A Wild Story Awaits in New ‘Pam & Tommy’ Trailer

0

Following the first sneak peek at Hulu’s Pam & Tommy back in November, a new trailer for the upcoming series has been revealed.

Pam & Tommy is set in the “Wild West” early days of the internet, following the infamous true story of the sex tape of Pamela Anderson (Lily James) and Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan). After it was stolen from the couple’s home by a disgruntled contractor (Seth Rogen), the video evolved from an underground bootleg-VHS curiosity to a full-blown global sensation once it made its way onto the web in 1997.

This eight-part Hulu Original Series is a love story, a crime caper, and a cautionary tale. It will explore the intersection of privacy, technology and celebrity by tracing the origins of the world’s current Reality TV Era back to a stolen tape that was seen by millions but meant to have an audience of just two.

Watch the trailer below.

Pam & Tommy will also star Nick Offerman as porn impresario Milton Ingley and Taylor Schilling as Erica Gauthier.

The series is written by Rob Siegel and directed by I, Tonya‘s Craig Gillespie.

Pam & Tommy will premiere on Hulu on February 2.

‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Recap: Episode 2 “The Tribes of Tatooine”

Following last week’s premiere of The Book of Boba Fett, this week’s episode, “The Tribes of Tatooine,” sees Boba Fett and Fennec seemingly trace the origins of the assassin back to the Mayor. However, the former bounty hunter has bigger problems to worry about now that the Twins, Jabba the Hutt’s cousins, have arrived on Tatooine to stake claim to the throne. We also learn more about Fett’s time with the Tusken Raiders.

Mayor Mok Shaiz

As promised, Fennec brings the assassin back to the Palace alive. They learn that he’s from the Order of the Night Wind, which means he absolutely isn’t going to answer any of their questions. Instead, he stares at them defiantly. They drop him down below to see if the rancor will get him to talk, at which point he immediately says that the Mayor is the one that sent him. Not that there was a rancor down there anyway …

Boba Fett and Fennec head out to pay the Mayor a visit, receiving a cold welcome and more snide jabs about his choice not to be carried around Mos Espa on a litter. Fett pays them no mind, pushing past to get into the room where the Mayor, Mok Shaiz, sits. Mok Shaiz claims that he wasn’t the one that sent the assassin, but he pays Boba Fett for bringing him in. Although Fett feels slighted for being treated like he’s still a bounty hunter, he takes the payment regardless in lieu of the Mayor’s lack of a tribute. The Mayor suggests Fett go and see Madam Garsa at the Sanctuary.

A power struggle begins

Madam Garsa seems nervous as soon as Boba Fett arrives, and she informs him that Jabba the Hutt’s cousins — the Twins — have come to lay their claim to the throne. Fett is perplexed, as he was under the assumption they were preoccupied on Nal Hutta. The patrons grow quiet as a drumbeat sounds in the distance, and Fett and his crew go outside to find the Twins being carried through the streets on an enormous litter. They tell Fett that they have business to discuss, but he remains firm that the throne is his property. The Twins, on the other hand, believe that because it was Jabba’s, now it’s theirs. A dangerous looking Wookiee — Black Krrsantan — steps out, prepared to fight, but Fett isn’t bothered.

Boba Fett tells the Twins that they’ll have to kill him if they want to take the territory back. However, bloodshed is bad for business, so the Hutts opt to deal with the issue later. They warn the Daimyo to sleep lightly. Afterward, Fennec reminds him that he’ll need to get permission to kill the Twins.

The train

As Fett sleeps, more of his memories from his time with the Tusken Raiders come to the surface. After earning their respect for killing the sand creature, they teach him how to fight. However, they’re interrupted by a low rumbling noise in the distance, and Fett is confused as the Tuskens begin to panic. A train goes by, and many of the Tuskens are shot and killed as it passes.

As they mourn the dead, Fett gets an idea when he sees a group of raiders pass by on speeder bikes. He follows them to a small cantina, where they’re stirring up trouble. He proceeds to fight them all, utilizing some of his new fighting skills from the Tuskens. He returns to the camp the next morning with the stolen speeder bikes, and he tells the Tusken Raiders that this is how they’re going to stop the train.

Though it’s a difficult process, Boba Fett manages to teach them how to ride the speeders. When the train passes by again, they’re prepared. Fett and a group of the Tuskens manage to use the speeder bikes to get onto the train, and given their proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, they take control and bring the train crashing to a stop. As they hold the remaining occupants prisoner, Fett learns that they’re smugglers carrying Sansanna spice. They had been killing the Tuskens in order to protect their route. Boba Fett makes it clear that the sands are no longer free for them to pass because the Tuskens lay ancestral claim to the Dune Sea. If they want to use that route, they will need to pay a toll. And any future deaths? They’ll be returned tenfold.

A gift and a journey

As a thank you for his efforts, the Tuskens present Boba Fett with a gift — a lizard. The creature promptly crawls inside of his nose, which baffles him. As things start to grow hazy, the Tuskens tell Fett that the lizard will guide him from inside of his head. He embarks on a strange journey through the desert under the night sky, finding a tree. As he struggles through memories of the Sarlacc and his childhood, he snaps off a branch, which he brings back to the camp the next morning. Having truly accepted him into their ranks, the Tuskens finally outfit Boba Fett with black robes, and they teach him how to craft his own gaderffii with the stick he brought back.

Later that evening, Boba Fett and the tribe dance around the fire.

The next episode of The Book of Boba Fett will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on Wednesday, January 12. Stay tuned for our weekly coverage, including episodic recaps and more.

‘Star Wars: The High Republic’: What to Expect in Phase II

It’s the beginning of the end of Phase I: Light of the Jedi of Star Wars: The High Republic. On January 4, Luscasfilm released The High Republic: The Fallen Star, the last adult novel of the first phase. Other stories within this last wave are set to be released over the next couple of months, which means Phase II of the publishing campaign is already in the works.

There is a lot to look forward to in the second phase. Here’s what we know about it so far:

Phase II begins in October 2022

That’s right! We won’t have to wait too long before getting more High Republic stories. Phase II, titled “Quest of the Jedi,” is coming this fall, and we’re definitely looking forward to it!

We won’t be picking up wherever we leave off

Phase I took us on a journey of perseverance, and while we need to know what happens next, we’re going to have to wait. Phase II is taking a step into the past — 150 years in the past to be exact. According to starwars.com, this phase will follow a “very familiar Star Wars storytelling order” and tell “new tales that serve as prequels to what we’ve experienced so far.”

New Authors will be contributing

It won’t just be Claudia Gray, Cavan Scott, Charles Soule, Justina Ireland, and Daniel José Older at the helm of this era. Authors Zoraida Córdova, George Mann, Tessa Gratton, and Lydia Kang will be joining the crew and contributing books and comics to Phase II. Córdova, Mann, and Kang have all written or contributed to Star Wars books in the past. Gratton will contribute a short story to the forthcoming anthology Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith.

We will get to see a hero’s origin story

An older Jedi we’ve gotten to know in the first phase is finally getting his origin story. Soule will be writing about Porter Engle’s past in a new Marvel comic that will reveal how the Jedi-turned-cook became known as the “Blade of Bardotta.”

We learned a lot more about Phase II during the anniversary edition of the Star Wars: The High Republic Show, including the fact that we will get some Phase II hints in Star Wars: The High Republic: Mission to Disaster, which is set to be released on March 1.

Also during the anniversary special, Claudia Gray revealed that not everybody survives in The High Republic: The Fallen Star. So get your tissues ready! The Fallen Star is out now.

Interview: Talking ‘In Every Generation’ With Author Kendare Blake [EXCLUSIVE]

0

Readers are taken back to Sunnydale and the Buffyverse for a new Slayer-witch journey in Kendare Blake’s In Every Generation. Part of an upcoming trilogy, the book follows the new vampire, Slayer Frankie Rosenberg’s journey. Frankie and her group of Scoobies go against an unknown evil while trying to find answers about what happened to all the other Slayers. Fans will meet new characters and even some fan favorites returning from the television series.

This world is brought to life by New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake (Antigoddess), whose work is sort of dark, always violent, and features passages describing food from when she writes while hungry. She lives and writes in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband, their cat son Tyrion Cattister, red Doberman dog son Obi-Dog Kenobi, rottie mix dog daughter Agent Scully, and naked Sphynx cat son Armpit McGee.

Recently, we had the opportunity to interview Blake. She talks about writing for the various characters, a favorite moment in the book, the writing process, upcoming projects, and more.

Note: Some spoilers beyond this point.

Nerds & Beyond: I have to begin by saying I love the names of your dog and cat children.

Kendare Blake: Thank you! This pleases me greatly, as they’re the center of my universe.

Nerds & Beyond: Congratulations on In Every Generation! It honestly was hard to put down, and it brought me back to the original feel of when I first found the Buffy the Vampire Salyer series.

Kendare Blake: Thank you AGAIN! That’s precisely what I was aiming for: that classic Buffy feel. That’s what I wanted more of: the quips, the camaraderie, the exasperated Watchers. The bitchin’ fight scenes.

Nerds & Beyond: How did the concept of bringing the Buffyverse back in a trilogy come about?

Kendare Blake: I don’t really know. By the time the publisher came to me, they had the premise and the three-book structure, and it had all been signed off on by the Buffy creative team. Very enthusiastically, I was told.

Nerds & Beyond: How much liberty did you have with writing or mentioning the original characters like Willow, Oz, etc.?

Kendare Blake: I had pretty much free rein. Of course, I never really tugged on that rein. Like, I never tried to kill Oz just to see if they’d allow it. Why would I? I wanted more of those classic characters, and I wanted them to be as true to themselves as I could manage. It was nerve-wracking to start out, honestly. But after those first scenes, it was the best time. I really miss them. Let’s see them on screen again! Come on; everyone’s doing it!

Nerds & Beyond: When writing for characters so many people are familiar with, was there anyone in particular that you were nervous about writing for?

Kendare Blake: Willow. I feel like she’s the one who, as a fandom, we are the most protective of. And much like Buffy, Willow contains multitudes. She’s awkward yet bold. Easily wigged out yet such a warrior. Even her tones and mannerisms are varied, so it was a challenge to pin her down and make her feel definitively Willow because Willow is so many things. Take, for example, her famous “resolve face.” It’s adorable and a little babyish, but at the same time, you don’t doubt her resolve.

Aside from Willow, though, I do have to mention how completely intimidated I would have been writing Buffy. I mean, she’s Buffy. I didn’t want her to be missing and presumed dead any more than anyone else, but I was relieved to not have to tackle her from page one.

Nerds & Beyond: And speaking of characters, readers are introduced to new characters with big shoes to fill. Where did the inspiration for them come from?

Kendare Blake: Frankie being Willow’s witchy daughter was in the pitch. So was Jake being Oz’s nephew/cousin and Hailey being Vi’s little sister. Sigmund, who joins the group as their necessary scholarly component (since Spike is definitely not filling that role), was noted to be a Sage demon, but I had to figure out what that was.

For the most part, I turned them loose and let them figure things out. There were a few drafts where I wrote extra scenes, shoving them together, like screen tests for chemistry. I’d put Frankie and Sigmund in a room to see what happened. I’d let Hailey and Jake or Jake and Sigmund be on their own for a minute and get a read on how they played off of each other. Those scenes usually didn’t stay, but I love that kind of character work. It’s fun.

Nerds & Beyond: I love the character of Frankie and am wondering which Hogwarts house would she be in?

Kendare Blake: Frankie would be…a Ravenpuff? No, she would be a Huffle-dor. Frankie is very caring, and she keeps an eye out for people’s feelings. She’s very loyal, even when she’s being bristly with Jake. And she’s brave. She is not, however, the most natural slayer. She fights like Sailor Moon — falling on her face, spinning out of the way while wailing — and while that will get better with practice, I don’t think it’s ever going to go away entirely.

Nerds & Beyond: Do you have a favorite moment in the book when you were writing?

Kendare Blake: The times when Frankie can land a good quip mid-battle. I love those moments that pop up where she’s like, holy crap; I am a Slayer. And then she promptly almost dies. Also, there’s a scene with Spike early on where Willow does magic on him for practice, and he freaks out. I love Spike when he’s a big baby. A Big Bad Baby.

Nerds & Beyond: I know this can be a hard question, but who is your favorite character from Buffy?

Kendare Blake: This used to be a harder question, but lately, I’ve come to realize that my favorite character is Buffy. She’s the one. That scene in season 7 with Spike in the abandoned house right before she goes to beat the crap out of Caleb? I could give her that speech. Hang on, that sounds creepy.

Nerds & Beyond: Do you have a favorite episode of Buffy?

Kendare Blake: No. I can’t pick a favorite, favorite. I can point to the same standouts that most fans can: “Hush,” “Once More With Feeling,” “Becoming Parts One and Two,” “Band Candy,” but I love so many moments from that series. The scene from season 6 where Buffy gets stuck in the time loop trying to sell that mummy hand? Sarah Michelle Gellar slapping that mummy hand and saying, “It’s not dead, it’s just playing dead! Little Scamp!” is on repeat in my head right now.

Nerds & Beyond: Does the writing process or style differ from an already created world or one you are creating from scratch?

Kendare Blake: Of course! Most of the work is done for me; now, I just have to remain faithful to the rules. But there are still opportunities to stretch the mythology, which is both fun and intimidating. And it’s kind of a warm fuzzy knowing I’m working in a world that so many people already love. And it’s absolutely paralyzing knowing some of those people are going to hate what I’m doing to it.

Mostly though, writing in Sunnydale was a joy. Utter, gleeful joy. I have never had more fun with work. Every time I got edit notes, I was like, YES, MORE TIME IN SUNNYDALE. Even changing things, reworking scenes, it was still basically me at my desk screaming, WHEEE like that little pig in that old Geico commercial.

Nerds & Beyond: What do you hope readers will take away after reading In Every Generation?

Kendare Blake: Classic Buffy feelings! Nostalgia! I hope it makes them remember all the things they loved about the show. I hope it feels kind of like watching a lost episode. And I hope it makes them want to rewatch the series for the hundredth time.

Nerds & Beyond: What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects you can mention?

Kendare Blake: Well, there’s more Buffy coming in 2023 with the next book in the trilogy. In book two, our Scoobies are a cemented, close-knit team, so I have a lot of fun with relationships in that one, evolving them and throwing them curveballs.

And in Fall 2023, my next fantasy (book) comes out, which currently has no title but is about a girl training to join an order of mystical women warriors. Until it has a title, I’m calling it AMAZON JEDIS, which should give you the basic vibe.

Nerds & Beyond: So, for my last question, here at Nerds & Beyond, obviously, we love embracing our nerdy side. What are some things that you like to nerd out to?

Kendare Blake: Some things I nerd out to: 80’s music, Final FantasyBuffy (obviously), Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, the movies of Val Kilmer, GargoylesGame of Thrones, Stephen King, and Rick and Morty.

Thank you, Kendare Blake for taking the time to answer our questions. You can get your copy of In Every Generation here!

‘Dexter: New Blood’: A Closer Look at Episode 9 and What It Means for the Finale

0

In the penultimate episode of Dexter: New Blood, Dexter finally shares everything with Harrison, finding a… unique way to bond. While this was a massive weight off Dexter’s shoulders, he’s far from out of the woods, as the episode ended with Angela receiving some big information. With only one episode left, there’s still quite a bit to consider.

Warning: Spoilers beyond this point.

At first glance, watching Dexter come clean about the very thing that defines him seems like a not-totally-horrible thing. From the original run through now, he could probably name the people he’s been fully honest with on one hand (maybe one and a half). So, it’s no wonder he was in such a cheery mood after telling Harrison. And I’ll admit, it was kind of nice seeing Harrison accept the information in stride. These two finally have someone who truly understands them. Harrison can channel his own darkness. Dexter can once again unleash his Dark Passenger without external judgment. However, after staring at my screen in stunned silence and sitting with the episode, something felt a bit off about the whole thing. But first, a bit of recap.

A Father-Son Bonding Activity

dexter new blood episode 9
Dana Starbard/SHOWTIME

After Harrison knows mostly everything, he’s ready to take down Kurt (though he doesn’t yet know that includes murder). Together, he and Dexter work through the Code. They surveil Kurt’s property and find the area where Kurt disappeared in episode 8. That night, they go seek proof, finding Kurt’s embalming area and an extensive trophy room where he keeps the women he’s killed — which now includes Molly Park. When Harrison asks, Dexter confirms he killed Wiggles, and Harrison says Kurt needs to die, too.

Cue Kurt winding up on the kill table. Dexter does what he does best, checking in with Harrison throughout. When the pre-kill banter ends, Dexter kills Kurt as Harrison watches. Harrison is unquestionably shocked watching his father actually kill someone (and maybe even a little afraid). Regardless, he sticks through it while Dexter begins the disposal process. Harrison becomes overwhelmed when a flow of blood triggers memories of Rita’s death. He heads outside to wait. Then, he and Dexter go to the incinerator to burn Kurt’s body. Harrison notes the Dark Passenger is quiet. He adds that it’s good no more women will get hurt, but his enthusiasm turns into something closer to apprehension.

Like Father, Not Quite Like Son

dexter new blood episode 9
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

As previously mentioned, something about the episode felt odd to me in an “I’m terrified about what this might mean” kind of way. First and foremost, it’s clear Dexter currently doesn’t regret telling Harrison everything and walking him through the Code. I mean, why would he? This was a huge weight off Dexter’s shoulders. Harrison even compared him to Batman! In his quest to be a decent and present father though, Dexter forgot to actually consider Harrison. In all fairness, Dexter attempts to parent in the way he learned from Harry. However, his excitement at the bonding that really was happening swept him up and away. Maybe Harrison wasn’t ready to watch Dexter work.

Harrison has done some questionable things, sure. But if his reaction to watching Dexter kill signals anything, it’s that his darkness doesn’t match Dexter’s. I don’t think Harrison has a real desire to kill the way Dexter does. While he did seem to genuinely want Kurt gone after everything, killing seems to be more of a theoretical than a reality; it would’ve been enough to KNOW Kurt was dead without having to watch Dexter actually do it. Near the end of the episode, anything Harrison said or did comes across as more for Dexter’s benefit and a desire to maintain that bond. I’m interested to see how much (if any) of this Harrison will be able to process in the next episode. He also now carries the burden of knowing Dexter’s secret.

Angela Bishop and the Mystery Note

dexter new blood episode 9
Seacia Pavao/SHOWTIME

Beyond whatever happens with Dexter and Harrison, episode 9 leaves some other questions behind. Namely, the mystery person who left Angela the note. We already know Kurt (and more than likely Elric) knew Dexter killed Matt Caldwell. Surely Operation Expose Jim Lindsay is more than a two-man job, so who else could be in on it? Personally, I think Edward Olsen is a viable option. Though we haven’t seen him since episode 3, his character seemed important enough that they can’t be done with him yet. He’s a wealthy and powerful man with access to resources. With Kurt dead, Olsen could be a formidable opponent for Dexter.

Furthermore, Angela now finds herself with a hefty load of information to process. First, she knows Molly is in trouble (and we know Molly is dead). Currently, all signs point to Dexter for her. So, he is likely her prime suspect in Molly’s disappearance. While she has yet to firmly decide that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher, the new information about Matt’s death will also confirm that, BHB or not, Dexter is a killer. In the finale promo, there’s a moment at the end where it appears Dexter is getting booked. It’s likely Angela takes the news about Matt seriously and finds enough evidence to arrest Dexter. This may also lead to Dexter facing a line of questioning that gets Angela from point A (Matt) to point BHB. One way or another, I think Angela will learn about Dexter’s pastime of choice.

The Fate of Dexter Morgan

dexter new blood episode 9
Robert Clark/SHOWTIME

New Blood was created to give Dexter a proper ending after the original run finished. In my opinion, the show’s done just that thus far. But what will become of our beloved antihero in the end? Again, the episode 10 promo suggests arrest, but I don’t think prison is the final stop for Dexter. Should he find himself booked by ILPD, I think he’ll manage to worm his way out of it. He’s crafty that way. (I also choose to believe that hinting at arrest in a promo means he’ll walk out mostly scot-free. Or maybe I’m way off base. We’ll see.) So, where might Dexter be heading?

Note: The following paragraph contains major spoilers for the final book of Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter series.

Keeping in mind this show was originally set as a limited (and therefore mostly close-ended) series, the one ending I keep coming back to is that of Dexter Is Dead by Jeff Lindsay. It ends with Dexter planting a bomb on a yacht. In true Dexter style, he unravels all his thoughts. But as the book draws to a close, Dexter and readers are left mid-sentence as the yacht presumably explodes, killing Dexter. I can say with certainty New Blood won’t end like this (unless the writers pull something truly wild). However, I do think the show will ultimately end with Dexter dying (for real). At some point, Dexter will need to answer for his crimes; that much is inevitable. And frankly, it’s hard to imagine any other ending for him. (Admittedly, I’m not great at confidently forming theories, but this one feels right to me.)

It’s still anyone’s guess who may or may not stop Dexter once and for all. And while I won’t speculate much more on the matter (I’ve gone on long enough), if anyone’s going to send Dexter Morgan to his maker, there’d be excellent poetic justice with Harrison being the one to do so. After all, Dexter fits the Code.

The Dexter: New Blood finale airs Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on Showtime. Find our weekly recaps here and the rest of our coverage here.
