10 Years of Castiel on ‘Supernatural’ – Season 12’s Biggest Moments

0

We’re almost at the end of our celebration of 10 years of our favorite angel, Castiel. Sam and Dean don’t know what they would do without him, and neither do we. If you’ve missed any of our other parts to the series, we posted an article a day featuring one season Castiel was a part of, so make sure to check them out!

Photo: Katie Yu/The CW

Season 12 starts off with a bang, Dean is back from the supposed dead, and Mary is back from the actual dead, but for Castiel, it starts off with many regrets. He made the call near the end of last season to allow himself to be possessed by Lucifer, and at the beginning of this season, we see the continuation of Castiel trying to deal with the guilt associated with making the worst choice for the best reasons. Though that situation has been one he’s found himself in often, this season starts the trend of Castiel beginning to feel less shame, and more pride in the choices that he makes to save the family that he loves.

Season 12, Episode 9 – “First Blood”

Castiel had taken a quite an emotional beating this episode. Sam and Dean were arrested in the wake of their attempt to trap Lucifer (in the body of the current US President) and had been gone for months, with no leads as to where they were being held. Mary wasn’t exactly kind in her criticism of the way Castiel had handled the situation, automatically blaming him for her sons’ disappearance. (Though she eventually recends.) We see Castiel pushed to his limits, even stooping to ask Crowley for help. In their absence, he tries to work a case, but fails pretty spectacularly. Sitting at a bar with Mary, he quietly admits to her that he simply cannot do what the brothers do. When he finally gets them back, he stops at nothing to ensure that the world will not have to live without its protectors any longer. When Billie comes back to collect on the Winchesters (albeit totally bogus) deal that one of them needs to die, it’s Castiel that takes the lead and does what he does best – protect the protectors – by stabbing Billie in the back. The terrible consequences of his actions won’t be seen until the end of the season.

For all of his self-sacrificing nature, this episode is first in many this season where we finally start to see Castiel realize his worth in this great big cosmic fight. Self deprecation is a hallmark of Castiel’s character, and quite frankly his self esteem has been in the toilet since he let himself get possessed by Lucifer in Season 11. While much of this episode sees Castiel admitting plainly what he cannot do (like solve a case where dozens were murdered that was ultimately fixed by Mary, or use any of his contacts to track down the location of Sam and Dean), he’s also really clear about what he can do – use his agency to protect the Winchesters. Season after season, Castiel has consecutively been the ace in the Winchesters’ pocket, so to speak. While they save the world, Castiel saves them. Often times, and especially this time, to his own detriment. The decision to kill Billie to get Sam and Dean out of their deadly bargain was one Castiel makes as much for his brothers as he does for the good of humanity.

Season 12, Episode 10 – “Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets”

Coming off of the events of the last episode, tensions are still running high with Team Free Will. Castiel and Dean aren’t speaking much at all, until a friend of Castiel’s, Benjamin, sends out a distress signal over angel radio. Sam and Dean come along with Castiel to meet with Ishim and Marabel, who are pretty hostile to him about losing one of their own. Turns out they’re being hunted by a woman named Lily Sunder, who is hell bent on revenge. Castiel, along with Marabel, Ishim and Benjamin had been sent many years earlier to kill the child of Lily, who Ishim tells them is a nephilim (half human, half angel). Castiel, envessled in a woman, reads the angel who is supposedly the father his rights, and then doesn’t even flinch as he is killed. She does cringe, however, when she hears the screams of Lily and her child.

We haven’t seen much of Castiel’s past. For an angel who was around at the beginning of everything, we know precious little about what Castiel’s life was like pre-Winchester. This episode showed us a side of Castiel we hadn’t seen before; namely, his feminine side. Castiel explained to Dean and Sam that angels are basically sexless, the vessel can be male or female, but angels are angels. But more than that little mythology tidbit, this episode reminds us of how far Castiel has come. Before the Winchesters, Castiel was a soldier’s soldier. Ishim reminds him of this as he runs through his laundry list of military accomplishments. But Castiel is quick to clarify that while some angels may have considered him a prime example, he feels, “My friendship with Sam and Dean has made me stronger.”

He’s fallen in love with humanity, and although his old angel friends see that to his detriment, Castiel views this as an evolution of his character. He later goes on to give Lily the option of finding him later, should she find that she cannot forgive him. His humility to humans is a complete change from the angel he used to be, and it’s nice to seem him embracing it.

Season 12, Episode 12 – “Stuck in the Middle (With You)”

Unbeknownst to Sam, Dean, and Cas, Mary leads Team Free Will unknowingly into a trap to steal the Colt from Ramiel, a Prince of Hell. In the process, Castiel is stabbed by the Lance of Michael, which basically makes an angel rot slowly from the inside out. Dragged to a barn by Mary, Castiel lies dying, black veins spreading through his skin and blood gushing onto the old couch. Even in his last moments, Castiel begs the Winchesters to leave him there and save themselves.

Sam, Dean and Mary will not be moved, however, as they look on at Castiel with sorrow.

“You’re family,” Dean says simply. “And we don’t leave family behind.”

No one, and I mean no one, says “I love you” on this show. Is it implied? Sure. Sam, Dean, and Cas fall over one another season after season to sacrifice themselves for the safety of the other two. But an actual confession of love in Supernatural? That’s more rare than any of the three of them dying.

Castiel has had a full arc of humility, culminating in this confession. The concept of love is not one that an angel should experience, at least not for any part of humanity. The Castiel that we met at the beginning of Season 4 certainly didn’t feel love for any one. But now here he is, having spent the last eight years fighting alongside the Winchesters, and he’s learned what it is to love and have true family. Castiel is not emotionally stunted in what he thinks are his last moments; he’s making sure that the family who taught him how to love knows exactly how he feels about them. That my friends, is some serious character development.

Season 12, Episode 19 – “The Future”

In their pursuit of tracking down Kelly to get rid of their little nephilim problem, Castiel returns to the bunker with one goal in mind: to take the only thing that could solve their issue. Castiel decides to steal the Colt from the Winchesters. Elsewhere, under the imprisonment of Dagon, Kelly makes an attempt at her own life… but miraculously lives. She’s then convinced that her unborn baby has saved her. When Castiel does finally find her, he finds that he can’t kill her as he’d planned, and instead takes Kelly as far from Dagon as possible. Their truck breaks down, they talk about God’s grand plan (or not so grand), and Kelly lets Castiel feel her baby kick. And suddenly to her, it all makes sense. Castiel is the one meant to take care of her baby. Though Sam and Dean try to stop them, Kelly steals the Impala with Castiel in the back seat and drives them to the gates of Heaven where they’re met by Dagon. But before Dagon can kill them, Kelly reaches out for Castiel, and his eyes light up – not blue this time, but yellow. Unseen to the viewers, Castiel has a vision of the future, and it changes everything. Suddenly, he has total faith that this child must be born.

Continuing with this season’s theme of Castiel “protecting the protectors”, in this episode he stole the Colt not to betray his brothers – but to save them the atrocity of having to kill Kelly, an innocent, themselves. Early in the episode he’d insisted that he wanted to bring back a “win” for Dean after all of his self-described “failures”, and this is just the latest in that pursuit. As much as we, as viewers, may see this is as the wrong call to make, in terms of character development, this is a big step for what I like to call “Decisive Castiel”. For better or worse, he’s making decisions and not backing down.

This only continues as the episode progresses once he receives the vision of the future. Though we’re left to ponder what it is that he could possibly have seen (and we’ve all got our theories) what Castiel comes away with is an intense sense of faith. It creates in him a sense of purpose we’ve seldom seen on Castiel and it looks incredible. Gone are the worry lines from his face, replaced with a calm certainty.

Season 12, Episode 23 – “All Along the Watchtower”

Hiding from the Winchesters, Castiel has taken Kelly deep into the woods to help her have her baby. Kelly is shown praying to God for guidance before it’s revealed that she’s actually just trying to put together a crib. She’s upset over all of the moments of her baby’s life she will miss. Castiel tries to tell her he understands at first, but then clarifies he really doesn’t have any idea how she feels. But he can promise that with every ounce of his being, he will raise her son to be the kind of person she would be proud of.

Later in the episode, we see Castiel returning from the store with more diapers than a baby can possibly need.

He also took an online doula class to make sure he was prepared to help Kelly through the birth, advising her on how far apart her “shock waves” should be.

Could there be anything cuter than Dadstiel? Though we briefly saw his more paternal side in Season 9, Castiel hasn’t really had the opportunity to nurture anything. He protects Sam and Dean, but they don’t need him in the way this child will. With the prospect of being charged with raising a being from birth, Castiel flourishes. It’s almost as if he’s had no higher calling. He’s as giddy as we’ve ever seen him, filled to the brim with faith that Jack, this child he will be able to influence and raise, will bring about a better world. This moment is so significant for Castiel because it’s been many years since we’ve seen him so faithful. Before, he was filled with the faith instilled in him from Heaven, that there was a plan in place for the world, all according to Heaven’s laws. Now he has a different sort of faith, one that will include an end to suffering for all of humanity. And while that has incredible significance for him, in the end, it’s just heartening to see Castiel get to explore his nurturing side. He’s the sort of person who wants to take care of others, and now he gets that chance.

This season saw significant change in Castiel. He started broken down, beaten, and desperate for a win. By the end, he’s charged with a higher purpose, not from Heaven, but for the sake of humanity. He’s also begun to trust himself a lot more, a trend that continues into the next season. Stay tuned for tomorrow, where we’ll explore a newly resurrected Castiel, and how a little death gave him the greatest season yet!

10 Years of Castiel on ‘Supernatural’ – Season 11’s Biggest Moments

0

It’s hard to believe we’re nearing the end of our series celebrating ten years of Castiel on Supernatural. If you’re just catching up, you can look at the other seasons and what we thought some of Castiel’s biggest moments were in each one here.

Season 11 was an explosive season for Supernatural. We started right after the Mark of Cain was removed from Dean Winchester’s arm which freed the Darkness and led Castiel and the Winchesters into another world-ending apocalypse situation. The Darkness would push bonds to the breaking point and test what family really mean to Dean, Castiel and Sam. How far would you go for the people you cared about the most? This was a big underlying theme in this season, and we saw Castiel push himself to save Dean and his Winchester family.

Season 11, Episode 4 – “Baby”

Castiel was off scene for this episode, however it was very telling that the writers wanted to make sure he was included in an episode about the Winchesters and what they cared about. Dean finds himself being attacked by a new type of monster and calls Castiel, who is back at the bunker recovering, to see if he knows what kind of creature it is. Dean is calling it a Were-pire and trying to get Castiel to say it as well. Castiel tells Dean that it is actually a Nachzehrer, but when Dean repeatedly asks him to call it a Were-pire, Castiel gives in with what sounds like a smile on his face. Having Dean talk to Castiel about this while he is in Baby, helps to solidify that Castiel is indeed part of the Winchester family, and is seen as such by Dean Winchester.

This moment really sets the tone for the whole season for Castiel. He considers the Winchesters to be his family, and he cares a great deal about them. He will go to whatever lengths necessary to keep them safe and happy in whatever way he can.

Season 11, Episode 10 – “The Devil In The Details”

Castiel and Dean go to help Sam and are instead transported into the Cage with him and Lucifer. Castiel charges Lucifer and fights him to keep him busy until Rowena can say the spell to retrap Lucifer in the Cage. Lucifer tells Castiel that he himself can stop Amara, that he’s the only one who can, but Castiel does not believe him and continues the fight. Lucifer gets Dean against the bars and Castiel attacks him again. Rowena finally completes the spell and they are all let out of the Cage. Castiel stays behind after Sam and Dean leave and go back down to where Rowena and Crowley are in Hell. When he gets back downstairs, we see in a flashback that when Lucifer had him pinned in the cage, Castiel asked him if he could really beat the Darkness and Lucifer said yes. After hearing that, Castiel said yes and let Lucifer into his vessel, therefore letting him out of the cage to defeat the Darkness. Casifer, Lucifer in Castiel’s vessel, tells Rowena and Crowley that he is Lucifer and then proceeds to kill Rowena when she admits she’s the only one who can open the Cage again.

This sacrifice is a continuation of Castiel feeling like he needs to keep the Winchesters safe and helping them in any way that he can. He doesn’t want either brother to sacrifice themselves to Lucifer, but understands that at that moment, Lucifer may be the only one who can help destroy the Darkness, Amara. Feeling like this was his only option, Castiel takes it, once again saving Dean and Sam from pain and torture.

Season 11, Episode 14 – “The Vessel”

Castiel is putting together the ingredients for a Spell of Gathering to try to get Dean back from trip back in time when Sam walks in. Sam worries about Castiel not having enough power to complete the spell and so he offers to let Castiel take some of the power of his soul, like Castiel had done to Bobby in the past. Sam tells Castiel that he trusts him, and then Castiel (as Lucifer) laughs in Sam’s face.

He then reveals to Sam that he is actually Lucifer and tells him that he is going to use his soul, and when Sam dies, Casifer will tell Dean that Sam offered and knew the risks. Casifer then reaches into Sam’s chest and starts tapping into his soul while Sam yells in pain. Lucifer’s hand is abruptly pulled out of Sam’s chest and we see his face start to twitch a little bit before he says, “Hello Castiel”. Castiel is back in control now and tells Sam that he can’t eject Lucifer, it is taking all his strength to keep Lucifer from killing Sam. Sam says that they don’t need Lucifer to get Amara and Castiel says it’s not for Amara, it’s to save Dean because Castiel cannot time travel. Casifer rescues Dean and as soon as they return, Sam tells Dean that Castiel is Lucifer. Lucifer smiles and sends Dean flying across the room.

This was an especially important scene, because it was the first time we see Castiel able to override Lucifer’s control. Lucifer threatened the life of Sam Winchester, one of the people he cares about and has sworn to protect. That determination allowed him to gain the upper hand and spare Sam’s life. Castiel has once again saved his family.

Season 11, Episode 18 – “Hell’s Angel”

Lucifer appears, still in Castiel’s vessel, when summoned by Dean. He is trapped in a circle of Holy Fire and notices the Horn of Gabriel off to the side. Lucifer tells Dean that his power combined with the Horn should be enough to take Amara out. Dean activates another sigil and calls out for Castiel to show himself. We see Lucifer twitch and then Castiel takes control; however it is for a very brief period and then Lucifer is back in the driver’s seat. Dean tries calling out to Castiel, to have him expel Lucifer, but Lucifer is very firmly back in control; he even mocks Dean at one point as Dean calls out to Cas.

Lucifer demands that the weapon be handed over immediately, or he would take it himself once the warding failed. Crowley panics and enters Castiel’s vessel as well so Castiel is now hosting Lucifer, Crowley, and himself. Crowley finds Castiel watching TV in the Winchesters’ kitchen and tries to convince him that he needs to expel Lucifer before it’s too late. Castiel seems uninterested in what is going on, deciding to continue watching TV while Crowley and Lucifer fight it out in the background. The warding fails and the Holy Fire goes out, letting Lucifer free again. Lucifer takes the Horn and decides that he’s going to kill the Winchesters because he doesn’t need them anymore; however, this is when Amara shows up. Lucifer decides to use the Horn on her instead, to no avail. Amara then tells him that they need to chat and she and Lucifer disappear.

This moment is important because it shows us just how deep Castiel is under Lucifer’s control at this point. Lucifer has told Castiel that it’s best for everyone if he just takes a backseat while Lucifer fights Amara. Castiel heard Dean calling to him and mentions it to Crowley when he visits, but he shows no impetus to try to expel Lucifer. Castiel chooses to sit there and watch TV because Lucifer has convinced him that he is not important to the upcoming battle. Because that is a fear that Castiel has struggled with since his early days, it is not something that he can easily shake off.

Season 11, Episode 21 – “We Happy Few”

Casifer goes to Heaven to try to talk to the angels into helping defeat the Darkness with Chuck and the Winchesters. However, the angels are decidedly less than pleased to see Lucifer back again. When he realizes that he is not going to get anywhere with the angels, Lucifer calls Castiel up to the front to allow him to speak. At first, the angels tell Castiel that he is just as bad as Lucifer, and they don’t want to work with him either. Castiel tells them that they will hear it from God Himself in good time, but needs to  know if he has their support. Castiel is told that the angels find him foul for letting Lucifer into his vessel. Castiel then tries to explain by telling them of the torment that Lucifer put him through, how his vessel is burning up trying to contain both of them, but he would still do it again because God and Lucifer can win this battle using his vessel. Castiel states that it is his role to play in this. The angels finally listen to that and decide to join the fight.

Here we see Castiel putting everyone else’s safety above his own. He is willing to put himself in danger in order to make sure that the Winchesters and humanity survive the upcoming battle. Castiel does everything in his power and gives everything of himself to ensure that the others will not fail. Thanks to Lucifer’s possession, Castiel sees himself as nothing more than a tool, a disposable unit. Where Castiel is concerned, as long as the Winchesters and humanity survive this battle, Castiel’s purpose has been served.

Season 11 was a really powerful season for Castiel. He gave up his vessel to save the Winchesters, and then was willing to give up everything to save the world. Castiel battled with Lucifer to keep Sam and Dean alive, even though Lucifer was more powerful than he was.

Stay tuned for Season 12 moments tomorrow to see how Castiel comes back from being possessed by Lucifer.

Elizabeth Tulloch Joins the Arrowverse as Lois Lane

Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch has been cast as the iconic Lois Lane in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover. She will be joining Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) as they head to National City. Still no word on what brings them there or what their relationship might be. In previous incarnations, Lois and Clark/Superman have always been love interests. It will be interesting to see if they keep that canon.

Fans of Grimm will recognize Tulloch as Juliette Silverton/Eve. She’s also had roles in many television dramas including House, The West Wing, and Cold Case. Movie roles are on her resume, too. Five Football Films Worth Watching

0

September is here and with it comes fall, the season of cooler weather, pumpkin spiced everything and football, football, football. It is nearly impossible to avoid seeing references to the sport. Thanks to its popularity, several films have been made over the years revolving around the sport. The beauty of these films is that most do not require any knowledge of the sport itself. Here are five films even the most casual football observer should watch.

Remember the Titans

Release Date: September 29, 2000

One of the most popular football movies to come out of the 21st century so far is Remember the Titans, starring Denzel Washington and Will Patton. Based on a true story, Washington plays Coach Herman Boone, an African-American coach who takes the job of head football coach at a newly integrated school, much to the chagrin of the current players. Patton plays Coach Bill Yost. At first, Yost is dismayed at being relegated to Boone’s assistant. In the end, however, he proudly stands side by side as they lead their team to victory. What makes this such a great film is the growth we see in so many characters. Specifically, the friendship between Julius Campbell (Wood Harris) and Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) that begins as hatred and grows into brotherhood. Remember the Titans is a classic. Just keep a tissue handy for the ending.

Radio

Release Date: October 24, 2003

Radio is another film based on a true story. It tells the story of a mentally challenged man, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., befriended by the local high school coach, played by Ed Harris. In the beginning, James Robert “Radio” Kennedy keeps mostly to himself. He is contented pushing his shopping cart and listening to the music coming from his radio. When he is harassed by the local high school football team, Coach Harold Jones (Harris) makes it his mission to make things right between Radio and the team. Initially resented by the star player, Radio becomes an integral part of the team.  Coach Jones finds himself caring more and more about Radio’s well being, upsetting the local townspeople who feel his attention should be elsewhere. Jones agrees and decides to put Radio’s care ahead of his own career, leading to a lifelong friendship between the two.

Friday Night Lights

Release Date: October 8, 2004

The film that sparked the hit television series starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. In Odessa, Texas, high school football is everything and the Permian Panthers are kings, as long as they win. The pressure is on everyone, from the coach to the players, and it takes its toll. Friday Night Lights follows a small group of players as they deal with the pressures of winning from all areas of their life and their coach as he attempts to lead them to victory.

We Are Marshall

Release Date: December 22, 2006

In the spring, one of the players who missed the flight due to injury begins to rally to convince the university to rebuild the football program for the 1971 season. Coach Jack Tengyel (Matthew McConaughey) and his assistant Red Dawson (Matthew Fox) struggle to rebuild the team until they convince the NCAA to allow freshmen to play. Building the team from the ground up causes Tengyel to reevaluate his outlook on the sport as he, the team and the school all discover that winning may not, in fact, be the most important thing of all.

Rudy

Release Date: October 22, 1993

Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger (Sean Astin) dreams of nothing more than playing football for Notre Dame University. Through his persistence, determination and hard work, Rudy inspires the people around him and eventually discovers that some dreams are worth the wait.

Pepperoni & Sausage Pizza: This dish is inspired by season one episode one’s scene in which Dustin offers Nancy a slice of this delicious item.
