The Apothecary Diaries is taking a one-week break before the premiere of season 1’s second cour.

The 12th episode of season 1 saw Jinshi let Maomao go from her post in the Inner Palace, forcing her back to Verdigris House in the Pleasure District. Thanks to a decent severance, Maomao saves herself from being sold off to pay back her debt for Lihaku’s visit but still works part-time as a courtesan who thankfully doesn’t see personal customers. One night, the three princesses of Verdigris are called to the palace of a noble with Maoamo in tow where she finds none other than Jinshi sulking in a corner. A few days later, Jinshi returns to buy Maomao out, with a special gift for her included.

The second half of season 1 will provide Maomao with even more complex mysteries as other Imperial secrets begin to unravel. New characters are set to be introduced including the scheming monocle-wearing official Lakan and Suirei, another court lady Maomao meets at her new post.

For those wanting more even after the 24 episodes of season 1, the manga is available in print up to volume 10 and beyond on Manga UP!, which is available as an app. The light novels the manga and series are based on is available digitally from Amazon up to volume 9 and J-Novel Club through volume 10. Both are still being serialized. The print editions will be available from Square Enix beginning May 2024.

The Apothecary Diaries returns on January 6. Episodes will be available to stream on Crunchyroll with a new opening theme, “Ambivalent” by Uru, and ending theme, “Ai wa Kusuri” by wacci.
