Five Shows You Should Binge in 2019

0

Welcome to 2019! No matter what your New Year’s resolutions are, chances are you will find yourself binging something within the coming year. Here are our staff’s recommendations.

Sarah’s Picks:

Glow, Netflix

This Netflix original series chronicles the life of a new professional wrestling promotion called the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Most of the women are aspiring actresses or down on their luck and decide to take on this new role. Each episode is full of impactful dialogue, even touching on sensitive subject matters like anxiety, miscarriages, and more. The show is character-rich and entertaining, all set to an 80s soundtrack. The entire show is available on Netflix.

Cast: Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Sydelle Noel, Brittney Young, Marc Maron, Britt Baron, Kate Nash, Gayle Rankin, Kia Stevens, Jackie Tohn, Ellen Wong and Chris Lowell, to name a few.

iZombie, The CW

Rose McIver as Liv in ‘iZombie’ image courtesy of IMDB.

Follow Liv, (Rose McIver) a medical resident with her life together, as an accident transforms her into a… zombie. Now as a zombie, Liv works in a morgue and can still talk and think like a human if she eats brains. It is a little cliché, but there is a catch: she takes on the personality and memories of the person the brain belonged to. This leads to many shenanigans as she works with a detective to solve crimes, pretending to be a psychic. The first four seasons are available on Netflix and season five is set to premiere mid-2019.

Cast: Rose McIver, Rahul Kohli, Malcolm Goodwin, Robert Buckley, David Anders, Aly Michalka, and Bryce Hodgson.

Deb’s Pick:

V-Wars, Netflix

Ian Somerhalder as Dr. Luther Swann in V-Wars. Image courtesy of IMDb.

This Netflix original is based on the anthology series by New York Times best selling author Jonathan Maberry. A mysterious disease is turning people into vampires, and as the disease spreads, the world becomes a battleground between humans and vampires.  Ian Somerhalder stars as Dr. Luther Swann, a physician who must battle his best friend, Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes), who has become the vampire leader. Dr. Swann is on a quest to learn as much as he can about the disease that has turned the world into a war zone in the hopes that he can create a cure to save his friend and the rest of humanity. V-Wars releases on Netflix in early 2019.

Cast: Ian Somerhalder, Adrian Holmes, Jacky Lai, Peter Outerbridge, Laura Vandervoort, Kyle Breitkopf, and Kimberly-Sue Murray.

Kailin’s Pick:

New Amsterdam, NBC

Based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, New Amsterdam is the newest medical drama on NBC. The show follows Max Goodwin, a doctor who becomes the medical director of one of the United States’ oldest public hospitals, New Amsterdam. According to the premise of the show, his main goal is “to reform the neglected facility by tearing up its bureaucracy in order to provide exceptional care to patients.” However, the story takes a turn when Max ends up becoming a patient himself, giving him a new look on the healthcare system through a patient’s perspective. You can catch new episodes Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC.

Cast: Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine, and Anupam Kher.

Emily’s Pick:

Firefly, Facebook Watch

The cast of Firefly. Image courtesy of IMDb.

Taking place nearly 500 years since the Earth was used up, this sci-fi western (yes, you read that correctly) follows nine people trying to survive on the edge of the universe. From Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), to pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburne (Alan Tudyk), to doctor and scientific phenomenon sibling duo Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau), this merry band of bandits gets into hilarious and poignant situations that allow the audience to reflect on happenings today despite the futuristic setting. From the brilliant mind of Joss Whedon, Firefly is just fourteen episodes and a movie long, making it the perfect short show to watch, although be warned: the show may be short, but the obsession is eternal. And, the entire show (as well as Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Angel: The Series) are available to watch for free on Facebook.

Cast: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Ron Glass, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau. Special appearances by Christina Hendricks, Michael Fairman, and Mark Sheppard.

We hope you enjoy our picks for 2019 – let us know in the comments below what you recommend to binge in the coming year.

‘The Wayward Podcast’ Talks Sex

Content warning! This article does discuss the topic mentioned in the headline. If it makes you uncomfortable, do not read further.

This week’s Wayward Podcast has received quite a bit of attention simply for the warnings that Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster were determined to give listeners in regards to the topic – sex. So we will give our own readers the same warning! Be prepared before you listen, because the girls get deep (pun intended).

This is also the first time that artist Scout Villegas (@scoutstiel) has joined the Wayward Podcast team with her fabulous artwork to act as a preview for the podcast. We look forward to seeing more of these wonderful sneak peeks in the weeks to come!

The ‘Wayward Sex Talk’ spans many topics about sex, orgasms, genitalia, likes and dislikes in bed, partners, and more. As they always are, Kim and Bri are candid with listeners about their experiences which makes the potentially uncomfortable subject of conversation all the more relatable and helps to put people at ease. It is not a clinical discussion in any way, with the ladies jumping from tangent to tangent and keeping us on our toes and avidly listening for the next piece of gold to come out of their mouths such as: “Blowjobs are hard!” or “The vagina is a maze!”

Primarily the underlying message for this podcast is to be confident with what you like, learn and know your own body, and do not be ashamed of yourself or your sex life in whatever way that happens for you.

Kim and Bri sign off this podcast with this perfect message: “There should be no shame about having sex and enjoying it, and there should be no shame about not having sex and enjoying that.”

The Wayward Podcast premiers new episodes every Monday. You can listen here on Podbean, or here via iTunes!

Binge This Now: ‘My Dead Ex’ Review

0
Charley (Katherine Hughes) laughs with Ben (Ryan Lee) after his first party. Courtesy IMDB.com

Here is the way it goes in my house: there is television that I watch with my spouse, and there is television that he watches on his own when I am busy. His tastes lean towards the serious and dramatic, or full of gallows humor, so imagine my surprise when he asked if I minded if he watched My Dead Ex without me. “Sure,” I said. “I’m a little busy tonight. I’ll be in the kitchen writing. You go ahead.”

Famous last words.

I could hear the show from the other room, so I picked up on bits and pieces of the dialogue. It was quite witty. I found myself getting up more than once to actually see what was happening on the television, rather than concentrating at on my tasks. By the end of the episode, I was unexpectedly hooked. And I think you will be too.

My Dead Ex starts in high school, where we meet Charley (Katherine Hughes) a teenager with ambitions of being the next Instagram sensation, her hilariously dry gay best friend Wren (Medalion Rahimi) and Ben (Ryan Lee), a boy with the world’s biggest crush on Charley. It is almost cringe-worthy to watch Ben fawn over her, considering she frankly could not be bothered with his affections. You learn through the process of the episode that they actually used to be very close friends as children, and Ben has been convinced she is the only girl for him ever since. This is probably starting to sound like a dozen different high school romance movies you have seen, except then tragedy strikes – Ben dies in a horrible (and morbidly amusing) accident.

At the wake, Charley is almost blase about the event, even going so far as to be excited about giving her number to her actual crush. (Way harsh, kid.) It is all very superficial until Charley puts on a necklace that Ben had given to her when they were kids and boom – he shows up on her doorstep. Somehow the two enchanted necklaces brought him back to life – well, sort of. He’s moving, and sentient, but absolutely undead. And unable to be more than thirty feet apart from Charley, or else he experiences tremendous amounts of pain.

The show continues from there, from trying to track down the necklaces origins, to Ben eventually being discovered, to the hilarity of treating the term “zombie” like it is politically incorrect. But what drew me into this silly show was the chemistry between Hughes and Lee. Even when Charley should be exasperated with Ben, there is a crack of appreciation – no one in her life has ever believed in her like Ben has. They also have that wonderful familiarity with one another that comes from knowing someone most of your life. While Ben is sometimes over eager to impress Charley, it is his frank attitude towards her self deprecation that won him over in my book. Charley’s journey from being extra superficial to the recognition of what is really important about life was also very enriching to watch. There’s also a great subplot about Wren’s crush, and how difficult it is to come out as gay, even as it seems the world is growing more and more accepting.

I won’t spoil the ending, but I absolutely hope they make another season of this show. If you’re looking for a heartwarming and witty romantic comedy, I highly recommend binge watching My Dead Ex right away! You can watch it now on HULU. Check out the trailer below.

“The Giving Back Tour: A ‘Supernatural’ Convention” Announced for 2019

The fans asked and Creation Entertainment delivered!

Though not many details are available just yet, a new “Giving Back Tour” has been added to the upcoming events page on the Creation Entertainment website.

According to the small blurb available, the convention will be taking place in Burbank, CA on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20, 2019. Many Supernatural convention veterans are used to conventions running three days, but at least for Burbank, it looks like this “Giving Back Tour” will be jamming as much fun as possible into two days.

So far the only confirmed talent is the headliner, Misha Collins, but other talent is said to be announced soon. If you’re unfamiliar with the unique and fun-filled events that took place at past “Giving Back Tours” in 2018 like The Charitable Con-Quest and The Creative Quest, you can read about them here to get an idea of what might be in store for fans in 2019.

We look forward to sharing new information about other possible “Giving Back Tours” as it becomes available.

Happy Birthday, Stephen Norton!

Stephen Norton is the drummer for one of our favorite bands, Louden Swain, and today is his birthday! We asked our readers and staff to share a few memories they have with Stephen in honor of his special day.

My favorite memory of Stephen is when I attended the brunch with Louden Swain in Atlanta in January 2018. When Stephen came to our table, we spent a good five minutes just watching a camera he had set up at home to watch his cat Lucky. He was very proud to share Lucky with us and we were very happy to see him!

-Finn (@againsthewave_)

My favorite memory with Stephen would be his reaction to the portrait of him I did for my art class. I sent it to him on Snapchat a little after I had finished it and he said it was very sweet of me to do and saved it to his phone. During Salute to Supernatural: New Jersey in 2018, I had him sign it and he had a huge smile on his face the whole time. He was so nice about the whole thing and it just meant the world to me.

I’ve been waiting for a while now to be able to see Louden Swain live, and at my first show in Jacksonville I was able to get Stephen’s signed drumsticks. This was huge because he means so much to me, he inspired me to pick up and learn an instrument on my own and helped me get through some low moments of my life.

-Eszter E. (@esztererdei_)

My personal interactions with Stephen are unfortunately limited but they still made an impact on me. At my first convention, for my first Swain photo op, my niece and I hugged Billy Moran while the rest of the band was instructed to look bored. They killed it. I had them sign it and Stephen’s laugh made me smile so big. Another favorite moment was having the privilege of informing him that several “Swainers” had raised money for the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of his birthday last year. He did not have to acknowledge it at all but he was truly grateful and appreciative. I am so glad he is a part of Louden Swain, I cannot imagine the band without him.

-Em (@invisible_heir)

I cannot think of a singular standout interaction with Stephen; every time I have talked to him he has been incredibly sweet. During autographs he always asks how I am enjoying the weekend and is genuinely caring. On more than one occasion, he complimented me on my fandom shirt, and it helped me feel more comfortable. I really appreciate him, and what he adds to Louden Swain.

-Sam (@honeybeemish)

I was walking to my car across campus one day after work, and was wearing my Louden Swain shirt. A guy doubled back to chat about them and how I knew them. It ended up being the lead singer from Stephen’s college band, which Stephen told me after I snapchatted him about the whole interaction. ‘Twas the best day I had in a while.

-Eliza (@the_cake_wench)

Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to meet him outside the 2 seconds we get at the autograph line. That is going to change in February when I go to the Meet and Greet in Austin. #soexcited

But, what I love about him is his comedic timing. Whether it’s a convenient lack of a rimshot or popping onstage at just the wrong time, he always makes me laugh.

Also, drummers are truly the unsung heroes of any band. Often hidden in the back behind their cymbals, they are the foundation of every song. If the beat is off, the whole show changes. And Stephen is never off.

-Jennifer

My favorite memory with Stephen was when I sent him a Snapchat of my dog dancing to Louden Swain the morning before the Supernatural convention I went to. He responded back with a crying/laughing emoji. Every time that I have talked to Stephen has been great and he is an awesome person!

-Riley

My favorite memories with Stephen are just hearing him talk about his cats.

-Shannon

At Jaxcon this year, during the Vendor’s Jam, I was basically sitting at their feet while they sang and throughout Stephen kept looking down and just smiling at me; it was such a simple thing but it really meant a lot to me.

-Mandy

My favorite memory of Stephen is when I met him at Jacksonville in Louden Swain’s autograph line. I told them all what a great job they do and he looked up at me and smiled as he nodded and said “Thank you.” I really enjoyed watching him and the rest of Louden Swain perform at Saturday Night Special and getting to see them up close and personal at Vendor Jam. Stephen, Happy Birthday! It was a pleasure to meet you!

-Kailey (@kaileygross)

Happy Birthday, Mr. Stephen Norton. We hope you have a wonderful day filled with friendship and hopefully a little cake.
