Lily James and Sebastian Stan to Appear on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ This Week

0

The stars of Hulu’s upcoming series Pam & Tommy, Lily James and Sebastian Stan, are set to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, February 1 ahead of the show’s premiere this week.

The eight-episode limited series is written by Rob Siegel and directed by I, Tonya‘s Craig Gillespie.

“Set in the Wild West early days of the Internet, ‘Pam & Tommy’ is based on the incredible true story of the Pamela Anderson (Lily James) and Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) sex tape. Stolen from the couple’s home by a disgruntled contractor (Seth Rogen), the video went from underground bootleg-VHS curiosity to full-blown cultural obsession when it hit the Web in 1997. A love story, crime caper and cautionary tale rolled into one, the eight-part original limited series explores the intersection of privacy, technology and celebrity, tracing the origins of our current Reality TV Era to a stolen tape seen by millions but meant to have an audience of just two.”

The series also stars Nick Offerman as porn impresario Milton Ingley and Taylor Schilling as Erica Gauthier.

Other guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on February 1 will include Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and musical guest Eric Bellinger.

Pam & Tommy will premiere on Hulu on February 2. Stay tuned for our review.

‘A Discovery of Witches’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 4

In the latest episode of A Discovery of Witches, Diana, Phoebe, and Sarah’s research pays off as they find TJ Weston and obtain the final missing page from the Book of Life. Meanwhile, Chris and Miriam make an unfortunate discovery about the origins of blood rage, and Diana gives birth to her and Matthew’s children — Philip and Rebecca.

Finding TJ Weston and the final page

Diana, Phoebe, and Sarah’s search for TJ Weston continues, but Phoebe’s human methods of searching for him haven’t proven to be useful thus far. Diana tells them that she’s been working on a locator spell, which will make things much easier, but it requires a witch for each element. They’re going to need to find a coven. It’s a risky move, because Knox will hear about it, but Diana, Gallowglass, and Sarah set off through London anyway in search of the area where Goody Alsop used to live. A witch finds them, recognizing who Diana is, and she introduces her to the coven. They agree to help, and they obtain TJ’s coordinates using Diana’s spell.

The trio arrives at TJ Weston’s house to find a frightened daemon who goes by the name Timothy. He lets Diana and Sarah come inside, but not Gallowglass. Timothy is nervous and scattered as he talks to them and plays the piano, and the inside of his house is a mess. Diana and Sarah offer to perform a spell to locate the page that they’re looking for, but he doesn’t want them to use magic, and he doesn’t really want to give it to them anyway because it’s all that he has left of his ancestors.

When they exit the house empty-handed, Gallowglass offers to go inside and get the page, but Diana doesn’t want him to use force and scare Timothy even more. She understands that Gallowglass means well, but she ensures him that she can do this on her own. He agrees with her, stating that she had that same look of determination on her face on her first day at Yale. And so his secret is finally out. Diana is shocked to hear this, and Gallowglass admits that Philippe asked him to look out for her until Matthew found her. And he did it gladly. Diana apologizes to him, but Gallowglass says that he knew she was never meant to be his. She tells him that she couldn’t have asked for a better guardian, wipes a tear from her face, and thanks him.

Their next stop is to visit another daemon who might be able to help: Agatha. She returns to Timothy’s house with Diana, and he’s surprised to see a daemon working with a witch. Regardless, with another daemon present, he’s much more receptive to their plea this time around. He gives Diana the final missing page from the Book of Life. As they go to leave, Agatha reassures the other daemon that he’s not alone anymore. He has her and an entire community of their kind. As Diana and Agatha head back to the car, Diana realizes that she’s going into labor.

Peter Knox continues to leave destruction in his wake

A crazed Peter Knox arrives at the coven headquarters where Diana was earlier, tracking the trail of her magic like a mad dog. The witch that’s there doesn’t seem too phased by his arrival as she tells him that she’s under Father Hubbard’s protection, so he can’t hurt her. However, she hits a sore spot when she brings up how he was kicked out of the Congregation for killing another witch, and he eventually ends up throwing her out of the room. He heads over to the table where they performed the locator spell on Timothy, and he’s able to find his house thanks to the leftover traces of it.

While he doesn’t beat Agatha and Diana to Timothy’s house, he pays the daemon a visit all the same. After dropping Diana off at Fernando’s, Agatha goes back to Timothy’s house, and she finds a disturbing scene. It appears that Knox tortured Timothy to the brink of death in order to find out where the page is. He dies after Agatha arrives.

A startling blood rage discovery

Miriam hurries over to Chris’ lab to hear about his latest discovery. He tells her that after comparing Ransome’s blood samples to the ones that they already had, their research has become much more complicated than they first thought. Blood rage is a developmental anomaly. When Matthew was reborn as a vampire, something in his human noncoding DNA reacted to the vampire genes from Ysabeau. Meaning that Matthew possessed the triggers that the blood rage gene needed in order to “express” itself.

Because Matthew hasn’t been answering any of her calls or messages for weeks, Miriam is forced to travel to New Orleans to share the news with him. He’s not happy to hear that their discovery means that they may not be able to find a cure for blood rage after all. Moving forward, the answer to their questions will need to be found by researching humans, not vampires.

The next morning, Miriam confronts Matthew for stewing, and she tells him that he needs to go home to be there for Diana when the babies are born. He can’t support her from New Orleans. She reminds him that going home without a cure doesn’t mean that he’s failed as a father. Afterward, Matthew immediately calls Baldwin and asks him to meet. His brother is unimpressed about Matthew’s plans to tear apart the family with a scion. He refuses to lend his support, and he tells Matthew that he can’t respect his decision.

The babies are born

After Agatha drops Diana back off at Fernando’s house, Sarah runs a bath for her and tries to help ease her labor pains while they wait for the others to get home. Matthew rushes upstairs, with Marcus hot on his heels ready to deliver the babies. (It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to see Dr. Whitmore in action!) The babies are eventually born later that evening — a boy and girl, who they name Philip and Rebecca in honor of Philippe and Diana’s mom, respectively.

It’s a joyous occasion downstairs as everyone else celebrates the birth of two healthy babies. However, it’s a difficult scene for Gallowglass to watch as he realizes that his job protecting Diana is truly over now. Pained, he gets on his motorcycle and leaves.

‘Nancy Drew’ Recap: Season 3, Episode 13 “The Ransom of the Forsaken Soul”

Well Drew Crew, we’ve reached the end of the road for season 3 of Nancy Drew. “The Ransom of the Forsaken Soul” contained plot twist after plot twist, some heartbreaking almost-deaths, and the love confession of Nace shippers’ dreams — with one major catch. As we head into a hiatus with an uncertain future (the show is not yet renewed for a fourth season, which this finale’s cliffhanger makes even more of a necessity than before), let’s dive in to what happened!

Double Crossing Blues

Colin Bentley/The CW

Nancy and the crew meet Temperance in the woods as Nancy calls for a truce. She’s bargaining for the soul splitter to save Ace — she’ll give Temperance her blood in exchange. This isn’t their preferred plan. We flash back to Ace trying to steal the soul splitter from Icarus Hall before being magically thrown away. George and Carson use their lawyer skills to try to get the town to issue a mandatory evacuation order, which fails. Ryan is after an artifact Addy knows of that can kill witches as a plan B. In the present, Temperance takes the deal, calling the Drew Crew “the world’s saddest album cover.”

At Icarus Hall, Nancy gives the blood as George uses the splitter on Ace. But it turns out the Drew Crew double crossed Temperance, poisoning Nancy’s blood. Temperance is knocked out when the blood is transferred. They give Nancy the antidote as the final piece of Charity’s soul flies into Temperance, making Ace safe. They leave Temperance there for the Copperhead to find. But as they rush away into the woods, they find the monster dead on the ground, minus his hearts. Inside Icarus Hall, they find Temperance gone. She was playing them, and she has everything she needs now.

Ryan heads to the Glass House to get the hatchet Addy mentioned. The couple who answers claim not to know anything about the supernatural, but when Ryan points out they have a demon repelling device and that he knows the keeper of the Horseshoe Bay Historical Society, they invite him in, giving each other suspicious glances.

George and Nick are desperately trying to evacuate Horseshoe Bay by themselves with little success, while George gets in a dig at Nick for apparently going back to Florida. Park and Carson try to start the emergency sirens at the police station to warn the town as Temperance begins her ritual. Nancy rushes to stop Temperance, pleading with her that the people who are here now aren’t the same people that hurt Temperance then. Temperance hits back, asking Nancy, “Have you convinced yourself you care about Horseshoe Bay because it’s the only place you’ll ever matter?” (Ouch!) Temperance reveals that the only reason she ever had a child is because the spell specifies a living soul must be used, and she pulls the final piece of Charity’s soul out. Ryan sneaks up behind Temperance with the axe, but when he throws it, she launches the soul piece at him, sending shards of the axe flying. It turns out that Temperance knows everything that’s going to happen and when from her tarot card readings.

She and Nancy struggle on the ground as Temperance tries to get the last piece into the ground, which has started to open up. Nancy uses Ryan’s axe and kills Temperance, keeping the veil sealed as Charity’s soul passes on. At The Claw, the crew regroups, with Ryan having been hit with shrapnel. He’s fine overall, and everyone breathes a sigh of relief thinking this is all over.

A Bad Dream

Colin Bentley/The CW

Ace pulls Nancy aside to ask about what Temperance meant at the Veil when she called Ace Nancy’s “blind spot.” Nancy asks Ace to walk her home (without actually saying the words “I love you,” because this is Nancy Hudson Drew we’re talking about.) But the romantic moment is instantly interrupted when Ryan collapses, gasping for air. In one of the most wrenching and disturbing scenes we’ve ever seen on Nancy Drew, Carson calls 911 as Nancy rushes to Ryan’s side. Ryan begs Nancy not to leave him and tells her he’s scared and doesn’t want to die. She sobs, saying “I’ve got you, Dad, don’t go” for the first time as he grasps her hand and repeats, “I’m not ready” over and over. Ryan dies in Nancy’s arms. Riley Smith deserves recognition here for how brilliantly he played this moment. His Ryan has always been funny, with some gravitas from his abusive childhood. But in that moment, he is a terrified child, and it physically hurts to watch him die in the arms of the daughter who he has grown to adore.

We flash to one month later. Ryan’s funeral has passed, and Nancy is alone in her room as she hears Ryan’s voice tell her to finish this the way he did at the Veil. She’s obsessed with finding Ryan’s missing car, thinking it’s the key to finding out why he died. It’s apparent Nancy is lost with grief. At The Claw, Bess is offered Hannah’s role as the keeper, but she tells Nancy she turned it down. Both she and Addy want a break from the supernatural. George is studying for law school with Carson’s help, and Nick is heading home to Florida for a while while Addy runs the youth center. Even Park arrives and tells Nancy he’s heading back to Boston since the Frozen Hearts Killer case is now resolved.

Everyone is moving on but Nancy. Ace arrives with sorbet as he tries to comfort her (a ritual he has apparently kept up since Ryan’s death. Ace tells her he’s glad to see her and that he misses Ryan too and understands what she’s going through. Nancy shares that she still feels guilty for both her murder of Temperance and Ryan’s death.

As usual, Ace can’t let Nancy think badly about herself. He walks her around town, determined to show her all of the people that she saved (and even revealing that Connor and Lily are back together!). Ace says, “They love you. I’m with them.” Nancy tells Ace she needs to tell him something, and they head back to his apartment. In a scene that has been three seasons in the making, the two have sex as they finally confess their feelings for each other. It is so hot they literally crack the barometer in his room (I promise this is relevant to the plot, folks!) Nancy wakes up in Ace’s arms the next morning, so in love and sweet that Nace shippers everywhere were jumping for joy. Nancy tells Ace to stay in bed as she grabs breakfast for them. Outside, Nancy sees Ryan’s missing car being towed and asks who owns it now.

The entire crew gathers at the youth center for Nick’s going away party, all giving lovely speeches in his honor. Ace and Nancy drive home that night — turns out the witchy couple he got the axe from bought Ryan’s car. Nancy wonders aloud what their connection to Ryan is. At the last second, Nancy’s car is hit head on from out of nowhere. Ace is thrown from the car (wear your seatbelt, kids!) with Nancy covered in his blood and screaming for help on the side of the road as he dies. Turns out a still-alive Temperance was the other driver, and as she saunters up to a devastated Nancy, she says, “Should have watched your blind spots.”

Make You Feel My Love

Colin Bentley/The CW

Turns out, Temperance orchestrated everything that happened right after Nancy “killed” her to show Nancy what the future will be like if she kills Temperance. Temperance tells Nancy that if Nancy does kill her, Temperance will curse Ace to die if Nancy ever acts on her feelings for him. Nancy is going to have to choose: a happy future with Ace and a destroyed Horseshoe Bay, or saving her town and losing the love of her life? We flash back to the present, where the Drew Crew is screaming at Nancy to finish Temperance. Nancy drops the axe and grabs Ace, telling him to run instead of killing Temperance.

Temperance completes the ritual as a tidal wave makes its way towards Horseshoe Bay. Nick sees it and screams for George. At the station, George trips the emergency siren with her handy crowbar as the town collectively runs. The wave sweeps over the town, destroying everything in its path. Nancy tells Ace she’s sorry and runs from him, causing Ace to look puzzled. Rushing back to Temperance, Nancy finishes what she started and kills her with the axe as Temperance curses Ace with her dying breath, as promised. Nancy saves Ryan this time, unlike before. The town is thrown into emergency response, but no one died. Ace can tell something is wrong with Nancy, but not wanting to trigger the curse, she chalks it up to killing Temperance.

One month later in this timeline, Nancy owns Icarus Hall. But in this timeline, George doesn’t want to be a lawyer anymore, while Bess believes the town needs her more than ever and agrees to be the new keeper. Nick is still in Horseshoe Bay because his parents want to help fix the town after the tsunami. Ace gave his notice at The Claw, confusing Nancy. She goes to find him.

Colin Bentley/The CW

At the loft, Nancy finds Ace, who is now working at the morgue with Connor. It turns out Ace thought Nancy thought he was “lacking” and that’s why she’s been avoiding him for the last month. She softly responds, “You were never lacking” as he excitedly lists his new accomplishments. He’s been doing all of this to convince her to give him a chance, believing all this time that Nancy couldn’t see her future with him. They almost kiss, but the barometer breaks, reminding Nancy of the curse. She stonily tells Ace she never loved him: “Those feeling that you have for me? I do not share them, and I never well.” Even as his heart shatters, Ace insists that something is wrong and that there’s something she’s not telling him. Nancy leaves a devastated Ace behind as she sobs in the hallway, hurting him to save his life.

Zombie

Colin Bentley/The CW

At Icarus Hall, Nancy breaks down, telling Carson she had to make a horrible choice to save her town. She says it feels the same as when her mother died, and she was powerless to stop it. Carson says that even though it ended in heartache, he never once regretted loving Kate. He says that even though he’s with Jean now, it doesn’t mean Kate wasn’t his soulmate as Nancy takes comfort in the idea that maybe there could be another soulmate out there for her. He tells her that she controls her own fate no matter what as they embrace.

Nancy finds the tarot cards, and we now finally know everyone’s role. In a montage, we see each reveal.

One of you will be the other’s demise: Nancy, killing Ryan in the first timeline and killing Temperance in both.

One of you will betray their true love: George takes Nick’s pawned engagement ring to pay for law school classes.

One of you will lose your heart: Ace loses Nancy, and we see him determined to figure out what’s really going on as he drives away in Florence.

One of you will wreak havoc on this town: Bess, the truth spell at the ball. We see her become the new keeper with Addy at her side.

One of you will forsake what is dearest to you: Nick, selling his engagement ring to make sure the Veil is sealed forever.

Only one of you will fulfill your destiny. And that one will cause the rest to fall: Ryan finds himself in the crosshairs of the couple who gave him the axe, setting up the mystery of season 4.

Nancy gets a call about a case from a mysterious voice, asking to meet in the cemetery that night. When she arrives, she trips over a broken headstone after hearing a cat meow (KEGSTAND IS BACK!) and points her flashlight around. All the bodies in the cemetery are out of their coffins as Nancy looks around the deserted cemetery in horror. It appears Horseshoe Bay is about to go full on Walking Dead as the screen fades to black.

Nancy Drew seasons 1 and 2 are available now on HBO Max, while season 3 is available to stream on The CW app. There is no word yet on a season 4 renewal. You can find our other coverage of the series here!

‘The Fall of the House of Usher’: Upcoming Mike Flanagan Netflix Adaptation Adds Willa Fitzergerald

0

Following two massive waves of casting announcements for the upcoming limited series from Mike Flanagan and Intrepid Pictures in partnership with Netflix, Willa Fitzgerald has been added to the massive ensemble for The Fall of the House of Usher.

Fitzgerald has several roles in well-known projects such as 2017’s Little Women and Blood Money, but is most known for her role as final girl Emma Duval in seasons 1 and 2 of MTV’s Scream series. Returning to the world of horror in the Flanagan-verse seems like a great fit for her. As of now her role is unconfirmed, though this is now the case for many of the confirmed ensemble members for the largest cast for an Intrepid Pictures project to date.

The limited series, inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe, receives its title from the short story of the same name originally published in 1893. While details on the series are scarce in its beginning, Netflix did announce that the series will tell its story across eight episodes. Flanagan describes the limited series as a “modern remix” of some of Poe’s most well-known stories.

Flanagan will be the writer for the fifth series under Intrepid Films for Netflix following the success of The Haunting of Hill HouseThe Haunting of Bly Manor, the recently released Midnight Mass and upcoming series The Midnight Club. In addition to writing, Flanagan will direct half of the series’ episodes with frequent collaborator Michael Fimognari directing the other half. Trevor Macy will serve as executive producer.

Flanagan also confirmed this week that production on the series would begin this week. You can follow along with our House of Usher coverage here.

‘Good Sam’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 4 “Attachments”

0

Good Sam is a brand new television show on CBS, airing Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT. The show stars Sophia Bush as Dr. Sam Griffith, Jason Isaacs as Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith, Skye P. Marshall as Dr. Lex Trulie, Michael Stahl-David as Dr. Caleb Tucker, Omar Maskati as Dr. Isan M. Shah, Davi Santos as Dr. Joey Costa, Wendy Crewson as Vivian Katz, and Edwin Hodge as Malcolm A. Kingsley.

The fourth episode, “Attachments,” aired on January 27. Let’s jump into the show and what happened in this episode.

The Donor Secret

Rhonda and Sam go through storage and look for donor records. Rhonda tells Sam to win over Griff’s biggest donor. Rhonda says that Griff has a lot of anonymous donors and she thinks something is up.

Malcolm and Sam talk about the records, and Malcolm says he can track a donor for her. Sam tells him about Helen Fletcher, who is all over Griff’s records and address book. Malcolm also finds out about Sam dating Caleb for a few years.

Sam goes to lunch and meets Helen Fletcher, and Helen says her last donation was for seven million, but she’s willing to double it to 14 million. But, she needs Sam to give up her pursuit of her father’s position. Sam tells Vivian about the meeting, and she tells her to be careful.

Sam finds paperwork from the clinical trial and Griff’s signature is all over it. Sam talks to Malcolm about Caleb, and Malcolm asks if she wants to go to the comedy show. Sam reassures Malcolm there’s nothing there between her and Caleb. Sam and Malcolm find the same clinical trial results, and that the FDA side effects were doctored by Griff, and that’s why Helen is so loyal to her father. Malcolm says the trial was over a decade ago and the drug isn’t on the market anymore, so they’d need more evidence.

Griff and Helen have a meeting at the hospital and Helen tells him about the meeting with Sam. Helen says she’s launching two new drugs soon and doesn’t want a scandal right beforehand. Griff confronts Sam about Helen and tells him about the drug trial that was altered.

Griff tells Sam to stop cold calling patients, and Griff gets a call from one that was scared. Griff says they didn’t want to violate their agreement, and that Griff silenced some of the patients. He tells Sam to leave it alone.

Sam calls Helen and they meet up again. Sam says she’ll agree to accept the donation, but that she’s not stepping down and that Helen is going to back her, instead of her father. Sam says Helen’s drug trial wasn’t tied up as well as Griff thinks it was. Sam says she’ll keep things under wraps as long as the donation comes in. Helen says she’ll have the money wired over first thing.

Griff and Vivian still have something to hide, but it’s not revealed what it is.

Sam finds Rhonda in her office, and Sam said she knew her help came with a price. Rhonda says it’s not her father they need to talk about, it’s her mother.

Reattachment Surgery

A victim from a vehicle crash arrives whose arm was amputated. She mentions they need to look for her friend Beth. The team talks about helping Dr. Glass with reattachment surgery. Rhonda arrives in the room, stating the arm was found, and so was the friend, Beth. However, she was killed instantly.

The patient asks about Beth and is told she did not survive. The team leaves as Lex comforts her. Isan and Joey talk about Isan’s malpractice suit and Isan looks up lawyers for it. Joey’s focused on the reattachment surgery. Isan tries to be more sympathetic towards the patient and tries to tell Joey to do the same.

The team scrubs in and preps for surgery. Rhonda chooses Lex to help, not Joey, and Joey is upset about it. Griff gives Lex a pep talk before she goes in. The surgery is successful and the arm is reattached. Lex and Rhonda are with the patient when she wakes up, and the patient is able to wiggle her fingers, meaning it was a total and complete success.

After, Lex and Griff have a conversation and Lex tells him she misses him, and she’s glad he’s not dead.

Joey complains to his boyfriend, a paramedic, about losing out on the surgery. Joey apologizes to the team and builds them a lounge in the back of an ambulance. Isan gets a message that the internal report is finished and he is not at fault for negligence.

Ramona Diaconescu/CBS

Case of the Week

A man, Noah, is having a hard time breathing and has previously been diagnosed with congestive heart failure. His brother is with him, angry that he still works on the family farm. The patient says he’s been in the hospital six times in the last six months for the same issue.

They get an alarm and they have to take the fluids out of Noah’s lungs manually. However, they’re waiting for tests to come back to determine what course to next take. Sam asks Caleb if they’ve gotten the labs back, and Bernie says that there would be a rush on it if they went to a comedy show tonight, and Malcolm is there saying they have dinner plans. There’s some very awkward tension between Caleb and Malcolm.

Caleb and Sam go to the lab, and Bernie says the labs were never run. Caleb checks and the labs were denied. Apparently, Noah does not have health insurance, but Sam and Caleb appeal to the financial review board.

Caleb gets the results back and tells Sam that it’s syphilis. Sam gets an alarm that Noah is getting worse. Now they come back and say it was a false positive for syphilis, so Caleb and Sam go back to the drawing board.

Caleb walks in after Sam’s fight with Griff and sees Sam upset. He tells Sam to come with him, so the two get into separate ice baths in order to help with the stress.

Caleb tells her that he’s still crazy about her and Sam says it feels like another life. They both agree they don’t want to go back, but Caleb says he wants a new thing, a 2.0. Sam says she’s sorry and goes to leave. As Sam gets out, she says that her legs are numb from the cold and a lightbulb goes off in her head about Noah.

Caleb and Sam talk to Noah, and they tell him he has an autoimmune disease but it’s treatable. Sam tells Noah and his brother that if the treatment works well, he can do whatever he pleases.

Sam tells Malcolm that there is something there about Caleb. She kisses Malcolm and tells him that she’s in this with Malcolm.

Good Sam airs on CBS on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Stay tuned for our continued coverage on the series, including episodic recaps and more!

SUNDANCE AND BEYOND: The Best Horror Films of Sundance 2022

0

Sundance 2022 is drawing to a close which means it’s time to break down the best of this year’s films. Thrills, chills, and kills dominated this year’s festival, which means I had too many excellent features to choose from, so I made my own categories! Each of these films deserves praise – and if you’re brave enough, make sure to watch them when they release on streaming or in a theater near you.

Siiri Solalinna appears in Hatching by Hanna Bergholm, an official selection of the Midnight section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by IFC Midnight.

Best Creature: Hatching

My favorite film over all the genres this year was definitely Finnish director Hanna Bergholm’s Hatching. A satirical commentary on puberty, girlhood, and the pressures placed on girls by their family and by society, Hatching tells the story of Tinja – a young girl struggling to live up to her mother’s (a popular mommy blogger) strict expectations. One day Tinja finds an egg in the forest and nurtures it until it hatches. The creature that emerges becomes a mirror of her darker, more turbulent emotions and wish-fulfillment. The humor is dark and twisted. The production design is pink, frilly, and hyper-feminine. But most importantly, Alli, the half-bird half-girl that Tinja hatches, is incredible. Horrifying and yet fragile, the design and special effects makeup create a monster that is both repellent and yet easy to love.

Rebecca Hall appears in Resurrection by Andrew Semans, an official selection of the Premieres section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Wyatt Garfield.

Best Performance: Resurrection

This Cronenbergian psychological horror film is surreal, nerve-wracking, and deeply disturbing. Rebecca Hall stars as Margaret: a successful single mom who leads a seemingly ordered, predictable life. However, when her ex David (Tim Roth) comes back into her life her mental health begins to unravel. Margaret becomes increasingly paranoid, and we learn about David’s abusive, cult-like control of her when she was a young woman, and what she is willing to do to get out of this returning nightmare. Hall’s performance as Margaret is extraordinary. Her transition from strong, powerful “boss queen” into a nervous, paranoid wreck who can no longer trust her own mind – or her own ears, is masterful. Especially in the stomach-churning finale where you see her conquer her fears but also lose her grip on reality entirely. Rebecca Hall gives a performance for the ages.

Laura Galán appears in PIGGY by Carlota Pereda, an official selection of the Midnight section at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Jorge Fuembuena.

Most Horrific: PIGGY

Part coming of age story, part homage to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, PIGGY (by Spanish writer/director Carlota Pereda) provides a harrowing look at fatphobia, small-town dynamics, and the cruelty of teenage bullying. Sara, a teenage girl who hides in her parents butcher shop to avoid her peers who relentlessly torture her because of her size, becomes the reluctant witness of a brutal kidnapping. Torn between doing the right thing and protecting the man that saved her from her torturers, Sara becomes entrenched in an ever-increasing bloodbath. Pereda provides an unflinching and brutal look at normalized social violence. The scenes with Sara’s bullies are more horrific and hard to stomach than the bloody carnage of the finale. Laura Galán is terrific as Sara – able to wear Sara’s complex inner journey (from helplessness and fear into rage and then to justice) on her sleeve. The most harrowing film of the festival by far.

Best Monster: Fresh

Dating is hell in this fun horror/thriller from director Mimi Cave and writer Lauryn Kahn. When Noa, a young woman fed up with dating apps, takes a chance on a real-life meeting when she agrees to go on a date with Steve (Sebastian Stan), a handsome plastic surgeon that she meets while grocery shopping. Sparks fly on their first date and she agrees to join him on a weekend getaway, only to find that Steve has been harboring some dark secrets and unusual tastes. A sharp satire and commentary on the modern dating scene, the commodification of women’s bodies, and the ways that we become consumed (literally) by our romantic relationships, Fresh is witty, gory, and cathartic. But no one is having more fun in Fresh than Sebastian Stan as the monstrous (and monstrously charming) Steve. He delivers a delicious, scenery-chewing performance reminiscent of Christian Bale’s Patrick Bateman. He might look like an angel on the outside, but inside he is all monster. You also won’t have to wait long for Fresh to hit your screens, it’s coming to HULU on March 4.
