Still Working 9 to 5, the feature documentary starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman, will have its world premiere at SXSW! Still Working 9 to 5 will explore why workplace inequality is no laughing matter in the 40 years since the comedy, 9 to 5, was released.

The 1980 film is an enduring part of American history cinema, a beloved comedy that addresses serious subject matter. Generations of women know every lyric to the iconic theme song that became an anthem for working women since its original release. An anthem for women who seek fairness, equality, and dignity from their male counterparts. After more than 40 years, the feature documentary Still Working 9 to 5 celebrates the iconic film, while chronicling the impact it had on the women’s movement of the time and how it echoes through to today’s struggles for women.

Still Working 9 to 5 reunites stars Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman from the original 9 to 5, as well as Rita Moreno from the 9 to 5 TV series, Allison Janney from the Broadway musical, and other stars from the television and stage versions of the classic film. The documentary also features activists and individuals closely associated with the women’s movement both now and then.

Still Working 9 to 5 explores the comedic tone of the film and the way it resonated with a wide audience at a time when the feminist message was rejected and feared by much of the population. It also examines how the success of the film spawned various 9 to 5 spin-offs including a TV series (1980s) and musicals (2009, 2019), discusses the same issues addressed in the film, and questions whether the message retains its original poignancy, while also examining what has and has not changed for women in the workplace over the last 40 years.

Sure to be a hit, the film also includes a musical surprise. In addition to the world premiere of Still Working 9 to 5, there will also be a very special musical surprise for audiences. A new duet of the “9 to 5” theme song will debut, produced by Shane McAnally and performed by Dolly Parton and Kelly Clarkson.

The creative team behind the project includes Creative Team director/producers Camille Hardman (HGTV’s Restored, Big Dreamers) and Gary Lane (Hollywood to Dollywood), executive producers Larry Lane (Hollywood to Dollywood) Steve Summers (Netflix’s Heartstrings), Shane McAnally (Songland and multi Grammy winner), Regina K Scully (Phoenix Rising), Geralyn Dreyfous (Allen v Farrow), and editors Oreet Rees (Playground) and Elisa Bonora (Glen Campbell: Here I Am, David Crosby: Remember My Name).
