Five Times ‘Lucifer’ Broke Into Song

0
Courtesy of FOX/Netflix.

There are so many reasons to love the show Lucifer, such as the well-written and acted characters, the chemistry between the cast, the impressive fight scenes, and the snarky one-liners. One of the other reasons I love this show is that we get to witness Lucifer (Tom Ellis) singing from time to time. Below are my five favorite times this has happened thus far.

1. Season Three, Episode Six – “Vegas With Some Radish”

(Song: Luck Be A Lady)

Lucifer and Ella are in Las Vegas trying to help his ex-wife. In an attempt to flush out her would-be killer, they put on a cabaret number with Lucifer singing center stage and Ella doing her best Vegas showgirl impersonation alongside him.

2. Season Two, Episode One – “Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer”

(Song: All Along The Watchtower)

While we hear Lucifer singing and playing piano, we also get a glimpse of how all of the characters are handling the fallout from the season one finale. Chloe throws away a sample of Lucifer’s blood rather than sending it for testing, Amenadiel tests his powers (and they fail him), and Linda meets Maze at a club even though she now knows that she is a demon. Finally, we are back with Lucifer at the piano. As the song finishes, the elevator opens and a mysterious figure is revealed.

3. Season One, Episode Six – “Favorite Son”

(Song: Sinnerman)

The scene alternates between a storage facility where someone is bringing down a container, and Lux—where Lucifer is playing piano and singing for the crowd. At the storage facility, we find out that the container belongs to Lucifer and a guard is killed after questioning it being moved. At Lux, Lucifer is enjoying himself entertaining his patrons while Maze happily watches him from the bar.

4. Season Three, Episode Seventeen – “Let Pinhead Sing!”

(Song: I Will Survive)

A woman Lucifer is supposed to have on lockdown in his penthouse is instead performing at Lux. Despite Lucifer’s many attempts to get her to stop and return to the safety of his penthouse, she refuses and instead manages to get him to perform a duet with her.

5. Season One, Episode Eleven – “St. Lucifer”

(Song: Devil May Care)

At a charity function, Lucifer breaks into song as his gift to those in attendance—much to Chloe’s annoyance. He makes sure to flirt his way around the room as he sings, until an outburst by a young man stops him.

‘Louden Swain’ Keeps It Weird in Austin

Rob Benedict and Michael Borja © Illy/Super Inspired Photography, Staff Photographer

February 23, 2019 marked the first time Louden Swain played in Austin, Texas. It also marked the first time Michael Borja, and Billy Moran were even in the city, and we had several staff members in attendance! Austin was fortunate enough to not only get one show, but two, complete with a costume change in between (very rock and roll boys)! A few of us (Amanda, Mikayla, Finn, and Brianna) wanted to share a little bit about our experience:

Amanda:

In the past, we have posted articles detailing fan experiences at Louden Swain shows and done write ups about what went on during the night, and one of our writers, Finn, briefly touched on something in their article about the ‘Once Upon a Canyon Night’ show in August of 2018 that I would like to expand on; what makes Louden Swain shows so special for every single person involved.

It all starts outside the venue, while you are waiting in line. Everyone is standing around, chatting with one another, catching up on the goings on of each others lives since the last time they were able to meet up. If you are walking into the night, not knowing what to expect, not knowing many people, or feeling anxious about the night in any way, that will not last long. You will quickly make new friends standing in the line around you, you will hear stories of previous shows (including band mishaps that add a real comedic value to the night), and you will more than likely feel like you have known these people for a long time and feel right at home in the middle of it all. If you are one of the lucky fans that get a VIP ticket, you hang out with the band for a little while before the concert starts, asking questions, taking pictures with guys, and chatting with them for a few moments. Unlike at the Supernatural conventions, where most fans were introduced to the band, you get to hear from each member individually and get a better understanding of who they are as people, each member has a unique sense of humor that blends well with one another. They give hilarious, sometimes off the wall, answers to whatever questions you may have. Then comes the start of the concert and the second the audience spots the guys walk in, the noise level goes up and does not come back down until the guys have disappeared backstage after the show is over. Throughout the night Rob Benedict will keep you laughing with in-song commentary, Mike Borja will make you want to dance right along with him, Stephen Norton will keep the rhythm bouncing, and Billy Moran will warm your heart when he closes his eyes, smiles and sways when the audience takes over singing certain lyrics.

Speaking of fans singing, sometimes Rob will forget to keep up with the lyrics on his iPad and, understandably, trip over a few words here and there and when that happens, one of the most amazing things you, as a fan, will ever witness/be apart of happens; the audience seamlessly takes over singing until he can catch back up. Like Rob said several times during these two Austin shows, we are a family, we have each others backs. That is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have ever been witness to, and it will take a lot for anything else to surpass that feeling.

Mikayla:

If you have never seen Louden Swain in concert, let me tell you, you are missing out! I first discovered Louden Swain at the Supernatural conventions and immediately fell in love. Fast forward two years and when they announced a show in Austin, Texas, it was a no brainer that I would be attending. Seeing them in a con setting versus in an actual concert setting are two completely different atmospheres. At a con, they are putting on a show for the audience that consists of show fans but when they are putting on an actual rock concert for fans of the band, the atmosphere shifts.

Despite both sets starting a little after the scheduled time, the band came on to the stage ready to put on a phenomenal show, and the audience could tell. With Rob being the front man with his insane vocals, Billy being a complete master at guitar shredding, Mike’s incredible skills of bass and keyboard playing at the same time and Stephen tying it all together extraordinarily with the drums, it was no surprise that the audiences were rocking out to every song with the band.

With a song list from eight different albums, both sets played by the band were two entirely different set lists with songs ranging from their new acoustic album ‘Splitting the Seams’ from which they played ‘Amazing’ all the way to their 2001 album Able-Legged Heroes where ‘Prom,’ a Louden Swain classic, was played. Rob said it during the first set but the vibes and atmosphere the band put off really made it seem like we were watching old friends doing what they love and not just a random band we enjoyed. I hope Louden Swain continues to be the absolute rock stars that they are and continues to make music that touches people’s hearts and souls.

Finn:

This was my eighth time seeing Swain live and they never disappoint. I heard 7 songs I had never heard live, which was amazing. I had the best time with friends and the band, and I can’t wait to see them again.

Billy Moran © Illy/Super Inspired Photography, Staff Photographer

Brianna:

This was my first time attending a Louden Swain concert, and all I can say is it was worth the wait! I was absolutely blown away by the amazing show these guys put on. It’s clear that they pour their whole heart into every single song, and feed off the energy of the crowd.

Watching Louden Swain rock out over the course of four hours is something I can only hope every fan gets the chance to witness. Each show was unique (they even changed their shirts!) with zero repeated songs, which was an amazing treat for those of us that attended both shows. They never once lost energy and even when a guitar or two had to be tuned (and made odd noises), we all laughed right along with the band.

It really felt, as Rob said, “like one big family.” I was a casual Louden Swain fan before Austin, Texas, but I am now a Louden Swain fan for life and will make sure to attend as many concerts as I can in the future. If you ever get the chance to go and wonder if you should, the answer is absolutely yes! Thank you Louden Swain for two fantastic shows.

All in all, what we are trying to say is, Louden Swain shows are not just concerts where the band plays the gig, gets paid, and goes home; these shows are about a portion of a very large family getting the opportunity to come together and just be who they are; we just also happen to be hanging out with four of the nicest, most talented musicians out there. There is no judgement, there is no hate, there is nothing but love and pure joy. So to Rob, Billy, Mike, and Stephen, on behalf of Swainers far and wide, we say thank you. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to hang out with you, thank you for being accepting, thank you for playing your music for us, and thank you for creating an atmosphere in which every person feels welcome and loved.

‘American Gods’ Season Two (Spoiler Free) Review: ‘Becoming True Believers’

0

American Gods is finally coming back for season two! Praise be and Hallelujah! It’s been two years since we left Mr Wednesday, played by the incomparable Ian McShane, and Shadow Moon, played by Ricky Whittle, at Easter’s house and the Old and New Gods are preparing for full on war.

There were concerns over whether or not the show would be able to maintain the hypno-neon-dream aesthetic after Bryan Fuller and Michael Green’s departure over creative disputes with Starz and Fremantle about a year after the first season ended but Chris Byrne, who stepped up from second to first unit director and directed the first and final episodes, has kept the beautiful americana acid-trip intact. The show is still visually stunning, with sweeping shots of the pastoral midwest mixed with heady psychedelic god imagery. We also get to see the long anticipated (and real actual place) House on the Rock! It does not disappoint.

Mr Nancy (Orlando Jones). Courtesy of STARZ

The first two episodes also seem to have reigned in, or course corrected, some issues that plagued the first season. First, we get a lot more of Orlando Jones as the smooth-talking story weaver, Mr Nancy. His delivery and overall panache are pitch-perfect. There were only a few scenes with him (like his unforgettable “anger gets shit done” speech on the slavers ship) last season, but based on the first two episodes it seems like he will be more directly tied to the plot and to helping Mr Wednesday and Shadow in season two. The scenes between Jones and McShane’s unflappable Mr Wednesday are rife with banter and pure magic. McShane and Jones have terrific chemistry as they toss barbs and one-liners back and forth, which leads us to the second improvement from last season. These moments of banter provide some much needed levity and joy to what can otherwise feel like a bleak and dour world. The world of American Gods is grim and the first season often felt suffocated by the despair of the crumbling Old Gods. These moments of snark and quippy one-liners (delivered impeccably by Jones) help to provide balance and break the tension, giving the audience a chance to come up for air.

We also, finally, get more of a glimpse into Shadow’s backstory and childhood. One of the struggles of the first season is that Whittle’s Shadow was such a stoic, bland “straight man” character that he had little purpose or internal motivation for the choices he was making. While this is partly because Shadow’s function, from a storytelling perspective, is to be the audience’s cipher – our stand-in for entering into this crazy world of gods and magic and leprechauns, it made him a hard character to want to follow. However, with some much needed backstory, and an important monologue at the end of the first episode, not only do we finally understand who Shadow is a bit more, but we see our listless hero finally find his purpose – he’s become a true believer. It’s extremely satisfying to see Whittles getting to make bold choices informed by his character’s past trauma. Most of the first season it felt like Shadow was permanently numb with shock, but he is finally coming into his own with this leap of faith.

Speaking of stagnating characters (literally a decomposing corpse), Emily Browning’s Laura Moon has found a new purpose as well. The choice in season one to depart from the books and make her not only a cheating spouse, but a cold sociopath meant that in death there was no change for her character. Cold in life and then literally cold in death meant she was flat and shockingly unlovable, even if she did become a badass that could rip people limb from limb. Her sometimes antagonistic, sometimes romantic, (*cough cough* her Coming to America sequence in season one *cough cough*) chemistry with Pablo Schreiber’s Mad Sweeney is great fun to watch, and even if she is still dead, she has some warmth and fire to her now that she has a mission to complete. It will also be interesting to see how her connection to a “spirit-world” might come into play in the coming conflicts.

New Media (Kahyun Kim). Courtesy of STARZ

Additional insight into the workings and motivations of the New Gods crops up in the early episodes of season two. There is great scenery chewing from Crispin Glover’s Mr World and the introduction of an additional New God – Dean Winters as Mr Town. Unfortunately, Gillian Anderson left the show with Fuller and Green, so Media is currently in hiding and reinventing herself. We will miss her David Bowie and Judy Garland homages, but are excited to see what Kahyun Kim (of Disney’s Austin & Ally) will bring to the role as “New Media” and how the show will interpret the presence of social media in this world. She brings some much needed young blood to these New Gods, who in our rapidly changing world can begin  to feel dated. New Media and Technical Boy are now the newest of the new.

The war between the Old Gods and New Gods is ramping up and neither side is wasting time in rallying the troops or planning their attack. The first season could at times be meandering, indulging in world building and general mystique, but now that the world is established the pacing has picked up, the story is moving full steam ahead.

A major theme carry over from the first season, as noted earlier, was Mr Nancy’s line “anger gets shit done” as told to the slaves trapped on the ship to inspire them to rise up in mutiny, Mr Wednesday is now using a similar anger to rouse the Old Gods to stand up and fight. Anger is the motivating factor for Shadow throughout his life (as we learn in his flashbacks) and for many other characters as well, though not always to make the choices that Mr Wednesday would like. (Mr Wednesday, maybe you shouldn’t have run over Easter’s bunnies, just saying.) As often happens, along with anger comes violence. The show has never shied away from a gory action sequence, and if these two episodes are any indication, they won’t be anytime soon. At times heightened to an almost comedic effect, it also feels deeply tied to the mash of American aesthetic that the show has created. After all, what’s more American than the celebration of over the top violence?

We also might have seen the end of the “Coming to America” sequences of season one. As avid readers of the book, these chapters were a highlight. Serving to add a personal touch along with complexity and richness to Gaiman’s sometimes overwhelming world. However, as executed in the show, they were hit and miss. Mr Nancy’s slave ship sequence was epic (sorry to keep bringing it up but it was just so good), and the Leprechaun’s story provided an important parallel to his dynamic with Laura Moon, but others would drag the shows pacing to a grinding halt. Hopefully these sequences are not gone forever but are employed strategically within an episode in a way that keeps the forward momentum they’ve built growing and not slowing.  After all, they did give us Salim and the Jinn who we LOVE.

Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), Laura Moon (Emily Browing). Courtesy of STARZ

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how the fallout of Fuller and Green’s departure will play out over a full season, especially for episodes that Byrne isn’t directing. One of the things that originally drew us into the show, (aside from being huge fans of the books) was the involvement of Bryan Fuller. As huge fans of Pushing Daisies and Hannibal, it is exciting to see how his style meshed with Gaiman’s epic saga. Based solely on the first two episodes, it seems that he and Green’s overall vision for the show remains intact, if perhaps a bit more reigned in.

Hopefully this season will take time to focus on their female (or female presenting) characters. One of the best changes from the book that they made last season was expanding the role of Bilquis. Yetide Badaki is a revelation as the Goddess of Love and Desire, and seeing the potential of her character to take a larger role in the action is frankly, orgasmic. The cast is incredibly diverse, but the major plotline is focused on the journey of two male and/or male presenting characters, Shadow and Mr Wednesday, but that doesn’t negate the desire to see more of the goddesses (old and new) taking on larger and more permanent roles this season.

Overall, this was a very strong start for a second season who’s development was plagued with problems. Audiences who might have been concerned over the trouble leaking out to the press possibly leading to season two being a big mess, let us assuage your fears. Much like our own characters, this season seems to have found a clarity of purpose. Finding a purpose (spiritual or otherwise) provides focus, motivation, and can light an unquenchable fire from within. So strap in because American Gods season two has found it and there is no going back as our gods march to war.

American Gods season two premieres March 10th, 2019 on Starz.

Countdown to ‘Endgame’: Our Favorite Moments From ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’

0

We are only a few short weeks away from the premiere of Avengers: Endgame. And as the release date approaches and we reach the end of this journey, we want to look back on everything that brought us here. The heroes we watched struggle, grow, and save humanity over the last ten years and our favorite moments of their stories. We will be going through each phase in order, covering every movie leading up to April 26.

Courtesy of IMDb

Next up in our series is Captain America: The First Avenger. Starring Chris Evans, this film released in 2011 and introduced us to Steve Rogers, the kid from Brooklyn who would later become the hero known as Captain America.

Here our some of our favorite moments from Captain America: The First Avenger:

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

Okay, I have a lot to say with this movie. Captain America: The First Avenger was my first ever Marvel movie. Do not ask me why (because I grew up on the Marvel comics) but Captain America will always always hold a special place in my heart. I’m also a sucker for historical pieces so basically I was fangirling the entire time I watched this movie (I still do).
I think a big factor in why I am obsessed (yes, I’ll admit it) with this movie is the camaraderie between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. You have these two Brooklyn boys who grow up in The Great Depression and one of them is a little sick boy and the other is his best friend who jumps into fights for him, and you can not help but feel the friendship they have with one another. Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan brought to life this friendship that the audience has really only seen through comics and made it bigger and better. You don’t see two cast members faking it for their jobs, you see two guys who generally love what they do and love being best friends.
My number one favorite moment (because there are a lot…basically the entire movie) is the scene after Steve rescues the men from the 107th and they are in the bar. Bucky is sitting at the bar and Steve asks him “What about you? Are you ready to follow ‘Captain America’ into the jaws of death?”

And Bucky responds “No… That little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. I’m following him.”

Even when everyone was ready to follow Captain America, this small line told Steve that Bucky was confident in who Steve Rogers was as a person before the suit and the serum. Steve and Bucky gave us the first insight of true friendship in the Marvel universe and even now as we’ve watched their friendship go high and low on the screen, they’re still the two boys from Brooklyn who have each others backs until the end of the line. – Mikayla

I really enjoyed this movie even though I wasn’t able to see it in theaters. Chris Evans does Captain America justice because I feel that Evans really worked hard on his character and made everyone fall in love with this super soldier. I love how he stays humble after he is given the serum that makes him into a super soldier, and how he loves to save people. I also loved Bucky Barnes and his friendship with Steve. My heart broke when Steve woke up from the ice after sacrificing himself by plunging his plane into the icy water. He doesn’t understand anything around him after he wakes up in the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.  This movie also helped viewers learn about the the beginning of Hydra’s origins and how Steve becomes The First Avenger. – Kailey

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

When we brainstormed about this series a while ago I warned the other writers that this one will be a novel. I’ll try to keep everything as short as possible, but trying to limit my passion for Captain America is going to be a difficult task.
This is one of the few Marvel films that I haven’t seen in the theater – mainly because my idea about Captain America is that he was a “boring” character with super-strength and his story wouldn’t be interesting. However, I was very wrong about that last assumption, because I think that Captain America is actually one of the most interesting characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is mainly due to the fact that the casting directors picked a person who is undoubtedly perfect for the role. Chris Evans portrays Steve Rogers in every little gesture, facial expression and vocal pitch – and Steve Rogers is what makes the Captain America movies so interesting to watch. In the beginning, his superpower is being good and just – and when he gets the actual and literal power to take action, he does so selflessly and without question and with a little doubt.
Like any other movie, The First Avenger lives from the minor characters and their relationship with the main character, namely James “Bucky” Barnes played by Sebastian Stan and Peggy Carter played by Hayley Atwell. Both of these people bring a depth to Steven Roger’s character that helps the audience understand the struggles righteousness and loyalty bring along. Steve Roger’s will to sacrifice anything to save Bucky, or his will to sacrifice his life and by that miss out on a dance with Peggy show the conflicts within a superhero that is – in my opinion – unmatched in any of the other run-of-the-mill superhero movies.
If I had to pick my favorite scene from the film, I would sit for an hour, staring at a blank document and trying to pick one, and then pick the scene in which Steve rescues Bucky from Zola’s hands. Not only does it show the strength of their relationship, it also shows the lengths to which Steve is willing to go to save his friend, to defeat an enemy and to fight for what is right. – Conny

Courtesy of Marvel Studios

This film is what really got me into the MCU and made me fall in love with superheroes. Captain America is hands down my favorite character in the Marvel Universe, and this film introduced me to not only him, but other characters like Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter that I’ve grown to love over the years. I have so many favorite moments from this film it’s hard to pin down just one. From Bucky saving Steve in that back alley in Brooklyn, to Steve picking up his shield for the first time in Howard Stark’s lab. Seeing this character’s development in not only this film, but in later films has been a journey I’ve enjoyed, and I’ve truly come to love Steve Rogers; watching him go from that little kid from Brooklyn to the Star Spangled Man With a Plan.
Steve Rogers was brave and selfless before and after the serum that turned him into a super soldier. This film was filled with heartwarming and heartbreaking moments – seeing Steve fall for Agent Carter, fight alongside his Howling Commandos, lose his best friend, and crash that plane into the ice saving countless lives.
If I had to pick a single favorite moment from this film, it would be that scene where we see Steve fighting in the alley in Brooklyn after he’s just tried to enlist. He keeps getting knocked down and hit, but he keeps getting back up. And when he picked up that trash can lid (which was an awesome cinematic parallel), and then gets knocked down again, and gets right back up telling his attacker “I can do this all day.” – Kayla

Stay tuned as we look back on all our favorite moments from the Marvel Universe as we anticipate what lies ahead for our heroes in Avengers: Endgame.

“Don’t Give Up On Me” Official Video Released

0

Andy Grammer has released the official music video for his song “Don’t Give Up On Me” for the film Five Feet Apart. The video features Grammer singing with scenes that feature Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson from the film.

The song has a powerful message, one that at times we need to be reminded of: it’s important to not give up on yourself or those around you.

Give it a watch and a listen, the song can be streamed on Spotify and is available for purchase on iTunes.
