Welcome to the premiere of Astrid & Lilly Save the World! Best friends Astrid (Jana Morrison) and Lilly (Samantha Aucoin) are just trying to navigate high school (Go Ferrets!), crushes, and home life. But all of that is about to change.

On a typical recon night, the girls are in Lilly’s car with their night vision goggles to watch and see what the cool kids do at night. They want not to be the outsiders anymore. “Does this make us creepy?” “No, this makes us Olivia Benson!”

House Party

They find out about a house party, and Astrid convinces Lilly that they should go. They walk in and are handed a drink by Valerie (Christina Orjalo), a classmate, and are in awe that they could get in since they were not invited. Tate (Kolton Stewart), the guy whose house it is, sees them and starts calling them names like fat Astrid, monsters, and pudge patrol because they are both plus-size. Lilly is close to tears, but Astrid holds it together and takes her friend, and they leave. Astrid comforts her crying friend when they are in the car, reassuring her and calling them the monsters and “F those haters!”

What Portal?

To get rid of their feelings, they put a hacky sack that belonged to one of the “cool” kids and other things that they think will help it burn in a metal-looking bowl and set it on fire. They say things like wanting “Tate to disappear” and “F those haters” while they dance it out. They are even saying some words backward and howling at the moon to get how those people made them feel out. You know, totally normal teenager stuff. Suddenly, the sky gets a purple glow, and the moon turns purple as well. They think it is a cool coincidence and then go because of their curfew.

Monster Hunters!

The next day at school, they hear that Tate is missing. Astrid and Lilly question if it was because of what they did but quickly shake the thought off. During the day, when the lightning flashes, Lilly’s leg keeps paining, and Astrid smells a horseradish scent when no one else does. Yup, still completely normal things.

Meanwhile, Tate and another girl are in an abandoned warehouse and uncontrollably crying with their tears going into a martini glass. Cut to Valerie, who is outside alone and hears a voice saying horrible things to her that makes her cry and takes her to the others.

When the girls go to the woods to investigate where Tate’s ID was found, they find some goo and what looks like a broken fingernail claw. Lilly’s leg starts to bother her again, and Astrid says she can smell burnt pickles when they hear rustling leaves. “I’m going to die at the hands of a hottie with a body;” that is Astrid’s first reaction to seeing Brutus (Olivier Renaud). He is there to be their “Giles” as they hunt down the monster body parts needed to close the portal that they opened. Oh, and the reason for the hurt leg and smelling of horseradish … is their powers being activated to help them in their monster hunter journey.

First Monster Kill

Alex Stead/Blue Ice Pictures/SYFY

Astrid and Lilly look for the first monster, whose name is Tear Jerker, because it will say the deepest darkest thing you do not want to hear about, feeding off your tears. After having an encounter where Lilly was almost taken, the girls put on comfy monster-hunting clothes and put what can kill the monster in a water gun. They even call themselves pudge patrol to take what those teenage monsters called them and use it to motivate themselves.

After getting over the shock that the monster is real, they plan and manage to kill their first monster and cut off its tongue, which is the body part needed from that monster to help close the portal. Plus, Astrid and Lilly saved both Valerie and Tate, being the badasses they are.

Angel of Mercy

Christine (Geri Hall) is the mother of one of their classmates Candace (Julia Doyle), and she is the leader of a youth church group. At the church, she prays for an angel of mercy to help get rid of a teacher encouraging her daughter to get into acting. Something appears saying that it will help her if she helps it. Somehow, I doubt this is an angel of mercy. Could this be the big bad of the season?
