The series premiered on Nickelodeon in May 1999 and followed the residents in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. The main character is SpongeBob, who also works at a restaurant called the Krusty Krab with the ill-tempered Squidward. His friends include Patrick, the starfish, Sandy, a squirrel who lives in an oxygenated glass enclosure, and of course, Gary, the snail who meows like a cat.

The films official synopsis is,

“This Memorial Day weekend, SpongeBob SquarePants, his best friend Patrick Star and the rest of the gang from Bikini Bottom hit the big screen in the first-ever all CGI SpongeBob motion picture event. After SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home. As they navigate the delights and dangers of this dangerous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove there’s nothing stronger than the power of friendship.”

In the trailer, we see a child version of SpongeBob meeting Gary for the first time and becoming friends. Then fast forward to him coming home and finding out that Gary has been snail-napped. So, what are they to do but go on a journey to the lost city of Atlantic City. While there, SpongeBob and Patrick get entranced by everything. They do meet an interesting character, though, Keanu Reeves as Sage. “Call me Sage,” the otherworldly Keanu shrub says. “I am made out of sage, and I am a sage, so it works out pretty well.” But, will they find Gary and bring him home?

The movie features the voice talents of Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Bill Fagerbakke, Lori Alan, Rodger Bumpass, Mary Jo Catlett, Jill Talley, Carolyn Lawrence, Awkwafina, and more.

The movie will be in theaters in May 2020, and you can watch the trailer below!
