‘Weird City’ Episode 1 Review: “The One”

0

Streaming services everywhere are having breakout hits with star-studded casts. YouTube Premium is no different. Their latest release, Weird City, has six episodes jam packed with an impressive cast list: Dylan O’Brien, LeVar Burton, Michael Cera, Laverne Cox, Rosario Dawson, and Ed O’Neill are just a few members of the impressive ensemble. Created by Charlie Sanders and Jordan Peele, the new show does not fall short with talent.

The series is a brilliant take on the classic trope “the haves and have nots.” It is set with a somewhat futuristic quality to it, in a city divided. On one side of a quite literal line are the Haves, the ones who are well off. On the other side are the Have-Nots, the ones struggling.

“The One” starts off with a look at “below the line” that divides them. It is not unlike what we would currently see in impoverished areas, but with unique futuristic touches. My personal favorite: a floating fruit stand! Then we see Stu, played by Dylan O’Brien, running for that line. He has got what I’m sure Apple or Google will eventually develop — a cool little eye thing that is like FitBit and Siri all wrapped up into one device. It talks, it gives info, it counts your steps… what is not to love?

There is humor, definitely directed at our current lifestyles. The rich are tired of truffles and too scared to go below the line to try their food stands. I might have had a massive eye roll right along with Stu, with the flavors and obnoxious sizes of the IPAs, and the fact that lager in a bottle is a thing of the past. (Let us hope that never comes true.) Also, apps are apparently no longer on phones, but reside within our brains. And, money is now credits. Even more unusual, football is called safeball and schools are called awards. Weird City, indeed.

Love is the focus of this episode.  Stu is unlucky in love, and because he grew up Below the Line, he was never assigned a partner. That’s right — folks above the line are assigned matches. Dating is for the poor. Yikes! But since Stu moved above the line after he was 18, he still needs to date.

Cue a dating site called “The One That’s The One.” A site created by scientist Dr. Negari, played by LeVar Burton, it uses both questions and DNA to find your perfect match. It is an awkward process, but Stu goes through with it and meets his match, Burt, played by Ed O’Neill.

Despite the fact neither of them are gay, they are the perfect match. Always late, grew up in the same area… even their favorite restaurant! Dylan O’Brien and Ed O’Neill play it all brilliantly. You know they did not want to be matched, but you root for them anyway. I never knew the perfect couple would be these two fantastic actors, but here we are. Another thing I never knew I needed: Dylan O’Brien, LeVar Burton, and Ed O’Neill all screaming at the top of their lungs at each other out of fright. And then LeVar disappearing like mail through a mail tube. That was comedic gold!

Stu (Dylan O’Brien) jokes around while Burt (Ed O’Neill) laughs. Courtesy of YouTube Premium.

What follows are scenes that are truly magnificent: Stu and Burt hanging out, cuddling, and getting to know each other. Seriously, whoever cast these two as a couple, thank you! We get the oddities of the age difference, too. Like Burt meeting Stu’s parents and getting along with them and talking about things way beyond Stu’s era. Then you have Stu meeting Burt’s kids, who are likewise closer to Stu’s age. They make it work, though.

Without giving too much away, or the future of Stu and Burt’s relationship, it was a brilliant, humorous start to an incredible series. The satirical look at our world is incredibly smart, and it does in fact make you think. Weird City lives up to its name. But there are wise, teachable moments underneath all that weirdness. Like Stu says, “anything, anything, can be overcome with a little bit of courage.”

While you will need YouTube Premium to watch the original series, the first and second episodes (“The One” and “A Family,” respectively) are currently free for all YouTube users. Be sure to check them out!

Shameik Moore, who most recently came to fame for his voice-work for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018), was announced as part of a cast for a Hulu series called Wu-Tang: An American Saga. Joining Moore will be Ashton Sanders (from the critically acclaimed movie Moonlight), Marcus Callender, Siddiq Saunderson, Marcus Callender, Zolee Griggs (known from Ballers), and Erika Alexander (from Get Out).

The Hulu series is produced by Wu-Tang’s own RZA and Method Man, with Chris Robinson (known for his work on Star) as writer and director. It will span over 10 episodes and tell the story of one of the most famous and influential rap crews of the 1990s and early 2000s. It will be set in the early 90s in New York and will focus on the formation and growth of the crew, as well as their struggle in dealing with criminal activity and producing rap music.

Sanders will portray RZA in the series, while Moore will play the role of his best friend, Sha.

The series will not be the first film project for RZA. He acted and produced in the 2012 film Iron Fist and is at work on an upcoming movie called Angel Dust, which will be a horror movie dealing with a serial killer in Staten Island.

A release date for the Hulu series has not yet been announced.

Chris Evans To Star In Novel Adaptation ‘Infinite’

According to reports from Deadline, Chris Evans is currently in negotiations for a role in a movie project called Infinite, which is an adaptation of the novel The Reincarnationist Papers: A Memoir Of Past Lives by D. Eric Maikranz. The movie is a Paramount Pictures project and will be produced by Mark Vahradian, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and John Zaozirny. Rafi Crohn has been tapped as executive producer.

Maikranz’s novel focuses on the character Evan Michaels, who is able to remember all of his past lives and joins a secret society with other individuals who share the same ability. The story is told from Michaels’ perspective who, as he goes further and deeper into the secret society, realizes his fellow organisation members have been influencing historic events for years.

It hasn’t been announced whether Chris Evans will take on the lead role, as negotiations are still going on. However, it would fit in with a number of different projects Evans is set to work on after his (hopefully not actual) end of watch as Captain America with the release of Avengers: Endgame (2019). Like a lot of the actors whose careers have been fueled by the enormous success of the Marvel films, Evans has chosen diverse and unique projects as an actor and as a director, to which this project would definitely add.

New details have emerged about a Breaking Bad movie that is currently in the works. The Hollywood Reporter announced that the movie will be a sequel to the hit television series of the same name and will focus on supporting character “Jesse Pinkman” (Aaron Paul). Paul, who earned three supporting actor Emmy wins for his role as Pinkman, will reprise his role in the film.

Original series creator Vince Gilligan will write, direct, and executive produce the movie. Series collaborators Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein will also co-produce the film.

The television series ended with Paul’s character escaping his kidnappers and driving off into the night. And this movie will follow up with Pinkman’s story and his attempt at freedom.

Interview: Janine Brito Discusses ‘Bubble,’ the Gig Economy, Tweed Lightsabers, and More [EXCLUSIVE]

Janine Brito is a stand up comedian and television writer. In 2009, she won the “SF Women’s Comedy Competition,” and in 2011 was named the “Best Comedian with a Message” by the East Bay Express. She was an on-air correspondent for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell. She currently writes for One Day at a Time, the upcoming animated series Bless the Harts, and the popular scripted podcast Bubble. She sat down to discuss her experience writing on Bubble, surviving the gig economy, and the results are, of course, hilarious!

Nerds and Beyond: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Janine Brito: I’m an IceCube (half-Icelandic, half-Cuban) lesbian. I started out in standup and now am also a writer and actor. I wrote on One Day At a Time on Netflix and am currently working on Bless The Harts, a new animated show coming to Fox this fall. I’m also the proud father of 4 dogs and 3 cats (adoptive father, though my partner and I haven’t sat down and had the official talk with them).

Nerds and Beyond: How did you come to be a part of Bubble?

Janine: I love Jordan Morris, he’s a sweet baby angel man. We met in the comedy world and I’ve done stuff with MaxFun (maximumfun.org), so when he reached out asking me to write for this series, I was onboard before I even finished his email. Then I read it and was REALLY onboard.

Nerds and Beyond: For our readers that are unfamiliar with Bubble, how would you describe it?

Janine: It’s like if Buffy lived in the current “sharing economy,” a.k.a. poverty wages with no benefits that us millennials and Gen Z get to look forward to after college.

Nerds and Beyond: What was the process of writing on a scripted podcast like?

Janine: It was pretty easy; the podcast meant we didn’t have any limits like money or the laws of physics so we were really able to let our freak flags fly.

Nerds and Beyond: There’s a lot of commentary and jokes in the show about gentrified (or gentrifying) “hipster” communities and our gig economy. Was there a scene or moment that resonated the most with you, or that was based on a real experience?

Janine: I was a dog walker for Wag when I first moved to LA. I remember a lot of weeks being touch-and-go when I didn’t get enough money on the app. So I really felt Morgan’s dilemma of not wanting to work for Bubble and, you know, rent (although Wag was a dream because dogs… and not killing creatures for an awful evil monopoly).

Nerds and Beyond: Why do you think horror (both in the existential sense and the monsters that will kill you sense) resonates so strongly in our current social climate?

Janine: I actually HATE horror. I grew up very religious and so the idea of anything supernatural scares the bejeezus out of me. (You can’t fight the devil!) But I love Buffy, Firefly, and Shaun of the Dead. I think because those series are more about the interpersonal relationships that we can all relate to, just against the backdrops of vampires, space, and zombies, and space zombies.

Nerds and Beyond: What are your favorite moments from the first season?

Janine: There was a moment in my episode where I realized we didn’t yet know why Morgan and Annie (who are kind of polar opposites) were still roommates, so I wrote a scene where they really break down why they feel so connected to each other. I loved adding that dynamic to the series because I feel like that’s why we return to so many shows we love, no matter the genre. We just wanna love and be loved, y’all!

Also, Squirmp, forever and always anything Squirmp.

Nerds and Beyond: You also write for One Day at a Time (Netflix) and Bless The Harts (Fox). What were those experiences like?

Janine: There’s actually a lot more crossover than I expected. They’re both shows that focus on families struggling to get by and feature three different generations of women. I also feel very at home in both: the Cuban side of my family helped me understand the Alvarezes and my Icelandic side ended up in rural Alabama so I feel like I know the Harts too.

Nerds and Beyond: How does writing for a sitcom compare to an animated show? And writing for a Netflix show as opposed to a network? How does the process differ?

Janine: Animated’s a little more free than sitcom logistics-wise since, again, we’re less limited by physics. But both shows have the most talented cast and both rooms are full of sweethearts so both are a dream workplace. Because One Day at a Time’s a multi-cam, we get to see how things go over in the live tapings, which really feeds my stand-up itch, but the table reads for Bless The Harts have also been a lot of fun.

Nerds and Beyond: Do you have any upcoming projects that you want to share? Any upcoming stand up specials?

Janine: I’m on Season 2 Episode 1 of 2 Dope Queens, now available On Demand and on HBO Go.

Nerds and Beyond: We have a few nerdy quick questions…. Favorite movie?

Janine: A lot of people who didn’t see it as children say it’s TERRIBLE, but I saw it in my youth and so it forever holds a very very special place in my heart – Goonies.

Nerds and Beyond: Favorite Book?

Janine: Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

Nerds and Beyond: Favorite Band?

Janine: This is a hard one to answer, so I’m going to bend this definition and say most of the VH1 Divas roster: Mariah, Aretha, Cher, Shania, Whitney, Tina Turner, Chaka Kahn, Mary J Blige, Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Miss Patti LaBelle, etc.

Nerds and Beyond: Favorite Word?

Janine: “Cocotazo” – It’s Cuban slang for a smack across the head, not a fun thing to be on the receiving end of but a REALLY fun word to say.

Nerds and Beyond: Finally, we have a tradition at Nerds and Beyond that our last question is always: If you existed as a Jedi in the Star Wars universe, what color would your lightsaber be?

Janine: I know it’s never been seen before but probably tweed? And I’d also only fight to protect my Senior Fathier And Porg Rescue Farm.

You can listen to the entire first season of Bubble on maximumfun.org. You can also watch all three seasons of One Day at a Time on Netflix. Bless the Harts will be airing on Fox.
