Starting this week off a little different, Mike Shinoda began by doing an art stream on Monday, taking fan requests and chatting with fans about upcoming projects. On Tuesday, Shinoda introduced the first track of the week, “Just A Dream,” by singer and Twitch streamer Bella Goldwin. As usual, Shinoda began the production session by playing the original track submitted by the artist, which in this case was a piano track and a vocal track with a few effects.
The first thing Shinoda did when starting to work on this new track was to take off the effects Goldwin had on her vocals before adding just a bit of autotune. Then, Shinoda decided to experiment with adding his own effects to the vocals by using a vocal assistant program called Nector, which takes a vocal, analyzes it, and recommends a good chain of effects for it. After running Nector, he chose to remove the program’s reverb, put on the De Esser, and tweak the EQ.
“I don’t have a lot of experience yet getting other people’s vocals just right. So let’s do this little cheat… Nector will analyze the vocal for you and set up a starting point of EQ and compression and things … just takes about 30 seconds …”
Moving on from the vocals, Shinoda focused on populating the track with more instruments. Wanting to add drums, Shinoda ran a poll for viewers to vote for either a fast or slow drum beat, with viewers choosing a slow beat. Shinoda then spent the final portion of the live stream adding bass, live guitar, Ebow, and other unique sounds and effects.

After watching the first production session on this track, Goldwin recorded new background vocals and sent them to Shinoda. The next day, Shinoda incorporated these new background vocals into the song, using them to create harmonies. He then worked on the reverb for these new vocals, increasing the mix, high cut, and changing the decay in order to help the lead vocal and background vocals blend together. Wrapping up the track, Shinoda then returned to a track from a previous production session, “Crazy,” by Sam Champagne and Amber Lee, which was initially featured on Shinoda’s Twitch channel last week.
“I’m going to put a very short reverb on them [background vocals] … see listen without it [reverb], its right in the middle and it’s gonna get mixed up with the lead vocal. They’re gonna sit on top of each other in space, so let’s put the reverb back on and push it [background vocals] way back in space.”
Bella Goldwin is a singer, songwriter, producer, and artist based in Canada, who first started exploring music at the age of four at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She began with learning the piano and violin, then experimented with record production at age twelve, and later added the cello, guitar, and ukulele to her assortment of instruments. She created a Youtube channel in 2015, where she demonstrated her impressive wide range of ability by doing not only vocal covers of popular songs, but also incorporating the cello, violin, and ukulele.
Goldwin has also released original music, available on both Spotify and Apple Music, with one album under her belt so far titled “In the Stars” — released in 2017. She has also released multiple singles such as “Can’t Forget” in 2016 and “Blue” in 2019, as well as several EPs, the most recent being “Mindscapes” in 2021. Goldwin has collaborated multiple times with other artists such as Kenneth Cullens and Daniels Jack, even releasing a four-track EP with Cullens titled “Road to War” in 2018. Goldwin also has a Twitch channel and currently streams live Monday through Thursday, creating art and playing games, but mainly taking fan requests to play cover songs as well as her own original music.

Sanjena Sathian’s upcoming novel Gold Diggers is getting the television treatment! Deadline has announced that Mindy Kaling’s production company, Kaling International, will adapt the book.
Kaling will executive produce the series, with Sathian co-writing. There’s no official word yet on which network or streamer the show will release on. However, the adaptation comes as part of Kaling’s overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.
According to Penguin Random House, Gold Diggers follows:
“A floundering second-generation teenager growing up in the Bush-era Atlanta suburbs, Neil Narayan, [who] is authentic, funny, and smart. He just doesn’t share the same drive as everyone around him. His perfect older sister is headed to Duke. His parents’ expectations for him are just as high. He tries to want this version of success, but mostly, Neil just wants his neighbor across the cul-de-sac, Anita Dayal.
But Anita has a secret: she and her mother Anjali have been brewing an ancient alchemical potion from stolen gold that harnesses the ambition of the jewelry’s original owner. Anjali’s own mother in Bombay didn’t waste the precious potion on her daughter, favoring her sons instead. Anita, on the other hand, just needs a little boost to get into Harvard. But when Neil–who needs a whole lot more–joins in the plot, events spiral into a tragedy that rips their community apart.
Ten years later, Neil is an oft-stoned Berkeley history grad student studying the California gold rush. His high school cohort has migrated to Silicon Valley, where he reunites with Anita and resurrects their old habit of gold theft–only now, the stakes are higher. Anita’s mother is in trouble, and only gold can save her. Anita and Neil must pull off one last heist.”
Gold Diggers will release on April 6. Pre-order your copy here.

Both women find their moral boundaries tested as they spend more time with the couple, and it threatens to shatter their bond.
The series will feature Lenny Abrahamson returning as the director alongside Leanne Welham, with Normal People writer Alice Birch teaming up with Mark O’Halloran, Meadhbh McHugh, and Susan Soon He Stanton. The BBC/Hulu coproduction will premiere in 2022 and will again be filmed in Dublin, Ireland, like much of Normal People.
We are almost at the halfway mark of the first season of Resident Alien, as fans hope for a second season – and more.
Last week’s aptly titled episode, “Secrets,” gave viewers some subtle and not so subtle hints at some of the hidden mysteries found in Patience, Colorado. We also saw a flashback to the night that Sam (Jan Bos) and Asta (Sara Tomko) brought her baby to the adoptive family at a familiar house. Not to mention Harry Vanderspeigle (Alan Tudyk) now has a dead body in a deep freezer in his basement that happens to look identical to himself. Oh, and remember the man and woman who saw the dead body floating in the air? Well, they made another appearance last week as well. What are they up to?
There will be spoilers beyond this point.
It appears the longer Harry is on Earth and in human form, the more he gets human qualities, as shown during the opening song number set to the Cheers theme song. He has been feeling emotions, sleeping, and dreams now, too. Not to mention that later in the episode, after attempting and experiencing his first kiss with D’arcy (Alice Wetterlund), his body also reacts to the kiss making Harry think that his penis is in rigor mortis and dying, but it was his first erection.
There are quite a few awkward moments like this during “Birds of a Feather” between co-workers, friends, and family. And shockingly, they all do not involve Harry.
SYFY
To help Max (Judah Prehn) get over the obsession that Harry is an alien, the Mayor invites Harry over for supper. Not wanting to go, he goes over to the table where Asta and D’arcy are sitting and wants her to go with him. Asta already has plans and suggests that he take D’arcy. When they show up, Kate (Meredith Garretson) and Ben (Levi Fiehler) are surprised that he brought someone. Oddly throughout the dinner, Max is nice to Harry, even hugging him. But the awkwardness of the night comes from Kate finding out about D’arcy and her husband’s past. As D’arcy indulges in the wine, more comes out. The fact that she and Ben were friends, he was her first kiss in grade five, and then the pair dated as teenagers.
If you wonder why Max is being so friendly to Harry and not wanting him to leave, it is because he has a plan along with his new friend Sahar (Gracelyn Awad Rinke). While everyone is inside, Sahar searched Harry’s truck and steals his keys to get a copy made. Harry thinks that Max likes him, but little does he know it was all a ploy so they can get the keys to break into his cabin.
A man and woman are getting gas for their RV office when the guy mentions how killing that guy from the bar was not part of their orders. The woman notes that they are to deliver the alien to the General, and she will eliminate anyone who gets in her way. The best part of this is when they are talking and saying that the alien would not just appear, you can see Harry at the same gas station as them.
The next day Asta, Harry, and her dad Dan (Gary Farmer) go for a family member’s birthday. Harry is there to give the injection to her grandmother. When they first arrive, Harry sees the large family and how warm and welcoming they are towards him and honestly seems happy. After giving her grandmother the shots, Asta is holding a baby and gets the question of when she will have one. Harry says that she already has one, and her name is Jay (Kaylayla Raine). Everyone is taken aback as Asta runs out of the room. Asta later has a touching heart to heart with Dan, “Even when we are not okay, we will always be okay.”
SYFY
Outside, Harry sees the guys playing basketball. The ball rolls over to him, and he takes a three-point shot and makes the basket, impressing them. Harry accepts their invitation and plays basketball with them. Well… tries to. He has no idea of the rules or what he is doing. It is hilarious to watch, though. As he gets more physically active and out of breath, he thinks he is dying and goes to lay down in the grass, staring up at the night sky. A few minutes later, Asta lays down beside him. He apologizes to her, and they have a moment where Harry lets his guard down, saying that he is tired and misses his home. (Go on a tangent with me for a moment. If he were on a mission, the other aliens would obviously know about it, right?) Do they think he is dead, or are they looking for him? He then confides in Asta, saying that he had a wife who died.
Sahar and Max ride their bikes out to Harry and begin their search of his cabin. They go to the basement and find the map Harry uses to search for the parts to his ship and device. Max calls Sahar over to the floating Apple, and she touches it, which causes an energy force to fling them across the room.
SYFY
When Harry gets home and finds their bikes, he goes to the basement to search for them. he finds them unconscious and checks to see if they are alive. With a disappointed look on his face, he says they are, in fact, alive. He puts them each in a large duffle bag only to discover a woman in his kitchen when bringing them upstairs. When he asks how she got in, she replies, “well, I am still your wife,” causing Harry to drop the duffle bags to the floor that the kids are in.
See you for next week’s episode of Resident Alien on SYFY at 10 p.m. ET.
“The Drowned Woman” was once meant to be the season 1 finale of Nancy Drew, and it’s clear from a plot perspective why that’s the case: it ties up the Aglaeca mystery, and it’s an emotionally satisfying episode that provides new ways for mysteries to find Nancy and her friends. It’s also the series’ best episode so far, delivering on the bonds between the main characters and giving viewers some of the best horror sequences Nancy Drew has attempted thus far. Written by creators Noga Landau and Melinda Tsu Taylor and directed by series veteran Larry Teng, “The Drowned Woman” gives the Drew Crew new creative direction while staying true to the relationships and characters we love.
The CW.
As the episode opens, Nancy and the crew have realized that the sand from each of their portents hold the key to killing the Aglaeca since each one represents how she died. Nancy knows how to get the Aglaeca to fall into their trap: the crew must use themselves as bait. With 24 hours left, they have very few options. But their hopes shatter when Bess reveals she threw out Nancy’s seaweed portent with sand on it, leading George to need to search in her own house. But George instead ends up spending time with her giggly sisters, who have no idea what’s coming. It’s a sweet moment between them despite the tension, and it’s even more clear what the stakes are.
The CW.
Ace is on a message board seeing photos of AJ Crane’s death. He and Nick realize that the Aglaeca can only kill one of them at once, so in Nick’s words, “we have five shots to take her out … and one of us has to be first.” No one in the crew has any of the sand, and the tension explodes, all of them fighting by pulling out everyone’s worst insecurities and traits. The fear is palpable, and the entire cast does excellent work throughout the scene as long-forgotten quarrels take center stage. It all centers on Nancy and her part in the curse, and Nancy tells them she will fix it. Nancy scoffs, saying, “Look at us, the one moment we’re all supposed to be working together, this is what we do” before storming off.
Carson and Ryan are tailing Nancy as the two have a heart to heart. Carson says Ryan could reinvent himself and be a father to Nancy despite his own father’s weaknesses, but Ryan is scared to lose his comfortable life by trying to go against his father. Nancy goes to Hannah to see if other Aglaeca victims have portent sand they could use. Hannah tries, but she tells Nancy that the cursed objects she does have locked away would do more harm than good. Nancy suddenly has a realization as she sees Ryan’s car outside (smooth move, dads). She remembers that she left some sand in Ryan’s car and goes into his truck to get it from his vacuum. Apparently Ryan cleans his car every day, a fact that surprises Nancy and leads to a hilarious exchange between Carson and Ryan over a DustBuster. She leaves each of the crew the sand with the voice message to pretend to give up to summon the Aglaeca. Whoever she comes for first will have to take her out and weaken her for the others to have a chance. The ominous message concludes with the not at all concerning “don’t miss.” As each of the crew go to the site of their deaths, they contemplate what’s about to happen.
Nick and George sit in his truck and get a call from Bess, who is desperate for contact. Soon they all end up on a conference call, not wanting to be alone. Bess proposes they tie up their loose ends together. Ace reveals the reason he hacked into the federal database: to get the number of someone in Witness Protection (but won’t say who … interesting). Bess lists off the many small, shiny items she pickpocketed from the Drew Crew. Nick says he still hasn’t done the one thing Tiffany asked: to use her information to take down the Hudsons. He just wanted to move on with his life. Ace tells him that the information is useless without an insider, and Nick jokingly asks for Nancy’s permission since she’s technically a Hudson. George bluntly (and perhaps not truthfully) says she has no regrets and asks for Nancy’s. Nancy cries as she says she most regrets hurting her friends, even as they reassure her. Suddenly they all hear the Aglaeca singing as Nancy is pushed over the cliff, screaming for someone to help her.
As Nancy dangles, the rest of the crew start seeing their portents come true. The Aglaeca lands on George and Nick’s car, and they realize they’re first. In a terrifying sequence, the two desperately try to see where she is as the car fills with water. Nick opens the door in the roof and yanks George out, averting death for now as the sand does its job and weakens the Aglaeca. The portents disappear, and Nick says, “she’s gone” as all the water pours from Nick’s car. But Nancy is still dangling. She hears Carson whispering to her as he did when she was a baby on the same cliff, telling her to “just hold on” (no, YOU’RE crying). Using the memory as strength, she pulls herself back up the cliff face and over the ledge. The group meets up back at The Claw, where they start to celebrate until the Aglaeca sends another portent: everyone dead in The Claw at midnight. They didn’t kill her; they just angered her. With just three hours left, even Nancy is at a loss for how to stop what’s coming.
Bess goes to drive George home, wanting her to spend her last hours with her family. But George reveals that she thinks she’d ruin everything if she went home, in a heartbreaking monologue about what her sisters would be doing without her right now. George offers to take Bess to the Marvin estate for her family, but Bess says she’s already with her family. Ace finally calls the mysterious number – and he leaves a message for the long lost brother he has never met. Nick goes to Ryan and gives him the USB drive from Tiffany. He lays it all out, knowing that Ryan is the only one who can help. Nick says Nancy will never let him be a father to her unless he proves he’s worthy, and this is how he can do it. Nick subtly hints that after tonight, Ryan will feel differently about helping.
The CW.
Nancy goes home to Carson. She sobs as she tells the story of one of her best memories from childhood, and she’s asks him to pretend everything’s okay. He’s terrified, not knowing what’s going on, and he simply says, “you want your dad back. The one who raised you. The one you could trust.” He tells her he has loved her from the moment Lucy placed her in his arms. Everything else might have been a lie, but that love never was. He says “it lives in us forever.” This sparks something in Nancy about the Aglaeca. She says, “I love you too, Dad” before hugging Carson and leaving. In a show with many strong performers, scenes between Kennedy McMann and Scott Wolf are consistently the strongest, and this moment once again proves it as Nancy opening herself to love once again helps her find her way.
The CW.
Nancy realizes the sand represents the trauma Odette went through, which is why it made her stronger and angrier. Nancy believes they can appeal to the human inside the Aglaeca and remind her who she used to be. Nancy gets the letters Odette wrote to her love before her death, believing maybe this love will save them. They keep searching and memorizing passages, but soon the Aglaeca makes her entrance.
The CW.
Nancy frantically starts reading from the letters as the crew joins in. But the Aglaeca continues, shrieking. Nancy and the others try saying the letters as they remember them, and it begins to work. The lights flicker, and Odette emerges. The group tells her she is human and she is not forgotten; in fact, she is loved. In a flash, she disappears, and the friends realize it’s past midnight and rejoice. But then they find George stabbed on the floor, gasping for air: the only one of the friends who also had a blood curse on her.
Nick sobs as he holds George, who whispers, “I love you” as she stops breathing. She’s gone. Nancy stands, and with tears streaming down her face she says, “I won’t let this happen to her” as she leaves. Nick, heartbroken, screams “I got her” over and over when Ace tries to help him, holding George in his arms. Nancy remembers Hannah has a shroud used to revive the dead, and ignoring Hannah’s warning about the cursed objects, she picks the lock at the historical society to find it. In anger and fear she takes the shroud, even as Hannah tells her she doesn’t know what the shroud will do or take from her. Nancy just can’t lose George. She runs to The Claw and throws the shroud on George as she whispers “please.” George gasps back to life as the friends sob. They’re relieved, but as they all look at each other it’s clear they know this isn’t the end.
The CW.
The group sits outside together celebrating the end of all the curses. George goes inside to get more cider and when she does, Odette watches her in the mirror. As a creepy cover of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” plays, Nancy feels a breeze hit her. At the historical society building, all of the lockboxes holding the cursed items open at once, releasing their contents. Turning straight to camera, Nancy says, “did you hear that?” as the screen goes black.
Nancy Drew airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
