Review: ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Season 4 is a Must-Watch

Prime Video

As a novice to the world of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina has made a fun, chaotic, albeit raunchy show for adults who love D&D or those who just love a well-written, animated series. Among critics for four seasons in a row, The Legend of Vox Machina has earned 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you aren’t aware, Critical Role is a group of friends and professional, seasoned voice actors who dive into the world of D&D. Campaign One Dungeon Master and world builder, Matthew Mercer, leads Vox Machina through the world of Exandria, where these campaigns exist; however, this specific band of misfits is primarily based on the continent of Tal’Dorei. The cast of Prime’s Vox Machina features Marisha Ray (Keyleth), Ashley Johnson (Pike), Liam O’ Brien (Vax’ildan), Sam Riegel (Scanlan), Laura Bailey (Vex’ahlia), Travis Willingham (Grog), and Taliesin Jaffe (Percy). Mercer voices a plethora of characters, including Trinket the Bear and Sylas Briarwood, to name a few.

Spoiler alert ahead: Currently in its fourth season, with a beautiful recap rendition of the series from Grog himself, we find the gang reunited after a year apart. The team is reeling from the aftermath of personal journeys and adventures like Keyleth’s completion of her Aramenté, Vex and Percy’s life at Whitestone (with a secret marriage under their belt), Pike’s struggle with faith, and Vax’s ominous, unfinished business with the Matron of Ravens. The team reunites at Keyleth’s coronation as Voice of the Tempest, but with a new threat on the horizon, they’re forced to cut the celebration short and dive deeper into the lore of “The Whispered One.” With new and old foes, the team must work together to unravel the threat and save the world. Notable in season four of Vox Machina thus far are the additions of Taryon Darrington, voiced by the vivacious Wayne Brady, and his robotic butler sidekick, Doty. Also along for the ride is Gideon, voiced by Andy Serkis, who needs no introduction. Although Scanlan’s absence is palpable so far this season, we’ll see him briefly reunite with the gang during the latter half. Season Four so far has been a wild ride, with honorable mentions of the “Ocean’s Eleven” inspired heist, haunted Whitestone, and Rock-n-Roll battle episodes among the favorites so far. The character development and storylines have us on the edge of our seats, clutching our pearls, and grabbing tissues (RIP Pop Pop).
