News spread today that Sense 8 will now be coming back for a two-hour special, which should be released next year. Netflix cancelled the show at the beginning of this month. Fans protested about the show’s cancellation, and now, Netflix has listened and will air a special next year.
Earlier this year, Timeless, a show that premiered on NBC last October, was not renewed by NBC at the Upfronts. Fans were devistated at the news, and we wrote about how much we thought that was a mistake. We were disappointed, and so were many of the other fans, cast and crew. Well, after hearing the fans reactions, as well as the fight from the creators and actors, NBC decided to bring the show back. Timeless will be back in 2018, for a total of 10 episodes. They changed their decision in three days. Three days. The cast and crew all say it was everything to do with the fans of Timeless, and how much they reached out to NBC and protested about the show being cancelled.
Another great example of fandom is the Supernatural one. We’ve written many times about this show, as well as why we think it’s the most powerful fandom in television.
They’ve just announced that a spinoff will be coming, titled “Wayward Sisters”, starring Kim Rhodes (and hopefully Briana Buckmaster. No official news on Briana yet, but her Twitter responses make this seem likely, as well as a post from her Talent Agency.)
There’s a “Wayward” movement, which is also known as “Wayward AF”, started by Wayward Daughters and the women who founded it, Betty and Riley. Wayward Daughters partnered with Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster, who have been completely supportive and also created a campaign called “Wayward AF”, which has now expanded into a movement. They just launched another campaign, “Wayward Strong.” Fans have been pushing for the women of Supernatural to get their own show, and guess what? They listened.
It’s really incredible the power fandoms have and how they use it for good, as well as expressing what they want to see. It’s even better now that networks are finally starting to pay attention.
