‘The Tomorrow War’ Review: An Action-Packed, Heartfelt Summer Blockbuster

Helmed by Chris Pratt, The Tomorrow War is an action-packed, heartfelt summer blockbuster that sci-fi fans will love. The film was released on Amazon Prime on July 2 and boasts an impressive and fun cast, with Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, and Betty Gilpin alongside Pratt.

Warning: Some mild spoilers about the film below!

The film is about travelers from 30 years in the future, coming back in time to ask the people in 2022 to help them fight a war that they are losing. With this, a draft is enacted to send people into the future to help them fight a war against aliens.

The film is all you’d anticipate from a sci-fi film and more; it has some incredible CGI for the alien species, oftentimes completely terrifying. The effects are truly remarkable and are seamlessly woven into big action sequences. The action scenes are full of punches (figuratively and literally), and the story by Zach Dean is one of originality that will keep your heart racing in anticipation of what happens next. Chris McKay directed it, and the film has interesting shots that add to the excitement and suspenseful nature of the film.

Pratt is solidifying himself as a solid action star, adding another impressive film to his list, one that he also executive produces. Strahovski adds a heartfelt element and gives a truly great emotional performance. Richardson is a clear standout as Charlie, giving the film comic relief but also really making you root for him. Hodge is the tough Dorian, who peels back the layers of his character throughout the film, and helps you understand him more.

Overall, the film is a great sci-fi that reminds me of such classics as The Terminator and Predator. It’s fun, heartfelt, and yes, suspenseful, and it ties together nicely to bring an action film that people will love for years to come.

The Tomorrow War is available to watch now on Amazon Prime.
