Essex College will be down a student next semester, as Reneé Rapp is leaving The Sex Lives of College Girls in its upcoming third season. She will appear in a handful of episodes — number currently unknown — before making her exit. Deadline was first to break the news.
Rapp plays Leighton, a wealthy legacy student trying to live up to her mother’s expectations while also working to accept herself. In Season 1, viewers learned that Leighton is a lesbian, though she was closeted for most of the season. She eventually came out to her fellow roommate Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) at the end of the season. By Season 2, Leighton was out and hooking up with pretty much every woman (and good for her), soon telling Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) and Bela (Amrit Kaur). Leighton is also quite the math whiz, even if she tries to (poorly) hide it.
Alongside making her television debut with The Sex Lives of College Girls, Rapp is a singer and released her debut EP Everything to Everyone near the end of 2022. Beginning on September 15, Rapp will be heading on tour in several cities across the United States, as well as hitting cities in France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Ireland. Additionally, Rapp will reprise her Mean Girls Broadway role as Regina George for the upcoming movie musical.
The Sex Lives of College Girls takes place at New England Essex College and follows four roommates and friends — Leighton, Bela, Kimberly, and Whitney — as they begin their college careers and take on personal, academic, and other challenges. It was created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble. Additional cast includes Mitchell Slaggert, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Renika Williams, Midori Francis, Christopher Meyer, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer, and Sierra Katow.
