Season 2 of Motherland: Fort Salem has kept us on the edge of our seats from the very first episode and the season finale went above and beyond! There were tears (lots of tears), laughs, and jaw dropping twists that perfectly sets up the show to return for an epic season 3.

Fort Salem is Saved

We knew our favorite Unit was a force to be reckoned with and the Camarilla learned that the hard way in this episode. With the Witch Plague running rampant over the base, the Sekhmet Coven enact their own plans. Tally, smart cookie that she is, can see the tones used by the Camarilla to limit witch Work. She sings a tone of her own that destroys their devices, evening the playing field and allowing witches on base to take out their equipment.

In another area of base, Petra frees Nicte and they fight the Camarilla side by side. Interestingly, the Camarilla agent who calls himself “the Doctor” taunts Petra about Abigail and says, “The union of Earth and sky must be prevented at all costs.” He’s talking about Abigail and Adil, which is some intriguing food for thought while we await the third and final season.

Raelle, Tally, and Abigail manage to find the source and neutralize it. The catch? The Camarilla have made Penelope Silver the host organism. Raelle uses the Witchbomb to keep the plague under control while Abigail uses her Weatherwork to save the base. Sadly, this means killing Penelope. Of course this is devastating for everyone, especially Tally. It was clear that Penelope was unaware what was happening to her making these terrible events even worse.

Alder… Dies?

Freeform/Jeff Petry

With the attack on base, Alder and the Biddies return to help fight the Camarilla. She asks Petra for orders and carries them out dutifully as any soldier should. Unfortunately, the plague kills the Biddies leaving Alder half dead (and oddly looking like a tree?). Anacostia is there to witness it all and is brought to tears at the notion of Alder’s death. Alder requests Raelle and her Unit come to “see her off” aka they say an emotional goodbye before giving her body to the Mycelium.

We think this is the end of our beloved (though sometimes problematic) ex-General, but that’d be too easy. The final moments of the episode show Alder deep within the Mycelium. Her body is slowly being repaired. Now, we know the Mycelium was created by Alder’s deep grief over the loss of her first coven. This final shot leaves us to wonder if we’ll be seeing her in season 3, new and improved with the same connection to the Mycelium as Raelle.

Everything Goes Very Wrong for The Unit

Freeform/Jeff Petry

Their victory over the Camarilla’s attack is short lived, sad as it is with so much loss of life. Silver decides that the Unit outright murdered Penelope and plans to have them charged for their “crimes.” Petra meets with the President in an attempt to reason with her (and save Abigail, Raelle, and Tally) but even she has started to turn against the Army. In a final desperate attempt to save them Petra, Anacostia, Scylla, and Adil use Weatherwork to break the girls out while they are in transit from base.

The jailbreak is successful and also includes Nicte. She’ll now be on the run with them. It seems she’s changed her ways, focusing her Work on the Camarilla rather than the Army. It sets up an interesting plot for season 3. Just how long will our favorite witches be on the run? How long can they hide and will they be able to clear their names? While we don’t have answers to any of these questions yet, the moment did treat fans to the Raelle and Scylla forgiveness (with a little make out session) that they’ve been craving as well as bringing Adil and Abigail together again.

It was Vice President Silver All Along!

Freeform/Jeff Petry

Okay, it was the Camarilla all along, but how could we pass up the chance to adapt that catchy tune given the huge revelation in the finale! It’s been clear from the beginning that Silver does not like witches, and finds their very existence problematic (both a deep rooted prejudice an also likely because they threaten his power). However, what we never expected was Silver to side with the Camarilla, sacrificing his own daughter in the process. That’s right, Silver met with Camarilla leadership and allowed them to kill Penelope. We just thought we couldn’t hate anyone as much as we hated the Camarilla. There’s no doubt he will play a huge role next season, and we can only hope that the truth of his crimes will be exposed.

Motherland: Fort Salem has been renewed for a third and final season on Freeform.
