‘Wynonna Earp’ is Back From the Dead: Tubi to Host a 90-Minute Special

These days, if you want more than two seasons of a show, you have to fight. Hard. Wynonna Earp fans, known as Earpers, managed to do that in 2020, using Twitter and Times Square billboards to convince SyFy to make and release the fourth season. Before the last six episodes were set to air, they announced there would not be a season five, and despite even more fan campaigns to #BringWynonnaHome over the last three years, there wasn’t much hope.

That is, until today.

On Thursday, February 8, Tubi announced via Vanity Fair that Wynonna Earp will return later in 2024 for a 90-minute special tentatively titled Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. This special is being written by creator Emily Andras and will star the core four of the cast: Melanie ScrofanoĀ (Wynonna Earp),Ā Tim RozonĀ (Doc Holliday),Ā Dom Provost-ChalkleyĀ (Waverly Earp), andĀ Katherine BarrellĀ (Nicole Haught). The special will be directed by Paolo Barzman who directed almost half of the original show’s episodes including the pilot and finale. And, Andras teases we will see other familiar faces throughout Purgatory.

The aforementioned cast and creator spoke with Mo Ryan, a contributing editor for Vanity Fair, in a video interview all about this exciting update.

Time has passed in the Earp world – Waverly and Nicole have been living in Purgatory, and Doc and Wynonna have been on an adventure. As to what brings everyone together, Andras teases, “Maybe facing a challenge they’ve never faced before, something pretty intense.”

The show will still be everything Earpers love, Andras continues, “[it’ll be] your favorite character moments, but also a little bit about growing up and being who you are now, and owning your choices.” The hope is that if they do it right, it will be an opportunity for the existing fandom to show up, and for Tubi to bring in some new fans as well.

Rozon says he’s not nervous about stepping into Doc Holliday’s shoes again, but rather that he’s holding his breath until it actually happens, for the fans. “I don’t care about me, in this, at all. It’s for the fans. It’s so important that they get this message Thursday that Emily Andres has written them Wynonna Earp and Waverly, Wynonna, and Doc, and Haught everyone’ coming back – I just know what it’s going to mean to them because I’ve been with them the whole time, [Earpers] never stopped.”

This special is a love letter to the Earpers, who have fought so hard at every step to make the show happen, and Andres knows this, too. “It’s funny to create something that could then goes on to be owned by a whole other group of people. I agree with [Tim] I feel nervous ’cause I don’t want to let anyone down, but I just think I think they’re going to be surprised and delighted they’re going to be so happy to see your faces.”

Earpers rejoiced on Twitter today, with gifs and quotes galore. The participation by the cast and crew in the fandom has been so special, and will continue to be leading up to ‘Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.”
