Looking Back: How the ‘Giving Back Tour’ Gave Back to Us

Out of the four Supernatural conventions I have been to, The Giving Back Tour convention in Cleveland has by far been the best.

SPNCle PJ Party- Picture from Briana Buckmaster’s Twitter

This convention held many firsts for me: first PJ Party, first meet and greet, first time to meet some of the actors, first time going to a con with photo ops pre-planned, first time in the pit at a Saturday Night Special. But there is one first that actually changed my entire convention experience. This was my first time going to a convention alone with the intention of meeting online friends there. Now, this is not my first time to go to a con alone; my very first convention, I went by myself because I did not know anyone else to go with at that point. This was, however, the only time I have gone with someone to a convention without ever meeting them in person.

In a short amount of time after making the decision to become more involved in fandom instead of watching from afar, I made several new online friends. Many of those people were fellow writers at Nerds and Beyond. A large portion of the Nerds and Beyond staff were attending the convention in Cleveland, and once I figured out that I was able to go, I was immediately sold on the chance to actually meet the people I had been talking to for months in person.

Upon first arriving in Cleveland on Thursday, I was greeted by someone at the airport whom I had never met before, but was also heading to the convention hotel. This lovely person (who ended up being a Creation volunteer) saw my Wayward shirt, asked if I was going to the con hotel, and offered to share her Lyft with me. The small amount of anxiety I had about being alone vanished at that point because here was this person who only knew me by my shirt, but recognized that I was family and treated me as such.

To experience a little more of the city of Cleveland instead of just the hotel and convention center, me and two of the other writers ventured over to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for a tour. It never felt like this was our first time meeting. The three of us simply said, “Hi,” exchanged a hug, and continued our previous conversation like it had been in person the whole time. The same exact thing happened every other time I met someone I ‘knew’. We would see each other, scream a name or some variation of, “Yay, it’s so good to finally meet you!”, hug, and then continue on with a conversation without hesitation.

One of the joys of going to a convention with online fandom friends is that those people have other friends at the convention, too. So once you make that connection with someone, you begin to connect with one, two, five of their friends, and by the end of the con, just look at how many people you have met and come to enjoy spending time with and talking to!

Compared to my hometown convention of Nashville, the Cleveland con was tiny, and I loved it. With the crowds being smaller, the lines for autos, ops, or bathrooms were shorter. It was easier to navigate around the convention center without feeling like you are packed in like sardines. You were able to get to know people easier or at the very least, recognize more people and give them a smile and wave as you pass by.

Vendors had the ability to not only sell their products, but get to know their customers better, and explain the thoughts and inspirations behind their merchandise. Some of my favorite moments were spent wandering around the vendor’s room with friends, talking to vendors and admiring their products, or spending time at the Random Acts table that was set up in the same area. I was able to have meaningful conversations with multiple vendors that I very likely would not have had the opportunity to have if I was at a larger convention where five or six people are crowding a popular booth at once. I was also lucky that Louden Swain had decided to sell their new CD’s early when bought in person at their vendor’s table. I eagerly bought a copy for myself and a friend in order to listen to it a few weeks before most everyone else.

The ‘Giving Back Tour’ really did give fans more interactions with the cast of Supernatural. The panels were longer, and consisted of actor-fan interactions on stage that were not only in the form of Q&A. You did not even have to pay the extra price for an autograph or picture to have that chance to be face-to-face with your favorite star; all you had to do is attend the panel, raise your hand as a volunteer for a game, and hope for the best.

It was easy to tell that the fans were not the only ones who enjoyed the on-stage games and shenanigans. When it was time to play the games, the cast members really got into it. Fun and amusing panels were made even more entertaining while those both on stage and in the audience would dissolve into laughter about Briana Buckmaster hinting how her knees were not shaking like they were supposed to, or Alexander Calvert not understanding the rock salt clues, or Ruth Connell crashing Misha Collins’ panel with amazing dance moves, or Rachel Miner trying to figure out what in the world her mad libs actually meant, or Rob Benedict and Matt Cohen trying to act out ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, or Misha yelling at the ‘crew’ members on stage to get it right. All of the panels that were already wonderful to watch before, became this amazing jumbled mess of chaos and hilarity.

Speaking of games and chaos, the Escape From Perdition game needs to be added to all Supernatural conventions from here until the end of time. The game gave you even more of an excuse to interact with other people at the convention and get to know them. It also gave you many chances to do a small amount of good in the world by donating to the featured charity, donating your hotel’s toiletries, sending kindness cards, creating an origami unicorn with a special note inside for someone, and many more. I, personally, was especially good at being a “roadie” for people. My friends kept asking if someone had a phone charger or a snack or something else small and unimportant, and I was able to just whip it out of my handy backpack and say, “Here you go! Use it well!” My little group of friends had so much fun figuring out the best and most entertaining ways to ‘earn our wings’ and complete the game. It gave you such a sense of accomplishment to turn your card in, be handed your wings, and hear them ring the bell in your honor. The second part of the game was completing all of the steps again, but turning your regular stamps into ‘Halo’ stamps. The ‘Halo’ items were all ones that promote giving, kindness, charity, and loving yourself and others. If you completed the ‘Halo’ tasks, then you were awarded with a special Random Acts challenge coin.

The Escape from Perdition game was such a blast that I willingly skipped panels for the first time in order to continue playing. It made the time normally spent waiting around on your phone into an opportunity to run, laugh, interact with others, and be inspired to do good works. This game was definitely a highlight of my weekend so thank you to Misha for making it and Charlie Capen and Random Acts for running it.

The atmosphere of the entire convention was one of charity. Every part of it supported giving back to each other and the community. All of the extra activities, quests, and games helped to make this convention something extremely special. I look forward to attending more of these unique conventions if Creation decides to continue with more of them (which I sincerely hope they do).

While I could easily expound upon the adrenaline rush I had when singing “Don’t Stop Me Now” with my girls on stage at karaoke, the constant high of being in the pit during an incredible Saturday Night Special, the sheer joy of being in a Kim and Bri sandwich, or the excitement of seeing Misha enjoying his time in the op room, I will simply say that the memories from this entire weekend will always make my heart full of love for my friends, the cast of this wonderful show, and this fandom.

‘This is Us’ Season 3, Episode 8 Recap: “Six Thanksgivings”

0
“KaToby”, aka Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan), tackle Thanksgiving dinner on their own. Courtesy Ron Batzdorff/NBC.

It’s Thanksgiving time for the Pearsons, and this week we see not one, not two, but six Thanksgiving dinners! Some questions are answered (such as the origin of Jack’s necklace), and of course there is plenty of family drama.

Spoilers ahead, so if you have not watched last week’s episode you might want to stop here.

This Thanksgiving episode opens with Rebecca crying, leading the audience to assume she’s remembering Jack, until he leans over her and asks if she needs any help. She responds that he should have asked before she began chopping the onions. This is the last Thanksgiving while the kids are still at home, and she wonders if they should have done more to make their last Thanksgiving a big event. Jack remarks their families are terrible but at least Miguel is coming over.

Rebecca is not happy about this, as Miguel’s ex-wife Shelly is her best friend and she feels like a traitor. Jack argues that Miguel is alone on his first Thanksgiving, to which Rebecca responds, “Maybe he wouldn’t be alone if he’d fought a little harder to save his marriage.” This is an interesting remark coming from Rebecca, considering she would later marry Miguel, who is also Jack’s best friend.

They hear the kids laughing and decide to see what’s going on. Kate and Kevin are laughing at Randall’s answer to his college application essay question. Kate and Kevin feel that he should answer the question Who had the greatest impact on your life? with the fireman who brought him to the hospital as a baby. Randall disagrees, saying the question is flawed, because no single person can have the greatest impact on someone’s life. Randall turns to his dad, who says “The fireman’s a lay-up,” much to Randall’s chagrin. As the family enjoys a playful moment together, Miguel arrives, arguing with Shelly on his phone and immediately bringing down the mood. Rebecca looks uncomfortable.

The Pearsons and Miguel gather around the table for dinner, and as the Pearsons continue to joke with each other, Miguel leaves the room. He tells Jack that he is worried his kids are being turned against him and it’s his own doing, because he put more time and energy into his work than into his family. Jack reminds Miguel about everything he has accomplished since coming to America from Puerto Rico and tells him to take that drive and apply it to his kids. “You don’t want to be 65 years old and not know your grandkids.”

In present time, we are given a true Thanksgiving blessing as Randall walks out of the bathroom to answer a question from Beth about Jae-Won and their soup kitchen visit wearing nothing but a pair of black boxer briefs. Beth wants their visit moved to the rec centerm and she says that she does not think Jae-Won likes her working for Randall’s campaign. Randall tells her that’s crazy because she’s had “300 stupendous ideas” and then begins to list them for her. Feeling better about things, she agrees and says she is “crushing” being his field director.

She then talks about Toby and Kate, who are coming over to cook while they are gone to the soup kitchen. Tess comes to get Beth, telling her she doesn’t feel well. Tess says that she will get Kate to keep an eye on her while they are gone and tells her to go lie down.

Kate and Toby arrive. Randall excitedly hugs his sister, asking how she is with “her little turducken in the oven.” She explains the morning sickness hasn’t hit her too bad and that Toby has been helping. Randall and Beth wonder if they are ok, and Toby explains that small victories are important to his recovery and “…helping Kate cook a 15-pound Butterball using Snoop and Martha’s recipe will be a small but meaningful victory.”

Randall, Beth, Deja, and Annie begin walking out as Randall notices a giant teddy bear on their table. He asks Annie what’s going on, she tells him that it is a secret. “It’s creepy is what it is,” says her dad.

They arrive at the rec center soup kitchen, where Jae-Won meets them and asks why they thought it was better to move from the church. It turns out that the church’s soup kitchen is the biggest in Philadelphia, complete with big media coverage, and now Randall’s opponent Councilman Brown is serving at that soup kitchen and getting the big coverage.

Beth tells him they don’t need a photo op, but that they need Randall to connect to the people of Philadelphia. She cuts Jae-Won off as Annie comes to get her mother. Jae-Won is upset with Beth’s role in the campaign but Randall refuses to budge.

As Randall, Beth, Deja, and Annie serve food, Deja thinks back to when she was on the other side of the table. Annie tells her that she is giving out too many cookies, but Deja explains that the person in charge does not understand what it’s like. Beth worries that her messages to Kate aren’t going through. Jae-Won excitedly runs up and tells them that he has convinced the photographer from the church to come to the rec center. Beth argues that it is not a good idea, and Jae-Won gets upset. They argue for a moment, and then Randall blurts out, “I don’t care if it’s a mistake. she’s my wife.” Jae-Won storms off as Beth, having overheard, walks out as well.

Once outside, Beth asks Randall how many of her ideas he actually thought were good and how many he was just trying to make her feel better about. He does not answer her but she knows, and before they can discuss it, she gets a message on her phone telling her that they have to get home.

In Vietnam, the third Thanksgiving begins. Jack walks up behind Nick while he is working on the wire fence, and asks him how he is feeling. Nick complains that he was better where he was, to which Jack remarks that he has almost got everything out of his system. They look at a mother and son, and Jack mentions how the son hurt his foot on the wire the week before. Nick says the wire is doing its job.

In the mess tent, Jack’s men ask about Nick. After Jack says he is fine, another medic chimes in and says, “He ain’t fine. He’s a medic. He shovels guts back into body cavities.” Jack listens quietly and then notices the young mother struggling to carry two buckets of water in front of Nick. As he goes to help, one of Jack’s men snaps their picture (the picture Kevin now carries). Jack is obviously disappointed when Nick does not make a move to help her.

Later on, Jack brings fish to the young woman and her family. The boy is sick, so Jack goes to check on him. His foot has become infected by the wire. Jack leaves to go get Nick to help, but Nick refuses. Jack orders him to help. Nick still refuses, so Jack does what he can to help while Nick leaves. Afterwards, Jack goes to find him. He tells him the village is only women, children, and old men and Nick needs to “wake the hell up.”

Nick (Michael Angarano) remembers his first commanding officer. Courtesy Ron Batzdorff/NBC.

Nick begins to tell Jack about when he first arrived in Vietnam and how nervous he was, and he relays a story of how his first commanding officer got the rest of his unit to respect him. It is very obvious that Nick has a deep respect for this man, who was called “Bones”. Then he tells Jack about how the Viet Cong killed Bones. He was targeted by the brother of a woman that he was kind to. Jack listens quietly as Nick talks. “You can be nice to them all you want, Jack. But they’re not just women and children.”

William finishes a song on the piano as a man (Jesse) walks up clapping. They introduce themselves and soon build a friendship with each other. Jesse tells him how he became an addict and how Thanksgiving depresses him. He cannot face his family’s questions about his sobriety. William invites him to come listen to him and other musicians playing together. He jokes about listening to jazz sober but agrees to go.

Toby and Kate are preparing Thanksgiving dinner. Kate puts him in charge of the cranberry sauce. When Toby worries that it is a “high stakes” job, she points him to Randall’s recipe binder and a recipe that requires “fresh mint” from Randall’s garden. Toby begins panicking, and Kate reassures him that they are going to be ok. Then we have a wonderfully cute “KaToby on 3?” moment between the two.

Toby goes upstairs carrying food for Tess and meets her coming out of the bathroom carrying boxes of feminine products. Tess screams, and Toby jumps and goes back downstairs to tell Kate that Tess might need her.

Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Tess (Eris Baker) have a bonding moment. Courtesy Ron Batzdorff/NBC.

Kate goes to check on Tess and asks if she has called Beth. She says Beth did not answer, so Kate asks if she needs anything. They go back to Tess’ room where Tess says she can never face Toby again. Kate shares her own embarrassing first period story, which happened on vacation with Miguel’s family. Kate then tells her that she can talk to her about anything, like her first boyfriend. “Or girlfriend,” Tess quietly adds. “Or girlfriend,” repeats Kate.

Miguel and Rebecca are driving to his daughter Amber’s house. Miguel is distracted and tells Rebecca that he feels like they were only invited because Shelly wouldn’t be there. He apologizes that Rebecca is missing Thanksgiving with her family, but she reassures him that she is happy to spend time with them.

During the dinner, it is clear that the relationship among Miguel and Rebecca and Rebecca’s kids is still strained. This is made extremely apparent when Miguel’s son tells Rebecca, “First, you steal my father from my mother, and now you’re trying to kill my brother-in-law.” Miguel talks about how he promised Jack to fight for his kids, but he was lucky if the kids gave him any time. He tells them how they both found each other, ten years after Jack died and after Shelly remarried, and that he was not going to apologize for them being together. There is an awkward quiet before Rebecca asks about the score of the football game.

Rebecca goes downstairs to Toby, who is surrounded by bags from different restaurants. He burned the food and says it is a disaster. Kate tells him it’s Jack Pearson magic.

The episode ends with Randall reading his college application essay answer, as a montage of the various Thanksgiving dinners plays. We see the young Vietnamese woman giving her necklace to Jack in thanks. And the giant teddy bear of Annie’s? They have set up a video call of Kevin to “join them” for Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Interview: Hayden Lee Talks Music, Rockwood Music Festival & More! [EXCLUSIVE]

0
Hayden Lee – Courtesy of Liz Larson, Staff Photographer

Hayden Lee is a wonderful musician. He’s performed at Rockwood Music Festival in Germany alongside Louden Swain, Jason Manns, and more of our favorites. He’s also had cameo appearances at Supernatural conventions in North Carolina. Recently, we were fortunate to talk with Hayden about how he got involved with our passionate little family, his musical career, and more.

Nerds and Beyond: For those unaware, how did you get introduced into the world of music surrounding the Supernatural family?

Hayden Lee: One word – Jason Manns.. crap, that was two. Jason and I have been good friends since we sang in an all male a cappella group (The Stairwells) at the College of William and Mary (graduated about 3-4 years ago).

When I was close to quitting music after not a lot of traction on my debut album, “House of the Lonely Souls” (and having kid numero dos), Jason called me and asked me to tour with him in Germany with our other a cappella college buddy Emad Alaeddin. Jason’s music had been used in Supernatural, and he had started doing a lot of the convention circuit at that time. My wife graciously let me go (despite our 3-month old awesome girl. THANKS to mom for the help!), and the rest is history.

Nerds and Beyond: Who are your musical influences?

Hayden Lee: While I love and respect all types of music, I LOVE the grunge era. I mean, REALLY love it! Such an influential time in music and shaped all of my weird thoughts/poems into songs eventually. Favorite bands of all time: Nirvana, Chevelle, Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters, Tool, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, The Doors, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Audioslave, Soundgarden, Seether, and Nothing But Thieves climbing is climbing my charts (oh, and did I mention Boyz 2 Men as well?? Yeah, that’s right. I did it).

Rob Benedict and Hayden Lee – Courtesy of Kayla Renee Photography, VP of Nerds and Beyond

Nerds and Beyond: What is your favorite part of performing at events like Rockwood and the Supernatural conventions?

Hayden Lee: The vibe and the people. It’s something special being able to connect with all of these special people and them being curious/interested in you and trusting your talent just because of our common love of the show and the people on it. And the actors/performers are amazing and SUPER cool peeps! I mean, I’ve only been to two conventions to hang out with Jason and see what the buzz was about, and Jason and Rob Benedict both had me come out on stage and perform with them at the Saturday Night Special, which was rad and unexpected! Both were broadcasted on Stageit, so I essentially got to perform for thousands of people (which Jason subtly reminded me of in Jacksonville..RIGHT BEFORE I WENT ON!! He’s such a rascal!). Even though I was just a friend, the actors whom I didn’t already know treated me like family. I also learned quickly to never leave your cell phone unattended.

The Rockwood family is really special since I’ve been doing that since the inception of the festival. Those fans/participants are so warm and accepting of all of our music, and we just have the BEST time with all of them every year. It has grown every year, which is a testament to what Jason and Sabine (and all of the Rockwood team) have built. It’s a little tiring for the performers, because we don’t really sleep. At all. For THREE DAYS!!! In addition to the wonderfully awesome fans, the shenanigans that go on in the green room, from faux, almost full length and not-at-all fully sober talk shows to pizza box chariot races and, not to mention, some of the best last minute compilations between the musicians and actors, make the lack of sleep so worth it. It really is an awesome time that I look forward to every year!

Nerds and Beyond: If Jason Manns puts together another Covers with Friends and you are asked to be on it, what song would you want to cover?

Hayden Lee: Really great question! Hmmmmmmm… I would love to do either “Billie Jean” or Bastille’s “Pompeii”. I do ‘em a tad different, which is fun (Billie Jean inspired by the super awesome Chris Cornell version).

Hayden Lee – Courtesy of Kayla Renee Photography, VP of Nerds and Beyond

Nerds and Beyond: Over the last couple months, you debuted two new songs, “Daybreak” and “Round the Bend”. When can we expect a new album?

Hayden Lee: STOP LOOKING UNDER THE TABLE TO SEE WHOSE FOOT IS TOUCHING YOURS, AND JUST LET IT BE A SURPRISE!! Just kidding. Such a great question that I’ve been pondering about how great it is. It’s just, like, super great, and that’s why I’m happy that it was asked. Did I answer, or, wait, what was the question again?

Nerds and Beyond: What’s your favorite band and your favorite song by them?

Hayden Lee: Very tough question, but… Nirvana “In Bloom” – There!! I did it, and, man, I feel good about it!

Nerds and Beyond: At Nerds and Beyond, we sure do love our Dad humor, and you are one of the kings of it. So, what’s your favorite dad joke?

Hayden Lee: Oh my gosh, there are so many good ones that it’s hard to pick just one! Like, you have the one about the kids being annoying on the car trip, and then the one about the lawn work mounting up, OR there’s the one about paying bills on time.. man, so many classics, it’s hard to pick just one! Wait a minute, was that whole answer a Dad joke, too?

You can follow Hayden on Twitter @haydenleemusic and find his music on cdbaby.com.

You can read about my experience seeing Hayden live here.

‘The Bad Idea Tour’: How You Can Help

After months of waiting for the day to arrive, it’s finally here! The Bad Idea Tour, a team of Supernatural actors and friends including Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, Rob Benedict, Rachel Miner, Ruth Connell, Adam Fergus, Danneel Ackles, Genevieve Padalecki, Vicki Vantoch, and Jason Manns, will be running in the Amica Seattle Marathon to raise money to abate childhood hunger tomorrow!

The Bad Idea Tour Team featuring (from left to right) Misha Collins, Jensen Ackles, Adam Fergus, Jared Padalecki, Rachel Miner, Rob Benedict, and Jason Manns. Photo via Crowdrise.

It was first announced at a Supernatural convention back in August that ‘The Bad Idea Tour’ was in the works, and since then, there has been a steady stream of Tweets, videos, and pictures from members of the team training, promoting the race, and most importantly, talking about the reason behind the “bad idea” in the first place.

Misha Collins spoke frankly about his personal experience with childhood hunger in this video posted to Twitter.

In a training video posted to Instagram by Jensen Ackles, he also talks about how 1 in 6 children in the United States don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Ackles speaks about the link, www.badideatour.com, where donations can be made directly, but that isn’t the only way to help.

In a Tweet made by Misha Collins, he shared how you can help in person if you happen to be in the Seattle area.

As the image in the Tweet says, “You can help by donating canned goods today from 11am-6pm PST at the Seattle Marathon Random Acts table. All donations will be going to Move For Hunger, which is a non-profit organization that collects non-perishable food items to deliver to food banks all across North America.”

According to Move For Hunger’s official website, they are currently working with more than 1,000 relocation companies in all 50 states and in Canada, and have donated more than 11 million pounds of food to food banks in the United States and Canada, accounting for more than nine million meals for people in need!

The Random Acts table is located at the Seattle Marathon Expo at 1900 5th Avenue, Seattle, WA, 98101 to collect your canned goods, so if you’re in the area or available to travel, please stop by to donate to this worthwhile cause.

The Random Acts donation table at the Amica Seattle Marathon. Photo via the Random Acts Facebook page.

Don’t worry if you’re not in the area (or not even in the country!), because you can still help from home. Of course, you can donate to The Bad Idea Tour directly here, but there’s another way to help, too. The Seattle Marathon takes place during Random Acts’ annual Endurance 4 Kindness event, which is running from November 22 – November 25. E4K is best summed up on their website.

E4K is about pushing yourself to do your personal best. Run marathons, do 5K’s, knit massive quantities of blankets for the homeless, climb mountains, or host community-wide doodle-thons. The choice is yours. Keep in mind Kindness is a marathon, not a sprint. Stretch yourself to do the most that you can in the time that you have, and show others that spreading kindness is worth the effort.

Though E4K is almost over, you can still sign up here to start your own fundraiser to help out if you would rather take a more hands-on approach.

As if all of these options aren’t already compelling enough, Ackles, Padalecki, and Collins announced in a recent (hilarious) video that they will collectively match donations up to $100,000! Currently, there’s almost $90,000 raised, so there isn’t much further to go before that $100,000 doubles!

Everybody involved in the Amica Seattle Marathon in support of Random Acts has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes, not to mention that the Bad Idea Tour team will be running 26.2 miles tomorrow in order to raise money to fight childhood hunger. So please, donate canned goods or money if you can, sign up for your own E4K if you can’t, and show the team how we can help them turn this “bad idea” into something great!

The Flash: “The Icicle Cometh” Recap – Season 5, Episode 6

0
Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) finally returns! Image courtesy of The CW.

This week, Caitlin finally gets to find her dad who has supposedly been dead and Team Flash catches a break with their investigation of Cicada. They might not be as right as they think they are though.

This episode starts off with a new peek at how Cicada works. He’s sitting inside Jitters with his dagger inside a bag. When a meta passes by, the dagger flashes. He dons his mask and follows this adorable, tiny girl out to her car. She’s not worried and why should she be? Her hands turn into swords. That’s pretty useful. If all women had that, we wouldn’t have to carry mace anymore.

The aptly named Raelene Sharp (Cassandra Ebner) shows off her sword hands. Image courtesy of The CW.

She put up a damn good fight and even managed to disarm and injure Cicada. However, his dagger always returns. Before she can deliver the final blow, the dagger comes flying back to suck up her powers and plant itself in her back. So close random meta girl! So close! She almost ended the big bad of this season. That’s pretty amazing!

Team Flash is officially back up and running with four amazing satellites. Yes, four! Using his new toys satellites, Cisco is able to science his way to forty-six spots where pieces of Sally, their former satellite, should have landed. However, they only have to worry about where the core landed as it had the highest concentration of dark matter and they know that Cicada’s dagger has similar amounts.

Since they know he was injured during the Enlightenment, they decide to check with FEMA for any fathers who may have come into one of their sites for treatment. While Ralph goes to get Joe’s help with that, Iris and Sherloque decide to find the satellite core. Nora, who is completely in awe of her mother after watching her jump off a building, decides to go with her. Aww! Why do they keep making me flip-flop on how I feel about Nora?

This leaves Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin with nothing to do. That’s not a coincidence because the boys had been doing some digging. They found a Tannhauser black ops site at the North Pole where Caitlin’s father was the last person in and that was a week after he died. He never logged back out. They use the extrapolator to get to the site and Barry phases them all inside. After a very quick look around, they meet Caitlin’s dad, Thomas. He already knows who Barry and Cisco are due to being in contact with certain scientists in the past, including Harrison Wells. Thanks to Wells, he also had a video uplink to S.T.A.R. Labs, but it only began to work again recently. After a reboot, it only acted as a one-way video. He could see the lab, but had no way to make contact.

Thomas said he ended up there after desperately trying dangerous means to stop his ALS. He felt it wise to quarantine himself from others so he didn’t cause anyone else harm if things went wrong. He did manage to freeze the progression of his disease. Unfortunately, the black ops site was closed down and he was trapped inside, surviving only by rationing his food and water and spending months at a time in a cryogenic chamber. Caitlin tells him that he won’t need to do that anymore because she’s bringing him back to S.T.A.R. Labs.

Caitlin wants to run some tests on her father, but he’s so excited to be back in the real world that she decides to take him for a walk instead. While she may be happy about having her dad back. Cisco is wary. The story Thomas told was full of holes and has him on edge.

Ralph finds out that Joe is not home, but Cecile is and she is itching to do something, anything. When he points out that he needs someone intimidating, Cecile reminds him that she is the district attorney and that she teleported the Flash into the Thinker’s mind while giving birth. She saved the world between contractions. That’s badass. So, after she pumps some milk, they get on their way to meet with FEMA. That doesn’t go so well since Cecile doesn’t have a warrant and the assistant field manager knows that he doesn’t have to provide her with the names of those they’ve helped without one. Despite her attitude, he brushes her off, leaving her feeling like she’s lost her mojo.

At one of the forty-six debris sites, Nora and Iris are back to having trouble connecting because Nora wants to see her mom in action, but Iris is used to doing things on her own. They decide to interview the foreman of a construction site who was there the night of the Enlightenment. Sherloque is smart enough to tell that that is a horrible idea. He instructs Nora to use her speed to check the site for the core while Iris interviews the foreman and he looks for clues. It makes sense so off they go. When Nora doesn’t find anything, Sherloque suggests she check out the other sites, but she doesn’t want to go. The whole reason she wanted to go with Iris and Sherloque was so she could spend time with her mom. Sherloque has an idea.

While walking with Caitlin, Thomas suddenly has an attack of some sort and passes out. As she sits him down on a bench, she finds his skin from his wrist up looks like it’s covered in icy scales. Back at the lab, tests show that he has a cryogenic malignancy that is rewriting his genetic code. It cured his ALS, but it could also kill him.

This is when she realizes that she must have had the genetic marker for ALS, as well. Killer Frost, Khione as Thomas knew her, was created by her dad giving her the same treatment that he took. Her dual personalities somehow kept her from having the same issues that were killing her father. She decided to make a serum from her blood cells to help him. To do what is needed, they need to lower his body temperature to absolute zero. Thanks to a laser cooling device that the DOD happens to have just outside of town, Barry and Caitlin are ready to get started. Cisco is not okay with the plan, but he is outnumbered and agrees to help.

Cicada shows up at the hospital and is once again scolded by Dr. Ambres for not letting her help him. He takes a few items from the medical supply closet and leaves. As far as he’s concerned, he has a job to do and it seems that he’s going to do it until the moment he drops dead.

Sherloque takes the girls down by the waterside where he proceeds to make tea while they stand there getting annoyed. Iris finally realizes they’re next to a bulletin board where a flyer shows that there was a carnival going on the night of the Enlightenment. Together, Iris and Nora come to the conclusion that a father could have taken his child to the carnival. Since Nora wasn’t able to find the core on land, they figure it must be in the water they’re standing next to. Isn’t Sherloque a genius?

Cisco decides to go back to where they found Thomas to hack a computer there. Instead, he ends up accidentally vibing a cryogenic canister and sees Thomas putting something inside. It turns out to be skin grafts. Cisco believes that the cure did give Thomas a second personality and that alter is wearing Thomas’ skin. Thomas admits that he has used the skin graphs on himself to cover some of the crystallization that has been happening on his body, but Cisco still doesn’t believe him. Caitlin gets upset since all she can see is her father and she sends Cisco away.

Barry follows him to ask what’s going on and Cisco points out that Barry is only seeing what he wants to see – another perfect father-daughter moment like he got with Nora. If he’d look with logic, he might see what Cisco does.

After talking it out with Ralph, Cecile realizes she didn’t lose her mojo. Residual powers from her pregnancy have her being an empath now and she remembers that she felt the FEMA director’s fear. They realize he must be hiding something and they intend to find out what it is. The two of them return to the FEMA center with new information. The assistant director happens to drive a Lamborghini. That’s quite the car for a man working on a government salary. Turns out, he’s been telling citizens their claims were denied and then pocketing the money himself. No surprise that he willingly turns over the names, but Cecile turns him in anyway.

Back at Orlin’s house, he seems to be barely hanging on. The sword-hands girl did a real number on him. His vision goes blurry and he can barely stand. He ends up passing out when trying to change his bandage.

Barry tries to explain to Caitlin that Cisco was just worried about her and that there is a lot they don’t know. She refuses to believe anything other than that is her dad until she finishes the serum. She points out that if given to a human it will suppress their malignant side, but if she was to give it to a cryogenic meta, it would permanently suppress their human side. If Cisco is right, this meta side of her father could be trying to get Thomas erased completely.

It turns out that Cisco was right all along. When they confront Thomas, he shows his meta side. A blast of cold air crystallizes all the liquid in the lungs of Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin, knocking them out. This lets Meta-Thomas grab the serum and he heads to the DOD. He starts up the cold laser and the temperature starts dropping. Once it reaches negative four hundred and sixty degrees, aka absolute zero, he will be able to inject himself with the serum turning himself into a human icicle. Thus is born his meta name – Icicle.

Thomas Snow (Kyle Secor) is being taken over by his meta personality – Icicle.

Team Flash rushes to stop him. Unfortunately, it’s so cold that Nora and Barry are unable to run. The speed is dependent on their molecules moving. In such cold conditions, their molecules can barely move at all. Cisco, Ralph, and Caitlin use the extrapolator to breach there, but Ralph and Cisco are similarly affected. It’s so cold, they can barely move. Caitlin, on the other hand, is fine. Just as the temperature reaches absolute zero, Icicle prepares to inject himself. Out of nowhere, Caitlin knocks him back with an ice blast of her own. Just like that, Killer Frost is back! Woohoo!

He tries to talk her into joining him in erasing their human sides, but she refuses because of her friends. When he attempts to hurt them, she once again knocks him back. After a few solid punches, her actual dad came through for a brief moment, but then Icicle was back. He knocks Caitlin away and takes off through the roof. She breaks the cold laser and the room begins to instantly heat up. The team assures her that they will get her father back.

Since they now know that Killer Frost is still there, they realize that Devoe didn’t use Melting Point’s powers to take Killer Frost away. He used Brainstorm’s powers to create a mental block, one she broke through for a moment. Cisco gives her the mental activity enhancer in hopes that she will be able to hear Killer Frost. If they communicate enough and get strong enough, they won’t need the enhancer anymore. Caitlin is thrilled and for the first time, she gets to hear Killer Frost’s voice in her mind.

In the speed lab, Sally the satellite’s core sits on display after being salvaged by the mother-daughter duo of Iris and Nora. A jagged chunk missing from it matches the shape of Cicada’s dagger. In addition, Ralph and Cecile have info. They didn’t find a man matching Cicada’s injuries in their group of names, but they did find three children. There was a pair of twins with a deceased father and one Grace Gibbons. They assume this must Cicada’s daughter.

The doctor from the hospital comes to Orlin’s house to check on him. There’s a picture inside of Grace with who one would assume are her parents. It’s important to note that Orlin is not the man in the photo. She finds Orlin on the floor and wants to help him, but he refuses again and claims that it’s making him stronger. Whether he means the pain or the killing of metas, I’m not totally sure.

Chris Klein who plays Orlin Dwyer, aka Cicada, teased that we would be finding out a lot about who Orlin is and who Grace is to him in the 99th episode which will be airing next week. There’s no telling what we could be finding out. Perhaps Orlin time traveled, as well. Maybe Grace is actually his mother. Or maybe she’s just his niece. Who knows? So many possibilities!

We’ll find out on next week’s episode of The Flash. Watch it on The CW on Tuesday, December 27th, 2018 at 8/7c.

From ‘Bad Ideas’ to Baby Hats: Current ‘Supernatural’ Charity/Fundraising Work

On October 11, fans around the world celebrated Supernatural’s 14th season premiere. After years of stories about the Winchester brothers and their evolving troupe of Team Free Will allies, it is hard to believe that the show almost wasn’t renewed for a second season. Part of what makes Supernatural such a fandom juggernaut are the interactions fans have with the stars of the show, as well as with each other, both online and in person.

One of the best things to come out of these interactions is the impressive amount of charity work and fundraising.

Charities and letter writing campaigns have been a part of fandom at least as far back as the 1960s. With the onset of social media and the growth of conventions over the past ten years, however, fans have been increasingly active in non-profit work. The Supernatural fandom is known for being especially charitable. Supernatural fans identify themselves as “family” (the SPN Family, to be exact), as a nod to the main characters’ focus on family and Bobby Singer’s famous line “Family don’t end with blood.”

When fans gather together in fandom spaces, they are building and nurturing what social scientists call social capital. Social capital refers to the power of groups to generate both norms and values that guide individual behavior and also the power of the relationships created by groups. When fans use fandom networks to support one another in times of crisis, for example, they are leveraging social capital.

Social capital helps both those within and outside of fandom. This is one of the most sociologically interesting parts of the SPN Family’s charitable engagement – it helps not only members of the SPN family, but those outside of the fandom around the world who are in need. Contrary to political scientist Robert Putnam’s worry that citizens were increasingly “Bowling Alone,” fans are showing social scientists how “nerding together” leads to bridging social capital that makes society as a whole stronger.

Jared Padalecki has been very vocal with his Always Keep Fighting (AKF) campaigns, which help with mental illness, helping benefit To Write Love on Her Arms. Jensen Ackles has also done various charity campaigns, including You Are Not Alone, which funded the SPNFamily Crisis Support Network. Misha Collins currently heads Random Acts, a highly respected non-profit organization most often used in the Supernatural fandom to help raise money for multiple causes, including child hunger, homelessness, and disaster relief. Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster have helped A New Leash on Life with their Wayward Campaigns, Rob Benedict has helped The National Stroke Association with his campaigns, and Richard Speight, Jr. and Matt Cohen have helped Feeding America and Random Acts (respectively) with their campaigns. This is only just a small part of what some of the actors and campaigns do. There are many more who are part of the SPNFamily who help all sorts of different causes.

The charity work by the Supernatural team has also inspired the fans to create charitable organizations of their own. Below are some of the ongoing charity and fundraising campaigns in the Supernatural fandom that are helping to both define fandom participation and create a more just and supportive society.

Charities/Campaigns:

The Bad Idea Tour

Date: November 25th, 2018

Actors and friends of ‘Supernatural’ who will be participating in the ‘Bad Ideas’ Tour.

Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Rachel Miner, Rob Benedict, Jason Manns, and Adam Fergus will participate in the Amica Seattle marathon on November 25 to benefit Random Acts as a part of Endure For Kindness. Funds will go to helping alleviate childhood hunger in the poorest and most affected parts of the US and the world. Additionally, the “Bad Idea” crew has pledged to match funds raised up to $100,000.

Each year, Random Acts encourages participants to engage in an intensive, multi-day period of fundraising and charity efforts known as Endure 4 Kindness or E4K. Participants may choose to run a marathon or climb a mountain or knit/crochet/craft for charity. Random Acts encourages creative expression in the endurance event. Proceeds raised via crowdsource or direct donation benefit Random Acts and support ongoing campaigns such as Jacmel Children’s Center and Dreams 2 Acts Nicaragua.

Stands T-Shirt/Merchandise Campaigns

Dates: Ongoing

We may not have gotten the Wayward Sisters spin-off we desperately wanted, but the Wayward Daughters movement lives on in part through Stands’s Wayward Shop. Portions of proceeds from shirt and merchandise purchases benefit a variety of awesome charities including New Leash on Life, Random Acts, and My Hope Chest. At Creation Entertainment‘s Supernatural Denver convention last August, Kim Rhodes shared that formerly incarcerated participants who work with New Leash on Life have only a 19% recidivism rate, as compared to 80% nationally. Rhodes also shared that the first class of fandom-rescued pups, named after our favorite characters, were ready to graduate! The latest campaign, “My Super Power is Compassion”, by Katherine Ramdeen, is raising money for TrapKing, an organization that helps manage feral cat populations.

IMAlive Crisis Hotline

Dates: Ongoing

Perhaps one of the most impressive accomplishments of the SPN Family is the fandom’s role in the creation and staffing of an online crisis hotline. Through t-shirt sales led by Misha Collins, Jensen Ackles, and Jared Padalecki, Random Acts partnered with IMAlive, To Write Love on Her Arms, and the Pop Culture Hero Coalition to fund training for volunteers. Within hours of announcing the call for volunteers, the spots were filled. The hotline continues to support not only fans but anyone in crisis.

Canine Companions for Independence

Five years ago after Rob Benedict’s stroke, Jennifer MacDonald and Sara Pynnonen created the We’re Thankful for Rob Facebook group to help recreate memories for Rob Benedict of TorCon 2013. The group also raises money for Heart and Stroke awareness and prevention, with donations benefiting the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation and the National Stroke Foundation (U.S.). Each year between August and October the group runs its major collection drive but you can still purchase one of their posters through this link. Posters are $15 plus shipping; the total will be added to this year’s donation. Some of the funds also go to researching stroke prevention and treatment. To date, the group has raised approximately $20,000 for the foundations.

SPN Survivors
Dates: Ongoing

SPN Survivors was created four years ago by David and Karla Truxall after the devastating loss of their nephew, Mason, to suicide. The group became a nonprofit organization in 2016 and works to educate and raise awareness about good mental health and suicide prevention at both conventions and in communities. The group participates in suicide prevention walks and events supporting other nonprofits in the mental health community. You can also purchase items included in their Comfort Kit Program from their table at a Creation Supernatural Con or online. In an interview this summer, Co-founder Karla Truxall shared that the organization is working with schools to promote #YouMatter! activities, help prevent bullying and empower kids with healthy self-esteem and self care skills.

DPN Family

Dates: Ongoing
