Pride Month Character Spotlight: Darryl Whitefeather

0
Pete Gardner as Darryl Whitefeather

Welcome to the twenty-sixth article in our Pride series for the month of June! Each day we will be highlighting a different LGBTQ+ character who we think is a great example of representation, dynamic characterization, and overall badassery. Check out the rest of the series here.

He’s gettin’ bi.

As one of the few bisexual male characters on television, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Darryl Whitefeather (Pete Gardner) is paving the way for positive bisexual representation in media.

Darryl comes into the series as the title character Rebecca Bunch’s (show co-creator Rachel Bloom) new boss at a law firm in West Covina, California. A proud 1/8 Chippewa, Darryl immediately steals your heart as a goofy, endlessly loyal, earnest figure who wants to do right by his friends, employees and people in general.

From the beginnings of his exploration into his sexual identity to his pink, purple and blue-colored Huey Lewis-esque coming out song, Darryl’s journey towards accepting his bisexuality was fun, awkward, confusing, and enlightening–much like in real life.

At the beginning of the series, Darryl is undergoing a divorce from his wife and trying his best to be a loving father to his daughter Madison. He starts to discover another side to his sexuality as he hangs around Rebecca’s male friends, especially Josh Wilson, aka White Josh (David Hull).

What I appreciated most about Darryl’s coming out storyline was that it was gradual, taking quite a few episodes for him to come to the realization that he is bisexual, culminating in one of my favorite songs in the entire series:

The song works to dispel many of the misconceptions of bisexuality (that bisexual people are “confused” or “indecisive,” or that they are a “player or a slut”). He acknowledges these in the song, working to reaffirm that bisexuality is a valid sexual orientation and is not a “phase”. The song is also very much in keeping with Darryl’s character, so instead of coming off as hokey or overdone, it’s instead sincere and a bit goofy (like many of the songs in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) as that is who Darryl is.

While to the characters the song seems to come out of nowhere, the audience recognizes that the song comes from gradual and well-done character development. Even though his realization is put in a staged musical number, the fact that the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend writers took the time to write Darryl exploring this side of himself rather than making it some sort of sudden epiphany shows an understanding of how a person might come to terms with their sexuality. Everyone does it differently, but it’s refreshing to actually see that played out on screen.

White Josh (David Hull) and Darryl Whitefeather (Pete Gardner)

Another important aspect of his character is that Darryl, like Raymond Holt in Brooklyn 99, is shown in a loving and normalized relationship with another man, White Josh, for much of the series. Despite Darryl’s initial interest in WhiJo as his “fitspiration,” the two men are, for the most part, shown as equal partners in the relationship, and other than some early miscommunication as Darryl was discovering his sexuality and some jealousy, there’s no sense of one man not being good enough for the other. They are balanced and both bring something to the table. Both are earnest, open and honest in their pursuit of each other, and neither feels like they have to change themselves drastically for the other to love and accept them (something that some straight couples in media seem to struggle with).

It is also important that Darryl’s daughter Madison and WhiJo have a relatively good relationship in the series, and that Madison has all but accepted her father’s new relationship, regardless of WhiJo’s gender identity. Through WhiJo and Darryl, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend addresses and effectively dismantles the misconceptions and arguments against gay couples raising children. Madison doesn’t care what gender WhiJo is as long as he’s good to her father and her father is happy.

Darryl’s bisexuality doesn’t take over his personality. He is still the same lovable Darryl he is at the beginning of the series, but he is a little more secure in himself and happier. His relationship with WhiJo is a major part of his story, but it’s not his entire story and none of his friends and colleagues treats him any different for it.

In short, bisexuality is an identity that often gets the short end of the stick in media. Rather than taking the time to show a character on a journey, it is usually handled in a slapstick fashion, slamming labels onto poorly-written characters whose journey of self discovery can be summed up in a fifteen-second recap.

LGBTQ+ representation, when done well, is about normalizing the presence of such characters in media particularly because LGBTQ+ people are present in everyday life. Darryl Whitefeather’s bisexuality is another part of who he is, a goofy boss, a loving dad, an earnest friend, and an excellent addition to an ever growing roster of well-written LGBTQ+ characters in media.

Review: Beaches and Cream Restaurant at Walt Disney World

0

If you’re looking for a spot to enjoy some melt-in-your-mouth, hand-dipped ice cream or some classic cheeseburgers, Beaches and Cream at Walt Disney World is the place to be! You can enjoy this restaurant featured at Walt Disney World’s Beach Club Resort. Here is my review:

Atmosphere:

This place gave off the 50’s-60’s vibe. It had a jukebox when you walked in, music to pick at your table from that era and bar stools to sit at the counter to be up close in all the action. Although the seating was tight with only 3 booths and 6 tables, it was worth it! If you’re interested, book your reservation early, as this very popular restaurant is nearly impossible to get into. This location is conveniently located near one of the best pools on Walt Disney World property and if you’re visiting on a hot, steamy summer day, you can enjoy some to-go ice cream to cool you down. Not only that, but there is orange flashing lights for someone’s very special birthday and with anyone willing to tackle the huge ”Kitchen Sink.”

Service:

I really enjoyed the service there as I do all Disney restaurants. They are always nice and friendly and the waiters/waitresses were dressed according to the theme.

Now onto everyone’s favorite part, the food!

Food:

“The Kitchen Sink”

This masterpiece has a variety of ice cream including, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, mint, strawberry, served in an actual Kitchen Sink! It can serve 6-8 people and has every topping you can think of including brownies, Oreos, peanut butter, gummy candies, banana, and an entire can of whip cream just to name a few (actually 32 toppings to choose from). When waiters would bring it out, it looked like too much for me to tackle but many people were up to the challenge!

“Snickers Sundae”

This scrumptious ice cream dessert includes snickers, scoops of vanilla ice cream, cherry, hot fudge, marshmallows, whipped cream and peanuts. It is big enough to feed two so don’t feel bad if you can’t finish it! I was proud of myself for even making a dent in this huge glass of deliciousness. If you love snickers, this will be a dream come true!

“Cheese and Bacon Fries”

This bowl of bacon, cheese, creamy ranch, and perfect French fries will be just the thing you crave when you eat at Beaches and Cream. It’s unique ranch on top was amazing! It definitely reminds me of a loaded baked potato! I loved it because it was different than what I’ve had before and it was the perfect size for one person. I can’t say there was anything I didn’t like about it!

Make sure you check out this restaurant for all it’s Disney Magic! This is one of my new favorite places to be and the best for all the summertime madness. I give this location 2 Mickey thumbs up! Don’t miss out!

Pride Month Character Spotlight: Clarke Griffin

0

Welcome to the twenty fifth article in our Pride series for the month of June! Each day we will be highlighting a different LGBTQ+ character who we think is a great example of representation, dynamic characterization, and overall badassery. Check out the rest of the series here.

Clarke Griffin does not have much time for romance, let alone queer romance.

As the leader of a hundred criminally charged minors who were flown down to Earth from a space station to see if it was liveable after a nuclear apocalypse 97 years ago (aka the premise of The 100) Clarke has a lot to worry about, particularly in the first season. Dropped on the planet with little to no supplies, they fight to survive while everything from the environment to survivors on the ground (or Grounders) try to kill them.
Clarke is the daughter of the Chief Medical Officer and a member of the governing Council on the Ark, the space station where the (believed to be) last surviving humans are living. As the daughter of a leader, she naturally takes a leadership role and helps to keep as many of the teens alive as possible. But these teens are not inclined to listen to her and therefore her job is tough. She does not take very much time for herself, although in the first two seasons she develops a relationship with fellow “hundred” member Finn Collins. But their relationship is cut short when his Ark-girlfriend, Raven Reyes, comes down to Earth shortly after. Talk about awkward. Throughout the next two seasons, Clarke continues to grow as a leader as she faces more challenges, but also grows as a person. Much of this growth comes from her best friend Bellamy as well as leader of the Grounders and future love interest, Lexa.

Introduced halfway through season 2, Lexa is the “Heda,” or Commander of the 12 Grounder clans. Though she is young, she won the bloody Conclave ritual when the last Commander died and therefore was given the throne and control of the army. Lexa and Clarke work together in season 2 to fight the “Mountain Men,” a group living in a bunker performing experiments and killing grounders for their radiation-protected blood. Even after betrayal, the two refuse to allow their groups to devolve into war – and a lot of that has to do with their attraction to each other.

Lexa initiates it, and divulged to Clarke earlier that there was a member of her Conclave named Costia whom Lexa had a relationship with. Sadly, she was killed by an enemy clan to learn secrets about Lexa. Towards the climax of the second season, Lexa kisses Clarke, but stakes are so high that she does not return the affection. It is not until the middle of the third season that they finally get together. But when they do, it is beautiful. Lexa finally lets her hair down, Clarke lets her guard down, and they are able to have a night filled with love and light.

Frustratingly, Lexa meets a similar fate to Tara’s on Buffy the Vampire Slayer fourteen years prior. Shortly after their night of bliss, a government official attempts to shoot and kill Clarke, but shoots Lexa instead. Lexa dies in Clarke’s arms, and not only do the 12 clans lose their leader, but Clarke loses her love. Another member on the list of gays buried on TV, Lexa did not deserve this fate. Killing off LGBTQ+ representation for the sake of plot is unnecessary and poor writing.

Clarke’s romantic fate has yet to be sealed since then. She has had the occasional hookup with a woman named Nyla, but the ever-growing list of life-threatening situations and still being in love with Lexa have kept her from moving on. Perhaps if the world can stop ending for five minutes, Clarke may find different, but still great, true love.

Pride Month Character Spotlight: Nicole Haught

0

Welcome to the twenty fourth article in our Pride series for the month of June! Each day we will be highlighting a different LGBTQ+ character who we think is a great example of representation, dynamic characterization, and overall badassery. Check out the rest of the series here.

There was never any question about who Officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell) was or who she wanted.

From the moment she walked into Shorty’s Bar in the second episode of season one of Wynonna Earp, it was clear that what Nicole wanted was Waverly Earp. As for who she was- we soon learned from just a brief (yet steamy) interaction between the two characters, that Wynonna Earp had introduced its first LGBTQ character into the series.

Nicole Haught made it obvious from the beginning that she was interested in Waverly, and she gave Waverly time and space to work through her feelings and the relationship she was currently in. And in the end, the show delivered not one, but now two, fully aware LGBTQ characters. While we saw Waverly’s journey with discovering her own sexuality and the two slowly falling for one another, their storyline wasn’t angsty, or filled with any of the tired tropes we see. We just saw two characters, naturally falling in love with one another despite demons and curses.

Wynonna Earp provided representation early on with Nicole, an important character and part of the team. She has always been able to hold her own and be central to the story without being solely defined by her sexuality. While Nicole may be a lesbian (not in fact a unicorn), she is so, so much more than that, and she was never defined by being Waverly’s love interest. Nicole has gone through much growth, and had many developing relationships with other characters other than the younger Earp sister.

Nicole is the kind of representation that is needed and her character is another testament to the creators, show runners and writers of this show.

Briana Buckmaster’s album “Begin” available for preorder on Amazon, iTunes

Album cover via Amazon

Briana Buckmaster has her debut album coming out on Friday, July 13, and you can now pre-order and preview Begin on Amazon and iTunes.

Buckmaster, best known for her recurring role of Sheriff Donna Hanscum on Supernatural, began recording her album in July 2017 with fellow musician Jason Manns producing, and now you can listen to a sample of her hard work and pre-order the album online.

A track list has also been released for Begin, and it includes covers of several well-known songs, including “Gunpowder and Lead” by Miranda Lambert and “How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston.

For fans of Louden Swain, it also has a cover of their wildly popular song “Wave” from the Eskimo album. Buckmaster recorded with members of Louden Swain, and though it isn’t 100% confirmed, it certainly sounds like lead singer Rob Benedict is singing along with her during the chorus in the preview.

Thirty-second samples of eight songs are included in the preview, and hearing them is more than enough to make it crystal clear that this album is going to be a huge hit. Buckmaster’s voice somehow manages to be smooth and sultry and rough and gritty at all the right moments, and the combination already has us asking for more.

Pre-order the album on either Amazon or iTunes so you can hear the full versions as soon as Begin drops on July 13.

You can pre-order on Amazon below:
