‘Bridgerton’ Renewed for Seasons 3 & 4!

Netflix has renewed its sensational, groundbreaking series Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4!

Bridgerton took the world by storm in late 2020, becoming the most-watched original series on the streaming platform. Viewers were swept away by the stunning performances and set, and now we can rejoice that we get at least three more seasons to follow three more of the Bridgerton siblings as they look for love.

The show is based on the book series, The Bridgerton Series, by Julia Quinn. Season 1 followed the eldest sister, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), as she found love with the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) as told in the first novel of the series, The Duke and I.

Season 2 has already been confirmed to center around the eldest Bridgerton brother, Anthony, and Kate Sharma as based on the second novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me.

Following this trend, seasons 3 and 4 would follow their respective novels, An Offer From a Gentleman and Romancing Mister Bridgerton, each following the other two of-age Bridgerton brothers, Benedict and Colin.

Filming for season 2 is underway in London, and no, Regé-Jean Page’s Simon Basset will not be appearing in season 2. But we can look forward to some timely pop-ins and advice from his wife, Daphne, to help her brother and his courting along the way!

Book Review: ‘Malice’ Is a Dark and Beautiful Love Story Worth Savoring

0

The latest trend in fairy tale retellings is to take the presumed villain of a story and make them the tragic hero instead. Books like The Witch’s Heart and films like Maleficent or Cruella ask audiences to view those considered evil in a new light. Malice asks the same of its readers, but instead of fleshing out the backstory of an iconic villain, author Heather Walter chooses to create an entirely new protagonist instead in her dark fantasy novel, effortlessly blending elements from numerous fairy tales to create an engrossing novel sure to have fans excited for more.

Malice follows the story of Alyce, a Grace in the kingdom of Briar. Graces possess magical gifts and work for the nobility in Briar, creating elixirs to maintain beauty or create pretty illusions. Alyce has never been like the other Graces due to her Vila blood, for which she was nearly murdered as a child before it was determined her magic could be useful. Alyce’s gift is different due to her dark magic, which also makes her the focus of the kingdom’s scorn. She’s the Dark Grace, forced to create curses or face death at the hands of the rulers of Briar. But as she begins to seek out the source of her powers, she learns there’s more to Briar – and to her history – then she might have imagined.

But Malice is not just about Alyce’s search for who she really is. It’s also a love story. After a chance encounter at a ball, Alyce finds herself falling for Princess Aurora, the last heir of Briar doomed to die in a year if she cannot find her true love and break the curse on her crown with a kiss. At first glance, Aurora appears to be everything Alyce is not: beautiful, kind, the lightness in Briar. But there’s more to the princess than meets the eye, and as the two bond, Alyce comes closer and closer to believing that maybe she’s not the monster she was always told she was.

From the start, Malice reels the reader in with its characters and setting. While the book is largely based on the tale of Sleeping Beauty, Walter borrows from many other fairy tales like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast, which lulls the reader with familiarity before twisting the story in unexpected ways. Alyce is a heroine worth rooting for, having endured hatred despite her attempts to fit in with the rest of Briar. She is a smart and interesting narrator, and the choice to tell her story entirely through her eyes is the correct one. Not only does the reader not see the many plot twists coming, but we are also able to feel her emotions more acutely as she slowly becomes the powerful woman she deserves to be. She’s not evil, but she’s not entirely good either, and her flaws make her more interesting than a standard YA fantasy heroine (if the label of “heroine” even fits her at all).

Malice is the first in a planned duology, and the cliffhanger ending will certainly have readers clamoring for the conclusion of Alyce’s tale. In Malice, Heather Walter combines intricate world building with a beautiful love story to create a mesmerizing and unique new fantasy.

Malice is available now wherever books are sold.

Book Review: ‘Near the Bone’ by Christina Henry Is a Chilling Tale of Horror

0

Christina Henry is known for her ability to craft suspenseful and compelling narratives, and her latest release Near the Bone is no exception. An excellent horror novel about the monsters in the dark and the monsters hiding in plain sight, it will keep you up at night demanding to be read. From imagery that is beautiful and stark to the brilliant characterization of its narrator, Near the Bone will stay with readers long after they’ve finished the final chapter.

Our protagonist Mattie lives by two rules: never upset William, and don’t think of the life she knew before. Sheltered from the world and living in an isolated cabin on the side of a mountain, she relies on him for everything (and it’s soon apparent to the reader why that’s the case). But when a mysterious creature arrives with a thirst for blood and other humans begin to encroach on Mattie and William’s home in search of it, Mattie must reject the narrative she has lived with for years in order to survive.

In Mattie, Henry has crafted an interesting protagonist with a unique narrative voice. You understand her instantly, even as she makes choices and remembers horrors that the average reader will never have to contend with. But Henry takes the time to carefully sketch the supporting cast as well, with William being a particular highlight. He’s an antagonist who both feels human and otherworldly, and somehow Henry makes him much more menacing than the bloodthirsty creature in the forest. He’s cruel and terrifying, but he has just enough humanity to stop him from becoming a caricature of a villain. The complex relationship between Mattie and William anchors the novel, and when other characters do arrive you feel the intrusion the way Mattie does.

Henry’s greatest coup narratively is how she presents the monster. The characters in the novel almost never see it — we see the bloody aftermath of its actions and feel the slow dread Mattie does as she encounters it, but we almost never catch a glimpse of it. This increases the tension throughout as the reader is never quite sure what it is capable of or where it will be next. It also makes the novel cinematic, and there were moments I found myself imagining how the story would look on a screen. Too often little is left to the imagination when it comes to supernatural creatures, but Henry strikes just the right balance between showing the creature and letting us experience the story as Mattie does — scared and without knowledge of the threat she is facing.

Henry knows that the best horror narratives don’t need to include pages of backstory or lore to be effective; they just need to draw us in and invest us in the characters and their plight. By creating a protagonist with such a specific voice and surrounding her with a setting that epitomizes isolation and terror, Henry builds a story that the reader won’t want to put down (I read it in one sitting). If you are a fan of Henry’s previous novels The Ghost Tree or The Mermaid (among many others), Near the Bone will satisfy your craving for a dark fairy tale told expertly.

Near the Bone is available now wherever books are sold.
