Tessa Thompson is known for many roles, some of the most recent including Sylvie’s Love, Men in Black: International, Thor: Ragnarok, and Avengers: Endgame. According to Deadline, the star is moving in a new direction in her career by starting her own production company, Viva Maude, securing a first-look deal at HBO Max as well as HBO, and executive producing Who Fears Death and The Secret Lives of Church Ladies — both book adaptations.

Who Fears Death is set in post-apocalyptic Africa and follows Onyesowu, who goes on a journey of changing her self-hatred into love but must confront her demons in the form of her sorcerer father, serving as the deliverer of the oppressed, and mastering new and terrifying powers.

The Secret Lives of Curch Ladies is a short story collection that contains nine different stories exploring the themes of Black women, sexuality, and church. Caught between the ideals of the church and what they want to be, the women in the stories struggle to figure out who they want to be in the world.
