Recap: Change is Scary in ‘WandaVision’ Season 1, Episode 6 “All-New Halloween Spooktacular!”

In this week’s WandaVision, Wanda’s world begins crumbling around her as outside forces threaten to upend the fantasy within Westview. Vision starts openly questioning what’s going on as Pietro’s arrival proves to be even more disruptive than initially thought. As Hayward regroups, Monica, Jimmy, and Darcy must decide their next move. But who is really responsible for Westview? And how far will Wanda go to keep her world picture perfect — and save Vision?

Disney+

The episode opens with a credits sequence that pays homage to the classic family sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, with the twins racing around the house in chaos. It’s Halloween, and the boys narrate directly to camera about their plans for the day. Tommy doesn’t have a costume, which he believes makes him the “cool brother” in comparison to Billy. The boys see Pietro still asleep on the couch, and as they debate whether to wake him, Pietro surprises the boys by jumping to his feet and playing with them, using his speed as the boys scream in delight. He’s the “fun uncle” archetype, and as they play Wanda comes downstairs in her Halloween costume (based on the classic Scarlet Witch comic book outfit). Pietro makes a joke about their childhood in Sokovia, and it seems that they remember the events that happened differently.

Disney+

Vision arrives downstairs, also wearing a costume based on comic book Vision attire. Wanda teases him and thanks him for wearing it, and Vision tightly smiles as he says “well, there were no other clothes in my closet.” He shakes it off quickly and jokes that Pietro is great with kids as Pietro starts a burping contest with the twins. Wanda, still thrown off balance, says Pietro is “full of surprises.” Vision tells Wanda he’ll be working with the neighborhood watch tonight, which surprises Wanda since he didn’t tell her. She recovers quickly, telling Vision that since it’s the twins’ first Halloween, he should be there. Pietro jumps in and says he’ll happily act the role of a father figure for the evening. He even supplies a costume for himself and Tommy, which looks like his signature comic ensemble.

Outside Westview, Monica, Jimmy, and Darcy confront Hayward about the missile. Monica points out that they have no idea what will happen both inside and outside of Westview if Wanda is injured or killed. Hayward doesn’t want to appear to “surrender” to Wanda, but Monica correctly notes that antagonizing her without a clear plan is only going to make things worse. Hayward angrily tells Monica that she doesn’t know what it has been like for the last five years and that he knows her history with Carol Danvers, believing she can’t be objective when it comes to “super powered individuals.” Monica tells him he’s using what happened as an excuse to be a coward. Hayward tells her she doesn’t have what it takes to do this job and tells the soldiers to get her, Darcy, and Jimmy off the base. As they walk outside, Jimmy and Monica note that something is off with Hayward. They turn on the guards and steal their weapons as Darcy mutters “why didn’t anyone tell ME the plan?”

Disney+

Back in Westview, the twins are running around trying to gather candy as Pietro yells “unleash hell, demon spawn!” Wanda quizzes Pietro on their childhood, which he calls her out on. He says he gets it since he “looks different,” and Wanda wonders why. Before he gives an answer, the boys reappear, and Pietro runs away to help them steal candy using his powers. In moments, Pietro has stolen all the candy and smashed every pumpkin. Wanda approaches Herb, who’s manning the neighborhood watch, to ask how things are going. He lets slip that Vision isn’t patrolling with them tonight, which confuses Wanda even more. Concerned, Herb asks if there’s anything he can do for her or if there’s “anything you’d like changed.” Wanda chuckles and says no before Herb leaves. Vision walks the streets of Westview alone when he notices something strange. The people in the background are only repeating one action over and over, like an animatronic figure. He stares, but is distracted by children running past and keeps walking.

Wanda, Pietro, and the twins leave the movie theater (which is showing The Incredibles and The Parent Trap) as Wanda notes how Pietro is a bad influence. He notes he’s “just trying to do his part” of being the quirky brother-in-law, stopping just short of saying he’s acting in some way. He says “that’s what you wanted, isn’t it?” She doesn’t answer, instead asking what happened to his accent. He asks what happened to hers, noting that “the details are fuzzy.” But he then states that he remembers dying after getting shot, which is how MCU Pietro died (which is not the same storyline for the version of the character that appears in the X-Men franchise). He also says he’s here because he heard her calling out for him. Just then, Tommy and Billy race up, with Tommy exhibiting super speed powers for the first time. Wanda insists Tommy take his brother with him if he’s going to use super speed and reminds them never to go past Ellis Avenue.

Monica, Jimmy, and Darcy sneak into the control room so Darcy can access Hayward’s devices. They discover that Hayward can see into the boundary and has been tracking Vision. They also note that Hayward can see blips representing people, meaning he knows how many people are in Westview. Jimmy notes that the people on the very edges of the boundary don’t appear to be moving at all. As he notes this, we go to Vision as he sees the motionless people. They’re all dressed for Halloween, but they’re frozen and don’t answer him when he calls out to them.

Disney+

Vision uses his powers to fly above the town, and he sees a lone car with its lights on. He flies to it and sees Agnes dressed as a witch in the front seat, frozen like the others. But when Vision speaks to her, she answers, asking where the town square is and noting she must have taken a wrong turn. She’s expressionless, and Vision touches her head. His powers wake her up, and she gasps. She recognizes him as “one of the Avengers” and asks if he’s here to help her. She asks if she’s dead, and when he asks why she would think that she responds “because you are.” He says he wants to try to contact those outside Westview, but Agnes says that they can’t leave and that Wanda won’t even let the citizens think about leaving. She starts cackling uncontrollably and Vision uses his powers to calm her. She snaps back into character as she drives away, and the camera pans to a street sign saying “Ellis Avenue.” Vision walks beyond it into the field.

Monica prepares to go back inside Westview, but Darcy stops her. She tells Monica that her bloodwork shows that the energy from Westview has already rewritten her cellular makeup twice now and has changed her. Monica says she’s had enough of abnormal cells and says she knows what Wanda’s feeling. Monica won’t stop until she helps her. Darcy says she’ll stay behind until she can breach Hayward’s last firewall. Monica and Jimmy leave, with the three planning to meet up when Darcy finishes.

Disney+

Wanda and Pietro discuss the town, which takes a turn when Pietro asks where Wanda got all the children from, revealing that he understands everything isn’t real. He says he assumed they were sleeping peacefully since there’s “no need to traumatize beyond the occasional holiday episode cameo, right?” She stutters, and he says “Don’t get me wrong, you’ve handled the ethical considerations of this scenario as best you could,” noting that families are together and most of the residents’ underlying personalities are the same. She delicately asks if he thinks it’s “wrong,” but Pietro tells her he’s impressed. He asks her how she did it in a lighthearted manner, but then seriously tells her she can talk to him when she seems confused and hesitates. She looks him in the eye and says she doesn’t know how she did it. She says she only remembers feeling alone and empty. She turns away to wipe away her tears, and when she turns back Pietro has gone gray, with blood and bullet holes where the MCU Pietro had them when he died. She shakes her head and he returns to normal as he asks if she’s okay.

Darcy sees Vision creep towards the edge of the boundary as Hayward gives the order to move out. Vision tries to open the boundary and successfully leaves as the army watches from the outside. Darcy runs from her hiding spaces as Vision begins to emerge. She sees he’s coming apart and rushes towards him to help while Hayward just watches. When Hayward sees Darcy, he stops her from moving closer. Billy hears Vision crying out from inside Westview and can hear Hayward’s voice. He stops his brother, and both run to Wanda to tell her something’s wrong. Darcy is being cuffed as she hears Vision plea for help for the people inside.

He collapses as Wanda asks Billy where Vision is. Pietro says “it’s not like your dead husband can die twice,” and Wanda’s patience runs out. She blasts him across the town square. She turns to Billy and asks him to focus. He can see flashes of what Vision saw, and Wanda stops all the action, freezing everyone in the square. She focuses all her energy and begins expanding the boundary. Jimmy and Monica notice the boundary changing and speed away, barely avoiding it. The new boundary overtakes the camp, turning her into Westview, and the soldier guarding Darcy leaves her behind as they run. All the soldiers and Darcy become part of Westview as Hayward speeds away. No one responds when he calls for them over the walkie-talkie. We see Wanda’s eyes glow as the credits roll.

‘Riverdale’ Recap: Everyone Comes Back to a Changed Town in Season 5, Episode 4 “Chapter Eighty: Purgatorio”

Seven years has passed since the gang graduated high school and a lot has changed. As everyone has their new lives, some great and some not-so-great, Riverdale is under new control, of one Hiram Lodge. When Archie, now a sergeant in the army, is sent back to town on assignment, he teams up with Toni to figure out a plan as she shows him a town that is unrecognizable.

Keep reading for a full recap of the first Riverdale episode post-time jump, “Chapter Eighty: Purgatorio.”

The CW

In the Bulldogs locker room, Archie tells his team he’s not going to lie to them. “What awaits out there is like nothing we’ve ever faced before, but we will not be afraid.” Archie, Reggie and the other Bulldogs get hyped up, and an army commander tells them their mission is to penetrate the enemy’s defenses, retrieve their fallen brother and return safely to base. The Bulldogs get out onto the field, Archie now wearing an army uniform rather than his football one. It’s an all out war on the Riverdale High football field, literally. Archie goes down and in the distance, he can hear the River Vixens cheering for him and the Bulldogs. Archie manages to make his way to a fallen comrade, the entire gang now cheering for him on the sidelines. Hiram, however, aims a gun at him and Archie wakes up.

General Taylor tells Archie, who is in an infirmary, to rise and shine. The caption at the bottom lets viewers know he’s at a VA Hospital in Yonkers, NY, seven years post-graduation. General Taylor asks Archie if he’s ready to go home but Archie tells him he’s ready to get back in the fight. General Taylor says he’s given seven good years to the army. Every man in his unit will attest to that. “They’re alive because of you.” Not all of them, Archie points out. General Taylor tells Archie he’s done some digging. Turns out the RROTC program at Riverdale High has been inactive. He can’t think of anyone more qualified to bring it back to life. With all due respect, Archie didn’t join the army to be a desk jockey. General Taylor tells Archie this is not a request.

The bus drops Archie off and the first place he goes is Pop’s. Tabitha Tate is the first one to greet him, telling him if he’s in the mood for something stronger than coffee to head downstairs. La Bonne Nuit has been rebranded as the Whyte Wyrm. Toni, Fangs, and Sweet Pea are on stage performing, Kevin watching from a table. After the performance, Archie and Toni talk, catching up. Archie notices that Toni is pregnant (Fun fact: They wrote in Vanessa Morgan’s real life pregnancy!), and mentions that she’s still a badass. He asks who’s the dad, if he can ask, and Toni tells him he can, but she’s not going to answer him. It’s a secret, just for now. But she’s glad to see him back in one piece. Toni tells Archie that she and the Serpents own the place now, they put all their cash together and bought it from Hiram. “A girl’s gotta be creative to survive in Riverdale these days.” Archie mentions that the bus ride into town, he can’t explain it but everything feels different, weird. To be honest, it doesn’t even feel like Riverdale anymore. Toni tells him that a lot has changed in the world since they graduated high school. Archie wonders where Pop Tate is and Toni’s confused; isn’t that why he’s there? No, Archie tells her he was reassigned.

The CW

In Quantico, Virgina, Betty îs jogging through the woods and doing some training, wearing an FBI sweater. Later, a woman, Dr. Starling, asks her how the nightmares are, if they’re still keeping her up at night. Betty tells her no, she hasn’t had one in weeks. She’s more than ready to get back to work. She is working, Dr. Starling thought. Betty’s been assigned to cold cases, which means she’s filing all day. Dr. Starling says she’s suffered severe trauma, she is and still only a trainee. “I caught serial killers in high school, Dr. Starling.” Not like The Trash Bag Killer (TBK). “You’d be surprised.”

At home by herself, Betty eats dinner and looks through more files. Betty gets a flashback of being trapped in a hole with no way out, but she continues looking through the files, getting more flashbacks. While sleeping, Betty hears a cat whining and she gets up, wondering where it is. She hears it again and opens the door, finding the cat and severed human limbs, the cat licking the fingers. A chainsaw whirs and Betty looks behind her, seeing a guy with a chainsaw. Betty screams and she wakes up, having fallen asleep while looking through files.

The following day, Dr. Starling asks Betty if she’s had any nightmares and she tells her no, she’s sleeping like a baby. Unless Betty is able to open up to her about her feelings, about what she went through, while she was held captive by TBK, Dr. Starling says she won’t be able to help her. Betty admits when she got to his lair, Teresa was already dead. It wouldn’t have mattered if she had gone in there with an entire S.W.A.T. team. He’d already killed her. Dr. Starling tells her that’s true, but if she had waited for backup, she might not have been captured. And the Trash Bag Killer might not have escaped. “That was a mistake.” Betty regrets that. She spent two weeks in captivity, Dr. Starling asks if she thinks about it a lot since she doesn’t talk about it. Betty thinks about where TBK might be right now, she thinks about the people he might hurt because of her. Betty gets a call from Archie, apologizing. She usually has it turned off. She later tells agent and boyfriend Glen she has to go to Riverdale for a few days and he tells her while she’s there, she can pack up the FBI satellite office. “The one where you and your serial killer brother worked.” Betty will pack up the office, no problem.

The CW

Veronica is thriving in the Upper East Side at a jewelry store, married for a year with a guy named Chadwick. Her marriage is not all great, and he’s mad that she’s not telling him where she’s working, Chad wanting kids but Veronica is not ready just yet. Ever since the accident, a helicopter crash on the way to a vineyard, things have changed. Veronica talks to Hermione, getting advice about what she wants to do. She doesn’t want to have kids just yet, she’s not ready to be a mom. She wants to be the she-wolf of Wall Street. They have time to have a family. Every marriage has its ups and downs and Hermione says that the accident shows her that they don’t necessarily always have time. Veronica and Chad have a date night and somewhat make things right between each other. At work, Veronica gets a call from Archie and she wonders if everything’s okay.

Jughead is trying to work on a story in Alphabet City, New York while at the same time trying to avoid debt collectors. After his first published book, he’s lost his edge. He meets a girl at a bar who was a fan of his book and brings her back to his apartment. In the morning, she admits it was a ploy to get him to read her book and give it to his agent. Debt collectors come and when she gets them to leave, Jughead reads her book as part of the deal. But before he can do so, he gets a call from Archie.

At the Whyte Wyrm, Archie sits down with Toni and the Serpents, and Kevin, catching up with them. Toni had a job lined up after graduation with Riverdale Social Services but they shut down, and Riverdale High needed a new guidance counselor, so Toni’s the new Mrs. Burble. Kevin is the drama teacher at the high school. He and Fangs stayed boyfriends, and now they live together in Riverdale, with Toni in an apartment. Sweet Pea mostly held down the fort while the others were gone. And then when Toni got back, they decided to revive the Serpents under her leadership. She was crowned the Serpent Queen. The Serpents drive trucks to make cash. Meanwhile, Toni and Cheryl broke up after graduation (RIP, Choni). After Toni got back from Highsmith, she went to go check on her a couple times. And the last time she went, recently, she wasn’t Thornhill’s only visitor. Hiram was there with his new righthand man, Reggie.

The CW

Soon it’s just Archie and Toni and Archie brings up the fact that earlier she said the town had changed. He’s probably going to regret this but he wonders if she can tell him how. Toni thinks it might be better if she shows him. Archie tells Toni that he’s crashing at the El Royale since his mom’s renting out their house. “The renters.” Toni says she’ll pick him up at the gym. Toni leaves and Archie stays at the table to make a few phone calls.

Later, Toni picks up Archie at the El Royale, which is like a war zone now. “Well, wait till you see the rest of the town.” Getting on her motorcycle, Toni shows Archie around town, the funding being completely stripped by Hiram Lodge. The fire department is gone, the sheriff’s office is down to one man, Kevin’s dad. People are busy fending for themselves, the town’s lawless now. Whoever could afford to leave are gone. Only the people who are too poor, too proud to move on are still there. Toni takes Archie to Sketch Alley, which is now known as Skid Row, rabid dogs, people without homes. She then takes him to a bus stop, the fifth one that’s been trashed, melted. “Nowadays, there’s always a fire burning in Riverdale.” Buses don’t pass by town anymore, sometimes Toni’s trucks do, but only if they have to, and rarely at night. Bad things happen after dark. They call the road “The Lonely Highway.”

Archie wonders what Hiram Lodge has to gain and Toni shows him a construction sight with a SoDale sign. It’s not SoDale proper. This is where Hiram is building a turnpike that leads to SoDale about half a mile due east. He’s catering to the rich folk who can commute into the city. “So he’s strangling Riverdale to boost SoDale.” And their kids will go to SoDale High, Archie assumes. Stonewall Prep, actually. That place is the same, except for the fact that Hiram bought himself a seat on the board. And so the nightmare continues. There’s one more place Toni thinks Archie should see on the tour, but he’s going to have to brace himself. They get to Archie’s house, which has now been taken over by The Ghoulies. Before knocking some heads in, Archie asks Toni if they can go back to Pop’s, see if any of them actually came.

Archie and Toni get to Pop’s, being greeted by Pop Tate who nods his head over to a booth where Jughead, Betty, and Veronica are sitting. The two go over to the booth and Archie tells the others that Toni gave him a tour of Riverdale and it’s a hellscape. He knows he called them there for Pop’s retirement party but they have a much bigger agenda now. Riverdale’s dying. “And we might be the only people who can save it.” Meanwhile, as Tabitha gives a takeout order to a customer, she asks the girl, Squeaky, if she’s sure she can’t convince her to stay. She’ll give her more shifts if it’ll help. Squeaky appreciates it but Riverdale is done with her.  And she is done with Riverdale. Tabitha tells her to take care of herself and Squeaky leaves. Squeaky, whose real name is Lynette Fields, came to Riverdale two years ago for a fresh start that never happened. Now, she’s 21 and it’s time to go. She spots a truck on The Lonely Highway and signals it to stop, hitchhiking, hoping things would be better in San Francisco. “Unfortunately for Lynette, she’ll never make it to California.”

The Devil’s in the Details — How Mephisto & His Otherworldly Deal May Have Snuck Into Episode 6 of ‘WandaVision’

From the very first episodes of Disney+’s WandaVision, one of the main questions has been: who is the villain? So many theories and possibilities have been tossed around, one even being Wanda herself, but the most popular pick for WandaVision‘s big bad has been the demon, Mephisto.

With the defeat of Thanos finally complete at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel is no doubt looking for the next big, big bad of Phase 4 and possibly beyond, and Mephisto certainly fits that bill. Marvel’s version of the devil himself, Mephisto has an arsenal of deadly powers at his disposal, ones that would give the new magic-wielding veterans of the Avengers, such as Dr. Strange and Wanda Maximoff, a run for their money.

Marvel

Mephisto has been mentioned and hinted at a fair bit throughout WandaVision thus far, with the most recent coming in episode 6.

The most obvious comes from Pietro (who is an entirely different anomaly). As Tommy and Billy head out to start their trick-or-treating adventure, Pietro calls out, “Unleash Hell, demon spawn!” after them, and well, that’s accurate. Billy and Tommy are demon spawn. In the original comics Billy and Tommy are created both with Wanda’s powers and two shards of Mephisto’s soul that Wanda unknowingly pulled. While the boys meet a very quick and untimely demise in West Coast Avengers at the hand of their … father? … before returning years later as Wiccan and Speed, the MCU very well could be skipping that aspect of the story and keeping the boys as they are.

The twins are impervious to Wanda’s powers so there’s something else at work there, and the boys being half Mephisto would certainly be a good reason for it. Wiccan and Speed also don’t possess the ability to age themselves, but WandaVision‘s Billy and Tommy do. This level of magic is certainly on par with Mephisto.

One of Mephisto’s power is the art of the magical deal, and he favors very powerful beings to make them with. Who’s more powerful than Wanda Maximoff? We know Wanda has been through more trauma than any one person should have to shoulder, especially within the last few years and the death of Vision and Pietro. If anyone was going to make a deal for anything to ease her suffering, it’s her.

Marvel/Disney+

In the Malcolm in the Middle themed WandaVision opening credits, Vision is seen reading the newspaper, and the front page may show yet another sign that Mephisto is involved, and that Wanda made a deal. The front page reads “[other?]worldly deals!” with a television from Westview Appliances. Subtle, but aren’t all good things in Marvel subtle?

Marvel/Disney+

Also in the opening credits is a very strange drawing on the fridge with not four, but five family members. And one of those family members looks a tad … fiery. The placement is also interesting, with the unknown fifth (demonic) member next to one twin while Wanda is beside the other. (Sparky is also beside Vision, RIP Sparky).

We can’t leave this without also mentioning this was episode 6, do with that what you will.

The first six episodes of WandaVision are currently streaming on Disney+.

Bonus

Marvel/Disney+

When watching the opening credits, Pietro is the only person to get “As Himself” added after his name. Suspicious both because why wouldn’t he be himself, and adding those letters makes it possible to spell out Mephisto …

New AR Experience “For All Mankind: Time Capsule” Now Available

Get ready to step into the world of Apple TV+’s For All Mankind in a new augmented reality experience that brings the show right into the comfort of your home.

“For All Mankind: Time Capsule” is a new app that allows users to immerse themselves in the alternate history world of For All Mankind. This new experience brings some of the technological advances present in the show into a clearer light, allowing users to gain the full effect they’re unable to solely through the TV series.

In the app, users will see and interact with each object, every one telling its own story. Read D-mail messages on an Apple II between Danny and his friend Kelly that contain life-changing secrets. Use the same computer to play “Crater Quest.” Users can also find a mix-tape that shares the origin story of young love. Devices with a LiDAR scanner — including iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPad Pro — will allow users to use a slide projector showing photos of Danny and family photos of the Stevens, projected directly onto your wall space of choice. Other seemingly mundane objects will also shed light on important events and what’s to come in season 2.

About the game, Ron Moore, creator and executive producer of For All Mankind, said:

“I was intrigued from the very beginning at the idea that we could use AR to immerse the audience in the alternate history aspect of the series, explaining and illustrating some of the historical events and technological advances that are implied in the show but which we never had a chance to fully present. Using this technology allows the audience to immerse themselves into the series by interacting with objects, people and media in an impactful and meaningful way that will bring them even closer to world we’ve created.”

Set in an alternate 1969, For All Mankind explores what the world would be like if the global space race never ended — one where the Soviet Union made it to the moon before the United States. The series was created by Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi, and Matt Wolpert. All of season 1 is available to watch on Apple TV+, with season 2 arriving globally on Friday, February 19, releasing episodes weekly.

“For All Mankind: Time Capsule” is available for download now in the App Store.
