Naughty Dog has confirmed its massive online multiplayer The Last of Us game is canceled.
The game would have stemmed from The Last of Us: Factions introduced back in 2013 with the original base game’s release. Factions II was originally set to release alongside The Last of Us Part II before becoming its own standalone project, and Factions was notably absent on 2022’s The Last of Us remaster for PS5, The Last of Us Part I.
Studio head Neil Druckmann had teased status updates for the game during the press tour for the HBO adaptation earlier this year, but a blog posted by Naughty Dog confirmed today that the highly-anticipated game is dead in the water.
The post states that maintaining the online game would hinder the studio’s ability to continue creating single-player stories. As of right now, the next IP coming from the studio is unknown.
Naughty Dog’s next release is The Last of Us Part II Remastered on January 19, 2024. The remaster will feature a new survival mode, No Return, and a few deleted scenes that did not make it into the original version.
