NYCC Announces New Guests Including Jurnee Smollett

Large-scale conventions in the time of COVID have been incredibly difficult to plan and guest announcements for New York Comic Con have been slow-moving, however, they are starting to announce and they have some amazing talent.

Today on Twitter, NYCC announced Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country, Birds of Prey) will be attending on Saturday, October 9th for photo ops and autographs. You can purchase her photo op now on the website (www.newyorkcomiccon.com) for $80 and her autograph at her table for $50.

The website was also updated with some more new guests. Earlier this week, fans were able to make panel reservations and were surprised when the cast of The Boys happened to be an option. Many, myself included, jumped on that reservation without knowing who would be attending. Well, it looks like we have an idea now. Antony Starr, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, and Karen Fukuhara will be in attendance on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Erin will be available on Fri/Sat). You can purchase their photo ops and autographs right now on NYCC’s website. Antony Starr has photo ops up for $55 and autographs for $50. Jack, Erin, and Karen have photo ops for $50 and autographs for $40.

Some other notable additions are Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek, Orange is the New Black), Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica, Blade Runner), and Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica). All will have photo ops and autographs available for purchase online and onsite.

These new guests join the already-announced lineup of David Harbour, Hayden Christensen, John Cena, George Takei, and William Shatner for what is sure to be an amazing first New York Comic Con back since the pandemic.

‘Midnight Mass’ Episode 1 Recap: Welcome to Crockett Island

0

Come now, weary traveler, and rest your feet, for we have finally arrived on Crockett Island.

The first episode of Mike Flanagan’s limited series Midnight Mass, “Book I: Genesis,” is an introductory affair, taking audiences through the island’s meager population and wares and planting seeds for strange and ominous mysteries that will likely unravel in due time. So what are the major takeaways from the premiere?

Riley Flynn and the accident

First and foremost, we’re introduced to Riley Flynn by way of a terribly tragic accident of his doing. Four years prior to when the show is set, Riley was driving under the influence when he ended up in an accident with another vehicle. The young woman who was driving did not survive. He served four years in prison, and the show’s current timeline begins when he returns to live with his family on Crockett Island (though he had been living in Chicago prior to the accident).

The Flynns are a religious family, and it seems that Riley was at one point as well. However, to his mother’s disappointment, his time spent searching for God in every religion while in prison only led to him becoming an atheist. Riley is still haunted by the woman that he killed, and at this point he feels as if he’s serving no purpose in life. He’s just existing, nothing more.

Crockett Island

Crockett Island, lovingly referred to by the townsfolk as the Crock Pot, currently hosts a population of just 127 residents. As per Riley’s mother, there used to be hundreds of people living on the island. And when people end up leaving, they don’t even bother trying to sell their homes anymore. Getting to the island requires prior planning, because there are only two ferries running at the moment — the Breeze and the Belle.

The island itself is quiet and run down, decorated with small, unassuming shack-like homes. And unfortunately for its residents, who seem to depend on their fishermen, there was an oil spill three years ago. Fishing has become difficult because their catches are strictly limited.

It’s worth noting that there’s a part of the island — the Uppards — where people no longer reside. Now, the area is overrun with stray cats galore. When the boys head to the Uppards to have some fun, they discuss how people who lived on that part of the island used to bury their dead in their yards. And oh … that’s nice, there’s a disturbing, humanlike creature lurking in the bushes, which is likely what is seen killing the cats later in the episode.

The curious case of Monsignor Pruitt and Father Paul Hill

When Riley’s ferry arrives, Miss Beverly Keane is confused to see that Monsignor Pruitt — the island’s 80-year-old priest — has not yet returned from his pilgrimage, despite the fact that they had discussed when he would return. We learn from the Flynns that Pruitt has been quite mentally scattered as of late.

When Beverly sees smoke coming from the rectory’s chimney, she enters expecting to see Monsignor Pruitt. Instead, she meets Father Paul Hill. He tells the town the next day that he was sent by the diocese to fill in for Pruitt for a few weeks. The older man he fell ill on his trip and he’s recovering in a hospital on the mainland.

This is all fine and dandy, besides the fact that earlier in the episode, Father Paul is seen dragging a large chest into the rectory. When he knocks on it, something inside of it knocks back … twice. Later, when the storm arrives, he’s settled on the couch reading a book, and the chest is open behind him with nothing but some sort of ash/dirt inside of it.

To make things even more suspicious, Riley swears that he sees Monsignor Pruitt wandering the beach during the storm in his telltale hat and coat. Although his family doesn’t see him, Riley still rushes outside, and he ends up chasing Pruitt down the beach. Pruitt disappears. There’s no sign of him the next morning … but the beach is covered in dead cats that have washed up from the Uppards, probably courtesy of the disturbing looking thing that was in the bushes.

Erin Greene

Erin Greene is 20 weeks pregnant, and she ran away from Crockett Island years ago. When her mother passed, she finally moved back and took over her job as a teacher. She has a history of sorts with Riley, though the layers on that mystery haven’t been peeled back yet. If nothing else, it’s worth noting that when Riley’s mother sent him family photos while he was in prison, she also included a photo of him with Erin.

Questions that remain

  • What’s lurking in the Uppards and killing the cats?
  • What’s the history between Riley and Erin?
  • Did Riley really see Pruitt on the beach during the storm?
  • Is Father Paul being truthful?
  • What (or who) was in the chest that Father Paul drug into the rectory?

Midnight Mass is now streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for our episode 2 recap.

‘Ted Lasso’ Recap: Season 2, Episode 10 “No Weddings and a Funeral”

After last week’s Beard-centric sidebar and the emotionally heavy episode prior, Ted Lasso is back today with “No Weddings and a Funeral.’ A hilarious and heartbreaking affair, episode 10 sees the team suited up (dress shoes and all) for the funeral of Rebecca’s father. Let’s take a look at some of the major takeaways here.

The funeral

Rebecca is met by another surprise visit from her mother, featuring another scarcely dressed man in her kitchen. She immediately assumes that her parents are having problems again, but instead, her mother informs her that her father has died.

In addition to family and friends, AFC Richmond’s bus shows up at the funeral, packed full of the Greyhounds. Dressed for the occasion and shockingly not wearing sneakers (much to Dani Rojas’ dismay), Rebecca is touched to see that they have all come to support her. She’s less enthused by the arrival of her ex-husband Rupert though, who has come with his new lady and baby in tow. Somebody is missing, though …

Ted’s panic attacks continue

Ted is initially in good spirits as we see him getting dressed for the funeral. In what will forever go down as a truly iconic scene in this series, he struts around his bedroom, dancing as he buttons up his shirt and grabs his tie. However, his elated mood soon falls into the grips of a panic attack that sends him spiraling.

Ted calls Dr. Sharon, and she makes her way over for a house call to help him calm down. When she comes in, we see that Ted absolutely has not been okay lately, given the state that his kitchen and living room are in. This time, it’s easier for Dr. Sharon to get Ted to open up to her, which illustrates how much progress they have already made with therapy. He tells her that he didn’t go to his dad’s funeral because he hated him for leaving him.

September 13, 1991

Ted and Rebecca are kindred spirits in many ways, and we learn in this episode that both of them went through a traumatic event during their childhood on the same exact day … one that made them both hate their fathers. For Ted, this is the day that he arrived at home just as his father took his own life, and he was the one to find him. For Rebecca, this is the day that she caught her father cheating on her mother (and he acted like nothing had happened afterward).

Dr. Sharon coaxes Ted out of his grief, helping him find a light to climb the surface by asking him to tell her about a happy memory that he has with his father. This seems to work, and they share a touching embrace afterward. Meanwhile, Rebecca’s mother admits that she knew about the cheating all along, which hurts Rebecca even more knowing her mother let him treat her like that. The two continue their heart-to-heart, touching on some important topics until the vicar tells them it’s time to come out.

Another wonderful example of their friendship is when Rebecca steps up in front of everyone for her father’s eulogy. Unable to find words to say with all of the complicated feelings that she has for her father, she awkwardly begins to sing “Never Gonna Give You Up” instead. Everyone watches on, slightly confused, until Ted confidently joins in, and then the whole room begins to sing.

Jamie shares the truth

Roy and Keeley hit a momentary roadblock in their relationship earlier this season, though it was something that was resolved fairly quickly (and in a very healthy way). And while Jamie’s return to AFC Richmond initially seemed to pose no threat to their relationship, given the much more mature dynamics of it, this episode certainly brought some things into question.

Earlier in the episode, Roy’s attitude toward the funeral puts Keeley off. Later, we then see Jamie confront Keeley as he admits that she was part of the reason that he returned to the Greyhounds. He tells her that he loves her, and it’s an odd, tense moment between them. As soon as he leaves, Roy shows up behind her and launches into an apology for his behavior, capping it off with an “I love you” for her as well. (Did anyone else think Roy f***ing Kent was about to propose to Keeley at a funeral? No? Just me?)

Pressing pause on Rebecca and Sam

After finally giving in to their desires, we see in this episode that Rebecca and Sam have been spending much of their free time (sleeping) together now, though they’ve kept their relationship a secret. This makes for an interesting situation for the two when Sam arrives at the funeral, because it’s clear he wants to comfort Rebecca, but he’s unable to do so without blowing their cover.

After much yelling and badgering (apologies to the vicar) between Rebecca, her mother, Keeley, Sassy, and Nora, Keeley is quick to surmise that the secret man is none other than Sam. By the end of the funeral, Rebecca has had a lot to think about throughout the day, and she makes the decision that she needs to break things off with him.

As she’s on her way to do so, Sam pulls her into a closet, but not for what she would expect. Rather than diving in for a secret kiss, Sam pulls her in for a wholesome and supportive hug instead. She eventually gets to her point though, explaining that Sam is wonderful, and it’s a bad thing because he could really hurt her. Rebecca needs time to figure out why that scares her so much.

What’s Rupert up to?

As Rupert goes to leave the funeral, he informs Rebecca that he’s convinced Bex to give up her shares in Richmond. They will be giving them to Rebecca instead. This all seems fine and dandy, but it’s what happens afterward that’s suspicious. As Rupert passes by Nate, he leans in to say something to him. Though we don’t hear what it is, we’ll likely find out soon enough, and it can’t be anything good.

Top Ted-isms of the week

Apple TV+

Ted’s usual humor was shelved this week for something much more poignant. Because of this, we’ll highlight an emotional Ted quote that really hit home and explains why he cares so much about getting through to people now:

“And I knew right then and there that I was never going to let anybody get by me without understanding they might be hurting inside, you know.”

‘Bros’: Billy Eichner Film Announces All LGBTQIA+ Cast

0

In a first for Hollywood, Universal has announced the first ever all LGBTQIA+ cast for a major studio film. Bros is written by Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller, who will also direct. The film stars Eichner and Luke McFarlane as “two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy.”

The rest of the cast includes TS Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz, and Guy Branum (who previously wrote for Billy on the Street with Eichner). According to the studio, all roles, including heterosexual characters, will be played by LGBTQIA+ actors and performers. Eichner commented on the historic casting in a statement.

“I could not be more proud or excited about the historic nature of the all openly LGBTQ+ cast of ‘Bros.’ After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ+ characters, it is a long overdue dream come true to be able to assemble this remarkable, hilarious cast. And while ‘Bros’ may be the first of its kind in several ways, my real hope is that it is only the first of many opportunities for openly LGBTQ+ ensembles to shine and show the world all we are capable of as actors, beyond just being the wacky sidekick, token queer or a straight movie star’s ‘gay best friend.’ And beyond all of that, this cast is f**king hysterical and you’re going to love them.”

Stoller, Eichner, Judd Apatow, and Josh Church will executive produce the film. Bros is set to hit theaters August 12, 2022.

The cast is already back shooting the fourth season, which we anticipate will drop either in January or towards the summer, as the third season did.

Roswell, New Mexico stars Jeanine Mason, Nathan Dean, Michael Vlamis, Lily Cowles, Michael Trevino, Amber Midthunder, Tyler Blackburn, and Heather Hemmens.

Make sure to tune into Roswell, New Mexico on The CW on Mondays.
