to hear back about showing it at festivals. Kevin tells her that everyone will want it and they need to celebrate, dropping Jimmy Kimmel’s name. She tells him thanks but no thanks, she has a tradition of relaxing in a hotel room when she finishes something. He excitedly invites himself along to which she tells him it’s a solo thing. “I can’t have your obsession with that photo raining all over my 800-thread-count sheet parade.”

12-year old Randall walks into the kitchen at night where Jack is drying dishes. Randall tells him there is a new kid at school, Dylan, who is bullying him and he wants to learn to box. He doesn’t want to fight but he wants to be able to protect himself. Jack says they need to talk to Rebecca and then Randall’s school, but Randall says he doesn’t want to be known as a snitch. He just wants to know that he can protect himself.

Randall is at Councilman Brown’s church. Brown is invited up to read scripture but before he does, he comments on Randall’s attendance. Brown puts Randall on the spot for running against him and condescendingly welcomes him as the church whispers to each other.

Beth, Deja, Tess, and Annie are carrying their cookies and supplies across a parking lot. The girls are grumpy about the parking spot and Beth tells them a packed parking lot equals more customers. When they get to the store, however, another troop has set up to sell. Tess angrily says she told Beth they needed to get there earlier and Beth says it’s okay before they leave to go find another place to sell at.

Kevin calls Randall to talk. Randall explains he’s in Philly and Kevin immediately offers to go. Randall begs him not to, worried about his movie star presence and its effect on the campaign, but Kevin tells him that Randall knows he doesn’t respect boundaries. Giving up, Randall agrees to text him a place that they can meet.

Kate is trying to get Audio to eat. Toby walks in and wonders what’s wrong with the dog. He sees that he’s not eating the bacon that Kate is feeding him and she explains what happened at the park. He asks why she wasn’t watching him and she explains that she shouldn’t have been on the phone but she was. She apologizes and walks out. Toby sighs: “I didn’t meant to make you feel bad.”

Jack is showing 12-year old Randall how to box in their living room. They are having a good time finding out that Randall is a southpaw until Rebecca walks in on them. They know they are in trouble.

Randall walks into a Korean restaurant where Kevin is meeting and greeting the customers. Randall is amazed. They sit down and Kevin shows him the picture of Jack and the Vietnamese woman. Randall wonders why Kevin wants to know all of this now. Kevin makes an analogy using old wallpaper peeling off. He says it never occurred to them that there was more behind the wallpaper until it began peeling off and that it was the same with him. “I started peeling,” he explains. Randall says he’s also curious but Jack didn’t want them to know about Vietnam. As they talk, the waiter brings them free drinks. It turns out that Kevin’s show The Manny was very popular in South Korea. Randall, suddenly realizing an opportunity, brings Kevin to his campaign headquarters. He discovers that the Koreans in the area are not all registered to vote, and if they can get them to register and vote for Randall by using Kevin’s fame he can win against Brown.

Kate is at the vet talking on the phone with Rebecca. The vet has discovered that Audio ate a rock and the options are surgery or waiting for him to poop it out. Kate is very worried and asks Rebecca’s advice. She tells her to take him home so that she will feel better and if anything happens she would be able to get him back to the vet. Kate tells her she will need her to move into their building if their “maybe baby” turns out to be a real baby. Rebecca tells her that as much as she appreciates it, it’s now Kate’s turn to make the decisions for her family and hope they’re the right ones.

In the past, Rebecca is upset with Jack for teaching Randall to box. He tells her about Randall being bullied and how he didn’t want to make it worse. She tells him they are going to call Randall’s principal and get it taken care of.

Beth and the girls have set up a display at an empty mall. Tess tells Annie that no one is there because everything is closed. When a customer finally walks up it turns out that Beth does not have the “swiper” to take the man’s credit card payment. Beth offers to take his information down but the man tells her no. Tess complains that they’re not doing as good as her friend Riley, telling Beth that she sucks and Riley’s mom is better than her. Beth loses her temper and screams at Tess to shut up. The girls stare at her in silence as she tells them they’re leaving.

Getting off the phone with the principal, Rebecca tells Jack that there is no new kid in Randall’s class and no one is bullying him. She wants to talk to him to find out what’s going on but Jack asks her to let him since he is the one that Randall lied to. He wants to know why. Before leaving, Jack explains that boxing helps him deal with things that he can’t explain to her.

Toby is on the couch when he gets a text from Kate. He gets up, takes a shower and gets dressed. He is trying his best to function normally.

Beth walks out of her bathroom to find Deja waiting to speak to her. Deja tells her that her mom lost a lot of jobs and it was really hard on her too. Beth tries to reassure her that she’s fine as Deja listens, clearly knowing that Beth is far from fine. Deja tells her that Randall loves Beth “like he’s in a Disney movie or something, like he hears tiny forest animals singing or playing kazoos or something whenever you walk into a room. But if you’re sad, then you should talk to him. He’ll tell you you’re exceptional and he’ll say it so easy that you’ll believe it.” Beth tells her she’s really good at the talks and Deja answers that it comes easy after living with the Pearsons for a while. Tess and Annie come in and Beth hugs and apologizes to them. Tess apologizes as well.

Randall and Kevin are campaigning in the Korean neighborhood, attempting to register voters. A young man comes up and accuses Randall of using his brother to get Koreans to vote for him even though he knows nothing about the Koreans and probably won’t have anything to do with them after the election. The man tries to get his grandmother to leave but Randall follows him. He explains that no, he doesn’t know the neighborhood but he knows what he saw on his way in and he will help them if they will let him know what they want and need.

Kate and Audio arrive home. Toby, waiting on the couch, gets up and asks how he’s doing. Kate tells him what’s going on. She is surprised but impressed that Toby felt good enough to get dressed. He tells her he doesn’t, he thought getting ready would boost his mood but it didn’t. He tells her he’s worried that she’ll leave him eventually since he can’t take care of her. He tells her he tried and then heads back to bed. Audio jumps up, wanting to go outside, and Kate gets excited. She asks Toby to come on a walk with them but he seems set on going to lay down. She asks him, hopeful, and when that doesn’t work she tells him, “I think you should go on a walk with us.” That change, from a questionable and hopeful request to an instruction, gets Toby’s attention and he agrees to go.

Randall and Kevin arrive back at the campaign headquarters. Kevin talks about how Randall found William, which led to buying his building and then his campaign. He says when Randall has something inside him he wants to do he just goes for it no matter what anyone thinks. Kevin explains that the situation is the same for him in regards to Jack. “You need to peel the wallpaper,” says Randall, telling him that he hopes he finds what he needs.

Jack walks into Randall’s room. He tells him that he and Rebecca are confused about why Randall lied. Randall explains that he wanted Jack to show him how to box but he knew without a good reason he wouldn’t. He tells him he wanted to learn because he wanted to be more like Jack. Kevin, Randall says, got his toughness from Jack but he didn’t. Even though he knows he’s Jack’s son, something like this makes it obvious to him that Kevin is his “son-son” and inherited things that Randall couldn’t. Jack tells him “you are my ‘son-son’” and that Randall has something better than knowing how to punch people. He is smart and his brain will be his secret weapon.

Randall is at his campaign headquarters when the young Korean man from earlier in the day walks in. He asks how many voters they registered. He tells Randall about how impressed his grandmother was with him. She had never voted before, initially because she was not allowed in Korea and then because none of the politicians cared about her when she came to America. It was Randall who convinced her to register to vote for the first time. He tells Randall that he has a lot of experience with campaigning and wants to be his campaign manager. Randall asks his name. He tells him his name is Jae-won although most people who aren’t Korean call him John. Randall tells him he’s happy to have him and calls him Jae-won.

Jack tells Rebecca that he is amazed at how he went in to Randall’s room wanting to ground him but when he left he wanted to hug him as tight as he could. Rebecca gives him a gift, headgear. She tells him that if boxing is that important to him she wants him to be safe about it. He begins telling her a story about boxing with his brother when they were younger, and it’s apparent from her expression that this is not something he talks about often. Pleased, she tells him to teach her how to box since everybody else knows, which he does.

Randall walks into Councilman Brown’s office. He tells him that he made it very clear how he feels about Randall at church but, getting the last word in, Randall tells him that he has a campaign manager and he’ll win the Koreans.

Kate and Toby are walking in the park. She tells Toby she’s never going to leave him because she is there for better or worse. She explains how everyone has always taken care of her and gotten her through things and now it’s her turn to take care of him. She is not leaving him, ever. As they share their special moment, Audio finally poops and they happily celebrate.

Kevin shows up at Zoe’s hotel. He apologizes for interrupting her private time. He explains he never knew how to talk to Jack and gives her an application for a visa to Vietnam because he needs to know more and he wants her to go with him. She says yes.

Beth is waiting for Randall as he comes home. He is happy and excited about Jae-won but he can tell something’s wrong. Beth finally tells him that she has not been okay since she got fired. He wonders why she didn’t say anything and she explains she didn’t want to hear him tell her how great she is because she didn’t feel like she was. A light bulb goes off in his head and he asks her to join his campaign. He gives her examples of how, as a team, they accomplished seemingly impossible things. She makes him promise that he’s not offering her a pity job, and he assures her that he’s not. “You really do hear forest animals with kazoos when you see me, don’t you?” she asks him. Randall doesn’t know what she’s talking about but Beth ultimately agrees, telling him, “Let’s win you an election.”

All in all, this was one of my favorite episodes so far this season. From Deja’s speech to Beth to Toby’s attempts to deal with his depression to young Randall explaining how he feels since he’s not Jack’s biological son, every moment was real and heartfelt. This was one of those episodes that reminds me why I love this show so much.

This is Us airs Tuesdays at 9/8 central on NBC.
