In the third film following the original 1995 classic (or fourth, depending on your Zathura: A Space Adventure stance), Jumanji: The Next Level brings back Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon (Jack Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan).
As previously reported in July, the new Jumanji gang seems to have drifted apart, and it’s causing some serious trouble. While Martha (Morgan Turner) once again queues up with the Ruby Roundhouse avatar, the rest of the crew are struggling with new strengths and weaknesses as they play with new avatars — including the return of Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough (Nick Jonas).
Expectations for the 2017 Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle were low at best, with many seeing Sony’s remake as an obvious cash-grab. To be fair, it was a sequel planned more than two decades after the first, and with none of the original cast signed on (including the possessed board game that started it all). Yet, the fantasy/action-adventure surprised audiences with body-swapping situational humor delivered by an A+ cast. While unfavorable reviews that seemed to miss the point poured in, even more outlets and audiences cried success over the gem they thought would be a disaster.
It’s too soon to tell if the upcoming sequel will be just as fun. For now, check out the Jumanji: The Next Level trailer below, and let us know what you think:
