If there’s anyone who can teach a masterclass in manifesting, it’s Tom Holland, having gone from the infamous childhood snapshot of a web-slinging figurine flung onto his face like an actual fist-sized spider to decking it out in spandex across the MCU. So, how is he playing more into the mystical as if? Through tackling another less-than-heroic punk, that is — cancer.

Kirby returns from rehab, Fallon’s company is once again in jeopardy, and there’s a new Carrington in town. Plus, what’s up with Eva and Liam? Read on to find out what happens in this week’s episode of Dynasty, “Stars Make You Smile.”
Kirby’s home
Kirby is back from rehab and ready to make amends with all the people she hurt, but she doesn’t know where to start. Adam is on his way to work when the two cross paths rather awkwardly. He wishes her well anyhow and rushes out the door. Kirby says she should have expected that because he didn’t answer any of her emails. Fallon’s next on the list. She is hurrying to get to her emergency board meeting, so she quickly forgives Kirby in passing.
Collin’s crusade
The emergency board meeting in question is to find out who is buying up large quantities of Fallon Unlimited stock via shell companies. They don’t have to wait long for an answer though, Colin makes it known that he’s the one who did it.
This is Colin’s way of retaliation after Fallon bought up the land he was going to. Once he gains another five percent, he will have the controlling interest. Fallon tells him gloating gets him nowhere, but he’s already got a deal with a hedge fund, the announcement will be made the following day.
She has her own plan in place to make sure he has no chance at doing so, however. If she sells off the radio division and uses those funds as a “Ms. Pac Man defense” as she calls it, he won’t be able to save his company and buy the five percent.
While she can’t get Quinn’s vote on the board, she manages to steal the three who were gunning for Colin. She remains head of the board.
Blake Carrington you … may be the father?
Wilford Harewood/The CW
Flipping through Anders’ things to get a sense of direction, he comes across his calendar from 1996. He then presents it to Alexis and asks if it’s possible he’s the father. 40 weeks before she gave birth, she and Blake were in Miami celebrating the New Year. She reminds him it’s not certain they slept together, but Blake is almost positive. Why? She also sneezes in the sunlight, just like him.
Blake requests help from Adam to distract Amanda while Blake gets ahold of her glass so he can run DNA testing on it. Alexis interjects and crushes the glass, rendering it useless. However, Adam, like a true Carrington, helps his dad steal her brush and get a few strands of hair to test and she is, in fact, Blake’s biological daughter.
A toast, to successful Black businessmen
Wilford Harewood/The CW
Culhane has managed to get one of the hottest podcasts, On with Andre, to do an interview from the club. If it goes well, he may be interested in doing live shows. Andre only wants to highlight Black careers, so Culhane asks a favor from one of Atlanta’s A-listers, Jeff Colby. The interview seems to be going well until Andre asks about Jeff’s space dealings. Jeff gets defensive. He doesn’t want to talk about it until things have happened. They get into an argument, which leads to Jeff leaving and Culhane scrambling to fix it.
Culhane gets a message about having Andre do another podcast. He thinks it’s a mistake at first until Jeff confesses the truth. He didn’t get the approval he needed in Washington. He’s invested so much money into the company, he’s worried it’ll never get off the ground. Culhane reminds him that Jeff Colby never gives up.
Liam and Eva
For the past few episodes, Eva and Liam have had several interactions together, but in this episode, it looks as though Falliam’s marriage is on the rocks, and Eva is the one setting the stones. Fallon has put her business first, and with Eva as her assistant, she finds herself playing both sides. If things continue down this path, there will be a lot more at stake than people trying to steal a piece of the Dynasty crown.
Dynasty airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Episodes stream the next day on the CW app as well as cwtv.com.

Although she got her musical start releasing music with her sister Gabi DeMartino in 2017, Niki DeMar hadn’t come into her own with a more personal sound relating to her current life events until recently.
DeMar’s debut EP Nights Alone boasts anthems like “Messy Room,” and “25.” When you begin listening to the lyrics intently, it’s clear that DeMar, who has spent a majority of her teen to adult transitional period in the public eye, has felt alone too.
The singer has shared publicly that pandemic living kickstarted this for her. She didn’t like being alone, but when that’s all there is left you have no choice but to face it. As she says, “These songs are the honest conversations I had with myself in my head during these nights in my own silence, standing in the middle of what I used to fear.”
“Alone in My Car”
Everyone has a place they use as an escape from life, DeMar’s just happens to be “Alone in My Car.” The track came out last July and has DeMar contemplating whether she should stay or leave the situation she’s in. The song fits perfectly with the time it was written and released because the world was shut down and there was a lot of uncertainty. Once the distractions you have are gone, the thoughts come rushing back in.
“Messy Room”
Something that DeMar champions in her music are her struggles with her mental health. The topic isn’t taboo, and in fact, the more that we discuss and confront the harsh and ugly realities of our struggles, the more we can destigmatize it. “Messy Room” is a powerful start at doing just that with DeMar reclaiming her mental health. “These bad habits/are ’cause of my mind/something’s gotta give so I can unwind.”
“STUCK”
“Stuck” is the perfect anthem for the lost souls. Everyone’s been there, questioning what and who they want to be for the rest of their lives. For those that feel like their lives are in the “same thing different day” cycle. DeMar puts it perfectly: “Over it all/fed up just a little/tired of watching everyone else figure it out.”
“Stuck” definitely takes influence from the early 2000s pop-punk era with the catchy guitar riffs while still sticking to her roots. She even makes a nod to the unforgettable musical era that’s inspired her creatively, “Romanticizing 2005 instead of my current life.”
“25”
Let’s be honest, when you’re young, you plan out your whole life down to the millisecond. Sometimes, though, things don’t go to plan. The trajectory of your path turns you somewhere else. Whether it’s to teach you a valuable lesson or not, “25” perfectly describes that feeling of existential crisis. There is no time limit. When it’s your time, you’ll have all the things you dreamed of when you were young … but that feeling inside doesn’t suck any less.
“City”
“City” is an extremely personal song for DeMar to share. Up until this point she’s left her current relationship out of her music, but “City” is a beautiful emotional ballad that is heart-shattering. DeMar allows herself to be vulnerable in this moment recounting the personal sacrifices made and the mental war and anguish she’s dealt with within herself now ready to take the next step.
That raw emotion isn’t easily sharable especially with an audience of millions. But the strip-backed track has DeMar able to put into words how so many people feel.
“Bite of Me”
Most of us will never know what it’s like to have to juggle living in the limelight and having our every move judged and examined underneath a microscope. However, there are aspects of “Bite of Me” that are relatable to the masses. Who hasn’t had the unfortunate displeasure of dealing with a fake friend that is just after what you can provide them? Angst and anger are felt especially in the lead-up to the second chorus where DeMar finally lets everything she was holding onto emotionally go.
Nights Alone is available wherever you listen to music now.
Welcome back to another installment of B-Sides and Beyond, where we take an artist near and dear to our hearts and delve into some of their lesser-known works. The subject of this article? The one and only James Bay.
English artist James Bay’s ascent to music industry glory began in the early 2010s with the release of EPs like The Dark of the Morning (2013) and Let It Go (2014) before briefly touring with Hozier in 2014. He then released his debut studio album Chaos and the Calm that same year, which went on to become #1 in the UK as well as #15 in the USA. The single “Hold Back the River” also peaked at #2 in the UK and was certified double-platinum.In 2018, Bay released his second studio album Electric Light. Since then, the singer has released many singles and collaborations, and a third studio album is currently in the works.
Best known for songs like “Let It Go,” “Hold Back the River,” “Us,” and “Wild Love,” Bay has a variety of lesser-known songs from his studio albums as well as singles and collaborations that we will be showcasing today.
“Bad”
Straight off of his 2019 EP Oh My Messy Mind, which also gave us the popular duet “Peer Pressure” with Julia Michaels, is “Bad.” In general, I think Oh My Messy Mind is Bay’s least known EP, simply because a lot of the songs off of his early EPs ended up on his studio albums. Nevertheless, this heartbreaking song about hopelessly craving a love that has run its course is an amazing one, and shows off that classic James Bay falsetto. This song isn’t one commonly spoken of concerning Bay’s works, which I think should definitely change.
“I Found You”
Bay’s second album Electric Light released to mixed reviews. In trying to shake up his sound and image, it seems that Bay strayed away from the jenesais quoi that drew his fanbase to him so strongly in the first place. However, despite the mixed reaction, there were a few standout songs on the album, such as “Pink Lemonade,” “Us,” and “Wild Love” — with “I Found You” being the least known and appreciated one in my humble opinion. This song felt like a link back to the deeper influences of R&B and Soul that we saw in Chaos and the Calm as opposed to the increased notes of pop that pervaded Bay’s second studio album. In my opinion, the combination of rock, indie, soul, R&B and influences (with a little pop thrown in) is one of the best parts of the artist’s unique genre-mixing sound.
“Chew On My Heart”
When Bay released the single “Chew On My Heart,” fans got a surprise when not one, not two, not even three, but four different versions were released: the regular version, acoustic version, the Madism remix, and my personal favorite (seen above), the piano and voice version. This beautiful song details longing for a love that one knows could destroy you. Despite this, you crave and invite it nonetheless because being without them is worse than the alternative.
“Biblical”
Co-written by James Bay, this new single ended up in the lap of British singer-songwriter Calum Scott. Thankfully, we were still blessed by an acoustic duet between Scott and Bay in addition to Scott’s solo version. Scott and Bay’s vocals complement each other perfectly, with Bay serving as the accompanying low harmonies to Scott’s crystal-clear high melodies. As I’ve said before, Bay has a great range, and though he often dips into his higher register in his songs, it’s a refreshing reminder of just how versatile the vocalist is to see him in this less common role. And of course, we never pass up a chance to see Bay show off his guitar prowess.
“Slide”
Another underrated and underappreciated song from Electric Light, “Slide” is the closer for Bay’s second studio album. One of the heavier tracks on the album, “Slide” is an ode to losing someone you love and watching them, well, “slide into the arms of someone else.” While he has some beautiful and emotional ballads about the more joyous aspects of love, a number of songs in Bay’s repoitoire also focus on the flipside of those happy, bouyant aspects — in this case, things not working out. However, despite these bluer aspects, the song is still imbued with a message of hope and purpose despite things not working out, displayed by the outro: an excerpt of “Song” (one of Bay’s favorite Allen Ginsberg poems) read by musician David Ryan Harris.
BONUS – “If I Ain’t Got You” Cover
Fans of James Bay are familiar with his penchant for performing covers; this was showcased in depth during his YouTube mini-concerts during quarantine. In 2015, Bay recorded a cover of Alicia Keys’ classic “If I Ain’t Got You” for a Spotify Session. These Sessions featured “a collection of live, exclusive performances from the most exciting artists in the world.” Bay has been vocal about his love of soul and R&B, and it’s apparent through his music, whether they be originals or covers such as these.
James Bay has continuously displayed his talent with his unique sound influenced by a plethora of genres. There are so many tracks from Chaos and the Calm (especially the Deluxe version) that could have made it onto this list if we had the time.
With his uptick in new projects such as his stint on I’m With the Band, concerts at small venues, and the release of one of his newest collaborations “Chasing Stars” with Marshmello and Alesso, we’re sure we’ll continue to see more of him as time progresses — especially with that mysterious third studio album in the works. In the meantime, we’ll continue to blast our favorite tracks by the long-haired English musician on repeat.
