Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Season 2 of ‘Prodigal Son’ As Series Regular

In an exclusive reveal from TVLine, it’s been confirmed that Oscar winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones will join the Prodigal Son cast as a season 2 regular! Zeta-Jones’ role will be an “on screen foil” for Michael Sheen’s serial killer.

She will be appearing in the latter half of season 2 as Dr. Vivian Capshaw, Claremont Psychiatric’s resident MD. As part of the season 2 plot, Martin is assigned to infirmary duty where Dr. Capshaw enjoys giving him menial tasks such as cleaning bedpans and mopping the floor. However, she starts to see him in a new light (which is not a good thing) when Martin proves valuable in treating patients.

In FOX’s official press release, Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, FOX Entertainment shared the following: “An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen. I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in a season that is bound to raise the bar set by an outstanding Season One.”

We can’t wait to see Zeta-Jones in her new role opposite Michael Sheen! Prodigal Son returns to FOX on January 12 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. C.

Mike Shinoda Offering to Produce Songs From Fans Live on Twitch!

0

With the end of 2020 and the start of a new year, Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park/Fort Minor) wants to try something a little different on his Twitch channel. After dozens of live streams over the past year giving fans the opportunity to watch him create new tracks, Mike is now offering to take fan submissions of their own original songs and produce them live on Twitch!

There are a few conditions for Mike to look at a fan/artist’s track:

  • The track must be the artist’s own original work
  • The artist can contribute vocals and one instrument (i.e., there must be a basic framework for him to work with, but the track must still be “unproduced”)
  • Mike will not do vocals over the track

This is not a formal contest! If you want Mike to take a look at your track, post it (or a link to it) on Twitter or Instagram using #ShinodaProduceMe and make sure to participate in Mike’s chat on Twitch when he live streams (he currently streams Monday through Friday around 1 p.m. PST).

While Mike will have the final say in which tracks he produces, his Twitch community will serve as his A&R division (affectionately nicknamed his “#A&Rmy”), scouting for interesting songs and artists on social media using the hashtag above and promoting them in the Twitch chat for Mike to see! Make sure to post your track and make some noise in Mike’s Twitch chat during his live streams for your chance!

Looking Back on the Best Rescues From FOX’s ‘9-1-1’

0

Throughout the course of its three seasons thus far, FOX’s procedural drama 9-1-1 has been a nonstop ride full of epic, unbelievable, and some downright baffling calls for Station 118 and the rest of LA’s first responders. Bobby, Athena, and the others have found themselves tasked with pulling off challenging rescues time and time again, all in the name of saving lives. Audiences tuning in often find themselves on the edges of their seats waiting to make sure that both the civilians and first responders alike survive each episode’s latest disaster.

As the eve of the fourth season of 9-1-1 is rapidly approaching, we’ve taken the time to reflect back on some of our favorite rescues (both large and small) that each of our characters have been involved in throughout seasons 1-3.

Bobby Nash
Courtesy of FOX.

Captain Bobby Nash is the glue that holds Station 118 together; he remains an integral pillar in the strength of his team despite what he’s been through. As a leader, Bobby has often taken the heaviest burden upon his own shoulders in emergency situations, be it physically or mentally. When the danger is too great, Bobby would rather risk his own life than the lives of his team. One of his real standout moments was in the season 3 episode “Fallout,” when a vehicular accident involving hazardous, combustible materials led to a magnesium fire. With a man trapped in the truck, the situation became even more dire when the team learned that there was extremely dangerous radioactive waste further back in the truck. Once the Cobalt-60 ignited, they reached gamma radiation levels in the tunnel and Bobby was in serious danger. However, he refused to leave Ernest behind, doing everything in his power to try and pry the doors off of the truck and contain the fire. Bobby was very lucky to have avoided any ill effects from his exposure. This situation also felt very reminiscent of the season 1 episode “Worst Day Ever,” when Bobby wouldn’t leave the woman trapped in the plane crash wreckage behind (despite the fact that he, too, was on the verge of drowning).

Athena Nash
Courtesy of FOX.

Athena is a force to be reckoned with, both on the job and off. Her strong wits and no-nonsense attitude rarely steer her wrong as she fearlessly looks into the face of danger time and time again. During the tsunami arc, she was presented with a new challenge … one that was not for the faint of heart. In “The Searchers,” Athena came across Captain Cooper of Station 136, who was pinned underneath a car among the wreckage in the streets. With EMTs nowhere in sight, Athena and the Captain found themselves in a precarious situation. After making up her mind, Athena broke into a house and returned with alcohol, tools, and a rag. The plan? To amputate Captain Cooper’s arm in order to save him. This certainly wasn’t the first time that Athena saw a bloody situation on the job, but she wouldn’t normally be the one tasked with sawing through flesh and bone in order to conduct a rescue. Athena’s determination to save a fellow first responder in this episode was admirable, and certainly not something your average police officer would be doing.

Evan “Buck” Buckley
Courtesy of FOX.

When there’s danger afoot in the vicinity of Evan Buckley, there’s one surefire guarantee: he’ll be the first one to dive in headfirst to save someone. Though this doesn’t always work out entirely in Buck’s favor, as he spent much of his time as a headstrong newbie in the first season being lectured by his Captain, there’s no denying his bravery as a firefighter and a human being in general. Over the years, Buck has grown tremendously as a person and within his role with the 118, and he’s had some pretty impressive and awe-inspiring saves along the way. One of the most impressive of them all took place in the season 3 episode “Sink or Swim.” At that point, Buck was still on medical leave from the ladder truck accident when he took Eddie’s son Christopher for a day out at the pier. However, off-duty or not, as soon as the raging waves of the disaster closed in, Buck automatically flipped the switch into firefighter mode. Not only did he fight tooth and nail to save Christopher from the sweeping waters, but he then dove right back in and continued to risk his life to help ferry as many trapped people as he could to the roof of the submerged firetruck. Buck’s unabashed bravery saved so many lives that day, and will forever be one of his best moments.

Henrietta “Hen” Wilson
Courtesy of FOX.

Throughout all of the madness that the 118 continuously endures, Hen is consistently the backbone of the team and a much-needed voice of reason. Her start with the 118 in the days before Bobby, Buck, and Eddie certainly wasn’t the easiest, but Hen firmly planted her feet on the ground and made it clear that the fire station is where she belongs, and nobody can take that away from her. One of Hen’s most important rescues was shown in the season 2 episode “Hen Begins,” and she wasn’t even a firefighter yet at the time. During a meeting with her life coach, the other woman began having a heart attack. Hen, thinking quickly under pressure, helped to save her life by performing CPR while the paramedics were on their way. This defining moment, which occurred at a time when Hen had no idea what direction she was going to take her life in, made her realize what she truly wanted to be doing — saving lives.

Howard “Chimney” Han
Courtesy of FOX.

Chimney is one of the unsung heroes of 9-1-1. He’s always around saving the day with the 118, but he’s never quite front-and-center in the madness. This is partly because his role as a firefighter paramedic requires him to be available to provide treatment on-site, so he can’t necessarily be both the muscle and the medic at the same time. However, it’s not just blazes of glory that save lives, it’s also the quiet moments when our characters realize something is terribly wrong. In the season 3 episode “The Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1,” Maddie and the rest of the dispatchers found themselves turned into hostages in their own workplace. With her hands essentially tied, Maddie tried to give Chimney a hint by telling him that she loved him before she was forced to hang up the phone. Chimney was quick to realize that it was weird that she said that, and after she failed to answer his texts, he tried calling 9-1-1 directly — to no avail. While Chimney was trying to convince Buck that something is wrong, Athena had already become suspicious as well for her own reasons. The three of them ended up teaming up to investigate the situation. Though Chimney may not have been the one to storm the call center in riot gear, his innate need to trust his own instincts played an important role in helping to address the dangerous situation that was quietly playing out inside of the dispatch center.

Eddie Diaz
Courtesy of FOX.

The season 3 episode “Eddie Begins” finally gave viewers a much-needed look into Eddie’s past, showing the things that he went through that shaped him into the man that he is today. The episode was twofold, however, as it also included one of the most nail-biting and stressful rescue efforts that we’ve witnessed on 9-1-1 so far. The 118 arrived at the scene to find that a young boy had fallen into a well, and upon determining that their other rescue efforts weren’t viable, Eddie volunteered to be the one to be lowered down into the narrow tunnel to rescue him. The team ran into an issue when they realized that the cord lowering Eddie down wasn’t going to reach the boy, and due to the time-sensitivity of the situation, the firefighter made the decision to cut his cord in order to reach him. This decision proved reckless but wise, as Eddie was ultimately able to free the terrified child and pass him to Chimney. However, thanks to a disastrous turn of the weather, the tunnel collapsed and began to fill with water before they could extract Eddie. Thankfully, Eddie was able to remain calm in the face of disaster and remembered that the well was connected to a series of underwater tunnels, so he found an alternate escape route as his panicked team helplessly waited on the surface.

Maddie Buckley
Courtesy of FOX.

There’s no doubt that Maddie and Evan Buckley are related. Maddie’s background as a nurse and current role as a 9-1-1 dispatcher tie in with Buck’s job as a firefighter, and they’re both strong-willed individuals with a passion for helping others. In taking the job as a dispatcher, Maddie has made a habit of trying to go above and beyond. And even if that doesn’t always work out exactly as she plans, her intentions have always been for the sake and safety of others. In the season 3 episode “The Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1,” Maddie suddenly found herself on the other side of the table as the danger she typically faced on the phone had planted itself directly in her lap. Maddie’s quick thinking to tell Chimney that she loved him was her first genius feat of the day, as it tipped him off that something was wrong, but her real moment to shine came later in the episode. As her co-worker Linda fell from her chair pretending to have an allergic reaction, Maddie took advantage of the moment and stabbed one of their captors with Linda’s EpiPen and then stole his gun. After all Maddie has been through, her bravery in this moment was astounding.

Abby Clark
Courtesy of FOX.

Though we were only able to spend the duration of the short first season with Abby, she wasted no time in proving her skills and dedication to her job as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. However, one thing that constantly lingered on Abby’s mind was the fact that she never had the opportunity to experience the full outcome of the calls that she took because people typically hang up once the first responders arrive on the scene. Despite her lack of hands-on experience, Abby was an expert when it came to calmly talking people through an assortment of situations over the phone until help arrived, which can absolutely make all the difference when every second matters. And Abby’s real time to shine was on her first date with Buck on Valentine’s Day when he began choking on a piece of bread. She found herself on the other side of things for once as the 9-1-1 operator that she dialed walked her through performing an emergency tracheotomy on Buck right in the middle of the restaurant.

May Grant
Courtesy of FOX.

May found herself in a difficult situation in the season 3 episode “Sink or Swim” when she and her mother Athena were a part of a major car accident. Athena quickly flipped over into work mode, realizing the imminent danger present on the accident scene full of injured people. In surveying the area, they found a woman that was trapped in her car and bleeding heavily from her neck. There weren’t enough helping hands to go around, so Athena instructed May to help keep pressure on the woman’s neck to buy her time until the paramedics arrived to help. As a teenager, May was initially overwhelmed at the thought of having someone’s life placed in her hands. However, the woman ended up surviving, and May learned how it feels to help save a life.

Bonus: Buck and Eddie
Courtesy of FOX.

Watching the first responders of 9-1-1 work together as a team is always an enjoyable experience, but there’s arguably no better team to watch in action than Buck and Eddie. When Eddie joined the 118 at the beginning of the second season, he and Buck didn’t exactly start off on the right foot. However, everything changed when they found themselves teamed up in a tense situation diffusing a grenade in the back of an ambulance. Their joint bravery and talent allowed them to save a man’s life that evening. After that, despite some ups and downs along the way, they were unstoppable. Some other notable feats by the two of them include their death-defying rescue of a man and a woman trapped in an office in a high rise that was halfway knocked over during an earthquake, and when they stood on top of a firetruck while it sped down a runway in order to save a man danging from an airplane.

Season 4 of 9-1-1 will premiere on FOX on January 18 at 8 p.m. EST, followed by season 2 of the spin-off series 9-1-1: Lone Star.

What were some of your favorite rescues from the past three seasons of 9-1-1? Let us know in the comments!

Review: David Levithan and Nick Bertozzi Bring a Familiar Story to a New Audience in ‘Be More Chill: The Graphic Novel’

0

In 2004, Ned Vizzini released his YA novel Be More Chill, introducing readers to Jeremy Heere. It was later adapted into a musical, and now, just over 16 years later, Be More Chill takes on the form of a graphic novel, adapted by David Levithan (Every Day) with art by Nick Bertozzi.

Be More Chill focuses on Jeremy Heere, a high schooler who spends his days pining after one of his classmates and doesn’t really have much going for him – until he learns about a pill-sized supercomputer called a squip. After taking one, Jeremy quickly becomes one of the cool kids, but soon he realizes the squip may not be as great as he once thought.

Plot-wise, the graphic novel follows the same major beats as the original novel. Naturally, scenes and other smaller plot details were removed for length, but that doesn’t compromise the story’s integrity. Throughout, Levithan and Bertozzi include references to removed sections – Levithan through character dialogue and Bertozzi through clever details and more obvious artwork (e.g. Jeremy’s Humiliation Sheet). The plot is laid out clearly so that it’s not necessary to read Vizzini’s novel before picking up the graphic novel. They skillfully present a story that readers discovering the story for the first time can understand and enjoy.

Despite removing scenes to fit the new format, Levithan and Bertozzi still provide a strong understanding of Jeremy’s personality. Where tone is established through Jeremy’s inner monologue in the novel, Bertozzi uses his art style to create the mood and tone of the graphic novel. He uses a two-color theme for the entirety of the graphic novel, creating a visual landscape that matches what readers experience through Jeremy’s thoughts in the original novel. Levithan keeps the dialogue that exemplifies the way Jeremy views himself pre- and post-squip. I, personally, also found that Jeremy was easier to relate to in the graphic novel. Due to the format, his personality was more concise, and removing his commentary helped bring him to a relatable level that’s broader than that of the original novel.

Be More Chill: The Graphic Novel is a faithful adaptation of the original novel that’s worth reading in one sitting. Readers who enjoyed the original will appreciate reliving the story in a visual way, seeing the characters come to life along with major events that happen throughout. The graphic novel also reads as less cynical. The story isn’t necessarily more lighthearted, but it’s easier to digest for readers who are searching for a slightly more optimistic version of Jeremy’s story. Levithan also removes dated language and updates a few quotations to fit better with the present day while still keeping the 2004 vibe of the story Vizzini initially created.

Be More Chill: The Graphic Novel is now available to purchase online or at your local bookstore. Find our interview with Levithan about the graphic novel here.

“Was it Weird?” Top JT Tarmel Lines From ‘Prodigal Son’

Prodigal Son was hailed as one of the most anticipated new shows on television and for a good reason. With fast-paced action, intriguing crime, and witty writing, it’s no wonder the show has quickly gathered an ever-growing fanbase. While the show centers on profiler Malcolm Bright, he’s joined by an amazing group of NYPD detectives, including Lt. Gil Arroyo, Dani Powell, and JT Tarmel.

JT and Malcolm have a strained relationship initially, which results in some hilarious banter and one-liners from JT. With season 2 just around the corner, we’re taking a look back at our favorite JT lines from season 1!

“Was it weird?”

JT and Malcolm had a strained working relationship from the very beginning of the show, and it has blessed us with some truly hilarious and sometimes awkward moments like this one. Malcolm finally decides to address the elephant in the room, the fact that his father is a notorious serial killer, and lets JT ask all the questions he wants. Of course, JT is a man of few words, and he gets right the crux of the matter, “Was it weird?” he asks. When we’re expecting some deep questions, his simple and straightforward one is both funny and perfect!

“If Bright was an actual state, he’d be Florida.”

Many of JT’s best lines poke fun at Malcolm, be it his unusual crime-solving methods or, in this case, his generally chaotic personality. When a “professional psychologist” asks about JT’s impression of Malcolm, he gives a truly hilarious answer, “If Bright was an actual state, he’d be Florida”, and we can’t say that we disagree with him!

“He’s literally covered in drugs.”

When the team arrives on a crime scene where the victim has his tongue cut out and several thousand dollars worth of drugs dumped on him, Malcolm questions where drugs are the motive, to which JT rightly replies, “he’s literally covered in drugs.” Thanks to Frank Harts’s excellent comedic timing, his delivery of this very matter of fact line gets a chuckle every single time. Sometimes detective work is straightforward, and JT isn’t afraid to point it out.

“Nobody.”

Any interaction that the NYPD squad has with Martin Whitly is sure to be interesting. With that many intelligent people in one room, or one phone call, we were bound to be treated to some comedy as well, and boy were we. When Gil demands that Martin’s call be paged through so the whole squad can hear his theory, JT momentarily gets lost in the flow of theories and crime-solving, causing him to talk. Out loud … for Martin to hear. He realizes his mistake as Martin hungrily latches on to the new voice, asking who is speaking. JT answers “nobody”, unwilling to continue interacting with the serial killer, and who can blame him!

“I thought it literally was a science.”

Malcolm’s frustrations with forming an accurate profile lead him and JT into some hilarious banter when he tells JT, “it’s not like it’s a science”, to which JT replies, “I thought it literally was a science.” As we watch through tears of laughter, Malcolm looks even more frustrated, and Gil attempts to wave JT off, but JT doesn’t relent, “What? Didn’t he tell us that on, like, the first day?”

“Could you not touch me with your shaky bandage hand?”

JT and Malcolm have a bit of bonding in episode 4 as they look for suspects at a memorial for the celebrity victim. When Malcolm tries to profile him, JT relents and explains his connection to Tatiana. In an attempt to be reassuring, Malcolm puts his bandaged hand (which also has the tremor) on his shoulder, but it only serves to creep JT out a little. “Could you not touch me with your shaky bandage hand,” he requests. We are also treated to the hilarious exchange of Malcolm saying, “nice work, partner”, but JT is not about that: “Let’s not call each other that, ok?” These two are truly peak comedy.

“I’m out.”

We find it a little amusing that JT is squeamish even with the kind of things he must see every day on the weird cases he works. While visiting Edrisa in the morgue for details on the victim, she casually points over her shoulder (nowhere near the body) when discussing the victim’s penis. JT interjects immediately to ask why she would point well … not at the body, and she informs him, “that’s where Caleb’s penis is.” That’s the final straw for JT as he says, “I’m out,” and has to look away while she continues her analysis.

“Be honest, did you kill the guy just so you could get back to work?”

JT hasn’t been shy about his skepticism of Malcolm, and when Malcolm is supposed to be on vacation, JT jokingly asks if he killed the victim just so he could get back to work. It’s a light-hearted moment that makes us laugh every time!

“The thing’s the size of a peanut, and you’re already profiling it?”

JT quickly shushes Malcolm when he manages to deduce that Tally and JT are expecting thanks to JT, knowing a little too much about sip-n-see parties. It’s still very early, and JT is more than a little worried that “the thing’s the size of a peanut, and you’re already profiling it”. Malcolm promises to keep his secret and even gives JT some sage advice, “Don’t become a serial killer,” when JT worries that his baby might turn out like Malcolm. It’s all kinds of funny and endearing and brings them a little closer.

“Bright’s our guy. We can’t just sit around.”

Ok, so this one isn’t funny, but it showcases how quickly JT has accepted Malcolm. In the course of just 11 episodes, Malcolm went from the weirdo profiler to “one of us” and “our guy”. He’s accepted Malcolm as part of the team, and even though he gives him a hard time, JT is prepared to fight in order to save Malcolm from the Junkyard Killer.

JT Tarmel has become one of our favorite characters on Prodigal Son thanks to his sharp humor and constant back and forth with Gil and Malcolm, as well as his excellent detective skills! We can’t wait to see him back in action in season 2 and hopefully gather more clues to the all-important question, what does JT stand for?

Prodigal Son returns to FOX on January 12 at 9/8 C.

‘Mayans M.C.’ Among Shows on Pause Due to COVID

0

Fans of the series Mayans M.C. have been anxiously waiting for more news, photos, or even a glimpse at season 3. Well, we will have to wait a bit longer. The cast and crew’s return date to re-start filming has been delayed to mid-January due to rising COVID cases. They were initially going to be back on January 11, 2021, and the new date is currently January 18. But if cases continue to climb, that date could very well change again until it is safe for everyone to return.

On January 3, 2021, in a joint statement, SAG-AFTRA, the Joint Policy Committee (JOC), and the Producers Guild of America (PGA) agreed to pause on productions taking place in Southern California.

In a statement, the SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director David White said:

“Even putting aside the risk of acquiring COVID on set — a risk that we have done a great deal to mitigate through our safety protocols — on-set production always poses some risk of injury, whether because of a stunt gone wrong, an equipment failure or a garden-variety fall. Right now, with few if any hospital beds available, it is hard to understand how a worker injured on set is supposed to seek treatment. I would like to thank the JPC and the PGA for their efforts to reinforce safety measures for all, and we acknowledge and appreciate the major studios and other producers who have proactively stepped up and postponed their production during this emergency. It is too hard to say right now when the situation may improve, but we are monitoring closely and will make sure that our members have the information they need to make the best decisions they can to protect themselves and our community.”

Mayans M.C. takes place around four years after the Sons of Anarchy finale and is set in the fictional town of Santo Padre on the California/Mexico border. The crime drama series on FX was created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James – who will be taking the reins for season 3.

The series follows the Mayans motorcycle club that was introduced in Sons of Anarchy. The series stars JD Pardo, Clayton Cardenas, Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Richard Cabral, Danny Pino, Emilio Rivera, Frankie Loyal, Joseph Lucero, Vincent Rocco Vargas, Maurice Compte, Gino Vento, Tony Plana, Michael Ornstein, Ada Maris, and more.

Stay tuned for more information about the Mayans M.C. as it becomes available.
