Recap: Time for Awkward Moments in ‘Resident Alien’ Season 1, Episode 4 “Birds of a Feather”

SYFY

We are almost at the halfway mark of the first season of Resident Alien, as fans hope for a second season – and more.

Last week’s aptly titled episode, “Secrets,” gave viewers some subtle and not so subtle hints at some of the hidden mysteries found in Patience, Colorado. We also saw a flashback to the night that Sam (Jan Bos) and Asta (Sara Tomko) brought her baby to the adoptive family at a familiar house. Not to mention Harry Vanderspeigle (Alan Tudyk) now has a dead body in a deep freezer in his basement that happens to look identical to himself. Oh, and remember the man and woman who saw the dead body floating in the air? Well, they made another appearance last week as well. What are they up to?

There will be spoilers beyond this point.

It appears the longer Harry is on Earth and in human form, the more he gets human qualities, as shown during the opening song number set to the Cheers theme song. He has been feeling emotions, sleeping, and dreams now, too. Not to mention that later in the episode, after attempting and experiencing his first kiss with D’arcy (Alice Wetterlund), his body also reacts to the kiss making Harry think that his penis is in rigor mortis and dying, but it was his first erection.

There are quite a few awkward moments like this during “Birds of a Feather” between co-workers, friends, and family. And shockingly, they all do not involve Harry.

To help Max (Judah Prehn) get over the obsession that Harry is an alien, the Mayor invites Harry over for supper. Not wanting to go, he goes over to the table where Asta and D’arcy are sitting and wants her to go with him. Asta already has plans and suggests that he take D’arcy. When they show up, Kate (Meredith Garretson) and Ben (Levi Fiehler) are surprised that he brought someone. Oddly throughout the dinner, Max is nice to Harry, even hugging him. But the awkwardness of the night comes from Kate finding out about D’arcy and her husband’s past. As D’arcy indulges in the wine, more comes out. The fact that she and Ben were friends, he was her first kiss in grade five, and then the pair dated as teenagers.

If you wonder why Max is being so friendly to Harry and not wanting him to leave, it is because he has a plan along with his new friend Sahar (Gracelyn Awad Rinke). While everyone is inside, Sahar searched Harry’s truck and steals his keys to get a copy made. Harry thinks that Max likes him, but little does he know it was all a ploy so they can get the keys to break into his cabin.

A man and woman are getting gas for their RV office when the guy mentions how killing that guy from the bar was not part of their orders. The woman notes that they are to deliver the alien to the General, and she will eliminate anyone who gets in her way. The best part of this is when they are talking and saying that the alien would not just appear, you can see Harry at the same gas station as them.

The next day Asta, Harry, and her dad Dan (Gary Farmer) go for a family member’s birthday. Harry is there to give the injection to her grandmother. When they first arrive, Harry sees the large family and how warm and welcoming they are towards him and honestly seems happy. After giving her grandmother the shots, Asta is holding a baby and gets the question of when she will have one. Harry says that she already has one, and her name is Jay (Kaylayla Raine). Everyone is taken aback as Asta runs out of the room. Asta later has a touching heart to heart with Dan, “Even when we are not okay, we will always be okay.”

Outside, Harry sees the guys playing basketball. The ball rolls over to him, and he takes a three-point shot and makes the basket, impressing them. Harry accepts their invitation and plays basketball with them. Well… tries to. He has no idea of the rules or what he is doing. It is hilarious to watch, though. As he gets more physically active and out of breath, he thinks he is dying and goes to lay down in the grass, staring up at the night sky. A few minutes later, Asta lays down beside him. He apologizes to her, and they have a moment where Harry lets his guard down, saying that he is tired and misses his home. (Go on a tangent with me for a moment. If he were on a mission, the other aliens would obviously know about it, right?) Do they think he is dead, or are they looking for him? He then confides in Asta, saying that he had a wife who died.

Sahar and Max ride their bikes out to Harry and begin their search of his cabin. They go to the basement and find the map Harry uses to search for the parts to his ship and device. Max calls Sahar over to the floating Apple, and she touches it, which causes an energy force to fling them across the room.

When Harry gets home and finds their bikes, he goes to the basement to search for them. he finds them unconscious and checks to see if they are alive. With a disappointed look on his face, he says they are, in fact, alive. He puts them each in a large duffle bag only to discover a woman in his kitchen when bringing them upstairs. When he asks how she got in, she replies, “well, I am still your wife,” causing Harry to drop the duffle bags to the floor that the kids are in.

See you for next week’s episode of Resident Alien on SYFY at 10 p.m. ET.
