Five Reasons to Love Max From ‘Roswell, New Mexico’

Courtesy of The CW.

With the new show Roswell, New Mexico came a brand new cast and story, which is a ways off from the high school setting of its predecessor, the original Roswell. For long-time fans of the original television show and the book series, there were certainly some big shoes to fill as it relates to well-known and loved characters.

Here at Nerds and Beyond, we can all wholeheartedly agree that Max Evans 2.0 (portrayed by Nathan Parsons) has already won us over. He may not be perfect (and honestly, who is?), but he is so captivating that one would be hard-pressed to find an excuse not to love him.

So what exactly makes Max such an alluring character? Let us show you our five reasons below.

1. He is portrayed by Nathan Parsons

Courtesy of The CW

Everyone has their own subtle nuances that make them who they are, and Parsons truly brings each one of Max’s to life so perfectly that it is hard not to believe in all aspects of his character. Everything about him draws you in, from the way he delivers heartfelt monologues to his impressive mastery of micro-expressions. He also has incredible on-screen chemistry with Jeanine Mason, which makes their scenes together exceptionally mesmerizing.

2. His protective nature

Courtesy of The CW.

Max is a fierce and dedicated protector. In just a handful of episodes, we have already seen him make huge sacrifices to protect those that he loves, and he will no doubt continue to do so throughout the rest of the season. When it comes to his family, Max does everything in his power to protect their secret in order to keep Isobel and Michael safe. He did—admittedly—slip up, but it was for the purpose of saving Liz’s life. Afterward, his protection shifted heavily to Liz as well because his siblings grew aggressively wary and used cruel intimidation tactics against her. Since Liz’s resurrection, we have seen Max dealing with fits of anger, most of which have been sparked by threats to the safety of those that he loves.

3. He is not afraid to show his emotions

Courtesy of The CW

Max Evans wears his heart on his sleeve for those that he cares deeply about (see: Liz Ortecho), which is not exactly a common trait for lead male characters today. It is refreshing, to say the least, to see a budding relationship with so much raw and open honesty about feelings (Liz still has some catching up to do, but it is all in due time.) Again, kudos to Parsons for really shining in every scene he is in! Each episode thus far has included some sort of heartfelt, emotional monologue from Max, and we are eagerly looking forward to many more as the season continues.

4. His love for Liz and the respect that he gives her

Courtesy of The CW

Max may be head over heels for Liz, with a crush that he has been harboring for over a decade, but he is firm in making it clear that he will not take advantage of her for the sake of getting what he desires. In the pilot episode, it appears that Max and Liz are about to kiss, but he holds back as he solemnly explains, “What you’re feeling is an echo of what I feel for you.” Max is not in this for his own gain; when we eventually (and hopefully) see these two finally get together, it will undoubtedly be an intense and emotionally gratifying scene.

5. His actions are determined by “doing what is right”

Courtesy of The CW.

Max, as far as we have seen, is steadfast in his nature to do the right thing when he finds himself in difficult situations (see: Point 4). When there was no electricity at the hospital, Max took it upon himself to use his powers to fix the mess that he had made. It was certainly a risk to do so, as he and his siblings have made it abundantly clear that their lives will be reduced to becoming science experiments if they are ever found out by the wrong people. However, he could not stand idly by and do nothing when a young boy was on the verge of dying. His conversation with Kyle later in that same episode was very telling, as Kyle made it clear that he became a doctor to be a hero. Max, on the other hand, does it for the people he helps and saves rather than for the reputation it gives him. “But glory isn’t why you became a cop, is it?” “No.”

Max Evans, we love you.

REVIEW: ‘Driven’ Starring Richard Speight, Jr. Premieres at Oxford Film Festival

0

Since the announcement of the Kickstarter campaign for the movie Driven, fans of actor Richard Speight, Jr. have been eagerly anticipating the movie’s release. The film’s director, Glenn Payne, and writer/co-star, Casey Dillard, have engaged fans through every step of the movie’s progress via their social media accounts. From the moment filming began in Tupelo, MS, in January 2018 to the film’s world premiere Saturday night in Oxford, MS, Payne and Dillard have made sure that Driven‘s fan base was along for the ride.

Being a resident of Tupelo for 14 years now, and being what you might call somewhat of a big Speight fan, I was beyond excited to know that Driven would be filming in my town. I was a little less excited when Speight brought a rare winter storm along with him during filming, but excited nonetheless. (Payne and Dillard remarked on the cold spell during the Q&A that followed the film, saying that they would never look at being cold the same again.)

I knew I wanted to see the movie as soon as it was released. I also knew that Payne and Dillard had previously shown work at the Oxford Film Festival in Oxford, MS, a college town less than an hour away. I began regularly checking the festival’s website in hopes that Driven would be shown. And as luck would have it, Driven was chosen for the 2019 Oxford Film Festival, and I bought my ticket!

I arrived at the Malco Cinema theater in Oxford, the location of the Festival, and headed straight to the information booth where I was instructed on where I needed to go and when. I had some spare time, so the ladies at the desk told me I should look around or grab some food. I decided to head to the merchandise table where I bought myself a pair of official Oxford Film Festival socks. (One can never have too many socks.) And then I headed to the concession stand to buy some food while I waited.

After a while longer, I saw Payne speaking to several people and walked up and introduced myself. He immediately began looking for Dillard and took me over to introduce me to her. Both were as personable and friendly as their online personas. After speaking with them for a moment, I left them in my normal awkward fashion and went to get in line for the movie.

Then, it was movie time! First, attendees were treated to a short film called Jesus & Jimmy Ray. The synopsis of the film was described on the Festival’s website as follows:

In this Southern Gothic dark comedy, Dinah, a young Mississippi kindergarten teacher, holds her abusive stepfather hostage with the intent to kill him – but only after he accepts Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

When I first read that, I was a bit wary of this film. But my fears were completely unfounded. As outlandish as the premise sounds, the short was one of the funniest things I have ever watched. And the twist at the end was a very nice and unexpected touch.

Finally, it was time for Driven, which Dillard described as “Hocus Pocus meets Collateral meets Fallen.” Speight introduced the film via a video clip, speaking of how special the Oxford Film Festival was to him (his own short America 101 premiered there) and his relationship with Payne and Dillard.

IMDb.com describes lists Driven‘s synopsis as:

Emerson Graham’s nights as a cab driver are filled with annoyances and inconveniences, but until tonight, never attacks and disappearances. After picking up a mysterious passenger, her evening goes from working a job to performing a quest as they must race against the clock to defeat a force of evil. The meter is running.

Dillard plays Emerson, a woman who spends her nights working as a driver for a rideshare company. On a seemingly uneventful night, Emerson picks up Roger (played by Speight) and is soon wrapped up in the middle of his family business. Being part comedy, there are several gags that had the audience in stitches. Perhaps the funniest was a continued gag involving aromatherapy and Roger’s aversion to it. Oh, and yes — we do finally find out what #turdspoonforever means for anyone who follows along with the movie’s Twitter account.

There were a few jumps, although not so much in the super scary sense as it was simply unexpected. Dillard shines as Emerson, and she and Speight played brilliantly off of each other. “Roger” may be my personal favorite role that Speight has ever played. His acting, Dillard’s writing, and Payne’s directing combined to create just the right balance for the film.

The film was followed by a short Q&A, where the film’s crew discussed the origin of the film, the hardships of filming in a car, and the freezing cold weather during shooting. Before the Q&A ended, one audience member shared that the film did not seem like an amateur project, and she was right. It was incredible.

Countdown to ‘Captain Marvel’: A Spotlight on Natasha Romanoff

0

We are currently less than one month away from the release of Captain Marvel. This film is one of the most highly anticipated and most talked about Marvel films among fans, because Carol Danvers is going to be the new face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we move into the next phase. Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, which is also International Women’s Day.

And while this is the first film in the MCU to have a female lead, there have been many badass women in the Marvel Universe over the years. We will be highlighting just a few of them, over the next few weeks leading up to the premiere.

Scarlett Johansson in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018). Courtesy of IMDb and Marvel Studios.

Next up on our list is Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson. Formerly a soviet agent and one of the most skilled assassins and spies in the world, Natasha eventually became a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and later one of the original six Avengers. She first appeared in the MCU in Iron Man 2.

Here are some of our favorite moments featuring Black Widow:

1. “Wanna help? Keep the car running.”

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

This is the first time we really got to see Natasha in action. In this scene from Iron Man 2, she makes her way through a corridor of armed guards, picking them off one by one. This fight sequence was the first of many where we see just what a skilled and lethal fighter she truly is.

2. “Did I step on your moment?”

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

In this scene from Captain America: The Winter Solider, we see Natasha’s powers of subterfuge. Hydra has overtaken S.H.I.E.L.D., and the agency is on the brink of collapse. Black Widow infiltrates the facility, fooling Alexander Pierce and assists in putting an end to his plans.

3.”She’s not alone.”

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

The battle in Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War could be described as nothing short of intense. In this scene, Proxima Midnight is closing in on Scarlet Witch during the battle of Wakanda, telling the Avenger that she is going to die alone. Suddenly, we hear Natasha tell her clearly, “She’s not alone.” Natasha joins forces with Okoye and Wanda to take down Proxima Midnight.

4. “It’s gonna be fun.”

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

Infinity War was not the first time Natasha had faced a formidable alien threat. This moment comes from The Avengers, when the chitauri invaded New York City. During the fight, Natasha has a plan to get onto one of the flying vehicles the chitauri are using. She tells Captain America that she could “use a boost.” When he asks her if she’s sure, she tells him, “Yeah. It’s gonna be fun.” Moments later, she propels herself into the air and onto one of the passing vehicles. This moment really highlighted her fearlessness in the face of a fight.

5. Tricking the Trickster

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

In another scene from The Avengers, Natasha comes face to face with the God of Mischief himself, Loki. She stares at him in fear as he describes to her his plan to have Clint — who he had brainwashed at the time — kill her in terrible ways, before Loki kills him in turn. She turns away from his cell, seemingly horrified at what she’s hearing. However, we learn moments later, this was all a clever ruse she used to get Loki to reveal his true plans.

Stay tuned for the remainder of our series highlighting more of the amazing Marvel women as we countdown the arrival of Captain Marvel!

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Season Six, Episode Five Recap: “A Tale of Two Bandits”

Photo Credit: Image courtesy of Vivian Zink/NBC

It’s the most wonderful time of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine year! No, I’m not talking about the annual “Halloween Heist.” I’m talking about the annual return of Craig Robinson as Doug Judy — Peralta’s nemesis/best friend.

But “A Tale of Two Bandits” provides a necessary twist on the expected Doug Judy antics. This time, Terry comes to Peralta, because cars are being stolen across the city using Doug Judy’s signature techniques, which is shocking (somehow) to Peralta, because Doug Judy has promised to stop stealing and walk the straight and narrow. Terry calls Doug Judy’s mother (Peralta’s mode of communication with Doug Judy), keeping up the backstory of Judy as an architect for “Black NASA” and Peralta as Judy’s assistant “Mangy Carl” that Doug Judy rescued from a life on the streets. Unfortunately, they are informed that Doug Judy is dead.

They attend Doug Judy’s funeral, where they meet his grieving sister Trudy Judy (played by Nailed It’s Nicole Byer). Trudy waxes on about the tragic and clandestine backstory of “Mangy Carl” (and his failed mulch butt implants) and convinces Peralta to sing during the service. Peralta belts out an improvised (and awful) tune, but while at the altar, he spots Doug Judy listening in the back of the church. Peralta and Terry confront Doug Judy, who confesses that he faked his death because Stefano, a notorious mobster, has placed a hit on him for stealing his classic Ferrari, which Doug Judy claims he did not do. Peralta believes that Doug Judy has changed, but Terry does not. So they make a bet: whoever is wrong about Doug Judy has to do one hundred thousand pushups.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Nine-Nine heads to their favorite cop bar, Shaw’s, where they discover that a squadron of firemen (led by Rob Riggle) has taken over the bar and is trying to claim it as theirs. They agree to a drink off — whoever has the highest tab by closing time wins and gets to keep the bar. The rules are: 1. You have to finish the whole drink before you can order another, and 2. if you puke, you’re disqualified. Holt refuses to participate and leaves, claiming the squad’s attachment to Shaw’s is silly, because the bar is a dive, and their only wine is something called “Charbonnay.”

Terry and Peralta follow Doug Judy to a Bar Mitzvah before taking him in for questioning, when they get the call that someone has been picked up for stealing another car using Doug Judy’s moves. They head to the precinct, and Peralta and Doug Judy find out that it was Trudy Judy who was busted stealing the car. She claims that she only resorted to stealing cars to pay off her nursing school student loans, and she picked up Doug Judy’s moves from reading his journals. She claims to have already dropped off Stefano’s Ferrari at her fence, a man named Dallas (“Never trust a man named after a place,” Peralta says), but Peralta arranges a meet up where Terry (wearing a wire) will accompany her.

At the meet up, Trudy Judy begins flirting with Terry in front of Dallas and stroking his chest. This angers Doug Judy who is extremely protective of his sister, so he storms out of his and Peralta’s hiding place and spoils the sting, which allows Dallas to escape. They have the Ferrari though, but their planned exchange with Stefano falls through when a car explodes. In the aftermath, they realize that Trudy Judy has escaped as well, when she calls Doug Judy and tells him that she planned it all. It turns out that Trudy Judy is more of a criminal mastermind than Doug Judy ever was.

Back at Shaw’s, the Nine-Nine squad is extremely drunk (we get to see “nine-drink Amy” who speaks French!) and about to admit defeat when Holt returns, persuaded by Rosa’s seventeen drunken voicemail messages. He chugs down three bottles of “Charbonnay” and wins the competition for his team. The firemen admit defeat and leave, taking their autographed Denis Leary photo with them. Captain Holt apologizes for not being there for his squad for something that they felt was important, but as he is commending them, he vomits.

The episode closes with Terry on his 6,922nd pushup.

One Tree Hill fans will no doubt recognize a heartthrob from their past when Chad Michael Murray joins the cast of Riverdale in a major recurring role as the leader of the cult “The Farm.”

Fans of the hit series have been wondering for some time about the man called “Edgar,” who runs the cult that has so completely absorbed Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) and now has absorbed the captives from the Sisters of Quiet Mercy Convent. There is no end to the intrigue with this show.

Murray shared his excitement on Twitter on February 8, along with an E! News article about his role, telling fans to “Hang on tight coz it’s gonna be a wild ride.”

There has been no word yet as to which episode “Edgar” will finally make his appearance, but assurances are that it will be this season!

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

Jared Padalecki Contender for SpoilerTv’s ‘Performer of the Month’

I have been really impressed with Jared Padalecki‘s performances this season on Supernatural. Apparently, I’m not the only one, because SpoilerTV.com has added him to the list of contenders for January’s “Readers’ Choice Performer of the Month,” specifically for this season’s twelfth episode, “Prophet and Loss.”  Supernatural fans will remember this as the episode where Sam and Castiel try to talk Dean out of sacrificing himself to rid the world, and his mind, of the archangel Michael.

Sam struggled the entire episode to contain his emotions until the end, where he stumbled between anger and despair trying to convince Dean not to go through with his plan. First punching his brother, and then clinging to him in desperation, Padalecki’s performance was gut-wrneching and intense and believable as the younger brother fought to reason with his stubborn sibling.

Image courtesy of The CW/Warner Bros.

Padalecki is among several heavy hitters vying for the title. Others on the list include Candice Patton as Iris Allen on CW’s The Flash, Katie Cassidy Rogers as Laurel Lance/Black Siren on Arrow, and Melissa Benoist as Supergirl on the show of the same name.

Be sure to check out the list and vote for your fave — but keep in mind, this is for a specific performance, so be sure you have watched the episode!

The poll will be open until Monday, February 11, at 6 p.m. EST.  Results will not be shown until after the conclusion of the poll.  Click here to vote!

Video: Second Deleted Scene From ‘Timeless’ Finale Revealed

0

The writing team responsible for Sony Pictures Television’s Timeless has released another deleted scene from the series finale. Last week, fans were given the challenge of accumulating 10,000 retweets in exchange for the first deleted scene.

Check out the latest reveal below:

In the second half of the finale, Agent Christopher and Connor Mason discovered that Emma was seemingly successful in taking down the Time Team in 1950. The only way to save the team was with a time machine, which was not an option for the two of them when the Lifeboat was already on a mission and the Mothership was in the hands of Rittenhouse. A bit later, Agent Christopher showed up at Emma’s secret hideout with the one and only Benjamin Cahill.

The deleted scene shows what occurred between these two events: Agent Christopher visited Cahill in jail with a tactfully worded plea. Using Cahill’s weakness for his daughter as a pawn, Agent Christopher explained that Emma had taken over Rittenhouse and killed Lucy. The only way to save her was to use the Mothership to go back in time on a rescue mission. To do that, she needed to know where Rittenhouse’s secret hideouts (and subsequently Emma) were located.

This scene provided an explanation as to how exactly Agent Christopher was able to enlist Cahill on their mission; however, his surprise appearance without this added scene had much more of an impact during the episode.

As per the tweet, it appears that there is still one more deleted scene to come. #ClockBlockers can most likely expect for this to be shared by the Writer’s Room soon. Follow @TheTimelessRoom on Twitter for more updates!
