Barbara Gordon’s best friend has arrived.

Ivory Aquino (Tales of the City and When We Rise) has snagged the role of Alysia Yeoh, the titular superhero a.k.a. Barbra Gordon’s roommate/best friend, in HBO Max’s upcoming film Batgirl.

As both Aquino and Yeoh are transgender, this will be the first live-action DC film to feature an openly trans character. Yeoh has been in the comics for over a decade now, and this film appearance is another step forward in DC’s continued efforts toward broader LGBTQ+ representation.

Aquino joins J.K. Simmons (as Barbara’s father, Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon), Brendan Fraser (as the unspecified main villain), Michael Keaton (reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman), and Jacob Scipio (in an unknown role) as supporting cast to Leslie Grace‘s title character.

Batgirl does not yet have a set release date, but you can continue to check back here for all the Batgirl news as it emerges.
