‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Recap: “Part V”

Share:

Following Obi-Wan, Leia, and Tala’s narrow escape from Fortess Inquisitorious, they reconvene on Jabiim. However, Darth Vader and his forces aren’t far behind, because Reva outfitted Leia’s droid Lola with a tracker. The stakes continue to rise in “Part V” of Obi-Wan Kenobi as Darth Vader grows closer to his prize, his old Jedi Master.

The approach

A flashback to a time long ago on Coruscant shows a much young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker duelling for practice. The memory fades, and we see Darth Vader. Reva approaches Vader on his ship, and she tells him that Obi-Wan is currently arriving on Jabiim. In return, he gives her the title of Grand Inquisitor. As they approach the planet, Vader gives orders to lock down the facility using Leia’s compromised droid Lola.

Trapped on Jabiim

A crowd eagerly watches as Obi-Wan, Leia, Tala, Roken, and Sully return to Jabiim, relieved that the young girl has been rescued. Haja has saught refuge there as well, though he’s still a scheming entrepreneur at heart. Obi-Wan tells Roken that he needs to get Leia back to Alderaan, but they’ll have to wait, because the group of people milling about have been waiting for months, and now they only have a few hours left to get them out.

Obi-Wan stops to read the markings on the walls, and he finds a pile of lightsabers and Jedi robes. Controlled by Vader’s troops, Lola slips into a vent and locks the large doors above so the ship can’t take off. Obi-Wan tells the others that Vader will attack, because he doesn’t have the patience for a siege. We see another flashback to a younger Obi-Wan and Anakin during their friendly duel, and the Jedi Master chastises his Padawan for being too aggressive in battle.

In an attempt to save the people there, Obi-Wan instructs everyone that they’ll need to hold back Vader’s attacks long enough for them to override the doors and make their escape. They lock down the other entrances just as Reva and Vader’s troops land.

In at attempt to figure out why they can’t get the top doors open, Leia offers to crawl inside the vent to investigate. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan excuses himself to listen to a message on his holoprojector from Bail, who is worried by the Jedi’s silence. He tells Obi-Wan that if he doesn’t hear from him soon, he will be heading to Tatooine to help Owen with Luke.

Reva’s secret

Obi-Wan requests to talk with Reva, and they stand on either side of the closed door. She assures him that if he’s stalling for time, it won’t work, because Lord Vader will have him at any cost. Obi-Wan corrects her, “You mean Anakin,” and he questions how she would even know Vader’s true identity. He realizes that Reva was a youngling during Order 66; she saw Anakin, but she survived. She tells Obi-Wan that they thought Anakin was there to help them. She played dead and hid with the bodies to survive. Obi-Wan figures out the truth: she’s not serving Anakin, she’s hunting him. He implores her to let him help her, but when Obi-Wan tells her they both want the same thing, Reva asks him point blank if he wants Anakin dead … and he can’t answer. She demands to know where he was while Anakin was killing her friends during Order 66, because he was his Padawan, after all. Why didn’t Obi-Wan stop him?

Reva cuts though the door with her lightsaber and forces it open, and the troops surge forward as blasters begin to fire from both sides. They retreat back toward where the ship awaits, and Tala is shot in the process. Obi-Wan cries out as the doors close in front of him, and Tala sacrifices herself, activating an explosive device in her hands to take out the remaining stormtroopers.

Obi-Wan’s surrender

Vader instructs Reva and the troops to stand down, because Obi-Wan is already theirs. We see a continuation of Obi-Wan and Anakin’s sparring — the Padawan backs his Master into a corner and tells him that it’s over, to admit that he’s been beaten. Defeated, a present day Obi-Wan tells Roken that it’s over. He gives Haja his weapons and tells him to look out for Leia before walking out the doors and raising his arms in surrender.

Reva is smug as the stormtroopers bring Obi-Wan outside to her, and she tells him that Vader is on his way. He’s going to die soon. Calmly, Obi-Wan tells her that he’s bring Vader to her. There are families and children inside … is she going to let Vader do this again? They could end this together. And Vader won’t even see it coming, because all he’ll see is Obi-Wan.

In the past, Anakin manages to disarm Obi-Wan, sending his lightsaber flying from his hands. Anakin tells him that it’s over now that he doesn’t have a weapon, and Obi-Wan states that his Padawan’s need for victory blinds him.

Tricking Darth Vader

Leia manages to find Lola, and once she removes the restraining bolt from the droid, she’s able to get the doors open. Obi-Wan returns and he hugs Leia as the people begin to board the transport. However, just as it takes off, Vader enters the room and uses the Force to pull the ship back down onto the ground … and then the real ship takes off beside it. It was a trick. In the past, Obi-Wan and Anakin continue to spar, and Obi-Wan uses the force to take Anakin’s lightsaber from him. Anakin’s need to prove himself is his undoing, his Master tells him.

Reva creeps up behind Vader and ignites her lightsaber, but he easily stops her with the Force. They begin to duel. Reva remembers the night of Order 66 as Vader steps forward and plunges a lightsaber through her chest. The original Grand Inquisitor walks in, alive and well. After they leave Reva to die, she crawls across the ground and finds Obi-Wan’s holoprojector (which Haja dropped in the scramble to escape) and sees Bail’s message.

Roken finds Obi-Wan on the ship and tells him that their hyper drive is down … and Vader’s forces are behind them. Obi-Wan has a haunted look on his face as an uneasy feeling creeps through him … something is wrong. Meanwhile, a young Luke Skywalker sleeps soundly on Tatooine.
