As a part of Netflix’s 2023 film slate preview today, the streaming platform revealed the release date for Zack Snyder’s upcoming science-fiction film — Rebel Moon. The film will premiere on Netflix beginning December 22, 2023.
According to the film’s logline, the story begins as:
“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past named Kora to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand.”
The film stars Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Bae Doona, Ray Fisher, and Charlie Hunnam, with Anthony Hopkins lending his voice for a role. Additional cast members are Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Jena Malone, and Fra Fee.
The film was originally developed by Snyder as a potential Star Wars feature over a decade ago — before Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. Snyder penned the script with 300′s Kurt Johnstad and Army of the Dead scribe Shay Hatten.
In a statement Snyder made to The Hollywood Reporter when the film was announced, he explains his desire to create the film still.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Stay tuned for updates.
