This week’s episode starts off with a bang! We get to see a little more of Cicada and what happened between him and Gridlock. It appears that Cicada’s lightning blade is somehow able to drain a meta’s powers. Without any powers, Cicada easily defeated Gridlock and, as suspected, killed him.
Nora and Barry admit to the rest of the team that she’s not stuck there and that the reason she came back is due to Barry disappearing in the future. Thankfully, Iris has a clear head and points out that they have changed the future before and can do it again.
In the random side-story, Cecile’s powers are fading and that fact is really bumming her out.
Speaking of being bummed out, Cisco is in complete despair over his breakup with Gypsy. His connection with her was so strong that everything he vibes still has that link to her and it’s driving him mad. While Ralph thinks Cisco should vibe the death certificate to see who wrote it, Caitlyn convinces them all that it’s time to save Cisco from his misery.
Our new meta-villain of the week made an explosive entrance into a former crime associate’s warehouse of weapons. Vanessa Jansen puts the man into a box of some sort and compresses him down into a neat, highly dense meat cube. Yuck.
While Barry is working the crime scene, Nora shows up pretending to be a CSI, forcing Barry to cover for her by saying she’s an intern. In her perusal of the crime scene, she manages to simultaneously contaminate evidence and reveal more about the future technology of forensics. Seriously, a sieve holds water better than Nora contains future information. It’s ridiculous.
Meanwhile, Captain Singh tells Iris that Gridlock was killed in transport, leading her to investigate. She speaks to the convoy guards who are less than helpful, but then she digs up footage from the attack. There’s not much to see, but she does hear a very distinct noise.
Cecile decides that she is going to use the mental activity dampener 2.0, which Harry modified to hear the thoughts of whoever is wearing it, on Jenna. Joe is thoroughly against it. He has to explain to her that it is possible to parent without knowing the thoughts of the baby. He has a fair point. People have been doing it that way since, well, forever.
The brother of the man Vanessa killed has decided to get his revenge and take back their guns, but Vanessa isn’t having it. That’s when Nora and Barry show up. Barry gives instructions to Nora, which she promptly ignores. Then she gets herself stuck in one of Vanessa’s cubes and hurled across the city for Barry to save while Vanessa gets away.
The team learns that the cubes Vanessa creates are actually incredibly dense air molecules that she has pushed into cube form with her powers. It’s so dense that speedsters can’t even move enough to vibrate through them. We’ll just ignore the fact that Nora and the gangster from the beginning were both able to move and speak inside the cube. This new information combined with Cisco’s depression leads to Vanessa’s less than stellar meta nickname – Block.
In an effort to help Cisco, Ralph hooks him up with his personal stylist. The results are not great and Cisco is not enthused, despite the positive reactions of Caitlyn and Ralph. Done with the whole thing, he wants to move on to dealing with the death certificate. Caitlyn flips out and it becomes obvious that she is putting off dealing with the certificate for reasons of her own.
Barry decides that it’s time for Nora to learn the basics of basics. Unfortunately, as with everything else, Nora decides that she doesn’t need to listen to her dad. In an effort to show him that she’s awesome, she decides to throw a lightning bolt, but trips and ends up hitting Barry instead. The “look what I can do” attitude of Nora is extremely grating and I hope this particular story line does not go on forever. I really want to like Nora, but she’s coming off as annoying with her naivety being a danger to the team and Barry in particular.
Giving up, Barry takes his frustration and concern to Joe to ask for parental advice. After sharing an anecdote from Barry’s younger years, Joe points out how badly Nora must want to impress Barry because he’s not just her dad, but her hero.
Cisco talks to Caitlyn about her putting off the death certificate investigation. She admits that if he’s pretended to be dead this whole time, then he must not want to see her. He shares with her something Ralph wrote – “Accept that she’s not the love of your life because, if she was, she’d still be in it.” It really helped him see that Gypsy was not the one for him and there’s nothing he can do about it. He points out that she can still take a chance with her dad and find out for sure what her dad’s issue is, rather than wondering forever.
Barry is also handing out advice. He shows Nora his beginner training videos where he was not doing well. He tells her that she can’t skip the basics and go right to the top. When she tells him she only wanted to make him proud, he says, “Sometimes, for people with our abilities, the most impressive feat is restraint.”
The remaining arms-dealing brother decides to try again with Vanessa and this time, he brought back up. Luckily for her, Iris, Nora, and Barry realize they can find her by looking for an isolated atmospheric disturbance using the weather station’s Doppler radar. Nora and Barry show up and take out the gangsters. Making the rookie mistake of thinking he has the upper hand, Barry finds himself in one of the cubes and Vanessa proceeds to crush him. Nora distracts her, making Vanessa throw blocks until she’s too tired and Nora can put the meta cuffs on her, saving Barry.
Cisco and Ralph show up late to the party, but they aren’t the only ones. Cicada arrives, as well, throwing his lightning bolt dagger through Vanessa. Barry sends her with Nora to the hospital as the three guys stand-off against this new bad guy.
Just like with Gridlock, Cicada throws his dagger to the ground and it drains their powers and they quickly get their asses handed to them. While Barry is getting beat up, Cisco attempts to pull the dagger from the ground. This leaves him with bloody hands when Cicada recalls the dagger. Set to stab Barry, Cicada stops when he hears Nora yell, “Dad!” Then, he just gets up and walks away, disappearing into the night.
Back at the lab, their powers have returned and Caitlyn and Cisco decide to see what he can vibe from the death certificate. It appears her mother is watching the certificate be filled out, but Cisco wasn’t able to hold on for long, but he doesn’t know why.
Gathering the team, Iris tells them about Gridlock’s death and the video with the noise, the same noise she heard over Barry’s com when he was fighting the new meta. It turns out that Nora knows of Cicada. Did he know her? Is that why he stopped? Did he not kill Barry in an effort to not disrupt the timeline?
Whatever it is, we won’t know what she knows until next episode. As a bonus, Tom Cavanagh is back next week as Sherlock Wells, so that should be fun. However, I’m nervous as the episode is titled “The Death of Vibe” and it doesn’t look promising for Cisco. Check out next week’s promo and let us know what you think. Should we be worried about Cisco?

This week’s episode of This Is Us is 100% Jack-centric and delves deeper into the relationship between Jack and his younger brother, Nick. As always, spoilers abound so stop reading here if you have not yet caught up.
The episode opens with Jack in a helicopter in Vietnam. He is traveling to find Nick, his younger brother. He has a letter from Nick with the name of a province and, after traveling by helicopter and then jeep, Jack finally arrives at Nick’s camp. He walks up to an unseen man and says “Hello, little brother.” We are then taken back three weeks to Jack walking through a Vietnamese jungle with his men. He is talking to a fellow soldier, Donnie, who tells him that in 90 days he gets out of Vietnam and he’s going to play for the Giants or go to Pittsburgh. As they continue to talk, one of the soldiers ahead stops. Everyone else stops and Jack walks up to him to ask him what he has found. He tells Jack that he’s located a ‘toe popper’, a homemade landmine. He is instructed to blow it up and he does, without incident. Night comes. A couple of the men are throwing a football in an open field. Jack tells them to quit but Townie, one of the men, tells the other to go long. He runs deep for the football and steps on another landmine, killing himself. Almost immediately Jack and his men come under fire from the enemy, who have been lying in wait. The men fire back as Jack checks on them, shouting orders and making sure they’re all okay. Donnie is critically injured, his foot has been blown off. Jack yells for help and instructs for a Medivac to be called. Donnie asks for Jack to hand him his foot, Jack obliges, and Donnie begins crying. Jack holds him in his arms, reassuring him that he will be okay even though from the look in Jack’s eyes it is clear that Jack is not sure that he truly believes his own words. The next day the men signal for the Medivac. As they wait, Donnie tells Jack that he’ll be by himself now for his remaining 90 days. Jack shrugs it off and Donnie asks him if he doesn’t get tired of pretending that he is not scared. He tells Jack about how his mother tells him to remember to breathe when he gets scared. He remarks that it is funny how when they are scared of dying that they forget the one thing keeping them alive. The helicopter comes to take Donnie away.
Jack and his men continue to their camp where they are reassigned to security detail for a village. The men are shown relaxing and working to guard the village. The men are becoming too lax so Jack buys them a large case of beer, refusing to allow them any until they secure the village. Soon their superior officer arrives. He tells Jack he is not impressed with Jack’s men. Jack tells him that his brother is nearby and requests 24 hours to go see him. As they talk, a young Vietnamese boy brings a fish to Jack. Jack asks him if he caught it himself but the boy’s mother runs up and yells at him in Vietnamese. Townie walks past and yells racist epitaphs at the kid, still hurting from the sudden loss of his friend. Jack’s request is denied until they see how well the camp is running and how secure the men have made it. Jack is given permission to go find Nick and he is shown getting into the helicopter from the beginning of the episode.
The episode continues moving backward as we see Jack’s mother, Marilyn, fourteen months earlier. The mailman is bringing mail, including the letter from Nick which Jack takes with him to Vietnam. Jack arrives home later. His dad, Stanley, is asleep in his chair, still holding his cigarette which Jack puts out for him. He looks in on Marilyn who has been reading Nick’s letter. She leaves the room when Jack arrives. He picks up the letter and begins reading. Nick informs them he is in the Quang Nam Province and has gotten in trouble for endangering himself and everyone else in his unit. He is now a Private First Class, or PFC. He tells his family that he knows he will not make it out of the war alive but he wants to go out his way.
Jack looks in on Nick’s room as he thinks things over. He makes the decision to enlist and goes to his family doctor for a check-up. “I want to enlist, Doc. I need to be there with him,” he tells the doctor, who tells him that his own tachycardia is a very legitimate reason not to fight. Jack tells him that his only job is taking care of Nick, “even if I can’t do anything for him, I just need to be there.” The doctor can sense that Jack will not take no for an answer and instructs him how he can pass his physical even with his heart problem.

Continuing back in time, we see Jack walking into a garage to work on cars. Nick is there, worried about the upcoming draft. He calls himself the Lois Lane to Jack’s Superman, always needing to be saved. Jack assures him he will be okay. He tells them the two of them will go to a bar and watch something downtown. When he goes home to pick up Nicky that night we see that what they are going to watch is the national draft lottery broadcast. They go to the bar where Nick continues to become more and more worried. He has several drinks as they wait. Jack, optimistic, tells him that there is no way that they will call Nick’s birthday. He continues reassuring Nick as the lottery begins and, as the first four birth dates are called, Nick seems to begin to believe him. However, that ends when the announcer reads out Nick’s birthday. October 18th. Nick has been selected for the draft on only the 5th birthday called. Jack stands there, dumbfounded. Nick is expressionless. Jack tells him he has a plan to get him to Canada so that he does not have to serve. He assures him, and maybe himself, that he will be ok. The brothers arrive home late to find Stanley waiting up for them. He stands up and walks up to Nick, saying simply “Make me proud, son.” before turning and going upstairs to bed. Nicky simply stares.
The next day, Jack and Nick leave for what Marilyn calls a “hunting trip.” Stanley is watching from the porch, visibly upset. Nick tells Jack that if he runs, their father will never speak to him again. Jack jokes that Nick would be lucky if that ever happened. Nick begins to wonder about his life as Jack drives, he wishes he could see it from the end to the beginning instead of the other way around. He seems to be rethinking enlisting, telling Jack about how he could become a medic. Jack tells him that medics also get shot. The brothers get close to the Canadian border and stop at a motel to rest before Nick goes across the border the next day. The next day, however, Jack wakes up alone with a note. Nick has decided not to run away, telling Jack that it is his own turn to save the day.
We jump back again, this time fourteen years, and see Jack and Nick as children. Jack is playing with a football and asks Nick to play with him. Nick misses the ball and falls and breaks his glasses. He gets upset and worried that their dad will be mad but Jack assures him that their dad will be mad at Jack. Nick hates his glasses, saying no one tough ever wears them but Jack says that Superman does. When his brother disagrees, Jack tells him that when Superman is Clark Kent he wears glasses. The glasses mean that he is a tough guy in disguise. Later that night, the boys are in bed listening to Stanley yelling at Marilyn. Nick gets up and puts his glasses on the table by his bed. He walks up to his parents as Stanley continues yelling and tells him to leave their mother alone. Before Nick can be struck by their angry father Jack has arrived, placing himself between Nick and Stanley. Their dad does not hit Jack, instead muttering that they all deserve each other before leaving the house. The boys hug their mother, who comments on Jack’s racing heart. He assures her that his heart always beats fast and that he is fine.
The final jump backwards takes us to Nick’s birth, seven years earlier. Stanley is carrying Jack as Marilyn is wheeled into the delivery room. The nurse tells her how lucky she is to have a baby born on October 18th because 18 is the nurse’s lucky number. Marilyn tells the nurse that her husband’s birthday is October 19th and he is hoping for a baby with the same birthday. As Jack and Stanley wait, Jack asks if his dad wants a boy or a girl. His dad tells Jack another boy, which makes Jack extremely happy. As they wait, Stanley’s father arrives. He asks Stanley for news about the baby although it is apparent he is not at all interested. He has brought a flask which he drinks from as he waits. He offers some to his son who refuses, saying he doesn’t drink. Stanley tells his father that if the baby is born on the 19th they will share a birthday to which his father’s response is to get up and leave. He figures Stanley will give him any news. Nick is born two minutes before midnight, barely missing an October 19th birthday. Jack’s father holds Jack outside the hospital nursery window and points Nick out to him, telling him that his only job now is to look after his little brother. He points out all the other baby boys, all of whom share a birthday with Nick (and would have faced the same draft lottery as Nick).
Finally, we return to the beginning of the episode. Jack walks up behind an unseen man. “Hello, little brother.” The man, Nick, turns around. He appears anything but happy to see his older brother.
This week’s episode featured only one lead cast member, Milo Ventimiglia, a first for the show. It is a huge undertaking when any ensemble show focuses on only one character for an entire episode and for some people, the episode may seem underwhelming compared to the huge fast-paced ensemble work that we have come to know and love. However, I enjoyed getting this peak into what shaped Jack into the husband and father that he became.
The episode also left us with several questions. Could Jack’s need to protect Nick be the exact reason his brother was upset seeing him in Vietnam? What role, if any, did Jack’s heart condition play in his death? How did Stanley Pearson go from loving father and husband to angry drunk? And was Donnie the man reading Kevin Pearson’s email in last week’s episode? We will have to wait and see.

“You’re better together, your differences are your strengths, and nothing is stronger than your sisterhood. Nurture that.”
That is part of what Mel and Maggie Vera’s mother told them in a mother-daughter moment before the girls went out. Little did any of them know, everything was about to change drastically.
Back at the house, the girls’ mother gets a surprise visitor when a crow flies through the window into the house. You can tell she is nervous when she texts her daughters to come back home. In the attic, she is performing some kind of a spell when the circular window breaks open and a bunch of crows fly in and circle her. A cold mist starts to flow into the room but stops and retreats as she shouts,
“Hear this, I have three”
After getting the text from her mother, Mel leaves her girlfriends apartment and goes to get her sister from the sorority she is pledging at. When the girls get home and open the front door a crow flies out almost hitting them, it is dark and cold in the house, they can see their breath. When they enter the attic and see that the window is broken, they walk over and look out only to see the body of their mother.
Three months later, Macy Vaughn is walking with a friend talking when she sees the Vera’s family house she becomes emotional recognizing it. Macy has just started working at the university for a professor that has just come off of a suspension for harassment, which he makes a point to tell her that it was not true, then directly after complements her blouse. When reading the article about the death she not only recognizes her but learns she taught at the university as well.
While Mel is putting up protest posters around the university about the recently reinstated professor, she gets into an argument with a student named Cameron. In the heated discussion, Cameron mentions Mel’s mother, the argument ends with her punching him in the face.
Maggie comes home to get something, and the sisters fight about moving on from their mother’s death, Maggie accepts that it was an accident while Mel thinks she was murdered. The fighting stops when they hear a knock at the door, there standing is Macy holding up a photo of herself in her mother’s arms that she found when her father died.
“I think I’m your sister.”
When Macy walks into the house there is a flash of lightning and the power goes out. Another argument starts when Mel will not accept that Macy is their sister.
Later that night, Macy is at the bar with her friend Galvin, she tells him that going to the house was about curiosity not that she needs them. Things get heated and the beer that Macy is drinking flies out of her hands and hits the wall shattering. She runs out apologizing to him saying she is clumsy and drunk.
At the sorority house, Maggie is getting a tour and one of the pledge leaders introduces her to a few others in the house. When Maggie goes to shake their hands, she can hear their thoughts. Understandably scared, she runs out.
Mel is meeting with her now ex-girlfriend at a coffee shop to talk about Macy. A guy trips and his coffee is about to fall when Mel reaches out and everything freezes. As she is panicking, things unfreeze for a few seconds before freezing again. She says she has to go and runs out of the café.
Mel suddenly wakes up next to Maggie and Macy, they are all tied to chairs in their attic. Harry, the man who now has the job their mother had, head of the women’s department tells them,
“You are witches, witches who are destined to save the world from impending doom. That’s right, you are the Charmed ones. The most powerful trio of witches.”
Harry snaps his fingers and the rope that was tying them to the chairs disappear. He tells them that he is a White lighter and confirms Mel’s suspicion that their mother was murdered. He shows them the Book of Shadows and that this is their birthright and they have 48 hours to decide if they want to accept these powers or not. Mel seems to be the only one at the moment who is fully on board with being a witch.
When Maggie is taking a shortcut through the words she sees and approaches a dog, the dogs face suddenly morphed demon like and attacks her. Back at the attic the three sisters with Harry are looking for the demon that the dog belongs to, Maggie asks Harry if the cut on her face will scar, he reaches out and heals it. After yet another argument between Mel and Maggie, Maggie goes outside only to be taken.
While researching a way to kill the demon Macy figures out a compound in the demon dogs’ blood reacts badly with baking soda that it dies. Turns out, Maggie was taken by the sorority for initiation night. The sisters think that the head sorority girl is the demon. When Mel throws the baking soda at the sorority girl nothing happens, so who is the demon? Turns out the demon is in Maggie’s ex-boyfriend Brian, Macy throws the baking soda at him and the demon dies.
During a sister moment on the way home, Macy tells them that they are better together which is what their mom used to tell them. The three of them curl up in bed and watch videos and of their mother. While the other two sleep Macy goes over everything about the demons and thinks the one that killed their mother is still out there and is now after Mel.
At the protest rally, Mel can feel the cold and follows it to the lab of the professor that was accused of harassment. He transforms into an ice upper-level demon and is about to attack her. Maggie, Macy, and Cameron rush in and the demon throws an ice spike stabbing Cameron. Macy starts to read the spell to vanquish the demon, but Harry tells her it will not work without the ‘power of three’ and they have to embrace their powers. They all agree and say yes, the demon separates them and fills the room with ice mist. Macy uses her power to bring her sisters to her, they take each other’s hands and say the spell killing the demon. Unfortunately, he is not the demon that killed their mom, and as he is dying says,
“Now it’s begun”
Harry heals Cameron and the girls leave arm in arm to head home, Macy is now living there as well. The episode ends with the girls using the Ouija board to try to contact their mom, it works, and she uses it to send the message “Don’t trust Harry” when the girls turn around he is right behind them.
