‘Big Mouth’ Renewed for Final Eighth Season, Spin-Off ‘Human Resources’ Cancelled

The end of Big Mouth is almost nigh, as Netflix has renewed its animated comedy for an eighth and final season. Its spin-off series Human Resources, which premiered last year, was also cancelled by the streamer. However, it will still air its previously ordered second season as planned.

First debuting in 2017, Big Mouth follows the lives of a group of young teens as they enter puberty. Throughout the show’s current six seasons, the series followed the core group as they learned about themselves in various ways. It hits on themes ranging from love, hate, family, mental health and more, with a plethora of related creatures (e.g. Hormone Monsters, Lovebugs, etc.) guiding the group along — for better or for worse. The sixth season premiered on Netflix at the end of last year. Season 7 has yet to set a release date. The renewal news marks the series as one of the longest running Netflix originals, which is quite the feat given the streamer’s track record.

Human Resources took a different approach in the story, instead following the creatures themselves as they navigated the workplace and personal struggles. Unlike Big Mouth, it also focused more on the human adults rather than the teens, hitting on topics such as grief, first-time motherhood, and more. Season 1 tied right back into Big Mouth, largely in the carryover from show to show with Maury’s pregnancy.

Big Mouth was created by Nick Kroll, Jennifer Flackett, Mark Levin, and Andrew Goldberg. Its voice cast includes Kroll, John Mulaney, Maya Rudolph, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Ayo Edebiri, and Jessi Klein, among others. Human Resources was created by Kelly Galuska, Andrew Goldberg, Kroll, Levin, and Flackett. Kroll, Rudolph, Aidy Bryant, Randall Park, Keke Palmer, Brandon Kyle Goodman, and David Thewlis will return for season 2.

In a statement, Billy Wee, Netflix Director of Adult Animation, said: “Big Mouth is a towering achievement in animated comedy that will make Netflix history for its longevity. We are thrilled that we still have two more hilarious seasons to share with fans before this brilliant coming of age story reaches its conclusion.”

All current episodes of Big Mouth and Human Resources are available now on Netflix.
