Amazon Studio’s Red, White & Royal Blue movie has added another star to its already royally impressive cast!
Uma Thurman, famous for a myriad of roles from Pulp Fiction to Kill Bill, is the latest name to join the rom-com, based on the New York Times bestselling queer romance novel by Casey McQuiston. Thurman will be playing the role of Ellen Claremont, the mother of protagonist Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez, The Kissing Booth) and, importantly, President of the United States.
Thurman will appear alongside the previously announced Perez, as well as Nicholas Galitzine, Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, Aneesh Sheth, Polo Morin, Ahmed Elhaj, and Akshay Khanna.
Red, White & Royal Blue follows Alex as, following his mother’s election as President, he becomes America’s first Mexican-American First Son of the United States. Along with his sister June and friend Nora, Alex quickly becomes the focus of the country’s media, who immediately portray him as the American equivalent of a young royal. Unfortunately, Alex has a longstanding feud with an actual royal — his transatlantic counterpart, Prince Henry of England (Galitzine). When a tabloid newspaper publishes a photo of Alex and Henry in a messy altercation at a royal wedding, US/UK relations go swiftly downhill.
Cornered by press staff, handlers, and Heads of State, Alex and Henry are forced into damage control: not only a truce, but a public fake-friendship that involves them playing nice on social media and enduring each other’s company at parties. What begins as a resolution to one international incident may soon cause another, though. As Alex gets to know the real Henry and finds himself falling head over heels, their secret romance could cause a scandal that reaches far beyond them.
Red, White & Royal Blue stormed the bestseller lists in 2019. The movie was announced in 2021, and a director was soon attached — Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew López.
Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will produce for Berlanti/Schechter Films, with López, McQuiston, and Michael McGrath serving as executive producers.
The movie is heading into production this month in the UK, and it will ultimately premiere on Prime Video. At the moment, no release date has been confirmed, and it’s not officially known what roles the rest of the amazing cast will be playing.
