Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death Issue #3 is now available!

From Gerard Way and Shaun Simon (The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys). You Look Like Death Issue #3 features art by I.N.J. Culbard, lettering from Nate Piekos, and a cover by The Umbrella Academy‘s Gabriel Bá, along with two variant covers from I.N.J. Culbard and David Mack.

Klaus’s contact with the dead comes in handy when his former movie star friend needs help wowing a casting director. Beneath Hollywood, we catch up with Shivers, the vampire-chimp drug lord, in his vampire amusement park, where he continues his search for the Umbrella Brat who stole his stash, while Klaus’s aging paramour distracts him with booze … and relish.

So far, we’ve seen Klaus kicked out of the Umbrella Academy mansion by dear old dad, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, which resulted in an entanglement with the chilling vampire-chimp drug lord, Mr. Shivers. With no where else to go, The Séance finds his way to the one place he knows will accept him — Hollywood. And accept him they do. He takes refuge with a washed up actress named Vivian Clarke, and she’s ready to use Number 4 and his medium powers to get her back into the spotlight. Mr. Shivers is still on the hunt for the Hargreeves sibling who stole his drugs, and in the process has acquired a new business opportunity in LA, all while Klaus is getting a taste for some mind-altering substances with Vivian.

There are spoilers for Issue #3 of You Look Like Death beyond this point!

Klaus and Vivian are still a force to be reckoned with, with Klaus assisting Vivian in getting herself back into the limelight. Using his power, he channels the greats of the past to aid Vivian through her auditions, and it would seem her plan is working flawlessly as she impresses them all. However, nothing this good can ever last — trouble is brewing for The Séance. At Mr. Shivers’ newest underground carnival, someone brings the revenge-fueled vampire-chimp drug lord a lead on Klaus’ whereabouts, bringing a character from previous issues back full circle as the informant. Meanwhile, a new group has turned their radar onto Klaus as they find a valuable object resurrected by Number 4 — a top hat of the late great Dante Chablis.

The soul-searching in the void continues with Lyle and Klaus as Lyle awaits his hearing on his fate — heaven or hell? If this issue brought us one thing in particular, it was more questions about exactly who Vivian Clarke is, and what is she capable of? Klaus uncovers a photo of a young Vivian with a child — a photo Vivian never wanted to see the light of day again — and when Shivers’ men come to take Klaus to their boss, it would seem something sinister lurks beneath her frail frame. She takes out the two Shivers recruits with some help from an emerging arachnid-like power. Is this a product of Klaus’ doing, or a secret she’s been hiding all along? The character of Vivian gained an exceptional amount of depth and mystery in this issue than the two previous, moving from a leech on Klaus’ abilities to a new realm of devious potential.

However, the removal of Shivers’ men wasn’t enough to keep Klaus safe, as the issue ends with our new Dante Chablis obsessed group finding an unsuspecting and very disoriented Klaus at Vivian’s mansion.

Issue #3 of Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death was another great addition to this stunning series. This issue called back many characters from previous issues that seemingly appeared as short players, but have joined us for the long run now. The meticulous story-telling and attention to detail is incredible as we’re taken on this journey through The Séance’s younger years, and it gives us much to look forward to if the other members of the Umbrella Academy are to follow.

Tales From the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death can be found through Dark Horse Comics digitally or in print and at your local comic shops! Issue #4 will be available on December 23 and Issue #5 January 20, 2021. The entire first volume with all six issues will also be available on March 17, 2021 and is currently available for pre-order.
