‘Young Royals’ Gets Third & Final Season on Netflix

Will there be a happy ending for Wilhelm and Simon? Young Royals fans have one more season to find out. Netflix has confirmed that the breakout LGBTQ+ drama will get a third season, but it will be the last one.

Netflix delivered the news with a tweet and adorable shot of the two main stars.

The main cast are all confirmed to return for the final season, including Edvin Ryding as Prince Wilhelm, Omar Rudberg as Simon, Malte Gårdinger as August, Frida Argento as Sara, and Nikita Uggla as Felice.

Lisa Ambjörn, the show’s co-creator and head writer, is also on board for season 3, as she confirmed in a passionate Instagram post:

“If someone had told me in 2019 when this little universe was just a tiny idea that had been planted in my imagination and started to grow and consume my every waking thought, that it would turn out to be a global success saga spanning over three seasons — shaping new talent both in front of and behind the camera and creating a fandom that would take on a life of its own and actually change people’s lives for the better — I would have said TOLD YOU SO.

The news of the show’s renewal came just ahead of Rudberg and Ryding’s first US talk show appearance, set for Thursday, December 15 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Fans can’t wait to see the pair talk about playing Willie and Simon, and hopefully get their reaction to the season 3 announcement!

Young Royals is a Swedish teen drama series from Netflix Nordic that centers around the romance between the fictional Prince Wilhelm of Sweden and his boarding school classmate Simon Eriksson. Teenage love is hard enough, but throw in being royalty and things start to get complicated.

The Netflix Original series premiered in 2021 and was immediately renewed for a second season after gaining a huge following across the world on social media.

Despite one of the characters being a royal, the show is surprisingly relatable for viewers. It has been held up as a brilliantly positive example of LGBTQ+ media done right, with great relationship representation and the subversion of many of the usual unhealthy tropes. Season 2 took an already emotional ending to the first season and delivered a stunning, heart-wrenching slow-burn for everyone’s favorite prince and pauper couple. Hopefully season 3 will continue the legacy of great writing and wonderful acting we’ve seen so far.

Wilhelm and Simon’s love story has been a rollercoaster, and fans are eager to see how the team wrap everything up in the final season. After everything they’ve been through, here’s hoping that these young lovers get the ending they deserve! We don’t have a filming date or more news about season 3 just yet, but the first two seasons are available to stream now on Netflix.
