Chadwick Boseman Posthumously Wins Golden Globe for ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’

The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards took place this evening, an event recognizing and celebrating the films and television shows that ushered us through 2020.

At the end of August 2020, we lost Chadwick Boseman — an incredible actor, social justice advocate, and all-around human. But even after he passed, Boseman left us one last role — Levee in the Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which released in December 2020.

Boseman continues to earn the recognition he deserves, especially for his role in Ma Rainey’s, getting nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Tonight, Boseman posthumously won the category, and we can’t think of a better way to remember the way he lit up the screen. He was nominated alongside Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Tahar Rahim.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set in 1927 Chicago during a recording session with “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey and her band. It follows Ma and the band as she pushes against her ambitious horn player and white management determined to control her.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is now streaming on Netflix.

0

In just two days, Adam Silvera will release the second book in his Infinity Cycle series, Infinity Reaper. Today, Silvera revealed that the Infinity Cycle will continue in a third and final installment!

There are currently no further details at this time regarding the book (Silvera is keeping the title close to his chest). However, the next book will continue follow our two heroes, Emil and Brighton Rey. Infinity Cycle #3 will release in 2022.

The Infinity Cycle kicked off with Infinity Son, which introduces Emil and Brighton, brothers who have admired a group of vigilante celestials (people born with magic) called the Spell Walkers, who are embroiled in an intense war with Blood Casters, a malicious group of specters (those who steal magic from creatures). Brighton always dreamed of having powers to join the fight, whereas Emil prefers to keep to himself. But when powers manifest in Emil during a brawl, the brothers are thrust into the war. Soon, their brotherhood is tested as they work with the Spell Walkers to defeat the Blood Casters.

Infinity Reaper picks up where Infinity Son left off, and this time, the stakes are higher. Emil faces a race against against time as he fights to save Brighton’s life and find a way to rid himself of powers he never wanted. Meanwhile, the Spell Walkers are crumbling and their on-going battle for peace only becomes more complicated.

Infinity Reaper is set to release on March 2. Order your copy here, and keep an eye out for our review of the book! Stay tuned for more details on book 3 as they become available.

Mike Shinoda Produces 16th Track “Everybody Here” by Paigambar Live on Twitch!

0

Following the excitement of the release of his new single “Happy Endings” (feat. iann dior and UPSAHL), Mike Shinoda has started to return to his normal Twitch schedule. He began production on another track titled “Everybody Here” by rapper Paigambar on Friday, February 28. Paigambar sent over vocal tracks and a click track, but no instrumentals or chords, which isn’t typical for these production sessions. However, Paigambar did post a few videos on Instagram featuring his raps over a beat, which helped Shinoda figure out which direction to take “Everybody Here” — specifically in how he felt that the track needed to be a little dark and gritty.

Prior to the stream, Shinoda had pulled a full four pages of samples to use to produce Paigambar’s track, but accidentally deleted them when he copied Paigambar’s vocals into Ableton. Sorting through his collection of samples for a second time, the primary sample Shinoda used was a high pitched beat that gave the track some structure, which he then built the rest of the track around. Shinoda also added a choir sample, “dark” piano, at least two drum beats, drum snare, vinyl loops, and more.

Using the samples he pulled, Shinoda was able to get pretty far on the first section of the track fairly quickly. He then moved onto the hook, editing the breakbeat and adding some saturation to it. Struggling a little to find the exact sound he knew would bring the track to the next level, Shinoda spent some time fine-tuning the timing for the vocals with the instrumentals and going through different effects and samples, along with creating his own, in order to get the song just right.

“Remember we talked about this before … you gotta come in early if you’re gonna have a new pattern or a new tempo, you gotta come in beforehand.  Either mute so [listeners are] ready for a big change or come in with a new tempo pattern.”

Paigambar is a musician and rapper from India, who also goes by the name Post Mortem Report. He initially caught Shinoda’s attention via Instagram where he posted three different videos, each featuring a different rap and beat. Paigambar has released his own original music, such as the songs “Deep Inside” and “No Beauty Sleep (Ft. Diane)”, which can be found on Soundcloud under Post Mortem Report. His more recent work, such as the singles “Ghost Pepper”, “Inferno”, and “Avalanche” can be found on Spotify and his Youtube channel, along with their official music videos.

If you weren’t able to see Paigambar’s “Everybody Here” be produced live by Mike Shinoda, you can still watch the Twitch replay below! Make sure to check out Paigambar’s music, as well as Shinoda’s previous production sessions. Stay tuned to Shinoda’s Twitch channel weekdays around 10 a.m. PT for more live production sessions starting with “Strong” by Joe Turone on Tuesday, March 2, followed by “Lilith” by Plexxaglass on Thursday, March 4!
